I think my problem with this book, as with the rest of the series, was that it lacked focus. I think that the author was trying to pull off a complex, intricately woven story where everything was connected to everything else, but all that everything got away from her early on and never quite managed to get pulled back in to make a workable pattern.

Plot threads were created and then abandoned in favour of other ones without being tied off first, characters acted in irrationally stupid ways in order to fulfill those new plot threads , and the ending was a complete deus ex machina

I give this 2 stars because though it was confusing, made very little sense and I thought it had some of the most stilted dialogue I've read for a long time, it did at least give me some answers (no matter how disappointing or anti-climatic I found them to be). Also if I gave "Beta" a 2 star rating when I actively disliked much of the content then I can't very well give this a lower rating simply because it was muddled and a bit tiresome.

I would like to give the entire series a serious "avoid at all costs" label, but that's my personal opinion and lots of other people seem to like it just fine, so maybe it's just me that has problems following and appreciating everything. Each to their own I guess.

TL;DR: Over 4 books a lot of poorly explained events happen just so things can basically stay the same. I'm left wondering what the entire point of it really was.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the last book in the War of the Alphas book. At this point, everything you think you know about these characters from the first book has drastically changed. Stark's motivation is not pure, Rylie is not evil, and "God" might just be listening.

Deirdre has been taking drugs, acting like a criminal, and trying to win the vote for Stark. From an underdog to a bully, she is pretty much completely unlikable for me at this point. I found myself rooting for someone to either put her out of her misery or shake her out of whatever dark spiral she's caught in. Somewhere along the way she winds up trying to hunt down the missing Stark and her entire campaign platform gets blown to pieces. There's rigged elections to fix, Stark's children to rescue, and a world of shifters that are depending on her. It really is no wonder that Deirdre breaks in the most spectacular way she can.

It was a little hard to read this one because it was so very dark. Kind of like watching an abusive wife stick with her husband, it almost physically hurt to watch Deirdre continue to support Stark. I wanted so much for her to be a tough female character but she comes off as very, very weak in the end. We get a lot of resolution (as I've come to expect from this author), but I never quite forgave Deirdre for her mistakes (especially in the end). This world is a lot darker than those previous, but not any less intricate. The world building was what kept me going. Oh, and it never hurts to have some familiar faces in there.

When I first started War of the Alphas, I had high hopes for Deirdre and Stark. The final volume of a series can make or break it, and no matter how much I enjoy the first or second in a series, if the concluding volume doesn't live up to the beginning, I find it affects my view on the whole thing.

This was definitely the case with War of the Alphas. Compared to the first and second volumes of the series, Pas simply couldn't live up to the rest of it.

Deirdre isn't he type of character I can get behind. She continues the cycle of abuse, she doesn't really grow, and she, at the end, doesn't really make that much of a positive change for herself or for others. She's just not a woman I can get behind. She had so many chances and opportunities, and for whatever reason, she decided to stay in an abusive situation when she had the choice to easily get out of it. She just didn't grow as a woman, and she just didn't have the strength of character I was hoping she'd develop from the potentials of book one.

The other characters likewise had similar issues. I felt the conclusion of this book was less about Deirdre and Stark and more about making the main character from other parts of the world seem better, that those characters had the redeeming qualities and using Deirdre and Stark to confirm this.

The ending, most of all, left me soured. Had the book ended a little later with redemption or the substantial hope of it in the wings, I probably would have enjoyed it better, but at the end... nothing changed, and that disappointed me most of all.

Great series but not the same without Everton Stark! The plot (s) didn't quit add up and where a little of a mess. You get thrown from left to right. Try to follow up the author but know you are not really up to speed.

I missed a strong story-line and I really missed Everton Stark, this character has given de last three books an edge that made the books fun to read and that was simply not in this book (Pas) anymore.

Despite unlikable characters and unlikeable plot moments/actions, I found this series compelling with original takes on lore and just had to read all 4 books!! I realize now that I’ve entered this world at a late point in the timeline, so wil not start from the beginning.

