Maybe she shouldn’t have answered the phone… Brandy Alexander never set out to be solving crimes. Just because meeting her new boyfriend, Jiff Heinkel, had once thrust her into one, that’s no reason why she should be the first phone call made when her friend discovers a dead body at her new Bed & Breakfast. Especially when offering Julia help will throw Brandy right back together with her ex – Police Detective Dante Deedler.
Maybe she should have just said no… Likewise, the last thing Brandy needs while searching for the truth behind what happened at the B & B is to find herself Maid of Honor in a great big Italian Wedding. But how can she say no when the mother she always manages to disappoint is saying yes. Now she’s squeezing fittings for unflattering dresses in with investigating and questioning people who knew the victim.
Maybe she can get through this and keep her sanity… But, keeping the two men who both seem to want something from her away from each other while helping her very guilty looking friend and the kooky B&B staff, has her craving nothing more than a table for one and a whole King Cake.
There’s no place like New Orleans to have a good crime.
I was born, raised, and still live in New Orleans. I started going to parades and watched them from sitting on my Dad's shoulders before I could walk. I've been in Girl Scout parades, high school parades, St. Patrick's parades, Mardi Gras parades, on dance teams in parades and just about any loosely organized group who deemed it necessary to parade. I just can't help myself. I love parades. I attended Loyola of the South here in New Orleans so I wouldn't be far from a parade.
I spent 20+ years working for and retired from AT&T. I have worked and lived in New York City, Madison, New Jersey, Atlanta, Georgia and Birmingham, Alabama returning home for the big parade every year--Mardi Gras.
Before Katrina, I moved away and back three times, four if you count rebuilding the same house at the same address after Katrina flooded my home. I did miss a couple of parades that year.
I'm an avid sailor and Scuba diver for many years, and made lasting friendships from sailing and dive trips. I love travel and if the opportunity presents itself, I'm there. Except for a brief stint where I had to own and learn how to ride a motorcycle, I've been a water baby. When I am not enjoying fun with friends in all New Orleans has to offer- sailing and racing with friends on Lake Pontchartrain, Mardi Gras, parties and festivals- I head to Florida.
I am an ardent animal lover and direct an all volunteer rescue group, Schnauzer Rescue of Louisiana. I love to write and I write about what I know and love! You can take the girl out of New Orleans, but it won’t be for long!
Dead & Breakfast, the second book in my series THE NEW ORLEANS GO CUP CHRONICLES placed in two categories in the 2014 SOLA Chapter of RWA's Dixie Kane contest for Short/Long Series for Contemporary fiction and for Single Title Contemporary fiction. My first book is RESCUED BY A KISS.
The third book in the series, Drive-Thru Murder is scheduled to be released in the fall 2016.
There's no place like New Orleans to have a good crime!
The wonderful characters and quirky situations had me laughing out loud while I wracked my brain trying to solve the murder mystery. OK, I failed to solve it. There is a section of the book about a big Italian wedding that had me cracking up and I loved all the references to New Orleans life and culture. I am not from there so I cannot verify the local information or accents, but I thoroughly enjoyed the romp. There is the ditsy owner of the B&B who could not resist a roll between the sheets with Guitarzan the lead guitarist in the band and the metro-sexual ex-con she hires who (he or she?) turns out to be a great seamstress. And the lead character has two hunky men that she is stringing along because she cannot make up her mind on which one to fall for. That is messy enough but add a murder and other shady situations and you have the perfect cozy mystery! I heard the audio version and I loved the narrator too.
A nice cozy mystery with a romantic twist, the storyline is intriguing with great characters that brought the book to life. My only misgiving is Brandy, she is an okay investigator with too much emotional baggage. If she doesn't step up to the plate she is going to lead herself straight into a love triangle which isn’t good for any of the guys or even herself. Julia’s night of fun with her client turn into one she cannot remember and a nightmare, when he was found murder in his room, the same room she spent the night, in her own Bed and Breakfast business, now what would be the odds of that. She was in a whole heap of trouble and the number one suspect.
This is your typical cozy mystery. It is definitely worth taking the time to curl up with. There is nothing earth shattering about this book. Just a nice pleasant way to kill some time.
