Shirl Rickman is a writer, a dreamer, and an optimist. A small town Texas girl currently residing in the San Francisco Bay Area with her beautifully blended family and their sweet, crazy dogs. When she's not dreaming up new love stories, Shirl can be found reading and drinking way too much coffee. She loves kindness, laughing and meeting her readers.

This was a fantastic read. The storyline was beautifully written. The main characters, Drake and Selene have both lost people in their lives that they loved. Their grief made them strong characters. Drake is the son of a mayor and an athlete. However, he is also a sweet guy who loved his little sister, Lacey very much. Selene was loved by her mother, but her father never wanted her. I thought her character went through so much pain, and to see her grief was sad. Also, I really loved how they met at the beginning. It was very awkward yet genuine, and then to see the friendship between them blossom into love was sweet. I loved every minute of the book. Especially the revelation near the end when we got a glimpse into Drake’s dad, Mayor Greg Thomas’s mind. I can’t wait to read more books by this author. Overall, an amazing read.
I really enjoyed this book! It's one of those books that gets to your heart. There is pain, heartache, and so much sadness. But there is also healing, laughter, and happiness. I loved Drake and Selene. I'm so glad I took their journey with them!
I will have to sit and write a proper review soon. But this was a very strong debut. The story was very good, heartbreaking but so good. Very well written.
Shirl Rickman has outdone herself with the debut novel, When Destinies Collide. The journey of Selene and Drake is warm, funny, heartbreaking and romantic all at the same time. The story pulled me in from the beginning and kept me wanted more with some interesting twist. Can not wait to read more from this talent writer.
Shirl Rickman debuts with a beautiful story of heartache, loss and love. I fell completely in love with Selene and Drake. Shirl takes us on their journey and it's an amazing ride. I felt all the feels. From start to finish, I couldn't put this book down. Congratulations on an amazing debut, Shirl. I can't wait to read your next book!
Shirl has given us a strong debut. I can't wait to see where her future works take us.
I would've rated higher but had a hard time personally connecting to the characters. Everyone reads a different book. Pick this one up, you'll be glad you did.
Shirl Rickman has a promising start with this debut novel. Selene and Drake are teenagers that come from different places but have both suffered loss and disappointments and have secrets that are threatening to destroy their very beings.
Selene is suffering from the loss of her mother, the only person that matters since she and her dad never seemed to bond. The story revolves around this loss and her growth as she begins to learn what it is like to live without her one constant in life. She is uprooted and taken to her great-aunt Violette in small town Texas. Her father just drops her off and runs away.
Drake is a boy that is dealing with his own demons. He has been dealt a blow of losing his twin sister less than a year ago. He is dealing with the emotional boomerang effect of abuse by someone that should love and protect him and his sister above all else. He has spent his whole life being the boy that draws attention in an attempt to remove that attention from his sister.
Drake and Selene are predestined to meet and help each other heal from their painful pasts and try to look forward. But, of course, destiny isn’t finished with them. They must continue through a year of twists and turns to get to their, hopefully, happy ending.

When Destinies Collide is an emotional story focusing on two broken people. It is an overwhelming journey through Drake and Selene's lives, watching them go from being at their worst, to building up to their best. The author does a wonderful job portraying the huge and critical character development without making it seem like the story dragged on.
Something I really loved about this book was the fact that though there was some form of "love at first sight," the characters... (more via website)
Sigh. I adore a good love story. I adore them even more when there is pain, heartache and real life involved. Shirl Rickman's debut novel has all that and more. I adored Drake and Selene and am so glad I took a journey with them. I loved how this book showed that it is possible to learn to live with tragedy in your life with the right people surrounding you. I am also a huge fan of the "star crossed lovers" theme and the fact that she mentioned my FAVORITE Colleen Hoover book just made me love it even more. What a great YA read. I love new developing relationships and the turmoil that can surrounded them and Ms. Rickman does an amazing job with the development of the story line and the characters. I just wanted to hug both Drake and Selene! Thanks for an amazing book!
Beautiful story of two teenagers who come together after each have suffered terrible losses. Selena and Drake have each lost the most important persons in their lives and are floundering. Each of them is struggling. At a time when they each need a lifeline, they find each other. The road is not easy but their story is even more powerful because of the roadblocks thrown in their way. This story will make you laugh, cry, love, and hope. It is a wonderful story and I definitely recommend.
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an hones review.
The first half of the book is boooooring, but the second half it's pretty amazing. I would have liked to know a little more of their story into the future. There are no loose ends and everything works out for the best. Good job for a new writer.
