The Hard Riders #1

Buttermilk Ranch

Rate this book
Wendell Blackowl has spent all his life in the working cow horse show ring where toiling with sweaty cowboys all day is the fodder for wet dreams. Though privately he’s come to terms with his sexuality, publicly Dell’s had to build a façade. When his beloved horse Buttermilk dies, Dell finds himself at loose ends so he decides to pick himself up by his boot straps and do what he’s always wanted to do… open an environmentally friendly organic vegetarian café. Pace Avila, well known music critic, has been drawn to Austin by the live music scene. When friends invite him to check out a fresh new dinner experience, Pace reluctantly agrees to push the deadline on his national column. He isn’t interested in vegetarian food or a restaurant with the cheesy name of Buttermilk Ranch Café, but the moment Pace lays eyes on the stunning cowboy chef, things begin looking up. When openly gay Pace walks into his cafe and his life, Dell realizes he’s tired of living a lie and tired of being alone. When Mother Nature throws an unprecedented storm at Austin, the muddy waters threaten to wipe out everything Dell’s worked so hard to build. He soon realizes that with a man like Pace by his side, love really can conquer all.

“Don’t fuck with a cowboy if ya don’t want to end up on your ass, Pace. Hot damn, ya know I did.”

Hot damn indeed.

This was my first book by this author, and I have mixed feelings.

Logan’s portrayal of Southern culture and speech is just on this side of hokey, and the book has noticeable comma splices, fragments, and typos.

Dell Blackwell made his livin' in the working cow horse show ring. Now he runs his own vegetarian/vegan café.

Dell is in the closet.

No, scratch that.

Dell is a closeted, hot-as-sin Native American cowboy who also happens to be a 30-year-old virgin. He’s made out with a couple women, but has never so much as kissed a man.

When Dell meets Pace, he falls instantly in love and lust.

And by “instantly” I mean “on the second date.”

Pace, the blonde, slight, femme counterpart to Pace’s swarthy, masculine six foot two, is a music critic and makes enough money writing one music column to rent a huge loft apartment and buy fancy designer clothes.

Don’t question it.

I couldn’t help but think of picante sauce every single time Dell said Pace’s name. This proved distracting, because the men address each other by their first names, as well as honey and darlin', a great deal.

Dell practically leaps out of the closet as soon as he meets Pace. He holds Pace’s hand in public, goes to a nearby gay club, and joins a same-sex marriage rally where he makes out with Pace in front of TV cameras.

Dell has a come-to-Jesus moment about being gay:

It was tangy and so fucking delicious, he almost couldn’t get enough. I am such a gay man. I was meant to suck and swallow. DAMN!

I never want this to end! No wonder I’m gay! I fuckin’ LOVE cock and come!

Dell is happy to be gay!!!!!!!

"Well, boy howdy!” Dell whooped as he let Pace go.

See? He’s really fuckin’ happy!!!

Boy howdy!

Sorry, had to try it out.

This story is silly, but it’s also cute & sweet.

Dell and Pace are crazy in love. Pace is not shy, and Dell is a man starving for “cock and come” (see above), which makes for some spicy times.

I enjoyed the secondary characters, especially Dell’s pack of crazy (but supportive!) redneck friends. Even though Pace is a bit one-dimensional, I wanted him to be my BFF.

I also loved that one of the MCs is a proud Native American with long hair. That’s all kinds of sexy.

Plus, the HEA is about as sparkly as you can get.

Recommended if you are in the mood for sugar with caramel and rainbow sprinkles on top and can get past the cheesy writing style and rather ridiculous plot.

4.5 stars... I thought this was a really sweet book. I just loved Dell and Pace. Once they met, there was no looking back for both of them. I eat clean and still eat chicken/fish, some beef but dang I was wishing Dell's restaurant was real. The food sounded so good. I mean really good. This is my type of book, there wasn't a lot of angst between guys but with the storm. I loved how honest and straightforward they were with each other, no misunderstandings, just two guys who met and fell in love.

