A chance encounter with a tabloid playboy lands a scrappy waif a place in high society.
Fainting in the notorious nobleman’s arms is the smartest move the self-proclaimed spazz ever made. Now her picture decorates every gossip rag in Britain and the public wants to know who the Devil Duke’s new squeeze is. Offered a sizable sum, Izzy De Luca travels to England where she will pose as the Duke of Devoy’s new bride. It seems the rake’s reputation needs some rehabilitation and the fresh-faced orphan is just the girl to brighten his tarnished image.
Izzy enters a lavish world of wealth and privilege, but soon realizes her uptight employer is no laid-back lady charmer. Sparks fly between the two when the spirited American lets the impossibly handsome blue blood know she won’t be gentrified without a fight.
As they play out the carefully constructed charade, the jaded Duke finds himself drawn to Izzy’s rare brand of charm and what begins as a collision of worlds ends in a union of love. This may be a modern day Cinderella story, but this feisty commoner is no simpering sweetheart. She means to give our titled hero a run for his millions.
Tessa Bowen inspired daily by her beautiful surroundings and enjoys nothing more than crafting fast-paced dialogue-driven love stories with unusual characters and heaps of sizzle. When she is not dreaming up new ways to build tension in her tales, she is jogging in the vineyards or cooking out of her garden.
Tessa is currently working on fleshing out all of her series but is never too busy to hear from her fans.
Devil Duke by Tessa Bowen is the first book in the Demon Duchess series. I had fun reading this title. There was many laugh aloud moments. Despite, the story was not without its issues. I will share issues, however, before I go there I will share what I liked about the book.
What I Like
Story
I am a fan of Cinderella type stories, so Devil Duke was right up my alley. The trope may be common, but the story itself was refreshing. It involved a business marriage between a commoner and a Duke. The aim was to clean up the Duke’s image for the public eye and to preserve his daughter’s impression of him.
You are probably wondering what is wrong with his image. Well, for starters monogamy was not a word you would associate with him. He loves women and was not afraid to show it, hence the need to clean up his image.
Characters
Trevor is known as the devil duke, because of his habit of not sticking to one woman. Initially, he appeared snobbish, obnoxious and arrogant. I was prepared to dislike him, however, by the end of the story, my feelings towards him changed. Despite living a privileged life, he had no clue what love felt like. Learning of his past allowed me to understand why he behaved in such a fashion. However, beneath that facade laid a generous and caring heart.
Izzy is not one would consider royalty material, however when she fainted in the arms of the devil she became the darling of Britain. This made her a likely candidate to become the future wife of the Devil Duke.
Izzy proved to be a real spitfire. I loved how she stood up to the Duke on their second encounter. That scene had me laughing so hard I teared up. The Devil Duke never knew what hit him. She brought chaos to his life, but in a good way.
She grew up in a foster home and had to learn from an early age the meaning of survival.
I loved how she did not allow the glitz and glamour of royal life sway her. She remained true to herself. She is one of those characters you cannot help but fall in love with. She won everyone over with her effervescence.
Romance
I loved Izzy and Trevor together. They were exactly what each other needed. She brought out his protective side and made him laugh. There were several times, however, where her actions drove him crazy to the point of anger. Those scenes were the ones that had me laughing aloud. OMG, it was so funny.
What I did not like
I enjoyed the dialogue, but I was not thrilled with the usage of few phrases by Izzy. I believed it was over the top. Every time she speaks the word frigging, weirdo pervert and spazz is mentioned. I know she is young (20 years old) but it was definitely too much. I cringed every time she spoke; because I knew those words were not far behind.
Conclusion/Recommendation
Overall, Devil Duke was a fun read, which kept me entertained from start to finish.
I love this quirky and funny story. I always like a story with an unorthodox dynamic couple. You never know what may come from the couple. It was hysterical theme throughout the story. I couldn't stop laughing. All that zestful batter was working up for monumental climax. The narration was awesome.
