I had a rather short area here telling a little about me but then I had more than a few people ask me to expand it so... here goes. LOL. I'm a full time home 'supervisor' which is a nice word for saying I'm a housewife. I'm married happily, I met my dream guy 20 years ago, and we have 4 children. I live in Southern California and I can't function without iced coffee. I believe in romance, I've always been a daydreamer, and I'm a HUGE fan of books, always have been.

No, I didn't know that I always wanted to write. I inhaled books as a child. I read entire series (Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, Trixie Beldon, The Borrowers, etc) in a matter of days at a time. By the time I was nine years old I had an adult library card where I visited often. I moved on to John Saul, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Agatha Christie, and then found romance. I was hooked. I wrote poetry in my teens and then moved on to short stories. My first book was started after I read a real bomb of a book that ticked me off with really horrible characters and a plot that was shabby at best and I thought... I could do better. LOL.

I wrote my first book which will probably never see the light of day in the early 90's. I wrote a series of a few books from it. I'm a series fan! I kept writing for fun, wrote MANY books and then in 2009 I decided to try to get published. I wrote my first Sci Fi romance and Ral's Woman came to be. I submitted it and with a little tweaking, Ellorascave sent me an acceptance letter. It was kind of a 'Cinderella' experience for me. It's been a terrific ride so far and I'm really happy that I finally had the time to commit to writing full time. It's a dream come true.

I absolutely adored these two stories, 927 more than 140. Though 140 does fulfill the cover and rips off his hoodie.
description

Both stories were a bit short. A little longer than a novella about 150 pages each, they did feel a tiny bit rushed at points. Maybe it was just me but both guys did a some quick turnabouts in certain matters. Then again New Species don't take anything slow once they make up their minds.

If you've randomly stumbled upon this modest review I urge you to go read the first book. You wont regret it. For those of you who have been on the New Species boat from the beginning these two stories are excellent additions to the series.

I practically inhaled the whole book and both stories moved me to tears more than once. Especially 927!
description

I didn't remember 140/Mourn from the previous books but that didn't detract or deter me any from liking his story. Mourn has lost his mate and he's suicidalpunishing himself over it until Dana comes along. Her husband passed away so she understands Mourn better than anyone. They bond over their heartache and learn to move on together. It was sweet and touching with a touch of crazy drama towards the end.

Now, 927 I remember because I wanted to learn his story since Tammy from Valiant got thrown in the cell with him. I shed a tear or two or five, during this one. Candi's story and everything she went through was really well written with a few flashbacks and alternate POVs. I wont say more, I believe it's better to go in this one without much detail.

I was greatly entertained and totally immersed in the New Species world and did not want to leave. Now, I really want to read Vengeance's book! Or Lash from the wild zone like Valiant!

Numbers, the latest addition to Laurann Dohner’s New Species Series contains 2 novellas in the book, hence it being listed as #14-15 in the series.

Book 1: New Species feline previously known as #140, introduced in Wrath #6 in the series, is now known as Mourn. Having lost his mate from all the tests carried out by Mercile, he’s now determined to ending his life. He has no purpose to continue living and does everything possible to be taken down by his Species brothers.

Dana is visiting her brother Paul, who works as a medic in Homeland’s Medical Section, where she meets Mourn.
Having lost her loving husband to cancer, she understands what Mourn is going through. She wants to help ease his pain.
would have liked a bit more of their relationship and a bit less about their dead spouses.

This was a sweet story of two people in pain, who find solace in each other.

Book 2:This is Hero previously known as #927, who was introduced in Valiant #3 in the series, having been the one to keep Valiant’s mate, Tammy safe during their capture before they had been rescued.
As a child, during his captivity, he had shared a cell with Candi, a human child and daughter of an evil Mercile scientist. The two children had formed a very strong bond but when Hero was rescued, he believed what he had been told – that he had killed her.

Candi was transferred from the Mercile labs to a mental institution by her father, who had told her that 927 had been destroyed.
After years of pain and abuse and torture by one of her father’s assistants, she’s not become redundant after her father’s death….and Candi knows that this is the last chance she will have to escape before the assistant kills her.

Fleeing after being forced to kill Penny, the assistant, or be killed, she hitchhikes across the country determined to find Homeland, the place she’s heard that she will be safe.

Hero and Candi discover that they have been lied to about each other’s so called deaths when she finally arrives at the New Species home.

I felt for these two. The torture and hurt they experienced. The things they did to keep each other safe during their time together as prisoners in a cage, was really sad to read about.

There are a lot of issues both will have to deal with before they can be together again.
Candi never gives up on Hero. She loves him and she knows he loves her. She will do anything to get him to see that the two were always meant to be together.

Their story was my favorite in this book. I just wished it had been a bit longer.

Romance: ❤️💙💚❤️💖
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌎🌍
Character development: 🤓😉🤨☺️🥰
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Solo Narration

The heroine: Dana - She is a human visiting Homeland because her brother Paul lives and works there and is a Nurse. Both her mom and her brother worry about her because she doesn’t date. It has been two years since her husband Tommy died. She had quit nursing school because she spent too much time in hospitals with Tommy.

The Hero: Mourn (a.k.a. #140) - He is rushed into the medical center while Dana is touring it with her brother. He is seen as a troublemaker and is in the clinic every few weeks and is considered suicidal since he lost his mate. He picks fights with other males hoping one of them will kill him.

