Her life depends on keeping magic hidden. His depends on uncovering it. When a mysterious spell binds them together, the distance between them becomes deadly.
RIVER
The ancient spell that keeps our kind hidden is fading. My youngest sister has come into her power without the mark that would tell us what kind of witch she is, and a strange magic is stirring in our small town of Hearthwick, threatening to draw the Assembly’s unwanted attention.
Then Hunter arrives, and the moment I meet him, my magic reacts.
Stranger still is the way Hunter looks at me—like he’s been searching for me. Beneath the unease is something even harder to the impossible feeling that I already know him.
I might have believed it meant something good if Hunter hadn’t come to Hearthwick determined to prove that witches exist.
When a spell I don’t understand binds us together, keeping my distance becomes dangerous. As the weeks pass, I begin to realize how much Hunter is hiding too. The magic may be forcing me to stay close to him, but it can’t explain why I’ve stopped wanting to leave.
HUNTER
My family has been searching for witches for generations, and the moment I touch River Thorne, I feel recognition. I’m close to finally proving that magic exists.
River offering to let me stay with her and her sisters in the apartment above their confectionery makes no sense. We barely know each other. Still, I take the opportunity to get closer to her, to learn her secrets, because my dad is running out of time.
The closer I get to River, the more my reasons for being here start to blur. I find myself watching the way she moves, the way she takes care of everyone before taking care of herself, and the way being near her starts to feel like something I don’t want to lose.
If things were different, I might be able to let myself want her. Instead, the crows are gathering, and the cold, skittering feeling under my skin is getting harder to control. Seven generations of my family couldn’t escape this. Why should I be any different?
Witches, dark magic, and cursesThe ultimate forced proximitySlow burn to open-door spiceFound familyForbidden romanceMagical bondSmall-town romance
I really enjoyed Curses & Candy! It had everything I look for in a paranormal romance: witches, dark magic, curses, danger, suspense, a small-town mystery, and a prophecy that kept me guessing.
River’s life depends on keeping her magic hidden, while Hunter has spent his life trying to prove that witches exist. So naturally, having a mysterious magical bond force these two together creates plenty of tension. It’s got forced proximity, slow-burn romance that gradually developed into something neither of them expected, and small-town atmosphere with the mystery surrounding the strange magic stirring in Hearthwick. There were plenty of secrets, and just when I thought I had things figured out, the story threw in a surprise twist that genuinely shocked me!
The combination of forbidden romance, magical bonds, family secrets, and found family made this a fun and addictive read. I also enjoyed watching River and Hunter's feelings change as they discovered that there was much more connecting them than either of them realised.
If you enjoy witchy romance, dark magic, forced proximity, slow burn, curses, suspense, and a good mystery with a shocking twist, this is definitely worth adding to your TBR!
I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next in Hearthwick!
A cosy witchy romance that turns deliciously dark? Witches, curses, forbidden romance, family secrets and a little sisterly chaos? This book had EVERYTHING I wanted from a spooky-season read. I devoured it in under 24 hours, and it was an immediate five stars!
I absolutely adored River. She's fierce, brave and determined to protect her younger sisters, Ashlen and Nova, even if that means sacrificing her own happiness. As the eldest sister, she's so accustomed to carrying everyone's burdens that she's forgotten she doesn't have to do everything alone. I loved watching her gradually learn to loosen her grip on control and allow the people she loves to support her.
And then there's Hunter. Intelligent, inquisitive and determined to break the curse that's plagued his family for seven generations. Unfortunately, his chosen profession involves hunting witches, which presents a slight complication when he meets River 😂
Their relationship was such a lovely slow burn, developing naturally from reluctant proximity into something neither anticipated. I particularly loved how they challenged each other in the best ways. Hunter encouraged River to lean on her sisters, while River helped him rediscover how to actually live rather than simply exist beneath the weight of his family's curse. The growing trust, undeniable chemistry and forbidden nature of their connection made their romance so compelling.
