ARCHIE’S HERE… AGAIN AND READY FOR THE NEW MILLENIUM
I wish everybody would stop looking for a villain in this.
Welcome back to Riverdale. This is the NEW Riverdale!
Archie’s back for a new generation, remaining true to its original essence.
The secret of updating a classic (in my humble opinion) is to understand what really needs to be updated and leaving the rest as it was originally created. It’s not that hard to grasp, but many creative teams don’t do that. Luckily, the winning team of Waid and Staples developed a brilliant re-introduction of this classic comic book to the audiences of the new millenium. Even the story isn’t only “told” with the Waid’s words but also through the Staples’ images. Awesome first issue.
Archie's here, Betty's here, Veronica too (but in the issue #2, I guess), Reggie's here…
…and yep, Jughead too!
And maybe you won’t believe me, but the best reimagined character is…
…Jughead!
Jughead Jones is the silent hero, the smart one in the shadows, fooling everybody’s around him but the audience can see his big heart and his pinpoint wisdom.
But don’t get me wrong, Archie Andrews is still the main character, the one who everybody is looking for, the one who everybody is talking about. Here, the “All New” Archie can be easily compared with Marty McFly (just without a Time Machine and a mad scientist). Cool guy, nice buddy and…
…plays the guitar in the school dance! Archie rocks… literally!
Betty Cooper is still your all-american next-door girl, just adjusting to the concept of the new millenium. She knows Archie since they were in the kindergarden, and they were the Riverdale High’s Hottest Couple, until…
…The Lipstick Incident!!! (don’t ask me, I don’t have the details neither, but trust me, it was bad!)
Reggie Mantle, from the few that you can get in the first issue, he looks like a Fonzie/Danny Zuko of the Mirror Universe, and you can bet that he doesn’t like Archie and he is trying to take a shot on Betty now that she’s available.
And now, our favorite comic book high school gang have their own groupies!
Enter: Maria, Sheila & Kevin
Those three friends are genuinely concerned about the well-being of Archie and Betty but maybe their methods aren’t the right ones, but don’t worry! Jughead is there!
Definitely, the ALL NEW Archie is a blast and I am looking up for reading the first TPB.
WE AIN’T… WITHOUT JUGHEAD BEAT… OR MAYBE WE SHOULD
Jug? Care to mark your legal name here?.
In the case of this sample of Jughead #1 was a disappointment that I couldn’t believe. (I wasn’t harder on my rating of this sample just because I found it unfair to the Archie comic to be dragged with a lower general rating)
If you remember, I told you that, Jughead, in the All NEW Archie comic, he is easily the best character, so my expectative about reading this sample were quite high.
However, it’s like you’d be reading the Jughead of the past, and worse since the artwork is a crap (and that was the nicest way that I could say about that “drawings”).
Don’t get me wrong, the Jughead of the past was charming and funny, but we are supposed to be reading a comic book that it’s part of this “ALL NEW Riverdale” reimagined comic book universe, so I can’t understand how Jughead can be so different in his own comic book from the way that he is portraited in the Archie main comic book.
And honestly, the artwork is SOOO LAME that I can’t believe that the artist had the cynicism of cashing a paycheck for “drawing” that garbage.
It's not easy to update a character like Archie who is outdated almost by definition, but Waid & Staples somehow pull it off by delivering just the right level of cheesiness - it's fun and feels (more or less) contemporary, you know, but it's still Archie. Well done!
In this day of revamps, reboots, and retro-love, it's not hard to belive that, after 75 years, an ARchie reboot was mandated.
But, what IS hard to believe is how little they actually needed to change to make this timeless character compelling and relevant for a new generation!
Yes, they added the trappings of modern-day society (Cell-phones, apps, hashtags, etc.), but at it's heart, this is still the same Archie we all know and love.
With all credit to the spectacular creative team of Mark Waid and Fiona Staples (both of whom are legendary comic icons), this comic really sparkles from front cover to back. Even if you only have a passing familiarity with Archie comics, the characters are still immediately recognizable, and their dialogue sparkles.
A hugely promising start to a much-anticipated series; highly recommended.
**4.5/5 stars. I just read this on my train ride home, it was so good! I've never read any of the Archie Comics before so I was excited to start the 'new' series. The art is by Fiona Staples, who does the art for Saga!! So I was really diggin that. I'll definitely be checking out the next issue!