The Story: Dana can relate to Mourn since she used to feel the same way. She told the doctors that it helps to talk with others who have been through the same thing since she attended group grief counseling after Danny died. They agreed to let her try even though Mourn is unpleasant and could be dangerous.

I don’t really like romance stories where one or both of the main characters lost someone they loved. I hate the whole ‘getting over grief’ storyline and I really like it when the characters find love for the first time. However, this one wasn’t bad. I liked how Dana and Mourn got to know each other's story. I also loved the fact that Darkness started to help Mourn to get Dana to like him. Another thing is the fact that Species fall for someone and know immediately they want to spend their life with that person, it is insta-love at its best, but still in this context, you know it is forever. I really liked it in this story.

The heroine: Candi - as a child she was at a Mercile facility because her father worked there as a doctor and had killed her mother and her mother’s lover. However, Candi had seen too much and he was afraid she would talk unless she became part of the research. She was put into a cell with 927 who was about the same age as Candi.

The Hero: Hero (a.k.a. #927) - he and Candi were together in the same room until they got older and were only allowed to see each other once a week and had rules about not touching each other. Then one day something happened, and he never saw her again.

The Story: 23 years later, Candi was in a mental health facility. She had tried to escape a few times before but knew she would never give up. She threw away all of her medication and planned to get out once and for all after hearing that her father had died. She just found out that the Director, Penny had been sleeping with her father and had been paid well to keep her in the hospital.

Though now that he was dead and could no longer pay Penny, she was planning to kill Candi so she couldn’t tell anyone what Penny had done. Penny takes Candi on a little trip out to the woods after the drugs put Candi to sleep. Though Penny didn’t know that Candi was fully awake and pretending. When Penny stopped and tried to get Candi out of the car, Candi came out of her pretense and turned the tables on Penny and left for Homeland.

Candi shows up at Homeland and demands to be let in. She claims to be one of the New Species. She tells them that 4 days ago she escaped captivity and killed a woman who worked for Mercile. They let her in to Homeland and she tells them that she was raised at a research facility from ages 5-16 and then has been in an asylum ever since. She thinks that Mercile killed the male she loved after making him think she betrayed him, and she wants to find all the rest of the Mercile employees and make them pay.

When Hero hears the story of the female that was brought to the medical facility at Homeland who had grown up in a research facility, he runs to medical to find out what is going on. Things don’t go too smoothly from there since he thought she had betrayed him back when they were young and I didn’t really like that situation.

This was a different story than the rest in this series. There have been some where the human females worked at the Mercile research facilities where the New Species were experimented on and some where they just meet the New Species after they are free, but this is the only one where a human female grew up in a research facility along with the New Species and was also a test subject. It was a good premise and I liked it.

This book was told via solo narration in dual points of view and was narrated by Vanessa Chambers. This was the last audiobook in this series, and I have listened to them all. Though I like romance books better with both a male and a female narrator, I have to give Vanessa props for doing this series so well. She has a bunch of different voices for different characters, and I haven’t gotten sick of her voice yet, so that is telling.

All in, I will give this 3 stars.

While I enjoyed it, I had issues.

Mourn's book, while sweet and I was happy for the HEA quite frankly felt like filler and lazy filler at that. There was just nothing to it, no development, given the tragic back stories of the heroine and hero. It was an easy read and easily forgettable.

Although Mourn had some smooth moves!

Hero's story, well, given the anticipation for his story since book 3 (which by the way remains by far my fave) I expected more. And indeed it started strong and I thought it would be brilliant. But it just fell flat and rushed. And I sort of did not like the heroine, but then felt guilty for not liking the heroine.

Overall, this was a not quite living up to expectation 3 stars. And maybe it would have always been that way, especially for 927 as we have waited YEARS for his story. But, it never really got too deep, or ever really lived up to the promise.

I can see why some of my friends had to take some time to review after reading. I never do that, but for this book I did need to sleep on it. I really wish I could score these novellas separately but since I cannot the overall rating reflects both stories. My shelves are also confusing because some apply to only one story. I think it will be clear in my review.

First, I am a big fan of the series and am thrilled to see the author back! Even though I am a big fan, I have not liked all of the books in the series but have read them all.

Story 1 - 140 (Mourn) 5 huge stars!!!!

Loved it. Don't need to say a lot here. I usually do NOT do stories where the characters have dead exes. But I LOVED this story. Dana is awesome. Brave, sweet, caring and perfect for Mourn. Mourn reminds me of all the best things about New Species. He puts his heart out there honestly with almost childlike naïveté. What they have together is beautiful and no one will be unhappy with it or even how they got there. The very beginning is sad because he desperately needs to talk about his mate's death. Those of us who read Wrath will remember 140 and his mate. It was so sad what happened to her. I was sad but totally ok with them discussing the losses in their lives.

This story moved fast, had very little outside interference so it was super easy to read. Darkness plays a role and, surprise surprise, he was entertaining!

The epilogue was a terrific surprise. I highly encourage everyone who likes any of the New Species stories to read this one!

Story 2 - 927 (Hero) barely 3 stars.

Anyone who followed some of my reading updates knows I went through the ringer. Cried big ugly tears. This story broke my heart. What happened to them, Candi in particular, was horrible. How Hero reacted when they were reunited was terrible.

The emotional journey of crying and sobbing only lasted one day in the book, but it was a hell of a day!

This is a VERY emotional journey. So be prepared for angst. But the relationship angst is only the very long one day. Then Hero finally gets his shit together (with the help of the ever awesome Breeze) and the story runs true to form. By that point I was so wrung out, I was pretty disinterested. But it ended up the same as all NS stories.