But one of my absolute favourite parts was the sisterly bond between River, Ashlen and Nova. Their love, loyalty and hilarious banter brought so much warmth to the story, with Nova providing some much-needed comedic relief. I loved that their relationship remained such an important part of the narrative rather than simply taking a back seat to the romance.
And can we talk about Hearthwick?! The small-town witchy setting was absolute perfection. I loved the sense of community, the close-knit relationships and the importance of family woven throughout the story. There was something so wonderfully comforting about this little town that, even as the magic grew darker and the danger escalated, the story never lost its cosy charm. That contrast between warmth and creeping darkness was one of my favourite things about the book.
And finally the mystery?! The magical atmosphere of Hearthwick was everything I wanted: cosy, enchanting and increasingly sinister as the secrets began to unravel. Audrey balanced the romance, family dynamics and suspense beautifully, revealing just enough to keep me guessing before delivering a twist I genuinely didn't see coming. And THAT ENDING?! Deliciously dark and twisty. I was practically biting my nails 😭
What a perfect spooky-season read! I already cannot wait to see what else the Witches of Hearthwick series has in store for us!
⭐ 5/5 – atmospheric, addictive and the perfect blend of cosy autumn magic and darker suspense. With a swoony slow burn, fiercely protective sisters, forbidden romance and a mystery that kept me guessing, this was everything my witchy-romance-loving heart could want 🍂🔮🖤
Witches, curses, mystery, romance, and a little sisterly chaos? Audrey Buchanan absolutely DELIVERED. I devoured this book in under 24 hours, and it was an immediate five-star read!
We follow River, a witch who was thrust into the role of caretaker for her two younger sisters, Ashlen and Nova, at a young age. Together, they run a 300-year-old confectionery in an idyllic Massachusetts town. But River has another responsibility: protecting the town’s witches from the mortal world.
With the Dimming, the magical barrier protecting witches, slowly dying, magic is becoming increasingly chaotic, and the future is uncertain.
Enter Hunter, an anthropologist desperately searching for a cure for the mysterious illness that has plagued his family for generations. Driven by an inexplicable and sometimes violent compulsion, Hunter finds himself directly in River’s path. When the two become magically tethered, River must unravel his family’s centuries-old curse while somehow keeping him completely in the dark about the existence of witches.
WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?!
One of my favorite parts of this book was the relationship between River and her sisters. Their banter, especially Nova’s comedic relief, provided the PERFECT balance to the darker elements of the magical world. The mystery kept me turning pages, the magical atmosphere was everything I wanted from a fall read, and that ENDING?! I was practically biting my nails!
Audrey created the perfect blend of cozy autumn vibes, witchy magic, family bonds, romance, and suspense. I genuinely couldn’t put it down.
This small-town romance seamlessly blends family history, curses, and witches. The sweet MMC helps the FMC learn to lean on her sisters, while she in turn helps him break his curse. Both characters are endearing and well-developed, and once they finally decide to go all-in, the chemistry is hot and the spice level is high. Overall, it's a heartwarming and steamy read that I couldn’t put down.
𝑭𝒂𝒗𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝑸𝒖𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒔: “If I had to lose myself piece by piece, I wanted this to be the last one I held onto.”
“‘Maybe some things are worth keeping because they remind us of what happened. What people got wrong. What we don’t want to repeat.’”
𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘: Firstly, I want to thank the author with providing me with an ARC copy of this book. With that being said, all opinions are my own. I enjoyed this story quite a lot! I love getting to learn about all the sisters, so I am hoping that they will each get their own book eventually. One or two plot points in here just didn't exactly click for me, but they didn't bother or distract me or take away from plot! Hunter is just ugghhhh, I adore him, watching him and River fall in love felt really organic despite the situations of the story. I do wish we would have gotten a bit of a hint on what or who books will come next, or some kind of epilogue to hint at what will come next (This was also a arc copy, so keep in mind an epilogue could be added) .
