4.5 - Where did this book come from STARS

*this is a super short review but I hope to come back and add more later 03/06/17

I quite literally stumbled upon this story by accident. I was googling images for a snarky meme when an image someone had created showcasing a quote from the book popped up as an option. I wish I could remember what I had actually searched or the blog I ended up on when I saw it... but I can't.

Anyway, THIS WAS A GREAT ACCIDENTAL FIND!

It is a Dystopian Romance as the title would lead you to believe.... BUT this is not a smutty book, nor is it a mushy romance. There are a few make out scenes but the actual sexytimes are fade to black so if you are one of those folks that prefers to not know the details then this would probably be a good fit for you. Personally, I'm all for the details of the sexytimes, but I didn't mind much that it was glossed over in this one. There was plenty of action and the characters were well developed.

I plan on reading the next book in the series at the earliest opportunity.

I enjoyed this one! I didn’t know what to expect, but Reaper was a great surprise! The world-building was intriguing and complemented the storyline. Aerina and Marcus were well defined and had nice chemistry. All in all, Reaper turned out to be a nice escape read with a strong romance that kept me turning the pages.

I devoured this book - I loved the "perfect" world ending up not so perfect after all, a heroine who isn't afraid to stand up to anyone, and the whole structure of the society and varying cultures created in the book were awesome. Great dynamics between the main characters, too.

Checkmate!
This is the first book that I've read by this author and I will be reading more! I loved this book! There are more in this series, but this is the first book and can be read as a standalone. I'm not sure about the rest, but I will let you know, when I'm done reading them. This book is about a post-war era, and is set in the City of Alba, in California, which is on the ocean. There are people who are high society that live inside the walls of the capitol, and then others that live close by, like merchants, and farmers, which all are considered Alba citizens, but have different bracelets so they can only go to certain places. The Virmortus or Reapers, are the protectors of Consul (almost like a President), soldiers of Alba, and executioners. Now that you have the basics, lets get into the good parts! There is an attempt to assassinate Consul Julius on Founder's Day. The Virmortus takes care of the problem, but there's one issue, a Senator's daughter is accidentally caught up in this. A Reaper ends up just knocking her out to let the Consul deal with her fate. Aerina Delacroix lives in the walls of Alba, and is of the high class called Patrician. She's the daughter of a Senator and she's very feisty, but never feels like she belongs anywhere. Marcus Trent is a Reaper, he also lives in the walls, but like all in his job, his house has/is a bare minimum. He is also the Virmortus Alpha Leader. When everything goes down at Founder's Day, Aerina is an outcast, which leaves Marcus as her friend. Except Reapers don't have friends, feelings, emotions, and/or anything that can impact there duties. Still he can't turn her away, but he does keep insulting her to get her to leave. However, she can take it and give it back. Due to both of their pasts, his is unknown, hers is known, plus their class, they can't be together. He wants better for her, not knowing how she's treated. She doesn't care about anything, except being with him, which is forbidden and his class can't marry. That's just part of it. The bigger part, someone is out to assassinate Consul Julius, frame Aerina (which would lead to her execution), and kill anyone who may know. There's also outside groups who are thieves and drive "Mad Max" type vehicles. Also, there's another huge city called the Southern Empire. There's a lot of secrets, twists and turns, and why the original war started. Is everything happening now, to start another war? Will Aerina and Marcus even survive to think about a future together? One thing is for sure, not everyone will make it, if this war occurs! Who can anyone trust, other than themselves?

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader's copy of this book provided by the author.
Over all, this was an enjoyable read. This book started out with a very slow flow to it. It did pick up almost a third of the way in and at that point it sped up & the story pulled me in, so that I couldn’t put it down. The world building could have used a bit more in the beginning since I felt like I missed some info somewhere. It did sort itself out by the the time the action picked up. The characters, Aerina & Marcus, were interesting, I definitely favored Marcus as the strong silent type. Aerina was a bit hard to warm up too since she seemed a bit like a spoiled rich girl at first, the one we all wanted to hate in school. But she redeems herself in the end, where I end up liking her. The one thing that bothered me about Aerina in this story, she always seemed to solve everything, from Marcus’ behavior to all the things happening in the story, like she had psychic abilities or something, she just always seemed to deduce what was needed next, whether it was to calm Marcus down or to find a clue or what someone was thinking, it was just too smooth/easy. I did feel that in the ARC copy, there were a lot of proof-reading mistakes, they may have been corrected before going to print. Definitely a book worth reading.

