DPs are now meshing into 2-3 basic globs for me! This one is where the bff's big bad ranch owner brother is the H, who thoroughly disapproves of the h but she keeps going back for the staple insults.
H named King – check. Alpha Cowboy, huge Ranch owner – check Chick magnet but long celibate- check H’s sister is the h’s bff – check
Orphan Annie h, a model who’d rather teach KG - check h displays cooking/secretarial/ general doormat skills - check h misjudged, labeled, abused - check H hateful and unwelcoming during her visits – check h humiliated/banished but still keeps returning for more - check
Contradictory statements and whiplash moods - check Local history talk - check
One storm/sickness comforting scene gone south - check Feel my chest hair/pelt/underbrush scene – check An accident/illness when the helpless h needs TLC and the H whisks her off to his ranch - check
And... Oh but my asshat moves only cuz I loved you since you were jailbait and I was the creepy older guy who should have known better – eyeroll!
The hero (King) is a jerk (verbally abusive and rapey) to the heroine (Teddie) and she has no backbone. Somehow she fell in love with him, probably due to forced proximity. King is Teddie's best friend's (Jenna?) brother and she occasionally spends holidays with King and Jenna's family. I think he's a jerk to her to push her away because he's secretly in love with her, too. So there's a little angst there but eventually, I got irritated with the repetitiveness. He's 34 and she's 20 (close to 21). I think they knew each other when she was 14, which would make him 28 at the time. (*cough* jailbait! *cough*)
Lack of communication is the main conflict. 🙄🙄🙄 King believes that Teddie is a tramp/slut because she models part-time and believes that she likes the attention of men. He doesn't know that she models part-time to pay for her groceries, schooling, etc. since her aunt is no help and rarely there. Teddie refuses to correct these preconceptions King has of her because she thinks he wouldn't believe her anyway. I don't know what she sees in him. Why would she want to be with him when he has misjudged her so??? I needed a good groveling scene, but alas, I did not get one. 😤😠🤬
This is the third book I've read by Diana Palmer. Fortunately, it was a short one. One of her other heroes is also named King and he was an alpha hole, too. The heroines don't know how to stand up for themselves, particularly to correct a preconception the hero has about them. Come on! Well, this book was originally published in 1983, so maybe this type of heroine was more acceptable.
Caution: The heroine was almost raped by her aunt's boyfriend when she was 15.
"Darling Enemy" is the story of Teddi and King. Teddi our protagonist is an orphan, and spends her days modelling in NY in order to pay her rent. She has a slutty aunt with leechy boyfriend, whom she avoids. Her best friend and confidante is Jenna, her room-mate who has a brother- the ever brooding and handsome King- whom she has secretly lusted after and who hates her because he believes all models are sluts, and sluts are bad bla bla. When one morning before vacations, King is ranting about Teddi to Jenna, she overhears and is hurt, he sees it and then goes to verbally abuse her while using her attraction against her, and then makes fun of her while inviting her to his home so he can do it all over again. Yes, she agrees. We see the same cycle throughout the book- our hero having preconceptions and slut shaming the heroine- who hear this- is as expected a virgin, kissing her to push her away and further shame her, verbally chide her and suspecting her of having an affair with every man. He even believed her potential evil stalker over her. Until the end the push and pull game had happened x number of times, and even when I thought it ended- it was another cycle of running away and chasing.... Read this if you want your leads to behave like 17th century horny puritans. And this is a common trope in DP books, Ive read it SO MANY times before, but today.. NOPE. SWE 2.5/5
GAH! I think DP was asleep at the wheel for this one. I just finished it and I can't even remember their names!
Anyways, the H has known the h since she was 14 and he was well into his 20's, when his little sister brought her home as her new BFF. I actually remember the sister's name... go figure. So the h lives in NY where she models to pay for her schooling as a KG teacher. The H thinks she's a slut because she models and that makes it easier for him to push her away. She got the message years ago, but he just won't let up. Every time she goes back to the ranch with her friend, he treats her like garbage with no apologies. The h is now 22 I think? But they still seem stuck in the same rutt. He calls her names, she gets her nose bent out of shape and refuses to tell him he's got it all wrong.
Anyways, it's like this; The H calls her awful stuff, then is nice to her long enough for her to be encouraged, then he decides she's a gold digging tramp for whatever reason, and it starts all over again. Usually he goes as far as to kick her off the ranch. I think he did that 3 times in a story that is only just over 100 pages!
I wouldn't marry him. If he gets his panties in a bunch over some perceived slight, he'll probably just kick her out again, wife of no wife.
And why on earth would someone have ranches in both Canada and Australia? That's just ridiculous. It's like DP couldn't make up her mind about anything in the story.
bleh.

I picked this one up solely because the H’s named King. Darling Enemy is an oldie (1983) and features Kingston Devereaux and Teddi Whitehall. This is one of her earlier novels, but she already had many of her trademark elements going. Teddi is an orphan that models; she’s also significantly (20) younger than her longtime love, King. (34) King is a judgmental cowboy who loves Teddi desperately, but is torn because all models are party whores... so he's broody and pushes her away to keep her safe from his “man feelings”. There are a few differences though; the meddler is an OM not an OW; King is Australian born living in Canada, and there is no secret/forced marriage, or even sex…not once.
Overall, it was ok. It’s short-ish so I didn’t really have to skim, but the entire book is pretty much based on miscommunications from both, so that got old.
Alright so this book was… a book. That’s for sure.
At first I was really excited to read this. I love cheesy romance novels, and it’s from the 80’s so you know it has EXTRA cheese. Although, this turned so bad so quickly.
This book turned rapey so fast. I hate to use that term but omfg. Kingston is 30 while she is 20, and repeatedly states throughout the book that he has wanted her for years. There is even a line at the end where he said “I wanted you when you were 15… but you were too young to fulfill my needs” UHHHHH EXCUSE ME.