Curses and Witches small town cosy, perfect for Halloween story.I liked both main characters and the way they tried to resolve the curse. Both River and Hunter have a lot to deal with, and her family was great and close, which added a nice cosy feeling. The suspense and secrets got a really good twist, and it was an enjoyable read,I could feel the Halloween is close.
Thank you Crackedpepperbooks and author for arc,my review is honest and my own.
Will a love that was written in the stars over three hundred years ago break the curse that has been going on for seven generations?! 🐦⬛🔮🎃💫
Audrey Buchanan opens her “Witches of Hearthwick” series with a magical start from book one: “Curses & Candy”! What could be more forbidden than a love story between a witch and a witch hunter?! 💜👻🍬🔮
Meet River 🖤 She’s a baddie witch who is bold, brave, and willing to sacrifice herself (quite literally) to protect her family. She is the eldest daughter that is determined to take care of her younger sisters, Ashlen and Nova, all while trying to teach them how to control their powers. There is nothing she won’t do the make sure that her sisters and her family business will survive.
Meet Hunter 🧡 He is quite literally the epitome of his name…although he doesn’t hunt animals…he hunts witches, which might be a slight problem for River and her sisters. Hunter is intelligent, inquisitive, and daring. He is on the hunt to find the cause for the curse that has been plaguing his family for seven generations and there’s nothing he won’t do to protect his father.
Audrey Buchanan has such a wonderful way of setting the scene for her books with the cutest little towns and then inviting you into her characters lives, that quickly makes you root for your favorites! This book is all about protecting your family and the ones that you love. What a beautiful story of bravery, self sacrifice, and the power to believe in a love that can break any curse! And who doesn’t love a little spice along the way?! 🥵🌶️
This is the perfect book to get you in those spooky feels! 👻🎃 Go grab yourself a cup of hot apple cider, light a candle, and dive into this magical town that might hold some deeper and darker secrets.
I never wanted this book to end- I can’t wait to see how these beloved characters develop and what journey they will go on in the next book! Until then, I will be re-reading Audrey Buchanan’s “Crystal Lake Rescue” Series (if you haven’t read these books yet, do yourself a favor and go read those books! You’ll love them!). It was such an honor to read an early copy of “Curses & Candy”. I hope everyone loves and enjoys this book as much as I did. Thank you for sharing your books and your imagination with us, Audrey! 🧡🖤🧡🖤
River is a witch who lives in a world where witches are marked with the type of magic they have. When her sister, Nova, starts showing signs of magic without a mark, River doesn’t know what she is dealing with, and training Nova is proving challenging. River already has a lot on her plate at the age of 19. After the death of her parents, she inherited the role of guarding the towns’ witches from discovery, parenting her 2 sisters, and running their sweet shop.
When Hunter, an anthropologist intent on discovering witches to break a curse on his family, arrives in their town of Hearthwick, River just can’t handle another thing on her plate, no matter how charming he is. Suddenly, an unplanned tethering spell is cast where they can’t be more than 20 paces away or one might be unalived, so naturally he has to stay in River’s guest room. This closeness allows them to get to know each other and really bond, and they each end up wanting to help each other, and it turns out their needs are intertwined. That’s all I will say for fear of spoilers.
This book was the perfect cozy spooky season read with forced proximity. There was also plenty of spice, but it was perfect because their relationship was cultivated so well in this book. This is the kind of witty banter that I have been searching for, and the author does it oh so well! The end of the book does have some darker Romantasy vibes as well, so warning to anyone who doesn’t like that, but I thought it was perfect and really contributed to the twists and turns I didn’t see coming. I had never read a book by this author but she was able to create such amazing relationships, in addition to creating the perfect spookytober read. I will be reading all of her books in the future!
Thanks to Audrey Buchanan and the publisher for letting me read this advanced copy. I thoroughly loved reading about River and Hunter and can’t wait for the next installment of this series!
