Fort Lewis: the last bastion of civilization left in the western U.S.
The Undead: nearly seven billion hungry flesh-eaters roaming the world.
Carlie Simmons and her elite team: unstoppable and perhaps humanity’s final hope.
With research for the antidote underway, Carlie and her team at Fort Lewis face a new threat from an emerging force in southeastern Washington. A brutal army of former military prisoners, led by demented Lt. Colonel Ryan Mitchell, seeks to destroy all that Carlie and her fellow operators have fought for. Armed with a frightening technology for manipulating the faster-moving mutants, Mitchell will stop at nothing to control the Pacific Northwest. Amidst the chaos of open warfare at their doorstep, Carlie must face her own personal battles while racing against the clock to save what could be humanity’s last chance for survival and her own chance for love in a world spiraling out of control. The Gathering Darkness is the fourth volume in the Carlie Simmons post-apocalyptic series.
I can't believe I'm writing this based on the other two series I've read by Sawyer, but next page, PLEASE! Sawyer's work is generally so heavy with information that I've actually had to go back and re-read pages trying to figure out what just happened and HOW it happened. This book was more typical of my reading and I couldn't turn the page fast enough trying to see what would happen next. Two things of note are that I do truly miss the survival information he had in the previous series I read and that I truly am in awe of his writing abilities but more so if his visions of controversy which keep the story going. I have read others which while amazing, the author added so much turmoil which continuously extended the story, but became so far out there that I wasn't clamoring for the next book. Right now, the final book in Carlie's saga is already in my library and I'm headed there as soon as I click submit.
I have read none stop though 4 books of this series , and I am not stoping yet! I can count on 2 hands how many series I have been so impressed with that I read a book a day, just as I finished 1 I had to grab the next . I can't get enough of Carlie the kick ass heroine and her band of kick ass learn on the run zombie killers and crazy tyrannical humans trying to take over the world! Fantastic job J T Sawyer!!!
I am a fan of post apocalyptic fiction but normally not much into the Zombie apocalypse type books, but this series peeked my interest from the first page and I could not put it down and now will read more of them. I also have read some of the authors non fictions books and have learned several skills that I hope to never have to use, but it is always better to have something and not need it than need it and not have it.
Another non-stop action packed thrilling ride. I really enjoyed this book and read way too late into the night. Hoping there is another in this series. If not, I will start the next series by this author!
Book 4, The Gathering Darkness, is the ultimate zombie apocalypse! The characters are varied and dynamic, both good and evil. The zombies too. The action is fast, solid and bloody. I loved the entire thing!
After completing the first book in this series and writing a review, I quickly downloaded book #2 and got into it. When finished, I thought I'd wait until completing the series and then write individual reviews for the four books. Well guess what? I couldn't do it! So, I'm resorting to writing a single review that can be used across the entire series.
Through this series, JT Sawyer takes readers along on these special missions to find a cure that will rid the planet of this lethal virus. Each book has its share of zombies, gore, evil humans, mixed in with a smidgeon of hope and camaraderie. We'll see these primary characters grow strong and become fierce warriors as time moves forward in the storyline. Even the president's daughter, Aliza, transforms from a young, selfish and spoiled college student to a skilled fighter, and Jarred, the thief and smart-ass, becomes likeable. We'll see evil, ruthless people who want to rule the world and think nothing of human lives or preservation of it along with a special breed of zombies which are powerful, super human, extremely fast and vicious killers. The final book takes readers to Japan where the inhabitants suffered from Legionnaires Disease before the pandemic and zombies are much more dangerous, smarter and feral then those in the U.S.
These special teams led by Shane and Carlie are placed into extreme circumstances and must work together for the mission success above everything else. At times, team members find it difficult to continue with the plan and mission when one of their own is in trouble, and learn that sacrifices must sometime be made for the sake of the mission.
The stories are intense, plausible and real page turners. Readers will find themselves cheering for the good guys and feel the sorrow when losing a team member. This is a series that I highly recommend for zombie lovers and readers of this genre. Now that I've finished, I feel like I lost a special friend. Mr. Sawyer is a fantastic writer and I will surely look into more of his work.
John Podlaski, author "Cherries - A Vietnam War Novel" and "When Can I Stop Running"
Fantastic addition to the series. For short stories, they seem much longer than they are - so full of exciting storylines, and interpersonal interactions, as well as a peek into Carlie's psyche. The Gathering Darkness offered the usual edge of your seat action that's non-stop from cover to cover! Only annoying thing is...the addition of the word "eh" (as in, "it's cold out here, eh") which abruptly started being used during the middle of the second or third story. Definitely could have used less of the eh, or if had it had been peppered through the whole series it would have made more sense, not just suddenly thrown at us, then used liberally after. Moving on to the next, and perhaps last, in the series now. I can't wait!
Greatest zombie series of series. Read all of his books.
I was first introduced to JT Sawyers Zombie series the first wave. I could not get enough of his books. Now after reading his books I will miss his world. Oh and he had Strong female characters in every Zombie book, that's something else to love too.
