Is there such a thing as a cool geek? If so, Spock must be one. As a snowboard instructor for White Cairns Ski School, he definitely looks the part. But even geeks need love, and Spock's heart has been captured by a warrior princess he's met online.
As the ski season in Scotland nears its end, Spock's plans to meet with EvenStar are thwarted by unsavoury characters and unlucky circumstances. He'll need to be as bold and brave as his chivalrous internet persona and use all of his ingenuity and talent to win the day — and win the woman of his dreams.
USA Today bestselling author Roz Marshall pens romantic women's fiction, contemporary fantasy, and clean small-town romance. She loves writing uplifting stories set in her native Scotland, with strong heroines and page-turning plot lines.
A software engineer turned ski instructor turned author, she spends her spare time on horseback exploring the glorious Scottish countryside, or with her hubby and their talkative cat and squirrel-obsessed Jack Russell :-)
This is a spectacular end to what has been a delightful character-driven series.
I'm really sad to see the end of it, and I can't but hope and cross my fingers that Ms Marshall will allow us a glimpse back on how these characters are doing in the future!
I'm not going to say much more on the matter here -- you'll see what I've thought of the previous instalments in other reviews -- but really, if you're coming across this for the first time, skip straight back to episode 1 and get stuck in. You won't regret it.
A real winter warmer, with a fitting ending for many of the characters we've come to know and love!
I absolutely adore this series. I know absolutely nothing about skiing, have never been and probably won't even though it sounds like it could be fun. We have followed this group of ski instructors through the good and the bad. I am so happy for Jude and hope we get to hear a little bit more about her new life. (Maybe Allan will have an accident of his own). The author did an amazing job letting us into each characters life a little bit at a time so you can grow and develop with them.
I purchased Weathering the Storm by Roz Marshall and this review was given freely. This short story takes place at the same time as Snow blind but from the perspective of Simon and Mike. Foreshadowing and Irony play a heavy part in this edition of Secrets in the Snow. Things heat up for gamer/avid nature photographer/snowboarder Spock aka Simon, Mike is conflicted about telling Jude what he saw in New Zealand, and Jude's family and the ski school fall apart as Allan resumes his domineering ways. This is an action packed and highly descriptive book with multiple happy ending.
Another author 'review' which I hope might be helpful.
This is the last - and longest - book in the Secrets in the Snow series, and it was one of the hardest to write. As well as telling the story of Spock, the unlucky geeky snowboard instructor, I also had to finish off Jude's story, reveal answers to the character secrets that I introduced in previous episodes, and yet try and make it an exciting and fulfilling story.
Spock was fun to write, though. It was interesting to try and get into his head, and think about why he'd do what he does and say what he says (or doesn't say). He starts out as a (virtual) hero, and I hope you'll agree that he ends up as a bit of a hero too.
The overall story arc of reluctant ski school manager Jude, which started in book 1, Winter Arrives, also concludes in this episode, and I think she ends up as a real heroine. I'm certainly proud of her! Isn't it strange how fictional characters can become so real to us we can talk about them like they're friends?
But this episode, Weathering the Storm, is the last time we'll meet our friends of the Secrets in the Snow series. Or at least, season 1 of the series... If there's enough demand, I may consider a season 2. But for now, the snow is melting and our characters are off to do -- whatever it is ski instructors do in the summer...!
Thank-you for reading this far, and I hope you enjoy this story!
A satisfying end to a great series, Weathering the Storm brings a culmination to the crisis that faces Jude and highlights the fact that there is someone for everyone in this world, even the geeks who live on the fringes of the general population. Spock is the hero of the piece and despite his personal losses, he saves the day and helps Jude to cement her decision regarding the White Cairns Ski School. It seems that everyone has secrets of one kind or another, and as they surface in the eye of a fierce winter storm, resolutions are made and the future is bright. I had one disastrous experience of skiing in my youth and vowed never to put a pair on skis on again. However, so many memories came back with this series, and I could see and feel every experience, including trudging through a storm. I received a free copy of this book from the author and this is my honest and voluntary review.