What a delightful read this was! I’m not usually one for seasonal books, but Audrey Buchanan has officially won me over. At this point, I’d happily read her grocery list if she’d let me 🤣
There’s something so beautiful about her writing. The way she sets a scene, paying attention to the smallest details, makes everything come alive. The magical imagery was so vivid that I could practically see the whole story playing out like a movie in my head. She made Hearthwick feel like such a whimsical little town, with its charming shops, magical atmosphere, and all those Halloween vibes that made me wish I could wander through its streets.
Every single character was charming and lovable, especially the sisters and their hilarious bickering and clever comebacks. I particularly enjoyed how different the sisters were from one another, each with their own personality and unique magic. Their lovely bond, the wonderful found family around them, and the romance brought so much heart to the story. And what I appreciate most is how, despite all the fantasy and magical elements, Audrey still manages to ground her characters in reality. Their emotions, reactions, and decisions feel so natural and believable, which made me love them even more.
What started as a cozy, magical read gradually took a darker, more action packed turn, with mystery and suspense at the center of it. I loved how everything unfolded, and there was never a dull moment. One minute I was laughing, the next I was getting emotional, and somewhere in the middle of all that mystery and magic, I was falling in love with Hunter and River’s relationship. Watching their romance unfold was so heartbreakingly beautiful 🥹
Honestly, Audrey has such a gift for storytelling. I love how easily she can pull me into her world and make me miss the characters whenever I’m away from them. If you’re looking for a magical read with a little bit of everything, I’d definitely recommend this one! 💜
Kindly received a ARC copy from the author and Cracked Pepper Books LLC in exchange for an honest review.
Curses & Candy by Audrey Buchanan
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5
🍭 Witch x Witch Hunter 🍭 Forced Proximity 🍭 Magical Bond 🍭 Halloween festivals 🍭 Found Family 🍭 Dual first person POV
"We have fudge, caramel apples, maple candy. There are little cauldrons made of chocolate..."
"I just wanted to kiss you." Her smile widened. "Well, you can do that anytime."
"Her family was extraordinary."
Curses & Candy is the perfect spooky read for this Halloween season! I enjoyed the Dual POV and found family throughout. 🐦⬛
I loved the romance between River and Hunter, these two were so sweet and loving towards each other. I admired the way in which they simply wanted to be together despite everything and make fudge. I want a cauldron made of chocolate now!
Despite Hunter aiming to find a way in which to break his curse he easily falls in love with the way River laughs and is captivated by her beauty. I loved how even after having barely known River's family for a short two months he knew he had to protect and do whatever it takes to keep them safe.
Garrick, Ashlen, and Nova are the best side characters! I admired that the curse brought everyone together and was a major plot point rather than something thrown in. Audrey has a captivating way of writing that draws you in for the magic of Hearthwick.
Highly recommend this for your next romance spooky season read! 🎃🎃
Thank you so much to Audrey Buchanan for the lovely ARC and beautiful writing.
If you enjoy cozy romances AND dark elements, you will definitely enjoy this one.
The cozy start to this book had me hooked right away. Hearthwick has all those seasonal elements and holiday flare that give it a very Halloween Town sort of feel that makes you want more of it.
River and her sisters consecutively clash and flow together, creating tons of fun character interactions. Garrick is a great addition to the group, toning down the wildness of the sisters, and I seriously need a book for him and Nova (please, Audrey? Please?). Hunter's search had me wanting to know the answers from the start, especially with him being such s sweetheart. He's one of those characters you just want to fix everything for.
When the dark elements really get going, buckle up! Audrey did such a great job with describing these moments in a way that will make your skin crawl at points. Chapter 35 had me reading chunks of it over and over again because it's so flowing and dizzying in a way that so perfectly encapsulates how meshed together and yet disorienting things have become. So, so good!
