Say goodbye to stiff, stilted 7-heads-tall figure drawings and gesture drawings that look like loose, stringy messes! In this book, Samantha Youssef lays out the approach to figure drawing she developed over years as a character animator at Disney and instructor to artists at studios such as BioWare and Ubisoft. The central concept is the Progressive Drawing Method, a step-by-step approach to figure drawing that takes you from 5 second gesture sketches to polished drawing completed over longer periods. Just as important as the mechanics of how to draw, the book shows you how to see the energy in the poses you are trying to capture. This is an amazing resource that I will be returning to again and again!

I graduated from art college and work in the illustration industry. I am also a figure drawing instructor at the college level. I own many instructional art books, Loomis, Bammes, Vilppu, Hale, among others. Nothing I have read compares to the lessons in this book. This is the best book on understanding how to approach figure drawing I have come across. There is a wealth of information and it is broken down in a clear and well thought out way. A must read for any artist, student or professional!

I was holding back on writing a review so I could test the book concepts on a regular basis before making a judgment.

As a mostly self-taught artist, it has been a struggle to learn things without immediate feedback and guidance. Figure drawing, in particular, has always been frustrating. I loved drawing portraits but anything beyond the shoulders tended to turn out stiff and elongated. I've tried many other figure drawing books, tutorials and videos in the past but with little improvement.

That said, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn or improve in figure drawing. I would go as far as say that it's the only instructional book you'll ever need when you're starting out. I say this because this is pretty much the only one I've read that triggered a vivid understanding of gesture and form that translated immediately to skill.

With others the struggle for anatomical correctness lead to more stiffness while the attempt to make fluid gestures lead to distortion. This book certainly hit a sweet spot that marries the two.

I'm not saying it's going go teach you drawing in a few days. I haven't mastered the progressive drawing method outlined here and I still have much to learn about human anatomy. But I can't help but notice the vast improvement in the way I draw people. My poses are now more fluid and real-looking than when I started. I still go back to this book often to recheck my skill and I find that I still learn something new each time. I have no doubt that practicing the method in this book for several more months will improve my figure drawings further.

I'm glad I backed the Kickstarter for this book when I did and I'm looking forward to the next book in the syllabus.
