The book Blackout is different from other books about recovering alcoholics. This book is not just for people who are recovering from alcoholism it is also for people who know alcoholics. Sarah explains how alcohol was her way for dealing with life’s problems. This caused her to grow up without actually learning how to deal with problems on her own. She views alcohol as a crutch that prevented her from dealing with emotional and spiritual issues. When a person reads Blackout they are able to get an idea into what it was like to live life in such a way.
This book is also unique because it looks at alcoholism from the perspective of a woman. Sarah explains how society views women alcoholics different from men alcoholics. There are many things that an alcoholic woman has to deal with that an alcoholic man does not have to deal with including rape. Many of these issues have not been explored and Sarah is one of the first people to bring it to the attention of the public. Sarah makes sure that she is accountable and responsible for everything that happened in her life and she does not blame her situation on anyone else.

Still reading this but almost done and it has to be one of the best books I have read in such a long time . I personally cannot relate to her addiction - I don't have any of my own - it's her writing that is so beautiful and raw . She writes from her heart and soul and she's funny about the sadness and solitude of her love affair with alcohol . I gained a new respect for those working through addictions like this and how difficult it must be in this world where most occasions call for a drink . Great book , tough subject matter - thank you Sarah Hepola for being so honest . I will be recommending this book to everyone simply for the writing alone .

3.5 stars - quick and easy to read, at times funny, heartbreaking, and insightful, at times rambling and repetitive

Honest look at a drinking life. What it was like, what happened, what it's like now. Deep introspection I could relate to my own life. Well written, quick read.