Reine is just so awesome at creating characters that are just chock full of interesting bits
10/13

I've had this book for a long time and just now finished it today. I'm not sure exactly why I didn't inhale it like I had with other S.M. Reine books. I think I had a hard time relating or understanding Deidre at times. That and I wasn't all that thrilled with some of the future characters from previous books. The twists in this book concerning Deidre, Everton, and Rhiannon were just ... wow. With the ending of this book I am really curious to see what happens next with all three since they weren't killed right-off.
I will say on a un-related note ... omg Ophelia and Cooper!
I also had a stronger urge to smack Fritz in this series. One of the great things that Reine does is to create multi-faceted characters. One minute you hate their guts and the next you are totally sympathetic to their plight. Whoever the good guys or bad guys are can be wonderfully ambiguous at times. They are great at conforming to their roles in whatever spot they are used in. I fail @ explaining it right....
One of the things I like about all of the different series is that they can be read separately and that they take place at different times in the same world. Most of the first books in her different series are free, or the first three are @ a special price, so that you can easily start a series to see if you like the flavor of the books. I would highly recommend reading everything she has written though ... I'm still working on that myself.

Pas : An Urban Fantasy Novel - Book 4

Well this was a disappointing end, to a sad story from the very beginning.

I haven't read that many books that I have completely delete from my collection, but the 4 of this series are getting dumped.

Deirdre Toombs even in the end is a sad, weak and pathetic woman. I had hoped she would rid herself of the murderous, drug user, terrorist and despicable shifter Everton Stark, but no!

He beat the crap out of her, forced drugs on her, treated her like crap and rather then walk away from this sickening shifter - no.

She was given a new chance to make a difference and in the end through, her warped and perverted feelings for Stark, took it away.

Sorry I much prefer strong women who have the guts to get away from men or shifters who are violent, deadly, uncaring, think and act like only they have the right path for everyone's future, no matter how evil or destructive those ideas are.

A dark urban fantasy that's book 4 in the War of the Alphas series. This series is interlinked with most of her series, which lets the reader see a different perspective or explains what happened after other stories. I love S. M. Reine's work and her extensive world-building, but at times the characters' action were unbelievable in this series. Or maybe it was the MC's indecisive behavior. Or that one of my favorite characters in the series doesn't make it. Oh well, you can't win them all. I can say that this book closes out this storyline well and the reader does get closure. There are some pretty cool shifters and fae in these books. I love that a dragon, a phoenix, and some naiads are included. I look forward to the author's next work.

Pas is book 4 in the War of the Alphas series by SM Reine. This series is a continuation of Reine’s long running series which focuses on what happens after Genesis. This is the final book in this set of the series. The next continuation of the series will be the Mage Craft series which will premiere at the end of June 2016!

Everton Stark is missing! He went into the Winter Court for revenge and no one has seen him since. Deirdre still feels strongly that Stark should be the next Alpha and should participate in the election. So she does what any good Beta would do. She continues on like Stark is just busy and she is following his orders. The problem with that? Eventually, the allies are going to want Stark not Deirdre.

In this epic finale of the War of the Alphas Deirdre found the answers to so many of her questions and I can’t wait to see what she will do in the future of this continued world of Reine’s.

Better than the last couple of books in the series, but still an absolute mess. I'm glad to see that Deirdre had a bit of character development in this one, but that ending? Really? After everything that happened, I can't believe she would still I know she's all about second chances now, but that seems like an absolutely terrible decision.

What a gross, pathetic ending. When I realised this series featured villains that were protagonists from previous series, I was excited. That's so unique and special! But the author has such a hard-on for her old characters she just *couldn't* let them take responsibility for their actions. No spoilers, but I have never seen an author suck their own dick so hard. It isn't satisfying in the least. It defies basically every rule of writing. DO NOT READ THIS!! It retroactively ruins the other three books. Make up your own ending. Trust me, it's better than this trash.

