The Fixer Origins #2

Joan: Portrait of a Vengeful Young Woman

Rate this book
Joan deals out bloody vengeance and sharp justice to those who deserve it. Or for those who pay the most.
After years of bouncing around Europe, she thinks she’s finally found a home, a person who is as close to family as she’ll ever find, and an organization she can put her loyalty behind. As well as her considerable skill set. But when her boss turns all of his attention to smuggling humans and the immense profits that could be made, there is no way Joan can let that stand. And the mystery man Joan is sent to hunt down is turning into the most interesting man she’s ever met.
Faced with the choice of murdering the man she is beginning to love or saving the one person who is like family to her, will Joan be able to do the right thing? Especially when the right thing is no longer clear?
Joan: Portrait of a Vengeful Young Woman is an action-packed thriller in The Fixer series of books. Fans of Beatrix Rose, Jet, and any other hard-nosed, ass-kicking female main character will enjoy riding along with Joan.

Rex Carpenter was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. An English teacher, he loves snowboarding, hiking, mountain biking, reading, watching good television as well as both good and bad movies and spending time with his wife and daughter . They currently live in Asia with a never -ending succession of guppy fish that Rex cannot manage to keep alive for more than a month.

That's the standard bio from the back of the book and honestly, it does a fairly good job of giving a broad picture.

Oh, you want details?

Well...sit back and relax. It all started whe- what? Not that many details? Oh, ok. Let's start again.

Short version: Always wanted to write. Language Arts classes were the best in school. Pursued English Literature in unversity. Gave a half-hearted attempt at writing in Hollywood. Ended up loving teaching more than anything. But still, there was a little itch in the back of my mind. Just a feeling that I had a story to tell.

Finally sat down and gave it a shot November of 2013. Took about three months to publish the first episode but there was a huge learning curve. I'm always trying to speed things up. I'm lucky enough to have a few readers who really like what I put out. But they're a demanding lot. Always asking for stories faster. Telling me which characters they want to see spun-off into their own unique series. I love my readers.

I hope you'll give my little stories a chance. I'm doing my best to write and improve as fast as I can. Thank you.

After reading the Fixer, Season 1 I found the origin stories of the Duke and Joan characters as part of an origins set. I found the story of Duke quite enjoyable, so I continued with the back story of Joan. It many ways this tory was better than the Duke story. I was surprised Carpenter was able to tap into Joan's and Louise personalities as well as he did. Of course, this story is filled with the action this series is known for, but the two female characters showed more sensitivity than I expected. As with the Duke story, reading this book isn't required to read the other Fixer stories. It is an enjoyable book. I'm looking for more light reading as I go into a busier work period for the next eight weeks. The Fixer series will fill whatever free hours I have.

This a character spin off from the Fixer series.

I have read all the authors books. His last book was Duke, another character spinoff from the series and I felt was his best one until I read this book. He just keeps getting better and better.

Joan is the no nonsense, and very deadly heroine of The Fixer series. In this book we get all the back story of who and how Joan came to be. We learn about her child hood and the lost she suffered at a young age that deeply affected her. We learn about her father, a strong man, willing to do anything to protect his daughter.

We get to witness Joan's path through her first love. The betrayal of that love has deadly consequences turning Joan into a force of vengeance, and sets in motion her path of death and destruction. Trying to keep your moral compass straight while doing bad things can be a struggle.

We get to see Joan reinvent herself, or attempt to, with the ill-gotten gains from the spoils of war. Joan makes a connection that will last for years to come with a friend, teacher, and confident. Someone that had a dark past as well. It's a period when Joan learns to not only fight but enjoy it and become a last ditch hope for those that need help and nowhere to turn.

A confrontation ends that part of her life and propels her into a life of an assassin for hire until she’s forced to choose between a family of sorts and a line that she's not willing to cross. It's at this time, her darkest time, that she's given an assignment the will again change her life dramatically.

It's not a requirement to read The Fixer series first and I might even suggest reading this first to have a better understanding of Joan.
