After months trapped inside Parallax, subjected to experiments designed to test the limits of what he could survive, Zax escapes the cage that was never supposed to open. He should be thinking about freedom. About finding Micah, Comet, and the people he spent every day believing he might never see again.
Instead, Zax discovers they already found him.
Or at least, they thought they did.
While Zax remained imprisoned, another subject walked out of Parallax wearing his face. Now the people Zax loves are forced to confront an impossible truth, and the man they rescued must face one of his looking like Zax does not make him Zax.
But escaping the laboratory does not mean Zax escaped what happened inside it. Months of confinement, experimentation, pain, and isolation have left wounds even his body cannot heal. The man who comes home is fighting to remember how to live without a cage, how to trust his own mind again, and whether he can ever become the person he was before Parallax took him.
Worse, something inside Zax is becoming harder to contain. The violent instincts he once feared are no longer disappearing as easily as they once did, and learning to control them may be his only chance at reclaiming the life he lost. Because the closer Zax gets to the people he loves, the more dangerous losing himself becomes.
And as the Echelon Government begins hunting what Parallax allowed to escape, Zax is running out of time to decide whether the thing inside him is something he must destroy or something he must learn to live with.
For Zax, coming home was supposed to be the end.
Instead, he returns to a life that changed without him, a mind still trapped in places his body escaped, and a version of himself he is no longer certain he can control.
He spent years believing he was someone else’s copy.
Now he has to prove that a copy can still be an original.