There were multiple parts of the novel where he would say “you don’t know what you want. But I do. You want ME” like that is so controlling and annoying because Teddi was NOT stupid, he just preyed on her innocence and it pissed me off. He constantly made decisions for her, and would get mad when she made any for herself.
I understand this is from a different time where this was more normalized but 🤮. It’s trashy and was so creepy. Those who enjoyed it must’ve just brushed over that but jeez no thank you. I’ve only given it 2 stars because I liked it at the beginning, when it was kinda cute.
This is an older book and there is smoking involved. King is a rough and tough cattleman who has not been to charm school. He has no time for the empty headed glamorous model Teddi and he lets her know it. They trade insults back and forth as they both try to disguise their real feelings. A tragic event from Teddi's life surfaces leaving King feeling protective and this opens the doorway to love.
This was a nice read but not one of her best. Somehow the characters lacked passion and were kind of flat for me. Still a good read.
I have to stop reading these. I think I always expect them to be better than they are, but they're really just a rehashing of the same story over and over. A quick read and mindless - but kind of boring at this point.
Kurang greget kalau kataku. Terri terlalu 'letoy' dan Kingston terlalu jahat. Perkataan maupun tindakannya ke Terri terlalu berlebihan, padalan dia meng-claim kalau dia sudah jatuh cinta sama Terri sejak dulu. Tapi kok teteup aja "think the worst of her" alias su'udzon mulu? Pengin gaplok aja rasanya.
Betul, King kurang tersiksa.
Lemah, maksudnya. Hihihi.

Diana Palmer books are one of my guilty pleasure! No matter how much her books enraged me at times, I still loved it. I don't know why but I always enjoyed her overbearing, domineering, arrogant, judgmental and highly possessive heroes and her sweet, naive, feisty and virginal heroines. And besides, her books was always quite full of emotional and sexual tension which I loved in a book.
I’m so confused about the people giving this book 5 star reviews… (Very much a horribly written Wattpad feel)
I got this book at my library thinking this’ll be a stupid romance novel from the 80s, and it was. If that’s what you’re looking for, along with obviously outdated slang and “ways of showing love”, then this is your book.
I knew what I was getting myself into, the book just disgusted me more than I thought it would. Every conversation that’s suggestive is pretty much King pushing himself on Teddi and it’s kinda gross. He has a very “alpha male, men strong, women weak” vibe to him and it’s not for me. I know I’m not the ideal demographic for this, being a 17 year old and all, but it put a very icky taste in my mouth.
The good things about this book however, is the fact that they do not have sex, which was a saving grace. Unfortunately the bads outweigh it by a lot. The author talks a lot about Teddi’s boobs, the duo fights and then makes up like every second page and the other Characters have zero personality.
Once again, I’m not the demographic, but it sure was entertaining to read and compare to on how different todays romance books are, which in my opinion are waaaay better.
HAHAHAHA buku tolol astaghfirullooh. Cowoknya merkosa ceweknya (tapi gak sampai penetrasi) dua kali. Without sorry. Malah ceweknya yang disalahkan. Nylahin baju. Sudah tahu ceweknya perawan masih mekso aja nuduh pelacur dll.
Cowoknya sok macho banget, memerlukan kepatuhan mutlak. Tapi nggak peka. Nggak percaya sama wanita yang katanya dia cintai selama hampir ENAM tahun. Bangsat.
But still, aku sih no. Satu poin plusnya, age gap lumayan lebar (14 tahun).
Tapi aku belum kapok, kok.
4 Stars I purchased a copy of the steamy book Darling Enemy: Whitehall Saga Book 3 by Diana Palmer in Kindle Unlimited, and this review was given freely. Jealousy, desire, lies, and misunderstanding are combined in this story containing the romances of twenty-year-old college roommates Teddi Whitehall and Jenna Deveraux. Scarred by a rape attempt, the struggling college student, restaurant worker, and part-time New York model, tries to cover up her feelings for Jenna’s contemptuous and overbearing Canadian ranching brother, Kingston, just as he decides to act on his attraction for the woman he thinks is not an innocent. Contains touches of steam, some heartbreak, and two happy endings.
The heroine (20) is so drippy and becomes pathetic as soon as the hero is around. Her behaviour is infuriating - she has no backbone and wilts and almost passes out when he touches her. The hero (34) is conceited and unappealing and flicks between needling the heroine and groping her. He has no faith in her and treats her badly just because he lusts after her. The yes/no/yes/no thing he does becomes tiresome. 2 1/2 stars
Another wonderful story by this awesome author. King is a man you want to hate but there is a side of him that will absolutely melt you. Teddie is a young woman with secrets that only her best friend who happens to be kings sister. When ever King and Teddie are together all they seem to do is fight!
Enemies to lovers is the thing in 2021, normally I enjoy reading these types of books but this not ok.
Not enough character development, and pretty sure the author has never gone to calgary, banff and lake louise since they were described completely wrong.
Book may have been ok in 1983 but not 2021. Did not age well at all.
This book has terrible characters. I hated them. Asshole plus stupid girl…oh I love you for 4 years even know your a complete aggressive asshole who thinks the worst of her always. Who would want to spend there life proving themselves to a asshole. No thanks
I really enjoyed this book! Cried, laughed & loved along with the characters in the book! No one writes better than Author Diana Palmer! I owe all her book in both print & on Kindle & 3 Fire Tablets
Though I have enjoyed Diana Palmer in the past, this book is not the trope for me. The main male character is an anti-hero, surly and mean--- while the female is beautiful and a doormat. It was frustrating to read how she allowed him to treat her. It was originally released in 1983.