I knew nothing about this book when I picked it up. It was part of my reading challenge for 2015 & this one I picked based on the cover. Personally, even after I’ve read it, I still would have known I had to have it because of that cover. But then again, I am a sucker for stars/shooting stars so this cover completely stole my heart. Now that I’ve read it, I’m really glad it wasn’t a different story. Even though it took me quite a while to read because life got busy with school, I know it’s a good one because I still really liked it at the end.
The weird thing for me with this book is the fact that I was thinking more critically as I was reading. Maybe it’s because I knew nothing about the story when I started, but I think in my head this might have made more sense had they been slightly older. It makes sense as it is but the timeline to me seemed like it could have happened a bit later in their lives. That being said I still really liked the story as it was, weaving their lives together so intricately. I appreciated the backstory at the beginning instead of just referencing it to explain why they acted certain ways. I almost wish there was a middle ground where Selene & Drake were older but before tragedy hit. I wish I kinda got to experience their lives when they were “happiest” to really see how much they had to go through to get to the end of the story.
I really liked Selene & Drake despite wanting to shake them at times. There were times I just wanted them to get to moments faster but the progression they took together was lovely. The title & story fit together perfectly for them. I loved how intertwined their lives were even before they realized it. I thought they meshed well & they were able to use each other’s strength to grow. I’m glad that they were able to get through every challenge thrown their way. Granted, most books do have that kind of outcome where even after someone messes up, they can still work through whatever issues there are. I don’t think I’d ever want to come across a story that doesn’t follow that thinking because it would be too depressing. I was very pleased with this story considering I went in completely blind.
There's almost nothing that can't be solved by lemonade on a porch swing. Or at least made better. Throw in a cute boy and strolls by the river and you have solved the world's problems.
Selene needs to have some problems solved. She feels very alone. With good reason. She is alone. Her mom is gone. Her dad is absent and she has been sent to live with her elderly aunt. A really sweet aunt who makes lemonade. So maybe things will start to look up.
...security and comfort. Two things I have truly only felt with one other person in my life, and she is no longer here.
Drake has it all. Quarterback of the football team. Good looking. Son of the Mayor. He as it all. On the surface. But people don't know his private pain, only his public face. But the public doesn't know about his unexplained bruises and read-a-louds at the cemetery.
From the first moment I saw you, I had to know you. I never wanted to know everything about a person before, mainly because I don't want anyone to know me.
Drake and Selene have chemistry but no history. No trust. Neither has much experience with relationships, letting someone else in, being vulnerable. But they do have nights under the stars, picnics, hand holding in the hall and misunderstandings. Oh, and secrets. And guilt. So much guilt.
This is Shirl Rickman's first novel. And my first read of hers. This was a great YA read. She has given us a sweet story of first love, first doubt and 2 broken hearts who make each other whole. There are great side characters with lots of grit, sage advice and lemonade. Lots of lemonade.
First of all I would love to thank Shirl Rickman for giving me an ARC of When Destinies Collide! <3
This book was a great read! Fast paced, but not too fast. Great for the summer!
After the horrible accident that her Mama was in. Selene has just never been the same. She closed off herself. Not caring. But the one person who she had left didn't care for her at all, her dad. They never had that father-daughter relationship. So thats when one day Selene’s dad just dropped her off at her Aunt Violette's house. Her father no longer wanted her, and this was the end result. To live with Aunt Vi. Not that Selene didn't love Aunt Vi, she just wanted her dad to love her.
Not long after Selene moved in with Aunt Vi, she met this boy. She knew from the moment she laid eyes on him that she needed to meet him.
Drake just lost his twin sister. Coming up in a family where your father is the Mayor, you have to keep that appearance up. Well after Lacey, Drake’s twin sister, died he didn't know what to do. But he did know one thing. He was going to go to Violette’s house and continue what Lacey started, cleaning out Vi’s attic.
Selene & Drake don’t yet but when they find out. Both of their pasts will help the other heal, When Destinies Collide…..
Where can I start and not giveaway everything away?
I could tell you Selene is… No, that’s a spoiler.
Or maybe I could tell you about Drake’s… No, that might give a plot point away.
Fuck! There’s just no way to accurately convey what happens when Selene and Drake’s destinies collide without telling you the entire story because every detail of the story is so interwoven. At the beginning, both Selene and Drake are hurting from broken hearts. Slowly they open themselves up to each other through friendship built on an understanding of what each needs from the other and they begin to heal. Drake has always been the closed-off bad boy asshole in order to cover up the pain in his life, while Selene has been the shiny golden girl to hide the pain in hers. When they meet, Drake is struggling with the person he’s allowed himself to be and the person he wants to be. Selene has withdrawn from everyone to save herself further pain. Somehow the people they’re becoming finds a match with each other.
But when all the secrets are revealed, can a broken heart mended by love based on lies by omission be strong enough to withstand the assault of someone determined to inflict pain and suffering? That’s the question when destinies collide asks of Selene and Drake.