Post-war dystopian romance about an Alpha Virmortus/ Reaper Marcus, (consul assassins that keep the peace), and Aerina the Patrician (High-society senator's daughter) who've known each other since childhood, piquing each other's interest.
Sick of her status, Aerina masquerades as an entertainer one day, unaware that the dance troupe were going to be slain because of an assassination attempt on the consul president. And slain by Marcus! Even though she survives this attempt on her life, political chaos, rival techno-savvy empires, a framing attempt, hacking and the undeniable drool-worthy six-packed killer, turn her world upside down.

This was a fun read, and I found myself unable to put the book down, waiting for the sparks to escalate between the two protagonists like a young gossipy school-girl. The world is built up with very nice and descriptive prose, and action was easy to follow along and imagine in your head. Marcus and Aerina are believable characters with realistic dialogue and reactions to the horrifying events around them.

Definitely would recommend this book to anyone loving a book on denying attraction, dystopian castes, and computer hacking!

I enjoyed this book. This is the first book in The Secrets of Alba series. In this book you meet Aerina and the rest of the Patricians, a far 'superior' race of people.

She didn't like to adhere to the rules of the land and wanted to be different and spent her down time with people from the 'lower' class'.

She liked to spend time with the leader of the Virmortus, Marcus. This was frowned upon by her parents and everyone else in her town.

Their friendship grew into a relationship that brought shame to her family, their love grew stronger and they went against everything that they had been taught from birth to fight to be together.

Aerina was a very strong character who did what she wanted to try to bring about peace through all of the classes. Could she do this? would she find happiness in the end?

I will be going forward to read the second book in the series. I hope to find more out about the other characters in this book. I want to see how they grow and if their wishes come true.

I have not read this genre in a while and was delighted to put my toes back into the water. I love the strong characters in this book. Aerina is a strong willed girl that is searching for her place in a world that has many restrictions placed on the different castes. She follows her heart and the need to do something that is right, even if it bucks the system. Marcus is the leader of the Virmortous, those that enforce the laws. He has been trained at a young age that nothing matters but his job. Aerina finds a chink in his armored heart and together they work to try and save their world.

An interesting Roman take on a futuristic LA after a second civil war over some mysterious Technology. I’d describe it as Divergent with Roman inspiration. There’s futuristic tech like holo-devices mixed with villas and the equivalent of Roman senators, down to their different-colored garb. The romance is in a Romeo and Juliet style between two characters from different “castes” in the society, but for the most part it felt a bit forced until near the end. There just wasn’t a spark and the main character, Aerina, was quite frustrating in her continuous bad decision-making without reason (the book could do with more emotion and internal discussion), which made it hard to understand why Marcus would risk a lot to be with her (note: a little explicit). I also have a pet peeve of changing POV in the middle of sections (paragraphs even), especially to a random character, but I liked getting both Marcus and Aerina’s POVs. The beginning is a little slow and some scenes felt unnecessary but I very much enjoyed the action and romance at the end.

This was a really good book. It's only second time I read a dystopian book and I can say I wasn't disappointed.

I really liked Aerina, she didn't know where she belonged but she didn't let anyone change her mind on anything.

I liked Marcus, he may be a hard man and doesn't show any emotions he does care about someone even though he tries and not shows it.

I can't wait to read the other books.

Reaper is a new world techy story.

The characters are intriguing and the plot is a great play on how technology impacts the world

It lost a star as there were slow points which made it hard for me to stay in the story at times.

Overall a great read. Won’t be reading the next instalment though

Exciting, fast-paced and impossible to put down.

Reaper merges the three genres of Romance, Dystopia and Intrigue in the most exciting way. It is situated in the small nation of Albus during post apocalyptic times, where the nation is celebrating ‘Founders Day’, the escape of their predecessors from War-torn LA.