Audio book review Book 1 in the series. Its a Royal story but in modern times , a modern fairytale, where a commoner finds her prince . Tessa throws in a few twists and turns and a story with true love , even though the Hero and Heroine didn’t know they were meant to be together
Hero is Trevor. Heroine is Izzy . You know it’s true love when Izzy turns Trevor’s life around . Trevor was just roaming in life with no purpose until he meets Izzy . Trevor was a ladies man always changing Ladies. He got bored with them . Trevor and Izzy became the Darlings of Britain and Izzy in the spotlight when she fainted and Trevor the Duke saved her . Trevor asked her to change his reputation . First his image with the ladies , he’s Divorced with a child .
Right from the beginning this story started off interesting. The leading lady was lively and interesting. She was spunky and I loved how she gave the Duke a run for his money. The Duke had one of those personalities that as was off putting but in that way where you're just waiting to see the good side of him. You know it's in him, you know just have to wait. But as I waited I got this highly entertaining story that was funny and so well told by narrator Virginia Ferguson. Her British accent seemed really well suited for the story. It seemed like the perfect fit. I think the only thing that occasionally threw me was that sometimes I think the accent slipped a bit when she was switching between the third person pov and voicing Izzy's American voice. But it wasn't anything that could make you dislike her narration at all. I definitely liked her.
Overall this was a good introduction to this author for me and I look forward to more books by her.
This is the first book that I have read by this author and I found the characters to be delightful. Watching the Devil Duke fall in love with a sweet and innocent American was a refreshing twist on the Cinderella story.
The Devil Duke by Tessa Bowen is a modern day fairytale romance about a young American girl who is offered a sizable sum to marry a Duke to repair his reputation. I listened to this book on audio Narrated by Virginia Ferguson. Virginia Ferguson did a great job narrating with the different voices she used for the characters. However, it did take me a bit to get used to the voice she uses for Izzy because she is supposed to be in her 20's but sounds more like a 13 year old girl. This is the first book of Tessa Bowen's that I have read and look forward to reading more of her books in the future. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes the modern day fairytale romances.
DNF 23%. This book falls under my 'get out of snark free' policy being it appears to be the first book for the author. I couldn't enjoy the book with the heroine's horrible use of the English language. The word 'friggen' is used at least once a page, and got old way too quickly. The groundwork is there for a good story, but it needs a lot of polish.
I received a free audiobook version of this story for an honest review.
This story had a lot of potential; I really wanted to love it. I've read plenty of stories in which the male and female lead don't get along for whatever reason but, eventually, they fall in love. I just couldn't get past Jack/John; he annoyed me to no end. I found him to be arrogant, nasty, full of himself, any other negative adjective you can think of, insert here. I was hoping that once the baby was born, he would be a little nicer to Abigail, but he wasn't. Well...I made it to where I had four hours left, so I'm sure their relationship ended up turning positive (no clue how) during that time. This meant I listened to close to seven hours of Jake/John being mean to Abigail. Either way, I couldn't stand him. It's one thing to not like someone, it's another story to still go ahead and have sex with them (it's not like he couldn't have pushed her away, but then there'd be no story). Plus, I'm all for sarcasm, but he overdid it so that it wasn't even funny. He was just a total douche the whole time I listened.
The narrator did a beautiful job though. I loved her voice and accent. Her American male accent was surprising given how soft-spoken and elegant her natural voice sounded.
Questions/Comments:
Who would suck the blood off someone else's finger? Seriously? It's not like Abigail and Jack/John were close. When this situation happened, that had been their first interaction together. It would have been one thing for him to wipe the blood off, but sucking it? No...just no.
While Jake/John was good looking and rich, I didn't feel like he had anything really going for him. He was an ass. For example, even after finding out a woman is pregnant with your child, knowing that you want to be involved in said child's life, you leave and don't bother to check in with her. God forbid, something bad happened during the pregnancy. And what does Jack/John do? He shows back up two weeks before her due date and is still an ass to her. Yet, Abigail seems to fall in love with him more, each time he comes back. I didn't that get at all! Whenever they're thinking about the other, it was all (the majority of the time) relating to their looks, how attractive they were, how they wanted to have sex with the other.
