Of Blood and Spirit #2

Darkness Entwined

Rate this book
As the powers of darkness and light collide, a soul with no redemption must rely on love to restore the balance.

Keenan was a mistake. An abomination feared by the very being who had sired him for the potent powers of light and dark in his soul. He was tortured for years until he managed to escape the God of Destruction, his father, Roh Se Kahn, only to be imprisoned again and held captive in a war he had no ties to.

King of the Vam’kir, an ancient race who survives on the life-giving blood of humans, Rowan is struggling to enforce the peace treaty signed by his kind and their twin race, the shapeshifting Ba’Kal. After two millennia, their war has finally come to an end, though their alliance is tentative.

Trapped in a loveless marriage, Rowan yearns for happiness he fears may never come. On an expedition to rescue the last of the prisoners held over from the war, he finds Keenan, the mate he’d been searching for his entire life. But their path is lined with impossible obstacles.

Rowan’s people would never accept the bastard son of the dark God at his side, and the threat of Roh Se Kahn brings a new war into their midst.

Will their love for each other be enough to conquer the hatred of Rowan’s people and destroy the dark forces of the God of Destruction?

Reader Advisory: This books contains scenes of violence and references to rape.

I have always been a lover of books, particularly those with the dichotomy of the strong alpha male and the weaker love of their life which they must rescue. After reading all I could find in M/F books, I decided to give M/M fiction a try and my addiction skyrocketed.

Hot, sexy men times two? No contest. Unfortunately, I was reading faster than the authors could produce. Eventually, I resorted to imagining my own stories and my mind took off from there.

I have to admit, though, I am a bit of a recluse. If not for the joy and humour my husband and four boys bring to me, I would never have ventured this far.

Keenan, abomination and feared by the one who sired him. Rowan, King of the Vam’kir yearns for happiness that he fears will never come. They hope their love will be enough to conquer and destroy the dark forces in this thrilling paranormal romance. In case you are wondering this fascinating and complex world takes place in the present and ranges across the continents which adds lots of atmosphere to the story and makes it even more compelling as you become absorbed in the intricate and exciting world full of intriguing characters and interesting elements and I can’t wait to read the next one. By the way I do recommend that this series be read in order to get the full impact of the overall situation.

A great, long awaited sequel to Crimson Mate!

I originally read 'Crimson Mate', the first book in this series in 2012. The sequel was a long time in coming and I even thought Nikki had stopped writing since she hadn't had any new releases in quite a long time. Then last year I noticed that she had re-released Crimson Mate and was absolutely thrilled that a sequel would be coming soon.

I must confess that I stayed up all night reading this book, I just couldn't put it down. Nikki always has at least one traumatized, abused but strong character in her stories, Keenan was this character. But even with all that he endured throughout his life he still managed to trust enough in Rowan to find love with him. Rowan was great as well and I just loved the interactions between these two men.

I think this series is proving to be one of my new favorites. I love the world building that is happening as well as meeting all the new characters. You also get to reconnect with characters from the previous books. I will admit that you might want to have a few tissues handy ....MILD SPOILER ALERT.......since one of these new characters doesn't survive the battle. I was really sad that this happened, and while I know it would be considered unrealistic for someone not to die in battle, this is a romance and I want my unrealistic but happy ending for everyone. LOL!.....END OF SPOILER

Even though I highly recommend reading Crimson Mate first I don't think it's required since sNikki does a great job of filling in any background relevant to the storyline in this one. Now I'm just hoping that I don't have to wait another 3 years for Dhani and Tailor's story. I really want to see how Nikki manages to get around the huge complication in their relationship.

So pick up this book and read it, I don't think you would be disappointed!

Unwanted and unpredictable but a useful tool for some, Keenan survives by hiding his powers until he is rescued by Rowan, King of the Vam’kir.

Darkness Entwined is the second book in the Of Blood and Spirit series. The plot’s theme is interracial wars. For centuries, there were two separate pure races. Vampires and shifters are both spiritual children of the light. The vampires considered themselves superior to the shifters. However, Rowan is a blend of both vampire and shifter, which is a source of contention for the vampire counsel. Keenan is a mix of dark as well as light; he is not approved of by anyone. A proposal to form a treaty between the vampires and shifters meets with opposition from both sides. Nevertheless, the vampires and shifters must join forces to eradicate Roh Se Kahn, who is bent on destroying all creatures of the light.

Darkness Entwined is set in the current world with modern day weapons. The paranormal characters live amongst the humans, who are unaware of their existence. The difference between the species is the life spans and the ability of the paranormal’s speedy healing. Also magic plays an important part in the life of the paranormals.

Nikki McCoy has created an exciting, emotional as well as very enjoyable saga. In the beginning Rowan and Keenan seem to be unlikely mates but as the story evolved, the reader can see how much of an asset each man is to the other. Together Rowan and Keenan form an unstoppable bond. Although Keenan has finally gained some respect, it is bittersweet because of the loss of his trusted friend. I look forward to the next book for answers regarding several unsolved dilemmas featured.

Curse you cliffhanger! But looks like we could be going to hell for the next book, so woo-hoo!

I loved seeing Manning and Quinn and all the others from book 1 again and how they helped Rowan and Keenan in their epic battle against evil. We had the God of Destruction, his bastard demi-god sons, numerous assorted minions and several asshole traitors in the mix, so there was no shortage of enemies to fight. It was clear that Keenan's past was extremely painful and sad, and not one he would overcome easily, but with the love of his mate and the loyalty and kindness of friends like Dhani and Hael, he was able to find an inner strength he never knew he had. And I think they're all going to need it again in order to resolve the cliffie with Dhani and Tailor. I for one can't wait.

Can I just say though that I think their revered Mother, the Goddess of Love and Light, really owes them one after everything they suffered with the God of Destruction. And I think she should pay up with a do-over on Hael. I've still got a little something in my eye over that one.

I really liked this book a lot! It had the perfect amount of Alpha protectiveness that I love in a shifter romance and the perfect amount of angst. Once I started this book I could not put it down, so I ended up staying up all night reading this. Rowan he was so protective of Keenan, that is one of the reasons I love shifter romance books. Keenan so sweet he would do anything to protect Rowan. The story moved at this perfect pace and kept me drawn in through the whole book. I won't go into much more detail because I hate to give away any spoilers. I will leave this review with I would definitely recommend this book and I can not wait for the next one in this series!