Godslayer

this whole series is excellent.I liked how Stark is dedicated to himself no matter what. How Rylie wants to do right but can't because of her selfishness. How Marion is a child but so smart. But I especially like Deidre who is the center of the whole series. How without her the plot falls apart. She is what a hero is suppose to be, selfless, smart, hard working, puts others first, and can be only an Omega!!! This series is a MUST READ!!!!

Good series

I enjoyed the series. Didn’t like Stark from the start. What’s with the beating of women , if he wasn’t doing that he was getting her high. I liked Gage. She didn’t get her happily ever after.

S.M. Reine is an expert at creating terribly flawed characters who blur the lines between good and evil in unimaginable ways. From the beginning of this series, I had a hard time sympathizing with Deirdre. Mostly because of her feelings toward Rylie. I’ve said it more than once since I started reviewing this series. PAS didn’t change that, but I started looking at these characters from a different perspective when I started thinking about this review.

I’ve had three series full of books to fall in love with and respect Rylie as a character. Seeing her from Deirdre’s perspective was hard, but it was necessary. I wanted to tell her everything that Rylie had been through. Basically, I wanted to speed up the process, but I couldn’t. Those were things that Dierdre had to learn on her own. Besides, Rylie’s patience and honestly with Dierdre only succeeded in making me love and respect her more.

One of my favorite parts of this series has been the sometimes unexpected appearances of and/or references to past characters. Of course Dierdre’s clueless, but to those of us who have read the previous books, it’s almost comforting to see where they ended up or how they’re immortalized after Genesis.

To say that PAS was intense would be an understatement. Dierdre held the fate of a lot of people in the decisions she made, but her fate was held by others’ actions as well. My opinion about some characters changed, which is a normal occurrence with this author. My opinion on some didn’t change enough to make a difference though, but I have a feeling that SM Reine isn’t quite done with them yet, so I won’t write them off totally. There were plenty of twists, turns, revelations and surprises to keep the pages turning, which I’ve also come to expect. Take nothing for granted and never assume.

I’d like to say that this book brought everything to a satisfying close, but I can’t. A story arc came full circle, but the story is far from over. That’s okay though, because when it comes to this world of demons, angels, shifters, wolves, vampires and even humans that this author has created, I don’t think I’ll ever get enough. ;)

I received PAS in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I loved the series so sad that its over I would have loved to see what would happen with Deidre and Stark in the future even individually. I would have liked to know more about Vidya and the Stark girls like they seemed to be his main focus throughout the series but nothing with them made sense. the reasons to get them away from crazy Rhiannon made sense but I didn't quite understand why they needed to be kept from Stark too. Yeah obviously he was crazy but it seemed that he would have taken care of them if given the chance. Then again i suppose the end might have explained why that was a bad idea. The most surprising thing for me in this book was not hating Rylie. When you mostly have Deidre's point of view its hard not to hate her though she did manage to come through in the end. One thing though that bothered me was Deidre's inability to see what her real trigger was for using her phoenix abilities it seemed so obvious to me the whole time. Overall i liked this book though it is was a bit different from the others that could be because Deidre spent so much of the time trying to be in charge. I always feel bad that no matter how hard she tries everything still ends up a mess for her. By the end though I think she's grown up enough to finally do some good. In general I hate when things end and there were a lot of unanswered questioned but at the same time it didn't end badly so i cant complain too much. I still love Deidre and I think she was good for Stark in their weird twisted way. Still i wish there was more!

Disclaimer: I was given this 4-in-1 series book free for honest review.

So here goes! This is the only one in this series I haven't read before, yet it seamlessly followed the others. At least I knew when this one began as suddenly new stuff was happening that I didn't recognize.

Diedre Tombs is a mixed up, abused person with addictions and is trying to get it together now that she is attempting growing up and gaining responsibilities. She is hard to love as a character, but when has Sara Reine written characters that are Suzy Sunshines? Yet the abuse she endures and the addictions she continues are hard to read about. And her misguided thoughts about our old friend Rylie hurt.

Then Rylie shows the stuff she'd made of and all is well.

This is a great finisher book. All the threads are nicely tied up and you feel their universe will go on without you.

One of the problems I have with this book, and it may be that it was explained and I missed it with my text-to-speech reading, why is this called PAS? It makes no sense.