I enjoyed this book. This is book two in the series and I enjoyed it just as much as I did the first book. The stories 're stand alone books, so you don't need to listen to them in order but I think it helps if you do. I like the bright and colourful characters and the author describes it so well that it is easy to picture walk down the streets of New Orleans or at least attending a wedding there. The mystery was good, which kept you guessing and the wedding plans and event added a light humours element to the book. I can't wait to start the next book. Brandy gets a panicked phone call from her best friend Julia, on the day her new bed and breakfast establishment is to open she wakes up to find her first guest dead in bed. He was murdered and Julia's dress covered in blood is found in a near by dumpster. Julia has no idea what went on the previous night and as the police keep catching her in lies or half truths she quickly becomes the prime suspect. Brandy knows her best friend didn't kill him but each time Julia opens her mouth She incriminate herself even more. If only Brandy could find a way to get out of being the maid of honour at an old Scholl friends wedding, so she could spend more time investigating. At least the dress the bride choose for the bridesmaids to wear should bring Julia out of funk and constant worry of being arrested. The dead man had his own problems and should be providing the police with plenty of suspects but when it is found out his girlfriend goes missing the same night he dies the best lead seems to have vanished leaving Julia to face the rap. Can Brandy clear her name or will having her boyfriend met her parents for the first time cause to much of a distraction? And what about her ex boyfriend the cop in charge of arresting Julia? Is there still some sparks left in that relationship? I liked the narrator and thought she did a good job with the voices and accents needed in the story.
I started this series on a whim because of an online book discussion about Mardi Gras and I am from New Orleans. I figured I would just read book one and call it a day. Well here I am now finishing book 2 and can't wait to start the third. These are really fun quick reads and even though I have other things I need to read, I can't help but want to binge this series.
I really love the elements of New Orleans captured by Ms. Mooney. For me, some of it is redundant, because I am very familiar with the area; however, its perfect to give someone the feel of the land. I am not a huge fan of too much romance and I do not care for love triangles and this was a big part of book 2. There are a few scenes and references in this book that I think just may cross or come very close to crossing the line to be considered a "cozy" mystery. With that being said, it has not stopped me from wanting to continue on with the series.
In book 2, Julia and her promiscuity get tangled up in a murder investigation. With the help of Brandy and her new friend Jiff, she is trying to clear her name. Brandy can't seem to move on from Dante and since he is the lead officer handling the case, he is not making it easy for her. Throw in a big, fat, New Orleans Italian wedding and you have a wild time. The police do not seem to be looking at other suspects besides Julia and it looks like someone may be out to get Brandy. Can Brandy help clear her best friend's name before she becomes the next victim?
This is book two in the series, The New Orleans Go Cup Chronicles, and the first I have listened to or read. I have seen it listed as a cozy mystery but I would not place it there due to a few steamy scenes. Other than those scenes, the book did follow the cozy format.
The narrator did a wonderful job.
I really feel for Brandy in respect to the wedding preparations. I can totally sympathize with her on hideous dresses, headgear, and dyed shoes. I have never understood why bridesmaids are expected to spend lavishly on outfits that are ugly (or at least not to their liking) and will probably never be worn again.
The murder in question is of a band member staying at Julia’s B & B. Julia is the number one suspect. Who is Violet- were is she, did she commit the murder? If not, then why can’t she be found?
I’m not a fan of love triangles and I can see the situation between Brandy, Jiff, and Dante going in that direction. I can only hope it does not drag on through too many books or I will begin to resent Brandy for leading them on. I can understand her needing time to figure out who she is interested in seeing and getting to know in a romantic sense.
I would recommend this romp through New Orleans and the catholic Irish Channel district.
Brandy Alexander is trying very hard to support her friend Julia's new bed-and-breakfast enterprise -- but it becomes more difficult when a guest turns up dead in the bed he just shared with Julia, and all of the evidence points to the proprietress!
Of course, Brandy is now running into her on-again/off-again police officer boyfriend, Dante ... while still trying to work out her relationship with hunky Jiff (honestly, I think he's kind of a phony ... and we'll see how that plays out over the series).
Brandy is doing her best to investigate and exonerate her friend ... and then she gets roped in to being part of her cousin's wedding party, creating even more problems -- because she has to stand up next to groomsman Dante while wearing a horrible antebellum dress. And how is her date, Jiff, going to like that?
Well, all of these elements make for a cute cozy mystery. Set the tale in New Orleans, and you'll definitely keep my attention. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series.