If you can handle angst and separations and OW being right there. Then you will like it. It is sweet to see lost loves reunited. It is just not my cuppa. If it is yours do not read the spoilers below. You will probably prefer to read these things in the book first!

Safety Gang spoilers - apply to Hero's story only

WOW!!! No surprise, I fell in love with Numbers, and me waiting almost a year to have it was worth it. Mrs. Dohner did a great job making the book from two small stories from previous characters in Wrath and Valiant.

The first mini book was 140 (from Wrath) story; you probably remember that he had a mate in that book, but she was very sick. She didn't make it and 140 (Mourn) is having a hard time with the loss, but Dana (who is Paul's sister) knows what he is going threw (beacause she lost her husband) and is determined to help him. Their story is about finding someone who understands you, doesn't pity you, and learning to love again.

The second mini book was 927 (from Valiant) story; you probably remember he was the male that killed any human female that came in to his cell, but he didn't kill Tammy (Valiant's mate). He has the most saddest pass I won't go into much because to me this was the best mini story in this book, and I don't want to ruin it for anyone. But, just know that a female use to share a cell with him also, and he to lost her. This story is so beautiful that I cried at one point, and it isn't even a full book!

All I have to say is I love this series, and I can't wait for more!!

This is straight from Laurann's FaceBook! "Official book news. I'm wrapping up the next NS book. I'm hoping to have it finished within a week. It has to be edited, final line edited, and then it will be assigned a release date for pre-order. The name of the book will be.... Numbers. It will have two novel length stories in one book. 140 (from Wrath) and 927 (from Valiant). I'll keep you updated so as soon as I hear the release date...you'll know it. I'll update my website as soon as I do. Thank you for your support. I know I'm a bit slower at writing these days but I'm super excited about getting the next New Species book out. Have a great day"

MOURN (140) & DANA

One of the most heartbreaking stories. Dana has lost her husband and Mourn has lost his mate. The two of them will find mutual understanding and they will fall in love.
I loved Darkness' help bringing them together. I loved the new incident with the flags from Shadow's book.
But mostly I loved the confrontation with Dana's mother and Mourn. This is demostrated on the book's cover by the way...

HERO (927) & CANDI

Another hearbreaking story.
Canti was a human child who grew up amongst species. A lot of experiments were done to her.
Hero was her lost love. I really wanted to strangle Hero and that's enough said.

This is gonna be tough. Time to think and time to ponder. After sleeping on this Review for about a week, I have made my mind up. Overall the book as an entity deserves 4 Stars.

Book 1

 photo Mourn_zpsd1claphi.jpg

Mourn is suicidal and has on numerous accounts tried to pick a fight with Darkness who is one BAMF.

Dana, Paul's sister who works for NS in the Hospital is visiting after her mother constantly tries to set her up with OB/GYN. I mean really?

Paul is showing Dana around the clinic until Mourn is brought in. Where Dana wants to stay and help Mourn.

"I'm Dana, Paul's sister. We're alone. So you can stop pretending you're still out for the count."

They have both experienced lost and become friends. I found the sharing of their stories to be beautiful but also really depressing.

Darkness is keeping an eye on Mourn.

"Do you plan to stalk her every night?" "I'm not Stalking her, I'm watching over her."

Mourn is adorable, sweet and romantic and does the weirdest things to catch Dans's heart.

I loved that Paul bought Mourn condoms and that he gets a condom talk from Jinx.

I'd say that this book deserved 3.5 Stars.

Book 2

 photo 927 - Hero_zpsjxtiqjna.jpg

The writing style and the set up of this book was completely different to Mourn's book and I should have read them separately but I can't get enough of this series.

Candi was given to Mercile as a child by her father. He committed murder and the witness was to be taken care of.

She is put into a room with a pup. 927 or in later years Hero. They are it for one another. But Mercile play cruel games with them.

The interaction between the past and the future was good and I really felt for them.

So Candi scarificed her virginity to save Hero and he gets pissed although he has been mounting females. Pot meet kettle. Besides the fact that Candi was stuck in an Asylum and commits murder to escape death. Douche.

Breeze pulled rank which was epic. And Kat kicked arse with the Feds.

There are so many of NS I would like a book about. Searcher, Dreamer, Flame, Jinx, Snow.

**re-read** and I think I liked these books more the second time around, did I still have issues sure, but surprisingly I really liked Hero more. Did I get really mad at him, yes and I didn't like the situation with him and Kit but I liked these both more the second time around.

As a whole I would rate this one a 4 but I want to review these two novellas separately.

In book one 140, we meet Morn and Dana. We first saw Mourn or 140 a few books back when he was held prisoner and did all his captives wanted to keep his mate safe. Now Mourn is self destructive and wants to die. His mate 139 has died and he has no reason to live. Paul the nurse at Homeland has asked his sister Dana to visit and while touring the hospital Mourn is brought in. Everyone knows what Mourn is after and isn't surprised to see him yet again in the hospital. When Dana is told about Mourn her heart breaks for him. After being married to her childhood sweetheart Dana was devastated when he died of cancer. Seeing Mourn's pain Dana wants to help.

Mourn never thought he would meet someone he could open up to but Dana makes him comfortable talking about his grief. The more time they spend together the more their relationship begins to change, and each of them begins to want new and different things. But even when Mourn tries to start a new life with Dana, Dana begins to wonder if she is just a replacement for Morns lost mate.

