It Was the End of Days.

The world had less than seven hours to prepare. When it hit, the coronal mass ejection from the sun rolled back hundreds of years of technological innovation. Airplanes fell from the skies. Power grids crashed. Even electrical cabling was turned to slag. No internet. No cable TV. No electricity. No modern day conveniences of any kind, from fancy European sedans to smart phones to clean, running water. The entire world is plunged back into the Dark Ages in less than a second, courtesy of the most powerful Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) event in recorded history.

Television development exec Tony Vincenzo has always lived a high-society life, first in Los Angeles, now in Manhattan. As New York City tears itself apart in an orgy of violence, Vincenzo has to leave his high-floor luxury condominium on Central Park South's Billionaire's Row in order to return to his wife and young son in the Hollywood Hills overlooking LA. But the only way to get there is to walk, and Vincenzo is no Joe Survivalist—he's the kind of guy used to the trappings of the good life. While society unravels all around him, he has to not only make it out of New York alive, but across the entirety of a nation descending into feral madness.

His journey becomes more complex when he commits a truly selfless deed, and winds up with two young seven-year-old Daniel, an autistic boy ill-equipped for a life of hardship, and his sassy four-year-old sister, Gabriella. Together, the trio will need every stroke of luck they can find to persevere in the lawless lands that lie ahead of them…and survive the brutality of the serial killer Roth who pursues them.

“Welcome to the new normal,” Vincenzo said. “The world’s changed. This is how it’s going to be for a while.”

Tony Vincenzo is a television executive in NYC. He's just moved to New York and his wife and son, left behind in Los Angeles, are supposed to follow him after the school year ends.

On June 7, a massive electromagnetic pulse hits Earth and suddenly everyone's way of life goes back in time a couple hundred years - no electricity, no running water, no phone service, most cars, planes and other vehicles don't work plus much more and it will be months and maybe years before things get back to normal.

Vincent has to get back to L.A. and the only way to get there is to walk. So he starts off cross-country and finds that most people are willing to kill to stay alive including himself.

This is a super post-apocalyptic story, the first book in a series. I liked the detail that author Knight went into in the story, telling about Vincenzo's travels - from New York across New Jersey to Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio.

Along the way he has run-ins with gangs, a husband with a pregnant wife, two small children that need his help, and a serial killer.

I'm not sure when the next book in the series is due out but I hope it's soon.

One small negative: the author seemed rather obsessed with everyone's bowel habits in the story.

Good read

Well I normally don't do reviews on this type of books, but this one I felt I had to. Well written, ugly in its truthfulness about how thin humanity's morality an social veneer truly is. As a parent of a special needs son I can understand and completely empathize with Tony, who isn't even the parent! Not his responsibility, but yet still finds the compassion and wherewithal to stand up and do what's right, as well as what's most difficult. And to think he'd be the last guy who you'd expect to do so.
The only thing I didn't care for was the political crud. I'm not a liberal, but a firm second amendment and constitution believer. However I think this one's a bit rough and hard on its point of view of how it sees liberal democrats. After all we have enough hate and divisiveness in the world already. Keep it out of the books and you've got a great story.
Go Tony!

A very readable book about a giant solar event that wipes out all the electricity modern cars and devices. Vincenzo is stuck in New York while his family is in California. This story is about the beginning of his trek to get to his family. He starts out on foot leaving New York as is descends into anarchy with riots and fires. The book also tells the tale of a prisoner, Roth, who becomes a main character in this story as well.

Another masterful story

Stephen Knight has a unique ability to write stories that are very realist. You as a reader can almost put yourself into the characters shoes. Great story. Kept me up all night.

Looking forward to the next in the series.

As always...

As always a good read. No zombies but plenty of bad guys.
It's great to find so many talented indie authors and Mr. Knight is definitely one of these. Good characters, a plausible story line and a lot of action.
Will be waiting for the next adventure...

This book was great. The author captured the fear and emotions the end of the modern world would cause. I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. I read this in 2 days, was hard to put down. Loved it.