This book was phenomenal!! Wow. I loved this story, and the suspense of love and life that came, was told beautifully. Even though this is young love, it was still real and magical. You need that one person to get you through your life, sometimes you have more than one, but Selene and Drake needed one another to see what they truly had. Loss and pain are a part of life, but true love is the reason and meaning behind forgiveness and life. What a tremendous book.
I'm not even sure how to put how I feel about this book into words. It was nothing like I expected. It was a thousand times more. This is a sweet and beautiful story of trust, chance and hope. You'll instantly fall in love with Drake and Selene. The things you learn about the two of them as individuals will break your heart. And the things you learn about their destiny together will blow you away. This book is definitely going into my re-read stack. I can't wait to read more by this author.
When Destinies Collide is a beautiful story of hope and pain, love and sorrow, acceptance and understanding. This book made me laugh and it made me cry, but most of all, it made me root for Selene and Drake to find their way out of sorrow and into love. It's a wonderful story about the power of love. Can't wait for Shirl Rickman's next offering!
Wow! Would have never guessed this was a debut novel. It was absolutely wonderful. I was hooked from the beginning and stayed hooked through the entire story! I absolutely loved it and fell in love with Drake & Selene. I had so many feels reading this! I definitely recommend this and can't wait to read more from Shirl!
This is actually the worst case of insta-love I have ever read.
The story is told from alternating perspectives of the main characters. Both of them practically fell in love at first sight, and have this intense feeling that they need to know each other.
Basically, it made me figuratively gag. I just couldn't read on.
Loved this read! This one definitely took me by surprise. There were a few unexpected twists and parts that went a deeper than a surface level romance and I loved that, but above all else it was an epic love story. I loved every second!
I'm a fan of Shirl Rickman, so whenever I see a sign up for her, I rush to do just that. And lo and behold, I NEVER knew that When Destinies Collide was her debut book, it was that great! This is the journey of Selene & Drake, which ticked off all the boxes for a 5 star rating in my eyes. First of all, I was instantly catapulted in their world from the very beginning, while imprinting on both the hero & heroine instantly, not to mention an entertaining cast of secondaries only added to the fabulousness. Perfectly placed humor kept me laughing, while the warm & fuzzy feels made appearances in me. Add in the insane angst levels that were heart wrenching, and romantic at the same time, with a dash of f-bomb worthy twists, well, I can't type enough fan girl gushing about this story! Shirl Rickman is a talented author that showed me that no matter what she writes about, it will be awesome, and I'm very addicted. Like I said, I was shocked that this was her debut, as I would have never guessed on my own. I CANNOT WAIT to read more by her, and HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!
I picked this book up at the library and I decided to read it because the particular copy that I picked up was signed by the author. "One love... One heart... One destiny.."-Bob Marley signed Shirl Rickman. So just because of that I checked it out and brought it home. I was a little discouraged when I got home and looked it up on Good reads and saw that it only had about 89 reviews. However, once I started to read it... I was pleasantly surprised! Selene and Drake form a magic and healing type of love. Selene moves to the small town after her mother dies and her father literally dumps her off at her aunts house. The girl is mourning and devastated because her unloving-father could not possibly care any less for her. Drake is in a really bad place too because his twin sister recently died and his parents are abusive and hateful towards him. Well with all that between the two, they find a lot in common and a lot of comfort in each other. I really enjoyed this book because Shirl Rickman actually had a captivating story to tell. Unlike so many young adult books, there was a point and she didn't use the typical sec scenes or other popular inappropriate things to get her message across. There is a steady use of profanity throughout the book. There are two sex scenes that are not explicit and they are about a paragraph each, can be easily skipped through.
Shirl Rickman did a great job with her debut novel. It's a good love story. Sweet and easy to read, with twists and turns. Although I did enjoy reading it, there were a few things that bothered me; I would have wanted to know more about Drake. It would have had been even more intens. The "friends/more-than-friends" part did drag a bit. More détails on their time appart, on their way of coping at home or at school would have been appreciated. And it's as if all fell into place in a short time. The ending was kind of rushed for me.
All that said I think she did a great job because it is, after all, her first novel. And I believe you've got to have the guts to start one.
I absolutely loved this book. So many feels, it was like a roller coaster of emotions. One minute I'm smiling and laughing and the next minute my heart is breaking. I loved the main characters Drake and Selene - what a journey they took together and I loved how it all ended up! Great debut, can't wait to read Shirl's next book!
Shirl is a friend of mine, and one of the most positive, and happy person you can ever meet. There is no surprise that she would become an author, and that she would write a great story - even then, still I couldn't believe she had written such a good first book! If you haven't read it, give it a read, its a very cute romance...
