Jona and his twin sister possess the skill to become Mystics, magic users with the ability to control the elements. Four years later, all three have completed their schooling and moved on to their professions, distinguishing themselves through valor and talent.

When Jona’s sister, Jenna, is found to possess the ability to control a new form of Mysticism, she is kidnapped by the land’s most nefarious Mystic. Aidan and Jona join forces in a rescue attempt which sets them in the middle of a war between their home nation and its greatest rival. Readers’ Comments
‘I liked the map at the front although it was very Lord of the Rings and did not feel original. The story is interesting and there’s plenty happening. The characters and setting are well described although the author tends to put the description in large blocks; I find it much better when description is sprinkled in amongst the plot.’ Female reader.
‘I can’t decide if I liked the cover. It was very forceful and eye-catching but it had a modern feel to it that didn’t fit the story. I think it was the font on the title. Anyway, fab story with plenty of fighting and intrigue. I enjoyed it. I think it would go down well as a YA book.’ Male reader, aged 45
‘The author crafted a fascinating fantasy world, populated it with pretty cool characters and designed a complex plot. It’s not super-original but I think most fantasy fans would pick it up and enjoy it. Good ending which sets up well for the sequel.’ Male reader (editor) aged 52
‘Simply written with a twisty plot. Everything’s there for the fantasy nut to enjoy. Characters need to develop in book two. Oh, and try not to chunk too much description together.’ Male reader (publisher), aged 40

‘A twisting and turning fantasy adventure.’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards

I have just finished this book and I have overall enjoyed the story. I felt the story was engaging and easy to read, each chapter was enjoyable and I looked forward to seeing what happened next. I felt the character development for the protagonist and his two friends was descent and I did identify with these character through the story although at times the development seems rushed to me.

Overall I would recommend this book to any fans of this genre, I think it is a really nice change of story setting, which is difficult to do in the fantasy area. I look forward to what Kristopher has in store for the further adventures of Aiden and his comrades.

It is difficult to come up with new plot devices and plot lines in the fantasy genre. However, Kristofer Hanson was able to do just that. Plus, the plot was not predictable, as is so often the case these days. I also found the book to be very readable.