I got major secondhand embarrassment reading this. It was just bad. I got so sick of reading the MCs names. I did a search for both and in a 189 page book they were mentioned 1,000+ times. The only good thing about this book was when it ended.

Dell is a Native American cowboy living his dream of owning a restaurant after retiring from the ring. He is not out to the world but he is comfortable with his sexuality. He has never had a lover and never been inclined to find himself one. Until he lays eyes on Pace.

Pace is openly gay and a recent addition to the town. He is charming and instantly drawn to Dell. He can't believe that the sexy cowboy is single and inexperienced. But that's not the only thing that attracts him to Dell. He's also drawn to his sweet demeanor and caring heart.

Well, this was certainly not the story I was expecting from Patricia Logan but an enjoyable read nonetheless.

What I enjoyed the most about this story was watching Dell come into himself. True, his enthusiasm was a bit cheesy but early on we get to see how easy going and accepting he was so it was easy to see him giving in into his attraction to Pace. Although in the beginning I had my doubts about his pairing with Pace, I came to understand how they complemented each other. Pace allowed Dell to go at his own Pace while still giving him enough incentive to let go an be himself.

Unlike other books by this author, there wasn't a lot of angst but there was her trademark sexy scenes. Dell and Pace's chemistry was palpable from the very beginning and Patricia Logan didn't miss a beat in bringing it to the page when it mattered. The insta-love element is not a favorite of mine, but I could see how it could work in Dell's situation and came to overlook it as the story progressed. The interactions between Pace and Dell helped in that regard, showcasing their connection even if at times I thought they were moving a tad fast.

If you like your romance sugary sweet without too much drama then I certainly recommend you pick up this book. It had the right mix of elements to make it a sweet romantic read.

I might come back and finish this, but at 70% I've had it with the plodding dialogue and script. It doesnt even feel like a down home country western. Even the drawl sounds contrived.

Instant love. Adult closet gay suddenly had no problem coming out in a small town. Slang that was almost a caricature. Yes this story was all of that. I really enjoyed all of it. I just loved this 2 guys and the secondary characters. Don't expect great literature but do expect a happy read.

"It's been a while since I hit the town," Dell admitted, still somewhat in disbelief that he was on an actual date with another man. It felt so right, it was as if all the puzzle pieces had finally fallen right into place.

description

Avete amato i ragazzi della serie Invitation Only? Bene, qui li ritroverete tutti!!!!

4.5 Heart Review by Kat

I have stated before, but it keeps coming back to me, how fortunate I am to have been selected to become a reviewer and introduced to new books. I have grown to realize how few authors I was reading and how many really good authors I was missing out on. Patricia Logan definitely falls into the category of missing out on a really fabulous author! Her writing is clean, crisp and full of vivid images that awoke my mind. She kept me captivated from the very beginning and I only wish that I had gotten the chance to start the book earlier in the day so I could have read it straight through in one setting. As it was, I was found fallen asleep with her book still in hand on my iPad. This is a really great tribute to a wonderful writer, that I couldn’t put her book down, no matter how tired I was!

Ms. Logan tells the captivating story of Wendell “Dell” Blackowl, a very handsome Native American man that was a former working cow/horse competitor who retired after his beloved horse Buttermilk, who was his best friend since he was ten years old, passes away. After Buttermilk dies, he decides to leave the competition circuit with his other best friend, traveling companion and beard, fellow Cheyenne/Arapaho, Paisley Meadowlark. He decides to return to the large spread in Westbury, Texas his father, the famous cowboy and horse breeder Thomas Blackowl, had left him. Once there he plans to chase his other dream, to start an organic farm and open a healthy vegan/vegetarian restaurant.

Fast-forward two years to the celebration of the one-year anniversary of the hugely successful Buttermilk Ranch Café. Paisley has outdone herself for her best friend and has helped organize the extravaganza to celebrate their success. His best friends and most of Austin turned out for the event. One of his closest friends on the circuit, Branch, brought along his very cute little half-brother, Pace Avila, who was quite obviously living an openly gay lifestyle. Dell noticed the slightly younger, small built beauty and he awoke his desires immediately. Dell had not only been living deep in the closet but had never acted upon his desires, as he is a 30 year old virgin. Pace returns the next day, eager to get to know the gorgeous longhaired and built beauty he met the night before. He is immediately sure that Dell is not only gay but there is a major attraction by both men.