Aerina Delacroix and her family are members of the Patrician class, who set the policies and vote upon social and other issues of Alba. She is the daughter and only remaining child of Senator Anthony and his wife, Raina, something that Aerina carries continually in the back of her mind. “This is all your fault”, is the phrase that continually cycles in her head since the death of her brother, and subsequent breakdown on her family.

Marcus Trent, Leader of the Virmortus class, the assassins who do what needs to be done to maintain balance and serenity in order to bring the peace that is the slogan of Alba. The personal chant within his head is “Nothing matters but your job,” and he would kill anyone who posed a threat to the Consul Julius, leader of the small nation of Alba. “It was how his men had earned the nickname Reaper; one only saw a Virmortus when death was imminent.”

“Every action has its pleasures and its price.” – Socrates.

This is the quote beginning Chapter One, and so we launch straight into the story of Aerina Delacroix trying to live a life outside of her own, that if caught will change her life forever, where she assumes the identity of a Pleb class dancer entertaining the masses on Founders Day, as the Consul Julius and his protectors, the Virmortus look on. Her secret seems safe until one of the dancers attempts to assassinate the Consul and is taken out by the Virmortus, who then deem all of the dancers as a threat, subsequently taking every one of them out, including herself. She recognises Marcus, whose life she saved as a child, and exposes her identity, realising then that Marcus already knew who she was.

Even as she survives that event, her action has broken the sacrosanct laws of Segregation between the classes and the price was that she made a pariah of herself. No one will associate with her, and her future job prospects are in jeopardy. Her only source of comfort is Marcus, the assassin who almost killed her, who was the boy that always fascinated her, now is the man who attracts her in a way that she can’t control. The chemistry between them is off the charts.

The dark Alpha Virmortus is the only light in her darkness, she has nothing left in her life but to live. Ironically it is Aerina who is the only light in Marcus’ dark life of assassinations and death. Aerina never thought her life was perfect, but she was naive as to the plight of others in the other classes that made up Alban society. As Marcus’s group serve to dig into the plot behind the assassination attempt, Aerina refuses to be side-lined, not in his professional life, and certainly not in his private life. But the Rules Of Segregation carry a heavy penalty. Then there is her desire to explore life outside of the city walls.

Reaper can be read as a stand-a-lone, if you wish, but Ms Winsemius definitely has depth behind her series, and that can only be explored it you read on into “Patrician” and finally “Outsider”. That’s where I’m going anyway.

Thank you Lindsay Winsemius, for making Reaper available to the Quirkey Readers group.

A fresh twist on a popular genre. The writing is addicting and storyline is original in its own way. From strart to finish you can't get enough. This story was so good. The plot was planned out perfectly. The writing flowed at the right pace and it never got slow or dragged out. From the first chapter you are thrown into the action. The connection between the main characters is a long time coming. I loved that Aerina and Markus were such strong characters but have weaknesses that they each compiment with eachother.Overall this was a book I enjoyed immensely. I can't wait to read more from this author.

Reaper (Secret of Alba Book 1) by Lindsey Winsemius

5 stars
Reviewed by Char Webster for Late Night Books and Reviews

Reaper by Lindsey Winsemius is an amazing dystopian novel set after what the author calls the Great World War, in what today, is Northern California. The world had changed dramatically, the population was annihilated, City-states took control of different regions and the people were ruled with deadly control. Their lives were severely restricted to maintain the “balance.” Alba, the city this book centers around, has been completely isolated from the rest of the world since the Great War and the residents were not permitted to venture beyond the city walls.

Aerina is a member of the Patrician caste, the most elite of the residents, but hates the restrictions placed upon her within society and her caste. She longs for adventure, fun, excitement and information about the outside world. Aerina secretly dressed as a lower caste dancer to participate in the Founders Day Celebration. During the performance, one of the dancers attempted to assassinate the leader of the city.