I really liked this one I love that we got Mourn's story, and my heart broke for both Dana and Mourn. I was a little worried that I wouldn't be convinced Mourn and Dana loved he other more than anyone else but I did believe that. I will say I wish more happened in this book, this is the first New Species book that is focused only on the couple and while it was nice I did miss the conflict the evil anti New Species people causing problems. But all in all this was a nice novella.

In book two 927 we see Hero and Candi. This one started really different and exciting Candi and Hero grew up together after she was placed with 927 when he was a young New Species at Mercill. After years of being best friends 927 and Candi fell in love and then the unthinkable happened. Now many years later Hero is free after Valiant freed him and his mate Tammy. Hero never talked about his lost love and tried to move on as best as he could. Candy wasn't so lucky she was transferred to an asylum and held against her will. Now finally free Candi runs right to the Homeland hoping they will help her get revenge.

When Homeland see's and hears what happened to Candi they welcome her with open arms and as family. Hero hears all the commotion and then is shocked to hear it may be Candi. When he runs to medical to find out he is floored to see Candi isn't dead. Seeing 927 Candi is complete but hero doesn't feel the same way and runs. But Candi is strong and stubborn even after all she endured and she won't give up.

**some spoilers ahead**This one is hard to rate for me I loved the story it was so different and I loved Candi but at the beginning Hero made me mad. Mates are number one and yet he is not happy to see her, and I started to not like him at all. Candy had to do all the work and that is not what New Species have ever been like. Then I started to like Hero A LOT when he finally pulled his head out of his butt. Hero was great he doted on Candi and his only concern was her she was it. AND THEN we get to the part that really made me mad. Hero was mad at Candi when they were held captive and as stupid as the reason was I got it he is a male**big spoiler so I am skipping the reason*** but we get a nice dose of double standard.

Hero has had many other "partners" and thats ok but to talk about the one Candi was with and Hero says he wants to know who he was so he can kill him. Candy after all she went though was a little jealous of ALL the New Species Hero had been with but come on Candi its not a big deal he was free he did his thing while you were being drugged and held captive(no biggy right) and lets hear about the ones he's been with and lets have them still be around Hero, and hey lets through in some more. They are friends and hang out with Hero and Candi but lets not tell her we slept together(it's not like this is something we should mention) and one planned to sleep with you but darn it Candi came to HomeLand(grr I hate when my plans are foiled) But dear old sweet Candi doesn't need to know that lets have these woman come to my house and cook for my woman and teach her thing. Thats normal(can you smell the sarcasm). This double standard was so huge I'm surprised it fit on the pages. I hated it (if you can't tell).

After these Huge rants(yes I know) I really wish that hadn't happened because this one would have been a huge five star book for me. Hero was great to her once his brain started working, there was one situation that kind of felt like it was thrown in there and wasn't finished enough for me but had these stupid things not happened I would have been so happy and since it was so unlike NS I tried to compartmentalize these issues and separate them instead of clumping them all together because everything else was great. What I loved I loved but what I hated I HATED. So all in all I am completely confused on how I feel can I get and eraser and take the stuff I hated out sadly no so............ yeah I'm sorry I don't exactly know.

I almost wish these were two individual books so I could relish giving Hero’s book zero star and Mourn’s book full star.
Dear god Hero was disgustingly awful...Enough said!

And on other hand I adored Mourn and his story.

I’m a huge and faithful fan of NSO, seriously if they were real I would totally doing everything in my power to get a job in Homeland, I’ll be happy just with be their friends =D
Now this is a 2 stories in one single book, but those stories are no shorties at all , in case u were wondering, both stories have complex and developed characters and a plot that would melt your heart.

And as always the sexy scenes…yummy yummy!!! And of course getting to see a lil flash of how the previous NSO are doing…is just like going back to home…yep! They’re like family!!!LOVE U NSO

So here my rev, for 140 & 927

Dana & Mourn

Dana’s a widow that happens to be the sister of one of the doctors that work at Homeland so in order to get a change of scenario she decides to go visit her bro at his work and just take a break of her crazy mom that has take the mission upon herself of getting her daughter a new hubby no matter what & no matter who that person is

So a break?yeah !!! that was in order!!!

When she gets to Homeland, the first one making a big impression of her is Mourn, whose name says it all.

Mourn is also a widower, lost the only mate he ever got by the hands of Mercile and now he has no reason to live for, so he’s always looking the easiest way of getting someone to finish his sorrow.

So these 2 broken hearts will make their own support club, which soon will become someing else in order to find their realseves through the eyes of the person they least expected it.

Dana married her hubby when she was too young, so she was never treated like a real grown up, while Mourn had a mate that didn’t love him, but that was given to him as an experiment from Mercile.

So when these 2 get together….do u think they would be able to mend the pieces of their hearts into a new one?

Candi & Hero

This story made me cry and scream in just a matter of seconds, this is really….argggghhh have no words to describe it.

Candi’s story remindedme a bit of Elle from book 1, Candi has spent all her life being treated like another NSO, when in reality she was a human child, but under that believing she also developed feelings toward her roommate 927, so was no wonder when they thought they were already mated.

But f*cking Mercile always extending their claws to things they shouldn’t ever touched, ruined their lives and futures only in order to get results of an experiment.

Now I don’t recall how many years later, after making them believe that their respective mate were death…they come to find each other at Homeland only to be reminded of the one thing that broke their relationship in a way neither of them never desired.