Buttermilk Ranch is the story of their journeys. Dell’s journey of self-discovery and Pace’s desire to not only date and bed the dark haired beauty, but to show him what true love really is all about.

The story is set right when SCOTUS was making its decision on same sex marriage rights. This story also includes a rich cast of family and friends that not only accept Dell’s new life with Pace but encourage their journey. It was very touching to see his friends, rough and tough Cowboys on the competition circuit, helping-out and accepting their friend for who he really is. I look forward to more of this wonderful and touching series of love and acceptance. I will definitely be looking into more of Ms. Logan’s other series as well. I am delighted to give this novel a solid 4.5 as I truly loved the book and can’t wait for more. I recommend you pick it up today!

Wendell Blackowl is ready for a new start in life. He has had a very good run on the working cow horse circuit but with the loss of his mare Buttermilk, he is ready to move on to his next dream. He is also tired of hiding his true self and if he could meet the right man he would have no problems coming out.
On the anniversary party of opening his dream restaurant, he meets Pace, the half-brother of one of his cowboy friends, Branch.
Pace is unlike any man he has ever met. He is flamboyant, confident and has no problem going after what he wants. What he wants is the sexy cowboy chef Branch introduced him.
First of all I need to warn you this story has lots of sex. Very explicit sex. If you are a fan of Patricia Logan as I am you already know this, if not be forewarned. Though I prefer tamer sexual content, sometimes you like to heat things up, and I know I can count on Patricia to do just that.
I love cowboys, and I love cooking so this blend was perfect for me. Make Dell Native American and Pace a dominant, flamboyant twink and you have a story made in heaven!
I will admit the story is a bit predictable but who cares. Sometimes predictable works, and it does here. There is some drama and near the end we get cameos from some characters from Invitation Only one of Patricia’s other series. I adored seeing Wade and Phoenix again as well as Maverick and Ricky.
I had only one small issue with the story. I felt their names were overused. It seems that Dell or Pace was n nearly every sentence, and it was a bit overwhelming other than that this story was amazing and one you didn’t want to put down once you started!
Buttermilk Ranch is a set-up for a new series, and I cannot wait for the next.

This is Patricia Logan light. This is a love-at-first-sight rainbows and hearts and a devastatingly handsome Native American cowboy turned restauranteur. A Patricia Logan story without BDSM or military men is unusual. A Patricia Logan story without angst, intrigue or bad guys? It might be a little too sweet for me, but of course it was going to work. Her books always do.

Dell and Pace are the perfect couple for Logan to weave around the story of America’s fight for marriage equality. Their relationship is very traditional and pretty conservative. Hell, Dell is a thirty-year old virgin. The men court each other sweetly. Dell is shocked by behaviour in a gay bar (before discovering that he really enjoys said activities with Pace).

With all this niceness, I should really have hated this book. But I enjoyed it. Logan’s characters are beautifully developed. I believe in the instalove storyline because it just works. Dell’s sexual self-discovery comes late in life, but with a childlike joy that is wonderfully contagious. I enjoyed the contrast of Pace’s inner strength with Dell’s physical strength. Pace’s self-confidence is fantastic - he is slight and more than slightly effeminate, but never apologetic, even among his brother’s cowboy friends.

Conflict in this story comes from Nature. Dell’s new business and his family farm face flood damage and tornado threats. Logan’s Texas is a wonderful community where neighbours help each other, cowboys support their gay friends and relatives and somehow the fight for Native American rights seamlessly meshes with the fight for marriage equality.

Again with the niceness. This is a glossy, idealised story. If you are tired of dark, angst-filled m/m, this will be a breath of fresh air.

M/M Romance
I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

Dell is a retired cowboy who also happens to be Native American. His speech, while traditional cowboy is somewhat hard to read, as it's hokey and "country". I did enjoy how he was not afraid to go after his dream, but felt that he was in the closet for all the wrong reasons.