Marcus, the Alpha Virmortus, is the leader of the military, nicknamed Reapers. They are extremely deadly and efficient in everything they do, especially protecting the city. He was brought up to believe that the only thing in his life is his job, which makes him extremely controlled, showing little emotion. As soon as the dancer approaches the leader, Marcus immediately eliminates all of the dancers in the troupe but spares Aerina, to fulfill a debt he owes her for having saved his life before. Marcus knows Aerina’s impetuous nature had led to her accompanying the dance troupe and that she was not guilty of collusion.

Aerina’s life was spared, but her place in society was decimated. She suddenly became an outcast, not welcomed anywhere. Her friends avoided her, her university professors shunned her and even her parents ignored her. To fight extreme boredom, and longing for adventure and answers as to why the dancer attempted to kill their leader, Aerina visits Marcus.

Marcus is drawn to Aerina but tries to fight his attraction, feeling things for Aerina that he had been taught not to feel. Aerina had always been fascinated with the sexy Reaper and spending more time with him only intensified those feelings.

There was great chemistry between Aerina and Marcus throughout the book. Their story was believable and I was routing for them the entire time. I loved the suspense aspects of the book and the author threw in a few plot twists that were done well.

Reapers was an exciting, fast-paced read that was well-written. I am not usually a big fan of dystopian novels, but I really loved this book. I look forward to reading the next book in this series!

What a fantastic book! I loved reading about Marcus and Aerina and the Virmortus. I loved practically everything about this book. This is such an underrated book that more people NEED to check out.

Be prepared, because the story starts with a bang. You jump right into the action from the very first page. This is a fast-paced story that never had a dull moment. I didn't even realize I had reached the end until I flipped the last page on my kindle.

The story is told in third person and set in a dystopian world. Our main characters, Aerina and Marcus, must discover the truth about Alba before it is too late. The romance, mystery, and action was executed flawlessly and I am very impressed.

"Nothing matters but your job"

Marcus is the deadly Alpha Virmortus, who is a combination of an assassin a, a commander, and the police. He likes to be in control of everything-the Virmortus, his emotions, and even Aerina. But he is not your typical "I am male, hear-me-roar" alpha. He doesn't try to control everything about Aerina, just when it comes to her safety. In other words, he doesn't suffocate her, just protects her. Marcus is actually a vulnerable guy. He doesn’t feel worthy of love and Aerina, because of his past. He struggles with his loyalty to the Consul and Alba and his need to protect Aerina. Marcus is a very complex character and he felt very real to me.

"This is all your fault"

It is very difficult to find a female lead that is strong and smart, but doesn’t come off as stubborn and naive. Aerina is that type of character. She doesn’t cower and hide from the truth, but she tries to unravel it. She is independent and fights for what she thinks is right even when others disagree, but isn't afraid to ask for help when she needs it. One of my favorite things about this book is that Aerina does not hide her feelings about Marcus. From the very beginning, she admits to herself and him, that she likes him and pursues him, even after he rejects her. There aren't many female leads that actually go after the guy instead of have the guy come after her. Her relationship was Marcus was so delightful to read. She also doesn't hide anything from Marcus, which is nice relief. I know they have past, so I hope we get to read more it in the future.

I picked this book when I was browsing through Amazon and it sounded interesting and it was free so I thought I would give it a chance. Boy, am I glad I did, because this is a great dystopian story that I think does not get enough attention. I can't wait for the next book!

The Global War had been going on for a 100 yrs.
Marcus Trent (aka Reaper, Virmortus leader, assassin) is responsible for the state’s security.
Consul Julius is the supreme ruler. His son Niko does what he wants & unfortunately is next in line.
Ramus was the technician.

Aerina Delacroix (21, impersonating a Plebeian, Littleton college student) is a true Patrician & was raised in the Alban Republic.
Aerina family consists of: Raina (mother), Antony (father, Senator of Society), & Max (brother) who passed away.
Kevin (professional dancer) is the owner of Trinity Theatre. His dance troupe includes: Julia (professional dancer), Mychel (professional dancer), Jamia (Julia’s sister, professional dancer), Cassandra Redding (Aggie, assassin, prostitute, professional dancer, P/G) & occasionally Aerina.
Aerina’s Littleton college classmates are: Katy, Lance, Becky, Helen, Stephen, & Jana (Aggie),
Aerina’s BFF is Lina.

