November Bookclub Read. I so enjoyed the book but at times I was stuck. I have a very hard time reading out of sequence. I feel like I am not giving the story justice if I don't follow it from the beginning. But all and all I loved the story and where the series is headed. Three girlfriends who have come from the bottom to the top within the drama of working and dating on the D.C. Capital Hill. They are all going through some things but they continue to be there for each other and they all hold their own. I will definitely continue to follow Angela Winters with this series and also her series Park View. It's great to read a series where African American Women can agree to disagree and still hold true to their friendship.

Nothing to lose

This book was chosen for my November Bookclub Meeting. I enjoyed the book and I feel like the series will go on and get even better. Living the life on Capitol Hill has to be full of drama. There's no other place like it, and the girls seem to handle their own.

The political and professional world of Washington D.C. will never be the same as Sherise, Billy and Erica make their mark. They are three friends with their own stories and as their lives take twists and turns and a few minor setbacks they respond with boldness, sass and determination. These ladies make Nothing to Lose a very involved read.
Out of the gate with gusto, the novel ushers the reader into the political world of D.C. . Hope you know a bit of political jargon because there’s a huge douse in the beginning. This, coupled with several characters being introduced will either cause you to pay attention or get lost. By the middle, the read simmers some with a smooth, steady pace. The characters are developing nicely and the drama is measured. Winters closes the story in a polished manner and with everything that happened, (especially the couple of curve balls that spiced it up), a sequel is expected but the reader is not left unsatisfied.
Winters is intelligent and for the most part keeps it classy. She chose to focus on the whole life of the woman and not just her bedroom skills, which is something AA fiction hasn’t seen enough of in a long time. Well done.

I gave this a good rating mostly because I am in DC and love to be able to imagine where they are (so to speak) although I did get confused and started reading the wrong book out of sequence, I just stopped and order the right book. Nice story but no like I couldn't put it done. Wasn't shocking or exciting but 3 interesting characters to follow. Thus far book 1 of the DC Series was the best most likely because I was just getting to know the characters.

Great come back. Billy had to lose love then gain it back, ladies let this be a lesson learned. When a relationship ends take your time before you move on. Go over it in your mind and heart. Because in each relationship there is a lesson to be learned. Both Billy and Porter had mad love for each other, but because of Porter's infidelity he couldn't forgive himself and move one without Billy. Billy wanted to move on but was too busy trying to get revenge. It almost coast her the love of her life. Something's aren't meant to be. As for Erica we'll better luck next time.

When revenge backfires!

Nothing to Lose is my first read by Angela Winters. It is the third installment in the D.C. series. It was an enjoyable read overall. It was not difficult for me to follow the story even though I had not read the first two books in the series. The first three chapters did drag a little, but I flew from there with one drama unfolding after another.
The story takes place in our Nation's Capitol, Washington D.C, and centers around Erica, Sherise and Billie; three young women who have each made their way through the powerful political ranks in their own rights. Erica worked at the Pentagon for a woman who despised her. With her powerful father, who no one else knows about, she secures a position on his campaign working for Alex who she is quickly falling for. However, her father, who she just discovered as an adult is dead set against it. And he gets what he wants by any means necessary. Why? Alex is not like the usual thugs that she dates. Sherise is married to lobbyist Justin. She is basking in the joy of being amongst the political elite. However, she is a sought after communications liaison and is working on a campaign for a candidate going against her ex lover who is also her friend Erica's father Nolan. Their secret may shatter her dreams and destroy her family. Her husband Justin has issues of his own when a co worker makes harsh accusations toward him. Lastly, there is Bobby an attorney who recently escaped a scandal by mixing business with pleasure. She's fallen for Michael, who works as a talent scout for the new firm she works for. He likes her too, but he refuses to compete with her need for revenge against her ex husband Porter. The three ladies each have their hands full with secrets, scandals and staying on top of their respected careers. Will the secrets come out? Will the scandals destroy them? Will revenge backfire?
I enjoyed the story. The author is definitely an attorney as the legal and political jargon was on point. I would have liked a little more description of the characters and different places where their girl get togethers and dates took place. I have no clue what any of the characters look like. For those of us that had not read the first two installments we did not get an introductory background of the characters. Anyone who picks up this book, should be able to get a brief background on the characters past before their current story is told, if the book is part of a sequel. There was room in this book for that to be done. It was not very long. The story was well written enough for me to deduce certain things such as Sherise being unfaithful to her husband in the past, Billie being in a power struggle of a marriage and then going through a terrible divorce and Erica finding out that Nolan was her father through her ex boyfriend who was a drug dealer.
The author did a wonderful job of illustrating how revenge backfires. Certain characters made a point to bring that to light. Michael advised Billie, "Revenge never goes the way you want it to unless you're evil enough to risk everything." I love that statement.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and the dramatic build ups. I like how the girls' different scandals intertwined. more imagery and character background would take this 3 star to a 5 star. It was refreshing to read a story about African Americans in the forefront of the political sector. A legal drama worth the read. If you enjoy legal thrillers and drama, you will enjoy this novel. I give it 3 stars.

I never buy a book unless the back catches my attention and boy did it. This is the first time I read a book by this author and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. Looking forward to reading the other two books in the series.