Let me start by saying that I listened to the audiobook version of this story. This is the second book in the Go-Cup series but could be read as a stand-a-lone as the is enough background mentioned to let readers in but I definitely recommend starting with the first one as main characters and relationship sorry carries over to this story. In this story, Brandy Alexander (main character) is called to her best 's bed and breakfast hotel because of a dead guy. Her friend is accused and Brandi goes about trying to clear her friends name along with her childhood friend and cop, Dante. The author has created quirky characters that I find likable. Having grown up in the New Orleans area, I enjoy hearing about locations that I know and it is obvious that the author knows the area and culture of the city which adds credibility. The narrator is great at making distinct voices for each character and bringing their unique personalities to life. I look forward to the next in the series.
It starts with a murder on the first day a new inn opens. The body is found half off a broken bed with panties swinging from a chandelier. It doesn't look good for stripper turned hotelier Julia. Brandy takes charge. First she makes coffee then she calls the police. I like her priorities. While trying to prove her best friend's innocence Brandy finds herself in a friend's wedding. A Big Pouffy Italian Wedding. As the maid of honor with her ex as best man. Just as she has begun a new relationship. The description of the dress is worth reading the book for, as is this description. I was given a free copy of this audiobook. I have not read the first book in the series but I want to. I thoroughly enjoyed this rather comical cozy mystery. It was well done. I only had a slight problem with the reader. She sometimes paused at the wrong place which interrupted the throw somewhat but not enough to ruin it. She sounded like Brandy Alexander.
This is the first time that I've read a book on my Kindle at home while listening to that same work on Audiobook in the car. It was an easy transition. I highly suggest the experience. Get this book in both formats!
What is a best friend for but to help you hide a dead body - or in this case, help the heroine make better decisions? It's a bed and breakfast recipe for disaster as the detective who comes to weed through the clues is also an ex- and very cute indeed!
This cozy mystery was like a peek behind the New Orleans doors during graden week. Having read the author's bio, I feel sure that I got a true taste of what's cooking down in New Orleans and it's a hoot! Grab your copy on Audio and Kindle and get ready for a spicy gumbo of a mystery.
Wow! Fantastic book Loved, loved it! A great plot, keeps you guessing the whole time til the end! Brandy is caught between two men she loves, and her best friend is framed for murder. As they work to clear her, the heat builds up between Brandy, Jiff and Dante who will she chose? She can't decide! There are lots of twists and turns, lots of drama, lots of fun, lots of excitement. Everyone who has ever had to wear ugly bridesmaids dresses, can relate. However these take the cake, UGLY!!! This story feels so real you feel like you are part of it. Now I have to read the next book to see who she choses and what happens next! Great series!
When one of her first bed and breakfast customers winds up dead in his room and Julia is the prime suspect, Brandy swings into investigative mode, while juggling the attentions of a hot lawyer and the cop next door and preparing to be the maid of honour at a huge neighbourhood Italian wedding in this very funny suspense story. I love Brandy's frank, honest and genuinely funny outlook on life, even when she's in the midst of her friend's murder investigation and the insanity of picking bridesmaid's dresses for 17 attendants. This one's a great story and stands well alone, or as a follow up to the first story which introduces many of the characters. Great entertainment.
Brandy Alexander is roped into being Maid-of-Honor for what is undoubtedly the largest Italian-Catholic wedding in New Orleans history with definitely the ugliest bridesmaid dresses ever. In the middle of the preparations her friend Julia is the prime suspect for a murder and Brandy needs to keep her ex-boyfriend, Detective Dante Deedler, and her new boyfriend, Jiff, apart long enough to solve the case.
There was lots of suspense and a surprise ending which made for a fun read. Frank and Julia are crazy characters and I’m curious to see how Brandy’s relationship with Jiff is going to go. The story has a good solid mystery plot. I finished the book in one day.
It was never Brandy Alexander's intention to solve crimes but what could she say to a friend who just found a dead body at her bed and breakfast and wanted Brandy's help? Of course she'll help even though it means interacting with the detective who just happens to be her ex-boyfriend. Juggling her time between fittings for a bridesmaid dress and asking people who knew the victim leaves Brandy wishing for time by herself. Who was the victim? why was he killed? does her friend know more than she's letting on? You won't be able to stop turning the pages to find the answers! Wonderful unique characters and a well written mystery. Definitely recommend!