And now they’re facing every single problem they could ever imagine after Candi’s return and Hero’s past is up to both of them to surpass them all in order to be able to give their relationship another try. After all a lifetime relationship and real love are stronger than all the obstacles that may come.

And add to that all the sexy lessons they are about to learn & enjoy! =D

Oh and one of the females is becoming an erotica writer YAYYYY!

My thoughts?

I will make this quick: I LOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEE THEM

----------------------------------------------------------
LOOOVE IT!
I'm their total groupie, and if this were real I'd gladly drop my nationality and get into Homeland & Reservation.

We can always count on Laurann Dohner to deliver a captivating story. This time we get two for the price of one. I really enjoy the second book more...
The first mini book was 140 (from Wrath) story; you probably remember that he had a mate in that book, but she was very sick. She didn't make it and 140 (Mourn) is having a hard time with the loss, but Dana (who is Paul's sister) knows what he is going through , Cuz she lost her husband 2 years ago...and is determined to help him. Their story is about finding someone who understands you, doesn't pity you, and learning to love again. Although the transition from friends to lovers to mates is very fast if you are familiar with New Species series you’ll know this isn’t unusual and it all was so sweet that it really flowed well for me. I also like the addition of a family member (Dana’s mother) and her reaction to having a New Species son-in-law as you don’t really see that in the other books.

The mini book was 927 (from Valiant) story; you probably remember he was the male that killed any human female that came in to his cell, but he didn't kill Tammy (Valiant's mate). He has the most saddest pass I won't go into much because to me this was the best mini story in this book, and I don't want to ruin it for anyone. But, just know this was a different feel to the other books, but in a good way. Unlike other heroines in this series Candi was a human who was raised within Mercile with 927 This story is so beautiful that I cried at one point, and it isn't even a full book!

I am really hoping next book is one the Female New Species

Numbers is book fourteen in the New Species series by Laurann Dohner.

I like this series, but I was disappointed that we don’t get one full length novel. We have two stories on two different New Species in Numbers. They are quick and emotional.

140

Morn doesn’t believe taking a human female will help him heal.

This story tug’s at your heart strings. The emotional turmoil is vivid and, we as the reader, can’t help but empathize and get caught up in their sizzling chemistry. Dana meets Mourn when she visits Homeland. Both her and Mourn have lost someone in their past and so, they are hesitant about beginning a relationship. There is plenty of chemistry and emotion.

927

Hero comes face to face with his past.

This story tug’s at your heart too. What Candi and Hero went through in their past was heartbreaking. Candi doesn’t know that Hero is alive and it’s the same for Hero. She wants revenge for the male she lost and her only hope is reaching Homeland, but once she does her world is changed. There is major uproar and quite a bit of tension and emotional distress between Candi and Hero before they resolve their relationship.

Numbers is a nice edition. Though I prefer the full length novel. I still enjoyed coming back to the New Species world.

“You said I should change my life and find a reason to want to live. I chose you.”

“You were my one weakness,” he admitted. “I never meant to be. You were always my greatest strength.”

I loved both stories. Mourn and Dana were super cute together. I loved how Darkness helped him out. I really, really, enjoyed Hero and Candi. I loved when she called him her pup. It was both sweet and sad and so full of love.

My only complain, and now I’m scared for the next book, is that they needed their own book. It seemed rushed and the problems were solved too quickly. This book was more like two novelas and I needed more. There’s the whole scary mother in the first half. She even brought a doctor with her. That could have had more time. A whole extended plot with a crazy mother and even crazier doctor. The same thing with Hero and Candi. That deserved more attention. All the problems were glossed over.

I’m scared about the next book which is also a two book combo. If this continues I’m probably going to stop reading them.

5+ Numbers Stars

I don’t recall ever wanting to give more than 5 stars but this book I do. First I am a little sad that there are not any more books!
But it helped that this book was really 2 books in 1.

The first half is about Dana and Mourn both still pretty deep in their grief. Both lost their ‘mates’ and are having a hard time getting back into the swing of things.

This broke my heart over and over again. But Laurann Dohner has a way of getting us to root for these 2 injured souls.

Dana has had more time and experience with her grief so she befriended Mourn. Gosh I was torn apart by the sorrow and loss these 2 had. But I was so utterly happy when they turned to each other; they both deserve to be with someone who understands the hole they each have.

The second half of the book was about a human girl being raised in the testing facilities with a species.
How she survived the abuse and drugs inflicted on her. It was a powerful story of lose and how she fought with all that she was to get back to her pup. I loved this story the best.

The hero was so conflicted and he too was so hurt by his past. But it was his here and now that he had to deal with the guilt and the feeling of needing/wanting to flee. I loved how he fought himself to be what and who she needed.

This was a true love story of surviving at any cost and then learning to live. Love it.

I loveeeeeeeed Vanessa’s narration... Yep, I said it before on every review and I will stay it again. She brought these books to life with her voice and her words.
I would probably listen to anything she narrates from here on out she has me hook line and sinker.

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

4.0 RATING- The last several Species books have just been okay for me. I wasn't sure what to expect from this latest book but was happy with both novellas. While short on action both stories were big on heart and have me excited again about this series. I don't read a ton of paranormal but I can't seem to get enough of these New Species. I just want to cuddle them all, they are so sweet. Ive been inspired to do a reread of the series and am looking forward to future books.

On a side note, I'm desperate to read about a Gift Species and Trey falling in love. That story line is years in the making. I need it!!!

