She helped him build an empire. He made the mistake of thinking that meant she couldn’t build one without him.
For fifteen years, Braelin Sterling has been the woman behind Malcolm Sterling’s success. Before the Calabasas mansion, private chefs, Black Cards, luxury cars, and multimillion-dollar deals, there was a tiny Long Beach apartment, cheap takeout, and a dream they built together. Braelin sacrificed, strategized, raised their children, and helped turn Malcolm’s ambition into an empire.
She thought they were partners.
Malcolm thought providing a beautiful life meant he could make his own rules.
Then one person changes everything.
Braelin doesn’t scream. She doesn’t beg. She doesn’t fight another woman over a man who already made his choice. She gets quiet. She gets smart. And when she finally walks away, she discovers something Malcolm never
The woman who helped build his empire knows exactly how to build her own.
Now Braelin is entering a world where her money is hers, her passport stays stamped, her peace comes first, and men are no longer the center of her life. Dating is different when you aren’t searching for a husband. Freedom is different when you’ve spent all them years being somebody’s wife. And love gets complicated when a woman who has finally learned to choose herself meets a man who wants more than she’s willing to give.
Malcolm Sterling thought losing Braelin would teach her how much she needed him.
Instead, it teaches him just how dangerous a woman can become when she realizes she was the prize the entire time.
That was a lot 😅 This story was thought-provoking and attention-grabbing. I did find the pacing a little slow in the beginning at times. However, I can appreciate how that slower moments helped build the story and lead us where we needed to go.
The writing was beautiful. The author conveyed the characters emotions and inner thoughts in a way that allowed us to feel what they were experiencing without telling us how we should feel. Some of those moments were genuinely heart-clenching.
We got to witness the destruction of a marriage, the fallout affecting a family and a successful company, and the difficult journey of trying to rebuild yourself after experiencing betrayal in the worst way. Honestly, her becoming a boss was the least of my concerns because, girl, I felt like she needed therapy after all that! 😂
I did find her bitter at times, and I know that word carries a negative connotation, but let’s be real. When you experience something that traumatic, of course it’s going to change you. Being bitter doesn’t necessarily mean you’re miserable. Sometimes, it means you’re hurt, angry, and trying to protect yourself from ever experiencing that kind of pain again. Her transformation into a maneater was a defense mechanism shaped by what she endured with her husband and men who think and act like him.
I was invested in her romantic journey, but I understood where she was coming from. She knew she wasn’t healed, and getting involved with someone new could have caused more hurt because she wasn’t in the right place emotionally. She had too much healing to do.
Overall, this was a good story that gave me a lot to think about. It explored the destruction that betrayal can leave behind and what it takes to find yourself again after everything you thought you knew about your life falls apart.
I think we have all been Braelin at certain parts of her or our lives. I’ve been through her struggle and now that I’m on the other side I have regrets. I regret letting the good man walk away. Now that my son is grown and I’m alone I regret so much. Work and kids can only take you so far. All I can wish for is that a good man finds his way to me again. No a man isn’t everything but when it’s all said and done I now see value in a good companion. I hope she gets the therapy that she truly needs because the fear that lives in her isn’t healthy. Hopefully one day we can get an update on her journey.
As far as Malcolm, lmao. As my momma would say, you never miss your well until your water runs dry.
This book was good, it was just unnecessarily long. It was repetitive in a lot of ways. She was having the same conversations over and over and over. And I hate to say it, but she was absolutely letting her past with Malcolm control her dating life to her detriment. Anyway, I'm glad she never thought twice about having luxurious adventures with her kids. Lol