I have never read the original Archie comics. So of course, I’m reading this because of the Riverdale TV series.
Overall, not a ton happening in this issue. I do like the art style. I’m not a huge fan of Archie breaking the fourth wall to bring us up to date on what’s currently happening.
Looking forward to reading the next issue either way.
I've been reading Archie comics since I was a kid. They're some of the first comics I started reading. Life distracted me and I haven't been reading Archie (or any related titles) for years, but I still think fondly of them. When I heard about this reboot, and who the creative team would be, I got pretty excited. Mark Waid has written some awesome stuff (Princess Leia's one of my favourite series), and Fiona Staples' art is gorgeous. Take a closer look at her cover for this issue:
It's easy to tell this is Fiona Staples' art. Characters look pretty cool and I'm liking the modern appearance to everything. And at least now I can understand why ladies would be romantically interested in him. He's a good-looking guy who plays guitar, capable of a long-term, committed relationship. And I have a thing for redheads. Hello.
The writing is pretty good. I'm not blown away. I expected more because it's a reboot and I would've liked to see more risks being taken. That said, I recognize that it's a first issue and there's a lot of room to improve/change as the series progresses.
Has Betty always been able to fix cars? Because I love that. And I love that Betty and Archie have an established history from childhood. I'm curious as to how things will happen when Veronica moves into town. I'll be adding this to my pull list.
I've been reading Archie comics since I was a child. It's something that is mindlessly fun like The Simpsons where all characters and their situations end up EXACTLY as it was at the start of the comic. It's an endless loop of sameness. For that time, it was perfect. Re-reading it now, in my adulthood, I found it not quite as enjoyable. But this, was a much needed reboot. Usually, I say, 'leave the classics alone'. But, Waid and his team have clearly improved on it. These timeless characters have been made 'modern'. There are cell-phones and laptops. The traditional characters written with deeper context. A quick change here and there to keep the soul of the old with the trappings of the new. It was great to read. It was great seeing how Archie and the gang would be in this modern world of curious bystanders. I especially liked how they've expanded the characters and introduced more diverse people.
This was just an intro to the series. I'm EXCITED!
Before I started reading Superhero comic books, and any other type of comic books actually, I have been an avid reader of Archie. I had a small collection of these before. They, unfortunately, got donated to charity because we didn't have enough space when we moved. But at that point, I thought I was outgrowing them anyways. I stopped reading them.
I know this new version of Archie has been out for a while. The reason why I haven't read it was because I was having a hard time getting a copy. It intrigues me because I want to know how close they're going to make it to the original story from the smaller version. Yeah. Sorry. I dunno how to call the previous Archie comics. Haha. I'll stick with the smaller version. Haha.
Okay so... to start, I absolutely loved this. Not only because the illustrations significantly changed, but also because it was told in a very interesting way.
ARCHIE IS BREAKING THE FOURTH WALL! AND ITS AWESOME!
In the original Archie run, there was always a love triangle/square involved. There was Archie, Betty, Veronica, and sometimes, Reggie. I always thought Archie liked Veronica more, but in this story, Betty and Archie was a thing since they were very young, being next door neighbors and all. Then an incident happened, which had them go their separate ways. I've only read this first issue, so I'm not exactly sure what caused the #LipstickIncident is (the cause of the breakup... which I'm thinking is because of a girl), but I'm going to read the next ones until I catch up.
If you have read Archie before, in the older run, you'd definitely enjoy this. I definitely did. So much nostalgia as I was reading it.
Another Free Comic Book Day success story. I wouldn't have even picked this up for free if my son didn't grab it, as I never liked Archie comics growing up. But since it was already in the pile when I got home, I gave it a read, and have to admit I'm ordering the first trade paperback because I found the story so fresh and compelling.
This is my first time trying out an Archie comic as I have only really been interested in comics in the last few years but I was highly recommended this one by a good friend of mine. I went into this knowing very little other than it's about someone called Archie and it's contemporary, but that's pretty much all you need to know to start off.
The story is easy to follow, there's nothing brilliantly clever (yet... maybe in later issues?) and nothing overly unique, but the characters are likeable and relatable and easy to follow. We see our main character Archie just as he's split with his girlfriend after a 'lipstick incident' and we have no idea what this is, but it's a pretty easy story to pick up and enjoy from the get go.