I really enjoyed his best friend. She was just the right side of snarky when it mattered and allowed him to feel secure all on his own. I also liked how she was so encouraging towards him. However, my favorite characters were his band of cowboy friends.

You get to see Dell as a chef mainly - I wished that I were able to see his cowboy side more. He seemed slightly flat because of that.

Then you have Pace. While he seems like the best friend you never had, I did wish that he was more developed in his character and throughout the plot. Pace was just the city-boy playing the country boy, when in fact, he was almost neither in this story. It was hard for me to put my finger on who exactly Pace was supposed to be.

I did enjoy the support that Dell and Pace provided for each other, but this story was just a little too hunky dory and sugary for me.

I've read rave reviews about Patricia Logan's books. The blurb sounded really intriguing, so I thought why not? Maybe this was the wrong Patricia Logan book to start with.

This book was syrupy sweet, and filled with the overly used words, Cowboy (my cowboy, my hot Cowboy, my sexy cowboy, my big cowboy, you get my point), Darlin' and I don't know how many times I heard them say "they were falling for the other".

The southern culture and language was kinda cheesy. There was instalove! Everything just felt too perfect. There relationship, Dell coming out, yeah it was all a little too easy. There was no real angst.

This book wasn't badly written, it just wasn't for me.

If your in the mood for a sugary sweet, sexy love story... I definitely say I recommend this. For me it was just a little too over the top. I will give her work another try, because I have heard really great things.

At first I was like a vegan cowboy? Really? but it works. Dell was in a career that could be hazardous to his health in many ways. When a beloved pet dies, he decides that it was time to leave that career and go to the ranch.

With the help of his bestie, Paisley, they make his dream of a vegan/vegetarian restaurant on his ranch. A year after he opened the eatery he meets Pace. From there, the two fall hard and they fall fast. Their love forms during a time in this country where the GLBT community was on pins and needles waiting for the Supreme Court to make their decision. Pace stays with Dell through the storm and shows him how much being with man really is like.

I won't say what my favorite part is, but I will say it is the last chapter and epilogue.

I have never read anything by Ms. Logan before, but I have to say, after reading this book, I will definitely give her books a read.

This is one of those times that I wish I could see pictures of the characters. I wanted to see Pace so bad, especially when they went to the rally. This book was sweet and fun and at times serious. Café owner Dell meets Pace at the one year anniversary of his restaurant opening and boy were sparks flying. You could feel the attraction and you just couldn’t wait to see how it played out. I love Dell and how he just jumped in with both feet when it came to Pace. They are a sweet couple and I hope we see bits of them again in future books.

How could you not fall in love with Dell? He's sweet, charming, caring, loving, compassionate, selfless, innocent, doesn't have a mean bone in his body, and he sees the good in everyone including animals. I just loved him!!! Pace, was perfect for Dell. Also kind, sweet and loving, he made sure that Dell could be who he was, and be proud of himself and of each other...
loved this story!!!! Can not wait for more

Buttermilk Ranch by Patricia Logan is a delightful novel based on an insta-love trope that has a few gorgeous cowboys, a rather flamboyant music critic and a very interesting take on a first love/virgin lover plot line. In other words, author Patricia Logan does what she does best, take a tired trope and liven it up with a fun premise and interesting characters.

Wendell “Dell” Blackowl is a thirty-year old Native American who has been working a competitive cow horse circuit for many years. His competitions existed to show case how a horse can be handled in precision tests. Dell was at the top of his game when his beloved horse, Buttermilk, simply gives out and Dell loses perhaps the best friend he ever had. After retiring, Dell turns to his second love—cooking, in particular creating both vegan and vegetarian dishes in his brand new restaurant, Buttermilk Ranch Café. Dell has sunk just about everything he has financially into the café and it is beginning to turn a small profit! Now at it’s one-year anniversary, Dell stands on the precipice of financial solvency. However, some things have not changed since leaving the circuit, most notably Dell’s desire to stay in the closet and remain a virgin.

