Lightower Investigations is finally under new management. After years of cajoling and plotting by her uncle Gerry, Wendy Lightower has stepped in to run her family's business with the same efficiency she once brought to her beloved library. When her first client walks through her door, she is so eager to prove her abilities in her new role that she is willing to overlook who he is - the sensational journalist and general nuisance Jack Crosby. As she dives into what looks like a simple case of harassment, Wendy soon finds herself at the center of a much darker crime. Murder once again strikes her sleepy, seaside town, drawing Wendy into a dangerous plot that is inexorably linked to her own painful past.
Bewitched, Bothered, and Murdered is a cozy paranormal mystery and the third installment in the Wendy Lightower series.
I really enjoyed this book. It might be my favorite Wendy Lightower book yet, in terms of the murder mystery aspect. However, one thing really bothered me while I was reading that my brain kept coming back to. At the end of the second book in the series, Wendy made a decision. In this book, I was hoping that we would see the fall out of her decision, especially telling the mayor, and his thoughts on it. Instead, it was swept under the rug. Other than two very brief mentions, it was almost like the mayor never existed at all. That drove me absolutely crazy, and really took away my enjoyment of the book. I hope this issue gets resolved in the next book, but I seriously doubt it will.
The third book in the Wendy Lightower series is just as fun and enjoyable as the others. They are light reads that are good for a few hours of entertainment. Rylands writes great stories, with strong characters and interesting mysteries. The whole born witch vs. practitioner is nice touch to the world building she is doing with these books. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because of the typos. I don't typically grade down a star for that and actually want to call this four and a half stars, but the storytelling is so strong that it is really distracting when a glaring error jumps out at me and pulls me out of the story. Maybe one more pass by a proofreader or editor would have made a great book fantastic. All in all, I found this to be a high point in the series and look forward to the next installment.
I really love this story line from librarian to PI, my own daughter is a librarian but let's hope she does not go this route. Though I was hoping more for her to stay as the librarian as a cover, she's so good at it. Her friend Mandra was destined to be the museum curator and I love lead and hope she starts to work more with Wendy. A good PI can use those talents with the kind of clients the will get of the paranormal kind. Cannot wait for the next mystery to unfold.
This story was well worth the read. Wendy and Iran have taken over Lightower Investigations from her uncle whose health mandates that he take it easy. They have a new office and a new client - an obnoxious news hound who has offended a coven of witches. Meanwhile, Detective Milton needs their help on a ritual murder. As the pieces come together, Wendy discover that both case are really one and that they are linked to her own mother's murder years ago. Read it. Just. Read. It.
This book had all the usual elements but they were presented in a manner that keeps you wondering what is next. The characters seem to grow with each book and are developing in to believable people.
I've read parts 1-3 so far and they've held my interest from start to finish. When I started reading each one I didn't quit until I finished the book. I really enjoyed them and look forward to the next book.