Jake/John's issue with Abigail's friend/lover, Trevor, was annoying also. Yes, he was possessive and admitted that to Abigail and doesn't like her around Trevor, for some unknown reason given he doesn't want her either... Yet, the many times Abigail brings up the fact she has known Trevor since they were kids, meaning he still means a lot to her whether they're together or not, Jake/John had a hissy fit because he didn't want to hear about it or him...it just confused me. What did he want?
Jake/John's technique when trying to get Abigail to do something was to demean her. He'd talk down to her all the time...yet even though he made her cry on multiple occasions, she kept going back for more. Can anyone say abusive relationship here? There's no way in hell they would ever have a good relationship. If anything, they would just be cordial towards one another for their daughter's sake.

The Devil Duke is the name given to an English gentleman who is notorious for the number of women he dates. He can't go anywhere, not even to America, without the paparazzi following him. They get a picture of him just as a cute little urchin trips and falls into his arms. Not a good look when it hits the front page of a tabloid. Izzy De Luca is the woman in his arms and a story to explain this to the British people is hatched. She will be paid a hefty sum to act as his new bride with hopes of rehabilitating his image. She finally relents, but is not overly happy to try to fit into the world of wealth and privilege, when she grew up as an orphan. She surprises the Duke with her quirky behavior, attitude and language. When she uses street language and particularly odd phrases, it sends him out of his mind. I had to laugh that she purposely goaded him with her light-hearted, unstuffy behavior. His daughter, Charlotte, comes alive with Izzy. For the first time in a long time, she laughs with joy and they have imaginative fun with each other. It is a sweet and hysterical story of turning lives on end and upsetting the norm. As with most fairytales, there must be a horrid stepmother. Trevor's past is filled with women and one in particular has always been there. Abigail isn't going to give up without a fight because he is supposed to be hers and she will find a way to break them up. Trevor comes to realize that Izzy is changing his life in more ways than one and he wants her to be with him always. He's going to have to change from a devil duke into a monogamous man if he intends to capture Izzy's heart. Izzy makes him earn a happy ending and she made me smile with the stipulations she set forth. An endearing story! Virginia Ferguson is one of my favorite narrators and she did a great job with this story. Her British accent fits all her characters and the voices she uses for each are admirable. So often, a narrator can add extra enjoyment to an e-book and this is one!
***** Engrossing, Hilarious & Very Enjoyable ***** I love this audiobook; it's quirky, playful and thoroughly entertaining, with many laugh-aloud moments. The storyline is engaging, a rendition of a modern fairy-tale, where a commoner finds love with a charming royalty. It began with a chance encounter between, Izzy, a department store clerk and the Devil Duke of Devoy, a blue-blooded English royalty.
Trevor, The Devil Duke is on a mission to change his playboy ways and becoming a country gentleman. The plan is simple, a pretend marriage with the shop girl, to get the media off his back, improve his reputation and enabling him to direct his attention to fatherhood. It all sounds great in theory, but some things are easier said than done. What wasn't considered is Izzy herself, the much younger fake bride. Like a fireball of hyper-energy, Izzy springs into Trevor's life, turning it inside out with her adorable ways. Before Trevor realizes, Izzy has warmed her itsy-bitsy self into his heart while splashing his world with brilliance.
In addition to a well-composed story, Tessa Bowen has done an exceptional job with character developments. Izzy and Trevor are the polar opposites with charged chemistry, pulsating to erupt. She is very petite, spunky, inelegant, and lively. He on the other is, the classic playboy bachelor, tall, elegant, seductive, extravagant, and notably handsome. Together, they are fascinating and hilarious, their back and forth banter will keep you smiling throughout the book.
The narration by Virginia Ferguson is outstanding, she really channelled the characters and their personality quirks. I wholly enjoyed her performance. Overall, Devil Duke is a fun and very enjoyable audiobook and highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed this book. This was the first time I’ve listened to a romance novel and I was pleasantly surprised. The story reminded me of My Fair Lady in that a commoner is taken in by the aristocracy and made over to become a Duchess. I really enjoyed the characters though there were times when lead female’s voice was a bit much. As the book continued, I feel like the narrator toned her voice down a bit and it was much more pleasant to listen to.
There were a few points that I didn’t like. There were a couple of times that I beleive the lead character should have stuck up for herself earlier than she did, but she did stick up for herself. There were also phrases that were used, sometimes to excess, and it was a little repetitive. I think that was to show the immaturity of the lead character, but it did become a bit much after a while.
