Latter Day Demons #1

Hot Demon in the City

Rate this book
I am Lexsi Silver, and I will determine my own future. Most people consider their wedding day as one of the happiest of their lives. Most people are not High Demon. Just before my wedding on the planet called Kifirin, I decided I wasn't going to marry someone I'd never met. Kordevik Weth was a stranger to me and I wasn't willing to accept him. That's why I asked Aunt Bree for help. She had one condition. I had to live on Earth and take a job with Rome Enterprises in San Francisco. * * * * * My name is Kordevik Weth. My intended left me standing at the altar. Afterward, I got drunk and destroyed the bar where I'd gone to drink and forget my humiliation. As punishment, Li'Neruh Rath, god of my home planet, sentenced me to five years on Earth, working as a driver for Rome Enterprises in San Francisco. Every day, I curse the job I hold and the one who'd pushed me into it--Lexsi Silver.

This book wasn't bad. Far from it. It was entertaining and incredibly original. And, with me being a total sucker for paranormal fantasy, I really did enjoy it.

However, I found myself baffled at times. This books contains a crap ton of characters and a large variety of supernatural creatures, which were really hard for me to keep track of at times. . . And the next book will probably make me even more confused if we learn more about Kory and Lexsi's home planet.

Kory and Lexsi were interesting, but a bit childish at times. In theory, I should have liked Lexsi more, with her being so intelligent and kind and strong-willed, but she left much to be desired in the personality department. She was just kind of boring, in my opinion.

Kory, while no necessarily un-like-able, just made dumb mistakes involving his secrets. One of my biggest pet peeves in books is when characters keep secrets from the people they trust thinking they'll keep others safe in their ignorance, then make asses of themselves when the secret comes out and does more harm than good. It's an incredibly dumb move, and happens all too often. Also he seemed to develope feelings for Lexsi way too quickly, but that's another thing entirely. . .

Long story short: this book was good, but could have been better in the character developement and magic system departments. Will read on.

Ohhhh I loved reading this with a new setting for where crap high demon patriarchy crap won’t work. The set up for Lexsi and Kory was just so unexpected. I had missed Bree, hah.
I love how CS can mix the paranormal, sci-fi, and time travel up together and still make a great story. You see glimpses of the results of stuff Zaria/Corinne did in the R-D and First Ordinance series. I love hoe CS revives races thought too far gone to be saved.
This is a new scenario for the fish out of water trope. I mean who would pick a paranormal being being plopped down in non-magical San Francisco 200 years in the past? What a way to learn about your mate and survive in a world you aren’t used to.

I'm about 90 % if not more done with the book and there isn't even a kiss between the MC's. This book is definitely not for me. To little spice and no conection between the MC's in my opinion.

Love this series so far. Interesting characters. The plot is a bit convoluted and hard to follow but better than an the normal easy to solve mysteries.

It Grew on Me!

What did you like best about Hot Demon in the City? What did you like least?
I don't know what I expected, maybe the stereotypical paranormal romance. But, this wasn't it. Granted the romance seemed to come out of nowhere, one moment he didn't care for her and the next he was kissing her forehead and calling her baby. But, this story actually has a plot. That doesn't focus on getting the two character's together. And that is wonderful.

What aspect of Traci Odom’s performance would you have changed?
I'm not a fan of female narrators. I find male falsetto voices much more convincing than female baritone voices. Practically all of the male characters voices bother me. Lexi and Anita were find, even Hannah, but not the men.

Any additional comments?
This title is very misleading. The story focuses on much more than "Hot Demon". In fact, besides a few characters commenting that Lexi or Kory were attractive, their relative "hotness" had nothing to do with the story. Or anyone else's hotness. "Demon in the City" would work just as well.

Review: This was a new series, but familiar author with another spinoff set in a familiar world. Several years ago I picked up a book about rouge vampires that changed this old abused woman in the U.S. and that took off on quite an adventure of other planets, creatures and time bending. 22 books and 5 series later you have her granddaughter Lexsi, a High Demon escaping an arranged marriage to Kordevik and her planet Kifirin, to the past in San Francisco. Living in her Aunt Bree's house and working for a local TV channel owned by the Rome's, her friends embark on solving mysterious deaths and attempts on their lives as they get closer to the truth of what's happening. Slowly Lexsi discovers the "human" she has fallen for is actually Kory her ex-fiancé in the mix. Something in these stories always seems to suck me in and these are really good reads even though they tend to get pretty far fetched...

