About The Authors

Unnava Lakshminarayana (1877-1958) trained for legal professional in Ireland, was a patriot fired with zeal. He gave up practice and worked for the upliftment of the lowest of the low, the meek and the humble, widows, orphans and struggled hard in the days when freedom was not a very resounding cry even for the intellectuals. He was one of those firsts who thought of a separate state for the Telugus, a comprehensive Andhra.

V.V.B.Rama Rao (b. 1938) is a creative writer, translator and biographer. Post-graduated form BHU in English, he took his Ph.D from Andhra University. A teacher in English and ELT specialist, he has published eight original works in English, eleven in Telugu and more than 17 translations besides several articles in popular journals. He is now living in Delhi.

Profound Telugu novel Malapalli by Unnava Lakshminarayana. Its on social realism during British Raj. Those who can read Telugu should definitely read this book.

ఎన్ని దేశాల పోరాటాలు ఉన్నా భారతదేశ స్వతంత్ర పోరాటం చాలా ముఖ్యమైనది, చర్చనీయాంశంగా ఉన్నది. దానికి కారణం, మన దేశం బ్రిటిష్ వాళ్ళతో స్వేచ్ఛ పోరాటమే కాకుండా దేశంలో అంతర్గతంగా భావజాల పోరాటాలు, సాంఘిక దూరచారాలు మీద, మనలో పెరిగిపోయిన మూఢత్వం మీద కూడా యుద్ధం చేశారు (ఇది మిగతా దేశాల్లో కూడా జరిగాయి కానీ స్వతంత్ర పోరాటంతో పాటు జరగలేదు).

ఈనాడు మన పోరాటాల గురించి రాసిన సాహిత్యం చదివితే ఎన్నో పుస్తకాలు స్వతంత్ర పోరాటాలు గురించి మాత్రమే ఉన్నాయి గాని. అతి తక్కువ పుస్తకాలు అప్పటి సాంఘిక పోరాటం గురించి, మనుషుల్లో వచ్చిన భావజాల మార్పుల గురించి చర్చించారు. అలాంటి పుస్తకంలో ఉన్నవ లక్ష్మీనారాయణ గారు రాసిన "మాల పల్లి" అనే నవల ఒకటి.

ఈ నవల కూడా అన్ని కథలు లానే ఒక ఊరు కథ. ఆ ఊర్లో ఒక అణచివేత గురైన వర్గం, ఆధిపత్యం చాలయించే వర్గం. చివరికి ఎవరు నెగ్గారు అనేది కథ. ఎంతో సాధారణ కథలాగా అనిపిస్తున్నా ఈ నవల మార్క్సిస్టు భావజాలంతో జాతీయోద్యమ ప్రభావంతో వచ్చినా, సమున్నత మానవీయ విలువలకు పట్టం కడుతూ అస్పృశ్యుల జీవితాన్ని స్పర్శించిన ప్రామాణిక నవలగా ప్రసిద్ధి పొందింది. ముఖ్యంగా గాంధీజీ రాజకీయరంగ ప్రవేశం నాటి తెలుగు వారి సాంఘిక పరిస్థితులకు అద్దం పట్టిన ఈ నవల ఆయా చారిత్రక సామాజిక, ఆర్థిక ఉద్యమాల సందర్భాలలో వచ్చిన పరిణామాలను వాస్తవిక ధోరణితో సృజనాత్మకంగా తెలియచేసింది. ఈ నవలతో, తెలుగునాట సంఘ సంస్కరణ సాహిత్యంలో వ్యక్తమయ్యే దృక్కోణం సానుభూతి నుండి అభ్యుదయ వైపుగా, ఆదర్శాల నుండి ఆచరణాత్మక ఆలోచనలు రేకెత్తించే విధంగా సైద్ధాంతికభావజాల మద్దతుతో ప్రస్థానం ప్రారంభించింది.

ఒక హరిజన కుటుంబ గాథని ఇతి వృత్తాంతంగా ఎన్నుకొని సమాజంలో అట్టడుగు వర్గానికి చెందిన ఒక ‘మాల’ను నాయకునిగా చేసుకొని రాయబడ్డ తొలి తెలుగు నవలగా, సాంఘిక అసమానతకు, ఆర్ధిక అసమానతకు రెండింటికి కూడా సముచిత ప్రాధాన్యం ఇస్తూ రాసిన మొదటి అభ్యుదయ కావ్యంగా ఉన్నవ ‘మాలపల్లి’ తెలుగు సాహిత్య చరిత్రలో ఖ్యాతి పొందింది.

కథతో పాటు అచ్చమైన తెలుగు పదాలు కోసం, వాడుక భాషలో రాసిన నవల చదవాలి అంటే ఈ నవల తప్పకుండా చదవండి..!!
