The cross is an historical event that can bring us to heaven… And a current event bringing heaven to bear on us In The Power of the Cross, Tony Evans applies Christ’s work to life today. In three parts, he systematically and pastorally explains three aspects of the We wear crosses around our necks, but do we apply it to our lives? Jesus’ work holds incredible power for us. It’s time we embrace it, for God’s glory and our joy. Read The Power of the Cross to find out how.

To carry your cross, is a moment by moment connection to, and ongoing identification with Christ (1 Cor. 15:31), and the purpose of his life, death, and resurrection. It is acknowledgement of complete and total dependency on Christ and his sufficiency, along with recognition of personal sin. The key element of sin is always separation. This is why Jesus had to die, because sin is so pervasive and corrupting that nothing short of his death could eradicate it. At the heart of sin is independence from God, to do things our own way. It’s rebellion. We don’t want to be answerable to Him (Rom. 1) Imagine two travelers missing their flight at the airport, whether 5 minutes of 45 minutes, if you miss a flight, it’s gone. We all fall short of God’s standard when we sin, no matter. When we believe in Jesus, we get connected to his resurrection life in the same way we were plugged into death with Adam. Therefore, if you have sin in your life that is overcoming you, it is because we have adopted faulty thinking. Living as if Christ’s resurrection life within us is theoretical and not real. Learn to identify with your new life in Christ, not your old life in Adam. It’s a matter of defeat and victory. Think: I am not who I used to be, so I don’t have to act like I used to act. We need the cross based on the holiness of God, the law and our inabilityy to keep it, and the pervasiveness of our sin. The word holy means to be in a class by itself. If we fail to have victory in our life, it’s because there can be no resurrection without a crucifixion. You can’t get the miracle without the surrender. You were bought with a price, you exist for Christ, not your self. If you live for your self, all that the cross [and God] has to offer will not be yours. When Christ is made manifest in the believer’s life, the believer begins to function supernaturally. They have access to the abundant life promised by abiding in Christ. What keeps Jesus from being manifested in your life? It happens when you do not die daily to your self, and are crucified with him on a regular basis. Satan coms at us with lies of defeat about our identity. Jesus wants you to know that there are no bullets in that gun. Satan was disarmed at calvary and no longer has the last word because Jesus Christ sits above all rule and authority, and we are seated with him. We will have problems. But if you fix your eyes on Jesus, he will place you above your circumstances, rather than under them. Victory comes when we begin to praise him. (1 Cor. 11:26) In taking communion, you are proclaiming something (speaking/preaching for others to see/hear). You are preaching your own sermon on the totality of Christ’s death. At that moment, you are the preacher, you are the one proclaiming to observers the greatness of Christ’s sacrifice, and to Satan and his demons that your victory is secured (1 Peter 3:19, Col. 2:13-15) (Rom. 8:28) God’s purpose for you is that everything that happens in your life is designed to make you look like Jesus Christ. The good, bad, the ugly. We should ask, God, how do you want to use this to conform me more to the image of Christ?
This book looked at how properly understanding what Jesus Christ did on the cross brings transformation to your life. The author started by talking about Christ and what makes him unique. He then talked about what Christ accomplished on the cross (and in his resurrection) and how this impacts how we live our life. He then talked about how understanding these things brings powerful transformation to our lives. The author was easy to understand, and he used good analogies to help the reader to understand his points. I know some people will say that what he is teaching here is basic Christianity, but I agree with the author that many Christians don't seem to fully understand it yet. Therefore, I would highly recommend this book to any Christian. Even if you already understand, it never hurts to be reminded of these powerful, basic principles of Christianity.
I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through Amazon Vine.
This was a powerful book outlining the power of the Cross.
Since I read this book just before Easter, during Holy Week it brought the meaning and reason God sent His one and only Son to die on the cross for our sins, so that through our faith we are blessed with eternal life with God. Our whole existence is dependant on the Cross.
Tony Evans words on the back of the book - "We need a right view of the cross. It is both a historical event that can take us to heaven, and a current event that can bring heaven to bear on earth".