All may have gone according to plan had one of Dell’s friends not brought along his younger half-brother, music critic, Pace Avila. Pace is the polar opposite of Dell, being fully out and proud. Pace is also very taken with the polite and quiet cowboy who also happens to be a very fine chef. Slowly, Dell finds himself emerging from his self imposed closet and falling for the very man who could become the first lover Dell has ever had in his life.

When you read the story, Buttermilk Ranch, you may want to check your “reality” hat at the door. Author Patricia Logan writes an in your face novel that is bold, sexy and full of moments that will definitely stretch your imagination. If you are looking for characters that are fully grounded in reality, this is not the novel for you. However the emotions these men exhibit, the decisions they make and the journey they undertake together are well written. This is a fun romp of a story and somehow, despite the instant attraction and rampant desire for sex, it all gels—and makes for a delightful story. There is no big conflict here or real angst, in fact, the ease with which Dell finally leaves behind the lie he has been living for so many years is almost unbelievable and yet…it’s all in keeping with the easy going story this author has written.

Yes, there were times when the dialogue and story were way over the top. I felt that the number of times both Dell and Pace found “perfection” in one another was overused and got tired after a while. I also felt a bit confused about why Dell would have hidden his sexuality when his heritage recognized the “two-spirited” people. In other words, gays were treated with respect in his culture so I found it hard to understand why he would have hidden himself from his own mother. Finally, there was an incredible dump of introductions near the end of the novel—several characters along with the introduction of a BDSM club were thrown into the story line at what seemed like the last minute. To be frank, it made for some real scrambling on the part of the reader to keep up with all the names and relationships.

Despite these small glitches, Buttermilk Ranch by Patricia Logan was a light-hearted romp complete with sexy cowboys and a whole wealth of potential characters to explore in future novels. If you are in the mood for an insta-love story with hot men and sweet romance, this is the book for you.

This story was a huge hit for me. It was such an amazingly sweet story with a couple of fantastic characters. Dell and Pace just captured my heart from the moment I met them. I really liked the way Dell handles his "coming out" so to speak. It is done with so much lightness and humor. The interactions between Dell and Pace just made me melt. Dell just has a feeling of such sincere niceness that you can't help but love him. I like his kind of "roll with it" attitude. There are a few instances where you see a little bit of insecurity in Dell, but he always just pushed through and I like that. Pace is just so confident in himself that it's fun to read. He just is so understanding and nice when it comes to Dell's inexperience. I spent most of the time reading this smiling. I didn't want the story to end, I could have kept reading about these two forever. The cast of secondary characters in the book just enriched it so much. Dell's mom had me laughing so hard, and Paisley was just a dynamo. The story as a whole just flowed really well. I can't wait for more.

So this book was like a Happy Meal from Mickey D's. Tasty but not exactly filling! Rather cute premise - a Native American cowboy retires from working as a cowboy in rodeos to open a vegan restaurant that becomes wildly successful in Texas. Dell was a likeable MC and I appreciated his love of food. Pace, the music critic guy was OK as an MC but came on a little strong. So this was rather insta-lovey in a clunky way. What really bothered me though was the ham-fisted dialogue. The drawl and manner of speaking for the characters didn't exactly roll off the tongue. Just seemed corny. Also got a little peeved at the depiction of Juanito. Smacked of stereotyping. This is a new to me author and with this book as an introduction to her style of writing, I may give her the side-eye for future reads...

I really enjoyed this story. It was a sweet story.
Who would not enjoy a story of a Native American cowboy and the man who teaches him love is love. I am not so sure Dell was as much closeted as he had just not met the person he was meant to love.
I needed a sweet, happily ever after book and this hit the spot. May have found a new author to enjoy too.

I liked this - its a cute story; a cowboy vegetarian cowboy with a music critic. It's pretty steady for a while and then picks up as the 'team' pulls together and they meet some new friends in the area. Just not great...

Narration by Christopher Slye - solid narration. 4 stars.

Carino ma non soddisfacente nell'incredulità che un uomo possa reprimere i suoi bisogni fisici per paura ma, che poi si dà così, capisco che a volte i sentimenti nascono all'improvviso quando si ha la persona che ti completa.