While the story itself is one that is often told, (rich playboy meets common girl, falls in love, etc.) this version felt fresh and new and also added the element of the playboy having a young daughter. It added additional complexity to the story and more opportunities for humor and character development and discovery. It was a great story and one that I will likely listen to again. It is also the first in a series and I have already started on the next one!
I was provided with a free copy of this audiobook for my honest review. The views expressed here are entirely my own.
I love, Love, LOVED this story! It’s so much more than a stuffy British story. This is the story of a light hearted free spirit..a fairy..if you will. Everyone who meets her is enchanted. She is looked upon with favor when she meets a man dropped from the heavens. Little does she know he might look delicious but his attitude needs adjustment.
Izzy is a delight to read! She makes me smile just reading about her. The way she portrays herself and doesn’t hold back is inspiring. Izzy is the star of this book. Trevor is her counterpart. He is stiff, formal and wildly attractive. He needs a proper wife to dispel rumors of his womanizing ways. I loved that he couldn’t figure out why every liked Izzy so much. She was like a puzzle to him. I enjoyed Travis as well but Izzy easily out ranked him.
I could listen to this one again and again! It made me laugh and shake my head. These two together (Izzy and Travis) are such a joy to read. The Epilogue is one of my favorite chapters. I could really see the changes and the fun that they have between them. Insert *Smile* here.
I did listen to this on audio. Virginia Ferguson did an outstanding job. Very pleasant on my ears and listening to the two different accents was great. I liked her “fake” British accent that Izzy did. Ha Ha!
** audio book review ** I just absolutely loved this book. I was a little bummed when it ended. The Devil Duke (Trevor) and Izzy couldn't be more opposite. Trevor needs to fix his image and stop being a playboy and focus on fatherhood. Izzy is a young woman who has had a hard life but isn't one to dwell on it. A chance encounter with a tabloid picture making up a relationship has them in a unique arrangement. She will be his wife for image only. Only their opposite attraction makes for one great love story. Trevor is used to everyone doing as he says and expects Izzy to listen to his commands on how she should be. Well Izzy isn't like most women he knows. She is stubborn and independent and very unique. I absolutely adored her. Their interactions had me cracking up through out the book. This narrator did a great job in expressing the personalities of both characters in her narration. I couldn't get enough of The Devil Duke and Izzy. I can't wait to read the second book in this series.I also must note that this author wrote the most beautiful love scene I have ever read/heard. Romance fans definitely need to read/listen to this book.
When Izzy faints in the Devil Duke's arms, she has no idea she'll be swept into his world and asked to pose as his new bride. The Duke is trying to change his womanizing image, and he thinks that the American orphan that captured the public's heart might do. But Izzy is no wilting flower, except when the Duke is kissing her, and their polar opposite personalities get them both into trouble.
This was a cute read, it's a dialogue driven story with plenty of sparring between our main couple. I enjoyed their banter and it was fun reading what Izzy would say next to get under the Duke's skin. I love books with kids in them and Charlotte was a sweetie.
The narrator has a British accent of the main part of the story, and an American accent for Izzy, and reads with a deep voice that makes her perfect for the Duke. I switched back and forth between the ebook and the narration and enjoyed them both. I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.