A month ago Aerina had nearly been executed for treason.
Cassandra was killed.
Finals & Graduation was fast approaching.
Aerina & Lina were going to the Patrician Graduate Ball.

What did Aerina need Simon West (IT programmer) help for?
How will Aerina & Marcus relationship pan out?

Warning: This book is for adults only & contains extreme violence, adult content or expletive language &/or sexually explicit scenarios. It may be offensive to some readers.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written post-apocalyptic love story book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of very unique/colorful characters to keep track of. This could also make another great post-apocalyptic love story movie, animated cartoon, or mini TV series. To be continued? Not my normal read but it grew on me. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Reaper by Lindsey Winsemius is a Dystopian Romance set in a post-apocalyptic future in a north American citystate called Alba. It is a very readable book; the narrative flows, the novel is well constructed, the central characters are sympathetic and there is sufficient romance, action, adventure and technology to keep the eye racing across the pages. Alba is well imagined in terms of its structure, its technology, its geography and its politics. As it has a rigid caste system it is of questionable moral value but the reader is provided with no valid alternative; the world beyond Alba is primitive and violently chauvinistic. While the threat posed to Alba is internally generated the fire power comes from a rival southern society which, again, is not presented as a viable alternative to Alba so that the reader is to some extent conflicted; both condemning Alba for its inequalities and yet rooting for it to survive the external threat when it happens.

There is a similar conflict in terms of genre in that the presentation of the main characters is typically romantic; the eye and hair colour of both characters is regularly referred to as are their individual physiques and the clothes and shoes that they, particularly Aerina, wear at any given time. This romantic preoccupation sits uneasily with the science fiction elements of the novel and would, I think, tend to alienate either target readership. I struggled to visualise Alba in any great detail and feel that the emphasis on the appearance of the two main protagonists was developed rather at the expense of depictions of the wider environment: I was left with no mental image of the Delacroix house, Marcus’ house, the sounds and smells of this terraced city state and wish that I could have been given more descriptive detail.

Overall Reaper is a good read and I am certain that with such a competent debut Lyndsey Winsemius’ work will find its niche.

4.5 stars!
This was the first book I have read by the lovely Lindsey Winsemius and I am now in love with a new world. I couldn't stop smiling from the second I cracked this open and I loved how there wasn't a case of insta-love!
The relationship between Aerina and Marcus was perfection! I absolutely loved those two together and everything about them was amazing. They are both frustratingly stubborn and I loved how they helped each other grow. They are definitely one of my favorite couples ever! Also, the sexual tension was off the charts... Not even kidding. I was in agonizing pain throughout most of it but it was all worth it. This was a case of star-crossed lovers and it was executed perfectly. The pace of their relationship was utterly amazing and it definitely had me flipping through the pages like a maniac.
The character developments that both Aerina and Marcus went through were more than satisfying, to say the least. Their actions made me so incredibly proud and I loved how Aerina wasn't afraid to speak her mind. This book was also told in the third person so we get to read from both of their POV's and it was pretty fascinating!! Of course, I loved Marcus' POV a little bit more.
In case I need to make it clear, I am now officially obsessed with Marcus! That man drove me insane!
This book was very fast-paced and addicting. It kept me at the edge of my seat and the plot twists were pretty mild but I enjoyed them nonetheless. It was an epic romance and I can't wait to continue with the series! I am missing these characters so much already.

This book surpassed all my expectation. When I first read about this book I thought it sounded really good. The thing that kept getting me was Dystopian. Ive read a few of them but not many. Once again i was like we will give it a try. When I first started reading i was at an impass... do i keep reading do i stop? its good and im liking it but not really getting into it. Read another chapter then that turned into another chapter and another then by the time i knew it I was at the end of the book!! To say this book was good is an understatement. for me not being an avid Dystopian Romance reader it was amazing.

I loved the characters. Marcus is the reaper and does he wear that title to the T!! Aerina or Rina as sometimes called by friends has only ever known peace but there is a little rebellion within her. Shes got a smart mouth that you'd think get her into more trouble than shes already been in. She carries guilt around with her every day and more gets added to it as this book goes on. there is an undeniable connection between her and Marcus but what he does for a living doesnt warrant him to have any feelings or emotions. day by day, week by week Rina is breaking down those walls within him. Could they possibly have a future together or will she finally see all that he is capable of and go running the other way?