I'm glad to see that Ms. Reine has more for us from this LONG bunch of series. Another point of view will be written about soon. Yay!

By the way, because of the adult content this is better to be read by new adults and older. Maybe mature teens will get some of the issues involved here but even this old lady finds it hard to look at some of these issues. Still, it is well worth the read.

Good GRAVY, S.M. Reine knows how to end a series with a bang. And some of the things revealed were mind-blowing. Like, I'm still trying to wrap my brain around them. *stares at everybody with creepy concentration and tries to keep it together*

GUYS, I didn't even hate Stark by the end. And I don't know what to think about that. I mean, the guy's a jerk and a total butt-nugget most of the time and I DIDN'T HATE HIM BY THE END. That's some impressive writing, because there was a time I thought he was irredeemable. And the stuff that went down in winter?!?! *crazy eyes* Heck, I ended up liking a DRAGON who did some pretty reprehensible things (or so it seemed at the time) and I'M SO CONFUSED ABOUT WHAT THIS SAYS ABOUT ME NOW.

*deep breath* So. This book is good. It gave me some things to think about and it tied off the overall series arc with some serious awesomeness. If you've read the previous books, you're going to want to read this one. If you haven't read the previous books, go back and start from the beginning. I mean the beginning-beginning. Start with Elise and James and work your way up to Rylie and then dive into Deirdre's world. Because seeing it all from the beginning makes it hurt so much more.

I’m a big fan of Ms Reine’s books. I enjoy her style of writing, and the world she has created. And even though this series has been somewhat darker, more intense, I have still found it enjoyable.

But. I confess that this book left me a little confused. Now, that could be because of the pace; this one moves at a fair old clip. It could be because of the revelations in this book; about Stark, about his children; about the political machinations. Whatever the reason, for a good proportion of this story, I felt off balance, turned about. And given the level of plotting, double crossing and scheming in this book, I wonder if this is precisely what the author intended.

Nevertheless, for me at least, this book hit its stride in the last third, with an ending that was simultaneously teasing, yet satisfactory.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Wow...just...amazing!!

I did not see all the twist coming. I was very happy... with some of them I was upset by a few. But... It made for a great story. I was a little bummed at how it ended. For the end of the series she left so much room for more. With that being said though... there may be other series that follows it like with the Elise books. ;) fingers crossed for that one. Lol

I'm sure I get upset when her books end be cause she is a GREAT author. My favorite one matter of fact. I have purchased every single book she has and get all giddy like a school girl when there is a new one coming out. IF you have not read her work, do yourself a favour and...read them!!!! Start with seasons of the moon...or if you want the descent series. You will LOVE the lot of them!

Not sure how to rate this, frankly I didn't like the story.
The characters pushed all the wrong buttons for me and the story tried to be a bit of everything, Urban Fantasy, Chick-Lit, Political/Social Drama, and succeeded at none.
A completely unmotivated sex scene at the climax of the story (pun intended) followed-up by obnoxious "dirty talk" didn't help my enjoyment of the story any.

Also there's a huge logic gap at the (overly sappy) end of it:

*** Spoiler ***

When Deirde dies, again, she meets her father in the Afterlife who died when Genesis hit.
That contradicts everything we are told about why Elise couldn't resurrect those that died before the Gensis event - i.e. that shortly after death the "soul" is getting pooled and reused.

*** Spoiler ***

With one exception, I've loved every series that SM Reine has written. One series (The Descent Series) is one of my favorite set of books OF ALL TIME. Which basically means I'll read anything she writes. The Omega series, with Deirdre Tombs at its center, is a strong urban fantasy series. It's anti-hero is easy to hate and hard to like, and the books never pretend otherwise. This book is the finale, and [STOP READING SPOILERS] I'm delighted to see that he's not redeemed as some sort of romantic hero. That would have been bullshit. He's not a hero. He's a horrible person who beat her up the first few books and made her kill her friend. The only redemption comes for Deirdre, and it's grand. She's a Phoenix after all. Love.
