Toe Eater by E. A. Hoffman is a creepy little story that I thought was very well executed.
Martin has been terrified of snails since childhood, thanks to his older brother tormenting him with stories about snails eating people's toes. Now his young daughter wants a snail for a pet, and Martin's worst fears start coming back to life.
I actually found myself feeling sorry for Martin. His fear may seem ridiculous to everyone else, but it's very real to him. I could understand Maggie's reaction because she's only four, but I found Lisa's inability to understand her husband frustrating. Martin is terrified, but he can't explain what he's experiencing in a way that makes anyone believe him.
And that's what makes this story work so well. Are the snails really attacking him, or has his fear taken over? Either way, the horror is real to Martin, and the ending leaves you questioning what actually happened.
Five stars for a story that takes a bizarre premise and turns it into something genuinely unsettling.
