A Bipolar's Journey: From Torment to Fulfillment

Rate this book
"It was only when the author was diagnosed as a bipolar in 2003, leading to his hospitalization, that he first heard about this serious mental illness. From being comfortably perched as a successful entrepreneur, he was abruptly flung into terrifying, unknown territory.

Extreme mood swings from manic highs to desperate lows made life miserable. The awareness about this chronic, debilitating condition was almost nonexistent in India back then and the stigma, stifling. Disturbingly, the situation remains largely unchanged, unlike developed countries where support groups thrive.

Where there is iron willed determination, the biggest of challenges can be surmounted. The unstinted support of his family, close friends, mentors and medical team helped him in his arduous climb. Medical treatment needs to be supplemented by a healing regimen. Resolutely, he made yoga, meditation and spiritual advancement an intrinsic part of his life.

This cathartic journey ended up freeing him.

An inspiring story of resilience, his is a rare voice of hope from the East trying to reach out to millions of his community, saying,
Yes! A bipolar too can lead a normal and happy life.

A Bipolar's Journey may well help you walk away From Torment to Fulfillment.
So let's walk together."

The author claims his work (on the cover page) as a journey from torment to fulfillment. Nevertheless, for the purpose of my review, I rephrase it ‘a progression of a writer to a published author’. It might intrigue you how the two statements inter-relate and for that matter of fact what he has to share with the readers in this book? It’s about his personal tryst with his destiny. Interestingly, this is a question, that we all try to answer throughout our lives.

Generally speaking, as soon as we get to learn that the person in question is distressed with some medical ailment; a feeling of sympathy (and sometimes even empathy) creeps in. Very rarely, it happens that we witness and appreciate his personal scuffle within the mental boundaries of his mind. Just imagine, what if, the mind is also having an internal tussle? Is this explanation draining your nerves? Yes, it does and I completely understand. This is author’s daring attempt in sharing his personal life incidents and making us respect the other people’s thought process and prevailing conditions.

The author shares that he is afflicted with ‘Bipolar Disorder’. This is a kind of mental limitation which he educates you with, in the various sections of the book. Wonder – why I mentioned ‘Various’ sections of the book. This is because in the first part, he educates you on an emotional perspective and in the latter sections he turns towards some technical aspects of the ailment. All-in-all, he tries to fill-up the void in enlightening the readers about not-much discussed condition but which definitely call for an attention.

Read the work, to find out that what you or your known is experiencing is what happens with all and this is no-end, by any means. You just need to re-orient and re-align your energies and you will be back in action, only to move ahead! While others will get a soft hold on the emotions and get a chance to make promise to them i.e. to support the person in need with full grandeur. In the concluding section, he shares his own progress and sets an example to trust upon. With this attempt, he makes a thankful mention of one and all who had lend their support and laid faith in his capabilities.

I’m not much of a nonfiction reader, but when Mr. Nallawala approached me for reviewing his book, ‘A Bipolar’s Journey: From Torment to Fulfillment,’ I accepted without any second thoughts simply because I wanted to know more about bipolar disorder straight from the horse’s mouth.
Vijay Nallawala has bipolar disorder, a mental condition marked by alternating periods of elation and depression, which makes normal living strenuous. His book is a Bildungsroman, a coming of age story that focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood in which character change is extremely important.
‘A Bipolar’s Journey’ is the autobiography of a man who has defied all odds to emerge victorious in spite of his affliction and still continues to do so. There’s a frank openness in the writer’s voice. He confides in the reader all about his private life—every emotion, success, frustration, and humiliation— very honestly and authentically. He tells us the story of his heroic battle against adversity, prejudice, stigmas, stereotypes, of his will to succeed and his search for an identity in a country that lacks greatly in understanding the workings of the human brain. In the process of self-realization, I’d say he has become a beacon of hope for those who ride the same boat as his.
What is absolutely worth reading in this book is how the writer has explained such a complex and varied disease as bipolar in simple yet effective language. There are no medical jargon that may confuse the reader. Even someone with no prior knowledge regarding the ailment can understand fully what the writer intends to share. The language is simple and there is no attempt to resort to euphemisms. There is never a dull moment and I couldn’t wait to complete the book. I’d recommend everyone to read the book and learn something from it.

A very candid, authentic memoir that exudes the author's passion toward the subject of mental health. True to the title, Mr. Vijay's has been a journey from torment to fulfillment. To have been not only efficient, but also immensely resolute through the process of penning A Bipolar's Journey is worthy of every accolade.

Despite mental illness being a topic ridden with misunderstanding and stigma and fear, the writer has masterfully elucidated it hence enabling awareness and ease in the readers regarding mental disorders. The book generates attention, empathy and silent admiration toward those afflicted by mental illness, providing courage and hope to all those directly or indirectly affected by the maladies. It also prompts deep introspection of one's own life.

The initiatives taken by Mr. Vijay for the mental illness community and his own life are commendable! Towards the end of the book there is a sense of pride for all that the author has surmounted and is continuing to accomplish.

Respect,
Haalah.

A Bipolar's journey is the first book, that I've ever read that truly captured the unnoticed tyranny of this illness - and I hereby take this opportunity to congratulate the courageous effort by the author to depict the authenticity of his painful events along the journey in form of enlightenment, to so many, deserving so much to come out of this darkest tunnel.
The Author has done a tremendous job for writing such an important segment of reality, that's unnoticed in our society. The book showcases vivid, though painful descriptions reflecting back signs of determination and courage that lights hopes to many.