Numbers is actually a collection of two New Species story. I was actually thinking it would be a name, silly. But hell, all the titles were. What did you expect? Anyway, I’ve read 927 first and after finishing it, I did went back to 140. I wasn’t expecting much, or maybe I was. Hell, I hope there would be for the females. Anyway, here it is.

~~140 ★★★☆☆

140 is the New Species who were rescued when Tammy was kidnapped, whose mate was overly sick because of the drugs that has been continuously pumped to her body and didn’t made it long to live. After that, he called himself Mourn.

Dana is Paul’s brother, whose husband died of cancer two years ago.

Overall, the story were oo-kay for me. Although I’ve enjoyed the talk and the walk between the two, on the third, it kind of old for me. The scene was so familiar, because yeah, it happened already from the previous installments and as it was humorous back then, this time I didn’t feel how it was supposed to be intended as it is. Just, oh come on. Is there nothing new?

It was never exciting nor nothing new, but I didn’t totally hate the whole story as is the reason for my review. Anyway, I actually enjoy the meet the Dana and Paul’s mother part, I guess the funny thing was that it was so not the right place and not the right time for it and I don’t know, it just kind of funny in some way.

Maybe the other reason was that I enjoy the next story and this one came up short.

~~927 ★★★★★

“You were my one weakness,” he admitted.
“I never meant to be. You were always my greatest strength.”

927 was the New Species whom Tammy was put in a cage with for a breeding experiment during the captivity. After that, he took the name Hero.

Candi was raised as a New Species. She acts like one and thinks like one. She’s actually so so cute.

Both of them were kindred spirits and it was great to see that they were given a second chance. Their love story were actually heartbreaking and I’m just happy that finally, finally they became happy.

I love Candi’s endearment to Hero: My pup.

This book had 2 distinct stories in it, both of which I liked.

Story #1: Mourn and Dana

3.5-4 stars
Audio time: 0-5:29

This was a pretty good story. Dana is the sister of one of the doctors that works at Homeland (Paul) and is visiting him when the story begins. Mourn (previously # 140) is a NS male that lost his mate soon after the NS people were released from the labs.

Mourn has been really sad since he lost his mate and has been trying to pick fights with other NS males hoping to get himself killed (or at least use the physical pain to drown out the emotional pain he's feeling). He ends up getting himself hurt during a fight and is sent to medical while Dana is getting the tour from Paul. While Mourn is being tended to, Dana finds out that he lost his mate and is dealing with a lot of pain from that. Dana lost her husband to cancer 2 years before and can sympathize with what Mourn is going through so she decides to talk to him to see if she can help. The talking does help but soon Dana and Mourn find that they're attracted to each other. Soon they decide to try a relationship together and after getting past a few issues they end the story starting a HEA together.

I enjoyed this story very much. I liked Dana and Mourn and their story was pretty good. Considering where they both were at in the beginning of the story, it almost seemed like things evolved between them too fast but I felt good about where they were at when it ended so it work for me. Overall, I liked the story and that Mourn and Dana were able to find happiness together.

Story #2: Hero and Candi

4 stars
Audio time: 5:29-12:11

This was a very good story. Candi is the daughter of a scientist at Mercile (the lab that made the NS people and then kept them captive and experimented on them) who was thrown into the lab to live with the NS at the age of 5 years old. She was caged with a NS male known by the number 927 (who later takes the name of Hero). They were together for years and considered themselves mates before they were separated and each were told that the other was dead.

When she hit her teens, Candi and Hero were separated and then she was sent to an institution where she was imprisoned for supposed mental issues. She was there for years until the doctor that was being paid to keep her there decided she was better off dead. Candi was able to escape, get to the NS Homeland and convince them to help her. She thought Hero was dead and just wanted to avenge him and be with her own kind (since she grew up with NS she feels like she's one of them and doesn't trust humans). Candi and Hero both discover that the other is alive and they're pretty shocked. There was an unfortunate misunderstanding right before they were split up so the reunion isn't completely happy and Hero has a bit of trouble wrapping his head around the whole thing. Thankfully, they work things out and with a little bit of adjusting, Hero and Candi are able to start their well deserved HEA together.

I enjoyed this story very much. I liked both Hero and Candi and was glad they were reunited. The story did contain some flashbacks and my only complaint is that sometimes it seemed like there was no warning before the story jumped into a flashback (making me stop and figure out what shifted in the story). It wasn't a major issue though and outside of that I was very pleased with the story.

Overall, I liked this book. It was a bit weird having 2 stories in 1 book but it worked. I almost think that maybe I'd have liked the stories to be a bit longer but there wasn't really anything missing out of them. I liked all of the MCs and the stories were very enjoyable. I'd recommend this book. :D

* note - I listened to the audio version of this book and the narrator did a very good job.

This was a twofer book. Two independent stories in the series for fans to enjoy.

New Species #14: While visiting her brother Paul at Homeland, Dana is accidently drawn into a medical emergency when a New Species feline male is brought into the clinic with severe injuries sustained in a fight. Finding out that Mourn is a kindred spirit, Dana reaches out to the suffering male only to find out that in trying to heal Mourn, Mourn is about to heal her.

But not all are happy with the situation as Mourn is known to be unstable with concerns as to his motive in friending Dana.

- - - - - - - - - - - -

New Species #15: As a child Candi was brought into the Mercile Facility and kept as a prisoner, an experiment, that lingers into her adulthood. A prisoner even after all New Species were freed.

Finally escaping, Candi has only one goal. To find and travel to Homeland to demand justice for her male, #927, who died as a direct result of her. Revenge is her only thought until she finds out #927, now called Hero, isn't dead after all but wants nothing to do with her.

