I really enjoyed this historical romance by Ms. Carpenter. It was such an easy, engaging read, with the tension building steadily and plenty of plot twists. The characters had emotional depth and substance, and I liked the mix of likable personalities and those who were downright unpleasant.

Violet was an engaging heroine. She was compassionate, loyal, and intelligent, but she also had an impulsive side and just the right amount of naughtiness, which occasionally landed her in trouble with Mathew. Mathew was the perfect match for her. Protective and supportive, he had plenty of female admirers hanging on his every word, but his attention was firmly fixed on Violet. His natural charm made him easy to like.

Violet and Mathew finally admitted their feelings for each other at her parents’ anniversary party, but their journey was far from smooth. It was an emotional and intense ride filled with danger, suspense, betrayal, and blackmail as they did everything they could to stop Lady Louise from ruining any more lives. Louise was a truly nasty piece of work, and to make matters worse, Violet’s brother had now taken an interest in her!

I loved all the cloak-and-dagger intrigue, scheming, and plotting, along with the many secondary characters who added so much to the story. Ms. Carpenter kept me guessing right to the end, and I found myself falling for the characters, faults and all. The sizzling chemistry between Violet and Mathew felt genuine, making their romance all the more enjoyable. This was a thoroughly entertaining read that kept me hooked from beginning to end.

Viscount Matthew Beaumont and Violet Harcourt had been friends, since they were children, even though he was a couple of years older than her. They had only grown closer the older they got. They became practically inseparable when Matthew misspoke in front of Louise whom had a bad habit of blackmailing people. Someone had to put a stop to Louise, and they thought they would be the perfect pair to do it. Everything was going great, until Violet's brother Simon decided he had feelings for Louise. A fantastic story with action, suspense, intrigue, and romance a bit of something for everyone. I really enjoyed this story.