And then things are wrapped up in a way that left me feeling warm and fuzzy. I couldn't have asked for more. I highly recommend that you add this one to your October reading list. You won't regret it!
Curses & Candy is absolutely a book you cannot put down. It's entirely perfect for the month of October because not only do you get a cozy fantasy novel with a dark twist and undertone underneath, the amount of lore about witches that is built up within the world building is so fun. Don't even get me started on the tension built up between Hunter and River. Forgive the pun but it was in fact like a rope waiting to snap between them. Yet the addition of their romance didn't detract from the danger or in any way override the plot in itself. Honestly, I believe it could be this generation's Beautiful Creatures.
I would love to see spin-offs of all the characters and a prequel series about this family and the coven specifically because they're also interesting and honestly deserve to be more flushed out as main characters. Specifically Nova I really love the setup of her character and I feel like she served a purpose in River's book. There's so much under the surface with that that could be explored, especially given the different powers that each of the witches possess.
Audrey Buchanan does it again! Curses and Candy was a beautifully written love story wrapped in a heartache of a curse. This book was all Practical Magic vibes and set in a town that reminded me of Stars Hollow.
Dual POV is by far my favorite way to read a book especially in this story. The dual POV made it so much easier to understand the depth and feelings of River and Hunter. The enigmatic pull between them was palpable.
Not only is this cozy witchy romance full of banter and spice but it also has twists! Be ready to have your heart melted and then pulled in a direction that you won't know what is going to happen until the end. I can't recommend this book enough! You won't be disappointed 🖤
Tropes 💜 one bed ✨️ magical bond 💜 witch x witch hunter ✨️ forced proximity or die 💜 slow burn to open door spice ✨️ found family
I went into this thinking it would just be a cute and cozy fall read, but it definitely had some darker elements mixed in! I feel like the darker magic gave it a little extra edge and made it perfect for October. I really enjoyed the small town mystery vibes and the generational curse aspect. Hunter and River were cute and likeable, and getting both of their POV was nice. I appreciated how the story balanced a cozy feel with a darker, more mysterious atmosphere. The pacing was a little slow for me in the last few chapters, but overall, this was a fun October read with a great fall vibe! I definitely think these characters will be fun to follow, and I can't wait for more. Thank you to Audrey Buchanan for the complimentary copy! I am leaving my honest review voluntarily, and all opinions are my own.
I loved the idea of River trying to keep her magic hidden while being stuck in a situation that makes keeping secrets even harder. Being magically bound to someone who’s determined to figure her out is already complicated enough, but watching their relationship change as they get to know each other made it even better.
I liked that the curse wasn’t just thrown in for the sake of the romance. It actually gave them a reason to spend time together and slowly figure things out. There were a few spots where things dragged a little for me, but I was still interested in River’s magic, the secrets surrounding it, and how they were going to deal with the spell tying them together.
I’m looking forward to seeing more of Harthwick and where the series goes from here
Such a great book. It started out cozy and nice. This had plenty of magical sweets, small town, family history and secrets and some good spicy moments. River is hiding that she’s a witch from a long line of family witches. Hunter is on the hunt to prove that witches are real. Of course they meet and are drawn together by a bond and the hunt to figure out how to deal with it and a lot of discoveries along the way. If you like spicy, yearning and family secret, curses and witchy stories, this book is for you. It had some cozy moments and then some surprising dark moments but Audrey Buchanan did such a great job with this book. I absolutely love her books and this one was different from her last series, but perfect. This definitely got me in the Halloween mood for this weekend!
OMG! I loved it. Loved it. Loved it. It captured my attention and kept it throughout the book. The characters came to life, we well developed and you felt as if you were part of the story! River and Hunter ~ You could feel their magic. The other characters were also well put together. It is an exciting adventure you don’t want to miss if this is your genre of choice ~it is a must read. Don’t want to give too much away so you can enjoy the twists and turns on your own but READ IT! You will be glad you did!