* * * *

Though this book can be read as a standalone it's not recommended or advised as the series builds off previous installments. Mourn made an appearance in Wrath while Hero was a secondary character in Valiant. Their stories are now told and I caution you that you'll need tissues available for portions of one of these stories.

For those interested in adult content. That shouldn't even be a question unless you haven't read any prior installments in the story in which case this shouldn't be the first of series you read. The author has capitalized on the benefits of the core animal (feline, canine, etc) to maximize the benefits of having sex with a New Species individual. Laugh out loud moment thinking of adult toy manufactures mimicking toys for women using this concept. lol.

Only issue I had with these stories are that while I totally appreciated the twofer I would have welcomed individual books fleshing out the actual stories more. However, I realize that is biting the hand that feeds my love of books addiction. In reality I'm not sure the author could have supported full novel status stories for our heroes so there's that.

In looking at the story installments and noting that these stories are #14 & 15, I have yet to feel that the series has run it's course. So keep on keeping on Ms. Dohner and please consider Jinx in the near future k?

Numbers contains books fourteen and fifteen in the New Species series by Laurann Dohner, that's right ladies, get your fans and an icy cold drink ready, we have a double helping of sexy, yet adorable New Species males! The stories are a little shorter, but Numbers contains two good length novella's so you definitely haven't been short changed.

Book #14 - Mourn formally 140

You may remember Mourn from Wrath's book (I think it's Wrath and Lauran's book, I could be wrong!) at that point, he was known as 140 and Mercile were controlling him by threatening his mate. As Mourn's name implies, the fate of his mate was tragic and he now feels he has nothing to live for, until Dana comes in to his life and tries to help him through his grief.

I really enjoyed this one, it was my favourite story in Numbers Mourn was a little bit wild and still adjusting to his life as a free male, which made him curiously, and adorably, innocent in some ways. And, although I debate the healthiness of replacing one mate with another to give yourself a reason to live, I still really enjoyed it. As expected it was sexy and sweet, these Species men really do know their way around a gal's body!

Book #15 - Hero formally 927

To remember 927, now known as Hero, you will need to stretch your mind back to Valiant and Tammy's book. When Tammy gets kidnapped she is put in a cage with a New Species male, 927, who does his best to look after her. Now, 12 books later we are getting his book. What Hero has hidden from everyone is that when in Mercile he was raised alongside a human girl,Candi, they shared the same cell and although never consummated anything, were mates. That is, until Mercile decided to play games, resulting in Candi's violent death. Her death haunts him; all he feels is a mixture of rage and loss, something he must face when Candi arrives at the gates of Homeland.

Candi has to be one of my favourite heroines in this series so far, although human, she has been raised as a New Species and apart from their physical aspects, has all their traits. I really enjoyed seeing Candi and Hero face their past and once again reunite, it was really touching, not to mention sexy as they finally get to explore one another. Another aspect of this novella I liked, was seeing all the females together as they all try and teach Candi about her new world, it was great to see some the heroines from the previous books and some of the New Species women.

Over all, I really enjoyed this book, both stories were great, I very quickly devoured them! I now CANNOT wait to see who is next, but I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for Flame!

Update 11/15/2021:
Whatever issues I had the last time I read these stories, upon finishing this book again today, I realized how much I like and connected to these characters. So I gave the book a solid 5 overall, and increased some stars for each individual story as well 🥰

140's story=4.5 Stars

I really loved this one from beginning to end. It definitely took me back to my New Species happy place I loved the MC's, their plight, how it all ended. Everything.

.. 927's story=4.0 Stars

I struggled a bit here with this one. It was good. I just couldn't fully connect with the MC's or their plight. Though heartbreaking, it was just missing something for me. Things improved alot during the middle & towards the end though. So overall it was a decent read. Just not the best for me.

Any New Species fan needs to read these stories though. So I recommend this read. If you're new to the Species clan, I strongly urge you to leave this review, go get book 1, and start from the beginning.
It's a lovely ride.

Happy Reading :)

5/5/2021 Quick re-read...L.L.'s Breeds binge had me thinking about this one...

Numbers is the first “double feature” which I think will be the new standard for releasing these. I thought I’d hate this layout, but it didn’t bother me. (which might be because I liked both) They're completely separate; the storyline/characters (other than usual sides Darkness, Justice, etc.) do not overlap at all. They are also both angsty rather than action motivated, and the focus is on the relationships not the typical “defeating the bad guy” scenario. This is basically 2-in-1 so this review will probably be long.

140
We met 140 (feline) in Wrath, he was one of the species rescued when Lauren was kidnapped. (he was with his very ill primate mate) I don’t recall them coming up again but I guess she didn’t make it because the book starts with a very sad/unstable Mourn (140) who is basically picking fights with other NS in hope that they’ll kill him. Dana is also a widow, and little sister to Paul the nurse.

“Does it get better? I feel so much pain.” The anguished tone of his voice killed the last of her fears. “Yes. When did you lose her?” “She was ill for a long time and lingered. She died months ago.” He paused, keeping his face in the shadows so she couldn’t see his expression. “The pain doesn’t ease and I’m angry.”