Some people have a problem with Jesus’ human nature because they assume if He was human, he had to be sinful. Not when the Holy Spirit oversees the birth process. We have already noted that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, bypassing the simple human nature of Joseph as the father. The same objection is raised about the Bible if human beings wrote the Bible, the argument goes, it must have errors in it. That might be true except for one thing; the Holy Spirit oversaw the writing of Scripture to preserve it from error (2 Peter 1:21)
Such a great book! This book is one that one should have in their arsenal (especially if you are a preacher, bible teacher, or just a lover of the Word of God). This is a great tool to have and use when preparing sermons about the Cross, Easter, the Passover, or even applying it to the everyday believer's life.
Sinners don't understand the cross because if they did, they would run to it. Many saints don't appreciate it because if they did, they would live differently in light of it. They often fail to fully apply and appreciate its practical relevancy.
Tony Evans is a great communicator and passionate about sharing the Good news of the Gospel. How does understanding the implications of the cross make a difference in our walk and coming to know Christ? These and more are answered in this study of the cross.
The book is set up in 3 parts. The Person of the Cross, The Purpose of the Cross and the Power of the Cross. Each part is a progression of understanding the implication of the cross and keeps our eye on the Christ and not on our selves. Tony Evans takes a story and shows us Christ. One such story of a football team failing and the coach reminding his team about what matters. This is a football. Tony Evans takes the cross as the fundamental of the Christian faith. He reminds us that there is so much to miss when we do not consider the cross.
Some of my favorite quotes are the following:
Unity is oneness of purpose. The purpose of the unity achieved at the cross was so that the world may know that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.
God didn't give the Ten Commandments so that you can keep them. He gave the Ten Commandments to reveal to each of us how often we break them.
When Communion is treated with the reverence, intensity, and intimacy that the significance of its covenant entails, the practice of it will uniquely connect us to accomplishments' of Christ's covenantal death and resurrection.
What then is legalism? Legalism is that system of rules and regulations that govern and define your identity and spiritual living entirely on your performance. It makes keeping the rules the basis of your spiritual victory. It says, "You are what you do".
For whenever the awareness of our sinfulness is diminished, the cross gets lost. Its brilliance gets lost and therefore, its effectiveness and power get lost. It also loses its power in our daily lives. Through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we are made pure.
Not wearing the cross as jewelry but embracing the cross where we have been redeemed by Christ is where transformation takes place. Where we are faced of the tremendous cost and love that God has for us. Where love and mercy meet.
A Special Thank you to Moody Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
In The Power of the Cross, Tony Evans explored how the cross is the centerpiece of everything in a person’s life and how we need to understand how much God loves us. It’s important to have a relationship with Christ and not just a religion. Tony Evans reminded readers that we have to carry our own cross like Luke 14:27 instructs us to do. The book begins by looking at who Christ is and His true identity. He also shared how powerful the blood and sacrifice Jesus dying on the cross for our countless sins was. Next, he explored the power of the cross and how we was able to be delivered from the gates of Hell and how we can live in victory. Tony Evans also revealed how we can have stability no matter what is going on around us. This chapter was so eye opening when you take into consideration that this was written in 2015 way before the world has begun to crumble even more.
I would recommend this life changing book to anyone who is wondering about Jesus and His power and they are desperately seeking a deeper relationship with Him. This book would be especially helpful to a new believer. In reading this book, I was reminded that I’m a part of Jesus’ covenant and I learned about the passage found in Hebrews 12. This one discussed how God will shake the Earth and Heaven with His voice and when does this, He is speaking. This showed me the importance of listening to His voice and doing His will for my life and making sure I’m drawing closer to Him through whatever may be happening. This taught me that I must make sure my foundation is secure in Christ. This is a very timely reading and it will benefit readers in learning about the power of the cross and who our identity is in Christ.

Clear exegesis of what the death of Jesus accomplished one and for all. As he states, "We need a right view of the cross. It is both a historical event that can take us to heaven, and a current event that can bring heaven to bear on earth."