Curses & Candy by Audrey Buchanan is Halloween in book form with cursed bonds, cozy fall towns, magical sweets, family secrets, yearning and chemistry so good it needs its own spell circle. It’s the perfect spooky romance to kick-off the fall season. 🎃🐦⬛
The tension? Jack-o’-lantern sharp. The spice? Pumpkin spice wishes it had this much heat. 🌶️🍂
Read if you love: witchy romance, cursed bonds, small-town fall vibes, dramatic crows, forced proximity, family secrets, and yearning thick enough to frost a Halloween cupcake. 🧙♀️🍂🐦⬛
I loved this book sooooo much!! Not just the story line but the aesthetic was absolutely perfect! 💜 Absolutely zero complaints! (Except I need more books like this - like now!) It has the perfect cozy October feel to it, with characters that are so instantly lovable. Not too much spice but a nice amount that doesn’t take over the story. I definitely didn’t see some of the plot twists coming and was not disappointed!
There need to be more books with this perfect cross of cozy and witchy, sugar and bubble, toil and trouble, happiness, love, and plot twists!
This book had me hooked from the start it was the perfect autumn read.
It kept me guessing the whole way through and there were so many twists and turns. It had everything and more! Witches, witch hunter, dark magic, small town romance, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, slow burn romance.
I loved the relationship between River and her sisters that she cares for. Novas humour and personality added some light hearted relief to a dark situation.
I can't wait to return to Hearthwick! Definitely a must read!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was the perfect October read. I loved the cozy, magical atmosphere from the very beginning. The mystery surrounding the curse kept me invested but the overall vibe really won me over. Hunter and River had an instant connection, which normally isn't my favorite. But it worked here. It never felt like they immediately jumped into love, and I appreciated that there was still room for their relationship to develop naturally. Overall, this was such a fun, magical read that was easy to get lost in.
This book is perfect for anyone who enjoyed Charmed or Practical Magic! The world building folds you right into the cozy New England town of Hearthwick, and the found family aspect had me feeling like these sisters were my actual friends 😩💗. I love the magic system, and the suspense that the writer builds! And the romance is off the charts, I was crying directly onto my kindle! Audrey writes in a fashion that makes me forget I am even reading a book, and I’m very excited to see more of this world.
A story about witches, magic, curses and Samhain. A story about love, family and community. A story with some spice and not just the ones in mulled wine or cinnamon rolls... A story that is only the beginning and I can't wait to read more. A story I am so glad I read. Perfect for the season (October). The characters are well described and three dimentional. The tension is there. The descriptions of the setting are good. Love the author's style.
I loved Curses & Candy! Hunter was such a sweetheart and I loved everything about him and the dynamic with River and all the other characters. You can't help but root for him. River reminds me of myself (besides her being a witch) and I loved how Hunter saw her and pushed her to what she needed. The story took hold of me quickly and I was genuinely surprised near the end. I think this is my fourth book by Audrey and she has yet to disappoint!
This story was full of the perfect fall vibes. Paranormal witchy elements, dark magic, spells, curses, small town mystery, etc. Hunter is a witch hunter. River comes from a family of witches but tries her best to keep her magic hidden. When her younger sister’s spell accidentally binds her to Hunter she tries to stay away but the pull between them is too strong. I enjoyed the banter, the spice, and everything from start to finish. I cant wait for hopefully more in this series.
Witches live among mortals, a secret that The Dimming is hiding for a little while longer. A curse that has gone through generations of men in a family. The FMC and MMC meet and find that their ancestors are linked. Through research and proximity, they are attracted to each other. They hunt to find a way to break the curse, and the true origin is revealed. A story of family and community supporting each other.
Cursed & Candy is such a cozy romance with an amazing plot that truly pulls you in! The author did a fantastic job explaining how each group of witches works and what their marks mean, and the relationship between River and Hunter was so well executed—an overall great read and perfect for the Halloween season! 📖✨🎃