I enjoyed listening to this contemporary fairy tale. Quite an unlikely pair, Trevor and Izzy, each go thru a transformation, for the better, as they get to know each other and fall in love, they are better together than alone. She helps him lose some of his upper class obnoxious attitude and he helps her leave the past behind. It is hard not to like Izzy, real and true, she is quite a character, made me laugh out loud. Not sure I liked Charlotte at the beginning, but she grew on me. Love Archie, he is a hoot. Their journey is quite entertaining with a few hiccups and almost not a happy ending one, but they do get the their HEA in the end. Looking forward to the next story. - 4 stars
My first listen from Ms. Ferguson, listening to the voices she gave the characters was entertaining and the various accents that are delivered with ease, made it easy for me to visualize the characters. - 4 stars
This was my first Tessa Bowen's book, and won't be the last! I love this modern Cinderella story! The story is beautifully written. The Duke (Trevor) and Isabelle (Izzy) are both great characters. They are total opposites, but they share a strong chemistry. Izzy is a strong sassy and feisty woman. Trevor was a manwhore before Izzy, and it's really delightful to see him fall in love with Izzy. The little Charlotte is also a cute character. The storyline is filled with hilarious scenes, sexy and steamy scenes, and romantic scenes. I love the ending! Now, I can't wait for the next book in the Series! Virginia Ferguson has done an amazing job with the narration. I love her voice. I really enjoyed my listening and totally recommend this audiobook. I received this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
I loved this read / listen! So much fun - this listen had me laughing out loud with these main character antics. Isabelle is now one of my favorite people - her sassy wit and ability to let things go amaze me and I love that she won't change who she is for anyone or anything! I think I fell a little in lust with this devil duke too! A handsome rake who gets charmed by the most unlikely of sorts! Great storyline and I loved the flow - never got bored. The narrator did a great job on this as well! I may just have to listen to this one again and again - I enjoyed it so much!
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review! *review is based on the audio version of this read
A rendition of a Cinderella story with an arranged marriage to try and improve the image of a known playboy, the Devil Duke, to a common girl. While at times Izzy's immature attitude made me want to shake her, she was bold enough to call the Duke out on his $#!+. I enjoyed their banter and while the storyline progressed along a predictable path, it still kept my interested.
Tessa Bowen did an excellent job at describing the characters and their internal monologues really helped.
Virginia Ferguson did an excellent job with the character voices snorts, gum smacking and all. She is very talented.
I received a free audible code through a Facebook group giveaway and am providing my honest review voluntarily.
Typical Cinderella story, but lovely all the same. There was a bit of added enchantment that made it even more charming. You can’t help falling in love with these lively characters. It lost a star for me for 2 reasons. The beginning was a bit rushed for me. I would have liked a little more background on the characters before jumping right in, but that’s just personal preference. Also, I had a really difficult time with Izzy’s language. It was very repetitive and by the end, a bit annoying.
Even though I was annoyed by the repetitive use of the word friggin, Izzy and Trevor’s story was cute and sweet. The banter between the characters made me laugh, they had good chemistry and the story was well thought out. I listened to this book on audible. The narration was good. The british accent was totally believable and enjoyable to listen to. The american accent was put on and didn’t seem authentic, it was annoying to listen to at times. It would have been better to have two different narrators, one for each of the characters.
I purchased this book by mistake as I generally do not read contemporary romance. I quickly realized it was a contemporary version of a regency romance I read (Callie Hutton’s The Duke’s Quandary) I hope the same author under a different pen name.
It’s getting 2 stars because I don’t like the genre but managed to read 90%.
It is not a love triangle, but more two side characters used as tension generators with no true romance with either side character.
I received this audio book free for an honest review. Can you say "My Fair Lady"? The beginning of the story is flavored with a commoner versus an aristocrat. The author did a great job of making the story flow smoothly and building the characters. The narrator did a good job with both accents. Enjoyed this book from beginning to end.
Izzy Is a poor American girl, Trevor is the rich English Aristocratic. Their story is a unique twist on rich playboy meets common girl. The story is witty and clever with so much humor I laughed all the way through it. Definitely could be a Hallmark Movie
The narrator did a great job with all the characters
I really enjoyed the chemistry between the characters in this book. I did get a little frustrated with the portrayal of the English leading man but soon realised that this is his personality rather than what the author thinks English people are like!
i have mixed feelings about this book. The story plot was ok with plenty of laugh out moments, but the reason for my low star rating is i found it offending at times. The way Izzy spoke using variations of the word spazz and pervert. It made it hard to listen too at times struggled to finish.
I received this book for free for a honest review. I love how Izzy calls Trevor a weirdo pervert. I loved the storyline and how it was all held together.
I liked this way more than I thought I would. At times the dialogue seemed far fetched for the situation the characters were in but it was entertaining. I predicted a good amount of it but it was still funny and cute. I didn't like the overuse of the words "friggin" and "spaz". It was a decent background read and something to break up the heavy stuff I had been reading.
