Welcome to Rosenberg the town that promises safety and freedom from the infected.
There's just one catch, the town isn't all it’s cracked up to be.
River is quick to find that out but she tries to fit in and adjust to this new life. It is safe after all.
Making a life with Jessie doesn't seem so bad.
They have an apartment together and Jessie has a decent job that he does to make enough money to see them through. It would have helped if Davy and Kyra wouldn't have left them to fend for themselves of course.
But they can't do anything about that.
Trying to fit in River allows Jessie to talk her into going to one of the fights that the town held as entertainment.
What she finds there horrifies her.
The fights are held in a cage with human fighters pitted against the infected.
As she watches the horror of the fights play out in front of her one person tosses her world into a tailspin. In the cage before her fighting for his life is Zach.
There he was. The man that she had fallen for stuck in a cage like some sort of animal.
Unable to save him she searches for the one person who would understand her need to save him.
She had to find Gale.
Gale meanwhile was locked up himself in a room within Rosenberg's hospital. He was being treated as a human pincushion since he was immune to the virus that caused the infected.
When River rushes into his room in the hospital he expects her to hate him for keeping his secrets.
Instead she hugs him tightly as she falls apart.
She didn't hate him but she needed help that he couldn't give her.
Thankfully they had both made a friend in Rosenberg, Doctor Laken.
Jack agrees to help but when Zach gets bitten everything changes.
Jessie gets jealous and when Zach works his way between River and him Jessie shows his real colors. He shows the one side that Gale had warned them about.
The town that held so many promised begins to crumble from under their feet as the council tests them all at every angle they can manage.

River finally thinks she safe in the town with Jessie, but that was far from the truth. He brings her to a fight and she finds Zach. All hell breaks loose. She finds Gale and befriends Jack, the doctor. They literally have to fight for their lives when Jessie shows his true colors and River kills him. Gale and Shaylee escape and find a hidden basement under Rivers old house. They find Brett, Shaylees brother. They finally get Zach when he escapes and they gather enough forces to try and free the others. In the end River loses Matt and she is again on her own. I'm excited to see how this plays out.

I really liked this book. It continued right after from the first. River is in for a big surprise and she finds more strength than she ever thought she had before. I loved her connection to Matt and Zach and I relished the discovery she had with Jessie and Davy. While she is young, she lives in a world that is full of treachery and danger and she seems to have lost her ability to read people and see them for who they really are. The author wrote an impressive set of books when she created this series. The world is believable. The horror seems real. The relationships are strangely understandable. I really enjoyed reading about River and I cheer her on towards a life that is worth living.

River has gotten in with three other people, two men and one woman. They rescued her from Chris after he stole her from Zach. Now they;re on their way to a town called Rosenberg. River tries to make a life with Jessie in the town. On a night out she discovers that Zach is there and fighting in a cage with the infected. Then she discovers Gale is there also but in the hospital where he;s being examined to discover how he could be immune to the virus. How does anyone escape Rosenberg and if so where do they go that could be safe. It;s one adventure after another as Zach, Matt, Knox, Gale and River try to find their way back to each other.
Another fantastic story and followup to Alone.

This is the second book in the series. The action happens quickly. There is lot of angst and danger in this book. Having to choose between 2 loves amid all the dangers of the new world full of infected is a hard thing to do. The men are a lot more understanding in this book than men actually are in real life, but it is a fantasy story. I enjoyed the story. It is well written and easy to read.

I did enjoy this second part to the series. I do like the selection of main characters, as well as the ideas & the energy of the story. It is less focused on the zombies & more on the evil people that seem to always survive in these end of the world situations. I found a few parts of the book a little frustrating as I thought the reactions of the characters not completely in keeping with the previous book, but hey, over all a good fun read!