Yes this is a romance story but there is SOOOO much more to it. You not only get the romance of Marcus and Rina but you have suspense and the storyline/plot is beyond words. I loved this book and if you are looking to go outside the norm for a romance novel this would be one to try with.

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book.

Would you give up social status for one night of fun? Would you give up social status for the one you fell in love with? What if the one you fell in love with was a trained assassin? What if he tried to kill you on your one night of fun?

Those are all the questions that Aerina had to go through when she was caste out of her social status for her one night of fun when everyone in the dance crew was killed, except her. Marcus, the Reaper, is a trained assassin and let her live because he knew she didn't try to kill the head senator. Marcus let her live, but why? Did Marcus love her? Was there something behind him saving her the whole time? Now she owes him a debt of gratitude or was it already paid?

Marcus and Aerina go through hell and back for each other. He can not get her out of his mind and she is the same. The author makes it seem that they will defy all odds and make it to the end and have their happily ever after, but will they? I wanted to throw my kindle more than once because Marcus could be so bull headed and just wouldn't listen to reason, however Aerina seemed to be the same way, so in a sense they were perfect for each other. I just wish love was enough, sometimes it is but Reapers never marry...

During this book I was brought to understand that when you love someone social status or not, that maybe love is not enough. This book will throw you for a loop in more ways than one so hang on tight!

I LOVED this book. Could not put it down in fact. And am now a dedicated follower. I cannot wait to continue this journey into the next book! And that is what this was for me. A journey. Not just a simple book that held my attention.
Aerina is a Patirican, basically royalty. As such she is expected to behave, look, and well just BE a certain way. But she cant. What begins as a little defiance by dancing with one of the other castes, ends in tragedy. It also opens her eyes to so much more that has been hidden from her for so long. She knew she should fear the Reapers, but cannot fight the draw she feels to one in particular. Even after he almost kills her.
Marcus is death. Literally. If he comes for you, it IS the end for you. Yet he could not kill one little woman with fire in her eyes. His debt was repaid. Now he could get her out of his mind. Or could he? When he almost kills her, he assumes that she will be too afraid of him to come around. So why is it she surprises him and actually comes knocking one night?
While the threats to Alba and Aerina are looming ever closer and darker what is Marcus to do?It is his job, no much more than his job. Nothing matters but your job. When he begins to fit the puzzle pieces together he realizes he has as much on the inside of the city to worry about about he does from the outside!

I really enjoyed this book. It follows the story of Aerina who is a member of the ruling caste in the city of Alba. In this futuristic new world, the different castes in their society live separately with their own roles to play and mixing is frowned upon. Aerina is curious and strong willed and as well as having friends among the different castes, is in love with a reaper, a man trained to defend the city and a trained killer. Marcus fights the attraction he has for Aerina and almost kills her when a member of the dance group she has joined (unknown to her people) tries to assassinate the Albian leader. He lets her live but she becomes an outcaste among her own people for her association with a different class. Even after being seriously injured by Marcus, Aerina still cannot keep away from him and he fights his feelings for her but they are thrown together as Aerina is targeted by someone wanting her dead and as she figures out details about an impending threat to their city. This book was well written and keeps a good pace throughout. I shall look forward to the next one in the series!

I was given an ARC for my review, my thoughts are my own.

I will admit, I had trouble getting into this book at first. I started to read it and put it down and came back to it and I'm glad I did. At first, I wasn't sure what was happening but as soon as Marcus saved Aerina, I knew I wouldn't be able to put this book down and I couldn't.

Marcus and Aerina live in a dystoptia world and they are of different castes. Aerina is the daughter of a Senator and Marcus is a Reaper-think death, he is a killer and not to be taken likely. Yet the two of them do fall in love and uncover a war that is on the horizon and traitors in their midst.

This book was filled with action, suspense, romance. It had everything you could want in a book.

So, if you were like me at first and you couldn't get past the first few chapters-keep reading, everything will explain itself.