It's January 1st 2020 and I'm rereading this book. I reread Connie Suttle's books every year but this year I wanted to bring my New year's in with my favorite set of characters. 2019 was really hard for me personally. My father passed away, my mother had a stroke, my nephew was killed, I lost my job because I'm the primary caregiver for my mom and siblings. I lost so much but Connie Suttle's books have truly kept me sane and anchored. I love that her books are so interconnected and they've become like family. I needed them this year. To share in their joy and triumphs when I felt like my life was only filled with loss and endless responsibility. They helped me escape my pain and I'm thankful. I'm even more thankful that Connie Suttle releases new books all the time. I can't wait to see what joy she delivers to her fans in 2020.

What a great addition to the world that Connie Suttle has created and shared with us!

I really like Kory and Lexsi and company. I am even more excited for Spellbreaker and for the second book in this Latter Day Demons series.

I wonder what Connie Suttle's brain looks like. The thing that I like is that even though events seem to be circular, there is always a new element to this epic adventure. Every time that I start at the beginning and re-read all of the books there is something that I missed previously or something explained.

Let the cleanup commence...

Loved it

No spoilers. A very very well-written fantasy book. We have the usual werewolf, vampire and shifters but in addition a new breed of characters that did not feel out of place combined. Loveable characters. A strong female lead, a requisite alpha male, and a storyline that was easy to follow and flowed well. There is a happily ever after and no cliffhanger. A full well deserved five stars.
Loved this book, read it twice and would read again one day. On to book two. I can't wait to see Kory and Lexsi finally together with all their secrets out in the open.

Bree had a great idea

I like that Lexi’s Aunt Bree sent her to San Francisco to resolve an issue of witches and warlocks taking over the Rome’s enterprises. I also like that Kori and Lexus get to know one another after the arranged marriage since her birth. I am pleased that she has powers like Reah when her other 6 sisters didn’t get them. I really liked that she references so many of her uncles, Reah’s mates for teaching her so much. I will enjoy seeing what happens next with this couple.

First off I want to just say that I loved Connie Suttle. Okay moving on..I really loved this book, though it seemed like no sooner did I start reading it, it was over. Though that might have had something to do with me not wanting it to be over and reading it in one sitting.

The only problem I had with this book was trying to figure out where this book fit into her other book, like the timeline and such.

Overall I loved it and I am eagerly looking forward to the next book!

I have read and liked almost everything this author has published but this story seems very weak to me, it feels a bit like a recycled plot with uninspiring main characters. The main heroine ‘Lexsi’ is a bit ‘soppy’ and Kordevik is a spoilt teenager.

In the past the author has been able to resurrect poor storylines so I will read the next book in the hope that this series develops a bit more originality and Lexsi develops some independence and backbone.

More to it than the title implies

I almost didn't read this one because I figured it would be pretty shallow. In actuality, it was a pretty entertaining read, complete with new races, a criminal mastermind (or two), and some interesting characters. Oh, and a love story with not one, but two demons.

Like a said in my update I didn't finish this book. I found the character bland and the fact that the author never describes what supernatural being the characters are frustrating. Connecting with these characters is just impossible. They mystery and crime solving were good and the plot detailed but with boring characters I couldn't stay interested.

Dang, this is good!

Connie Suttle is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. She has done some imaginative world -and universe- building, has good characters, and uses proper grammar. Always a plus! If you're new to her work, start with the blood destiny series. Enjoy!

Different take on demons

Usually demons are mean, ruthless, and conniving. However, in this book they are the defenders against darkness. I find the storyline to be unique and refreshing. I loved all of the characters, especially Lexi and Kory.

Interesting and Action Packed

A great story line the sinks it's claws into the reader and pulls them along for the ride. The characters are realistic, smart, ruthless, unique and interesting. Great read.

Alright book

I liked the premise, but when it came to the story it was all over the place, very little romance and a lot of characters. Too many loose ends. Not sure if I will buy the 2nd book in the series.

Woah! A Connie Suttle where there's a hero who isn't a total douchenozzle who takes the heroine utterly for granted. Maybe these guys *can* learn.