I think for me the best part of this was certainly the actualy art work as it's drawn by Fiona Staples who is a fantastic creator and really knows how to make dynamic and interesting people. I enjoyed seeing her turn her hand to something a little less wacky and magical than Saga which is Sci-fi/Fantasy and seeing how she pulled it off.
Overall it's just a start point and so I liked it, but I wouldn't say I'm 'into' it yet. I have issue #2 waiting for me to read it so will do that very soon and once I have done so I'll probably decide if it's a series I'll go on with. So far it's fun and likeable, but nothing to yell about. We shall see, currently 3*s :)
I am a life-long Archie fan and I was pretty excited to hear of a reboot with Mark Waid at the helm and even more so when Fiona Staples was added as the artist to start the series off. Archie may hold a lot of nostalgic value, but seeing them move forward into the modern world is like having my cake and eating it too.
Outside the vibrancy of the updated designs, the character complexity Waid has created is exactly what this franchise needed. Riverdale has been reborn into the 21st century, but Waid has managed to keep with the roots of the main cast- Jughead's deadpan snark is overwhelmingly present, Betty is everyone's sweetheart and Reggie is still kind of a fuckboy. The best thing to come out of this is that Archie is no longer just the indecisive dick who is leading Betty on; in this issue it's clear their relationship was ended mutually with the mysterious Lipstick Incident.
While we're being reintroduced to the cast, we also see that there's some scheming going on in the background. A handful of classmates who are (perhaps unhealthily) invested in Betty and Archie as a couple want to "help" get them back together and Jughead plays all sides in order to do what he thinks is best for his BFF. It all ends just as he planned. (Is it obvious yet who my favorite character is?)
Well it's a new run, reboot of archie and I loved the new illustrations and the story. Admittedly I haven't been a big follower of Archie and I know the broad strokes but haven't read it properly yet. But will look to remedy that. This starts when Archie and Betty breaks up and the entire school is shocked and want to know the reason behind it. It was fun read.
I have always loved comics, and I hope that I will always love them. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics or Diamond Comics or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on the international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I can. I Love comics to bit, may comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and then just Keep on Reading.
This all new Archie comics just got better. Always fun to read, the adventures and misadventures will make you read about them more. Plus all of them was way hotter in this new version. Aha! Archie was so handsome, even Jughead and Reggie darn it! Can't wait to read the next one I gotta see Veronica Lodge!
full disclosure i only got around to reading this because riverdale was so good and it got me intrigued. i really loved the art style and the frigid wind of teen drama has been missing in my comics life
Well this was a dud. First of all, Archie constantly breaks the fourth wall. I didn’t mind it in the beginning to sort of establish the readers. I think it’s kind of Mark Waid’s style, so I don’t mind it. However there was constant wall breaking from Archie in the middle of the story:
“Archie: In the meantime, if you have any suggestions about how to get over Betty, I’m @Archiecomics #LipstickIncident”
It felt like he was more of a narrator than an actual character in the story. It didn’t help that a lot of time is spent with characters who aren’t Archie or the established characters. There’s a lot of people trying to get Archie and Betty back together. Jughead is kind of in that group but it’s a bunch of new characters who’s names I don’t think are even given.
It’s also super unrealistic. Archie has never been realistic but this is just…ridiculous. These three random kids are really invested in getting Archie and Betty back together because…they ship them? That’s not how people act. Yes, teenagers have ships but they’re between fictional characters or maybe celebrities. Not other students. Other students don’t give couples ship names like “Bettchie”. They don’t give a shit.
This was just a bad comic. I couldn’t get invested in the characters because I either didn’t know who they were or they were lol-so-random-meta characters. Will not be continuing. Glad I didn’t spend money on this.

With the reboot of Archie through the increasingly popular Riverdale series on television, this comic reboot unfortunately lacks some of the creativity of the former. Saying this. It does hark back to the original comic series with a modern update that should please the modern teens. Overall, it's interesting but aimed at a market that maybe a little advance for the subject material.
I have never read any of the Archie comics before but I enjoyed the reboot. I love the show Riverdale and I love the fact that it is getting the comics new readers. The artwork was beautiful. Cute start to the story and I look forward to reading more of it. Very short though.