When Brandy Alexander receives a frantic call from her friend Julia, she finds herself in the middle of helping prove that her friend didn't murder her first customer at her new bed and breakfast. A cozy mystery wouldn't be without a little romance and Brandy found herself in the middle of a love too. She had a police officer, that she grew up next door to and a lawyer, who she got to represent her friend vying for her love. I can't forget the big wedding - not hers. Won't say anymore, don't want any spoilers.
Dead and Breakfast is the second book of the Rescued by a Kiss series. Nice little follow up. I was wondering where the author was going to take the storyline after such a dramatic first book. Not to disappoint that she came full circle right back to the detective. Jiff sounds too good to be true, so is he? I was hoping the author would answer that question but she didn’t. The murder mystery was well done kept me guessing until close to the end. So I really want to read the next book to find out what’s going to happen!!
Brandy Alexander receives a call early in the morning from her friend Julia who needs immediate help. Julia wants Brandy at her new B&B ASAP. A good friend, Brandy arrives to discover Julia is in one of her rented rooms, covered in blood with a dead man and Julia doesn’t remember what happened. Brandy, hires her new lawyer boyfriend to help Julia while her ex boyfriend Detective Dante works to put Julia behind bars. Can Brandy figure out who murdered this man before Julia goes to jail forever?
A fun read. I enjoyed it and look forward to seeing what happens with the love triangle
This book is a must read for all who love murder mysteries and love triangles. It starts with a rugged man dying in a bed and breakfast, with the usual suspect the owner of the B&B. Then comes the the disappearance of the dead man's "girlfriend" , whose relationship only loves in the mind of her family. Drugs and a family wedding only increase the tension for those involved but suddenly everything plays out.
This entry is better than the first; it reads as a cozy mystery, the tidbits about New Orleans customs are charming, the investigation is interesting, the unmasking of the criminal provides some excitement, and more of the characters are becoming likeable. Unfortunately, two of the three main characters are behaving rather unattractively, but I'm pleased I gave this series a chance and that the undertone of arrogance is absent this time.
Brandy Alexander is called to a bed and breakfast, where her friend, Julia, wakes up next to a dead body. All evidence points to Julia being the prime suspect. While being pursued romantically by two men, Brandy, along with those two men, try to clear Julia. Interesting characters with a good story. I give it 2 1/2 stars.
Julia’s first customer at her hotel is good looking and asks her to go out with him. Things go bad from there. She calls her friend and they both are under suspicion. Add to that a 40 party wedding, stalkers and drugs, and this book doesn’t disappoint. Great characters and scenes. I can’t wait for another book from this author!
A rather ridiculous story but not too bad. I have no desire to read the other ones but this was good enough to pass an hour or so. Lots of description of New Orleans, but does not give the best of the town. The Julie Smith books are much more pleasant New Orleans descriptions.
Brandy Alexander’s best friend has opened a Bed and Breakfast. On the morning after her first check in, Julia calls to say there’s a dead body in one of her rooms. Here we go again. Can Brandy and Jiff keep her out of prison? Recommend Series.
Brandy has two handsome men who want to date her...And her best friend, Julia, is suspected of murder after she wakes up with a dead man in her bed. Will Jiff manage to keep her out of jail before Dante arrests her? Or can Brandy prove who actually killed him?
Sleuthing New Orleans style A young woman is having trouble choosing which man she would rather be with...a cop she's known all her life and both of their families are sure they will marry, or an attorney she recently met who is making her feel like a Princess. Decisions...decisions. What's a girl to do? To top it all off her friend has been accused of murder...again! A real page turner!
Brandy is now juggling Jiff and Dante, since Dante finally admitted to loving her. Her friend , Julia, opened a B& B in an old funeral home, first guest is violently murdered, Julia is accused of this so you are now ready for all the fun that follows! Another wild, convoluted, hilarious investigation occurs!
My first book by this author, found it very entertaining, loved the characters, and the storyline was great. Going to purchase all books now in this series... awesome.
This was actually one of the best cozy mysteries that in a long time. I absolutely loved the characters and the story was much better than usual cozy. This one I highly recommend.
Brandy's friend Julia is framed for a murder she did not commit. Brandy is determined to help prove Julia's innocence while juggling two men and preparing for the biggest Italian wedding in town. Fun, light read.
I really liked the character of Brandy Alexander. Can’t wait to read more of her adventures. Dante & Jiff complicate matters & provide an interesting storyline.