The book starts with Dana visiting Paul in the Medical Center and seeing Mourn arrive unconscious and bloody after picking a fight with Darkness. When she hears that he’s also a widow, she decides to stick around and offer friendship. The relationship starts as friends, but moves fairly quickly from sharing sex to I love you. My biggest complaint wasn’t the insta-lust-love but the whiplash of Mourn wanting to die of sadness of 139 to Dana being the love of his life in like 5 pages. Literally, Darkness suggest hooking up, and the next scene he’s all in. Thankfully Dana is rocking her human brain, so she slows his roll a bit. We get quite a bit from Darkness; he makes a great wingman for Mourn.

“I just flash her my stomach? That sounds easy.” “It’s a little more complicated than that. Do you know how you approach our females for sharing sex?” “Be blunt, tell them what we want and show our strength.” “Forget that. Don’t tell her you’d like to bend her over in front of you. Humans don’t usually respond well to that much honesty.”

Overall, I liked this one. I thought Mourn was sweet. (when he flashed Dana’s mom his abs…adorable)

927
We met 927 (canine) WAY back in Valiant, he was rescued when Tammy was kidnapped, and came from the Colorado facility where 861 (angry no-name primate) and the four who attacked Just/Jessie were also from. He’s been off page since then; I didn’t even know he had a name.

This one opens with a 5-yr old Candi being put into 927’s cage after she witnessed her dad killing her mom and BF. The first several chapters follows Candi as she makes her way to Homeland (after freeing herself) where she runs into 927/Hero. I really liked this concept; a human identifying as NS. I also thought they had some of the angstiest conversations of the series.

“Do you know what hurts the most?” “What?” He pulled his hand away. “It’s not that you mounted other females. You believed I’d chosen another male over you and that I died. It’s learning that you don’t want me anymore. I’m nothing now except bad memories that cause you to have terrible feelings. That tears me apart inside, Hero.” “I love you with everything that I am, but I won’t be selfish. I give you peace. Forget I am alive. I won’t exist to you anymore.”

Candi was the first h that is heartbroken about her male sharing sex with others. It was gut wrenching, and the most dialogue we’ve had between characters on the subject.

“Have you mounted females?” His silence seemed to tell her what words couldn’t. She spun away and hugged her middle, bending a little as if it caused her physical pain. He found himself halfway across the room before he brought his need to console her under wraps. He backed up, his hands clenching into fists.

Later he admits to sharing sex several times with Kit, as well as “others at Homeland and Reservation” but he leaves it at that. My issue was that it was handled as a HUGE double standard. Hero can only focus on Candi sharing sex with a feline ONE time while at Mercile…. that wasn’t even her choice. I’m not judging that he’s slept around since being free; he did think she was dead, but the two situations are SO not comparable, and ALL the focus is all on Hero’s feelings. They can’t even have a real discussion because he can’t handle his mate being forced to sex with someone, he doesn’t even know is alive. While Candi will have to live with his.

Overall, I really enjoyed the first ¾ then it went a bit sideways with tomatoes, Catholic shade, and the canine experience. 1-Candi was almost 6 when locked in Mercile; how does she know what carrot cake is, but not a tomato or shower curtain? 2- Comparing Catholics (birth control and in vitro comment) to crazy religious fanatics that want to kill all New Species, and “not good” people is shitty, and just as judgy as you’re accusing them to be. 3- Referring to sex as the “canine experience” was cringy.

Bottom Line- I did like both stories but think it would’ve flowed better if they had been connected somehow rather than independent plots smushed together. They were different in that there wasn’t really a “villain”, so it was low on action, and mostly focused on the actual development of the relationships. My biggest complaint is that I feel like this “world” is getting too big with too many characters. There are so many originals (Brass, Harley, Breeze, Trey, Kat) that haven’t received stories, but she keeps coming up with new characters to throw in the mix. Not to mention some of these “teasers” are so old that I think many readers won’t even remember the hints or events that led up to it. I’m writing this after Best Friends has been released, and I’m disappointed that it’s Snow & Lash’s books. Snow came onto the scene in Darkness, but has never had much page time, and Lash was mentioned in passing (having a conflict w/ Valiant) in Hero’s story. Setting aside the “originals” we’ve also been “teased” with Flame/Amanda, Midnight/Doc Harris, and Vengeance’s situation. There’s also Missy still hanging around, and Jericho, Jinx, Flirt, and Torment keep popping up. It feels like every book throws more balls in the air, and I would prefer to set some of the current ones down first. Not to mention, some have been kicked around so long that I think LD has forgotten details. Kit is a perfect example, she started out nice, then was nasty after Justice mated Jessie, then in Shadow we learned she was mean while still at Mercile which conflicted with the “nice Kit” of books 1-3. In Numbers, she was pretty understanding/sympathetic to Hero and added that she was in love, but he was killed which is why she’s so mixed up/broken inside, but this tidbit conflicts with the original fun loving Kit that wanted to mate with Justice. These are the types of details that drive me CRAZY, so I’d rather have Kit’s story put to bed, or Flame & Amanda’s or even Vengeance’s before Snow or Lash. Hell, what’s the deal with the angry Colorado no names that have been mentioned several times.?? Or added additional characters like Dagger, Bluebird, Book, Christmas, Dreamer, and Leo.
Also, there’s getting to be a ton of kids… Salvation, Forest, Noble, Kismet, Tiger’s nameless baby… plus Smiley & Mourn's mates are expecting…plus Jesse (Justice) & Candi (Hero) are trying. BUT we get zero info on them other than a random name drop occasionally which is frustrating, and how are they hiding all these kids when they let everyone visit/live there?? Missy, Paul, and his wife all live there, and they let all the family members visit. Do these kids ever get to leave the house?
