Kathleen grew up in the south-western suburbs of Sydney, where family holidays by the beach and tormenting her two younger brothers, was how she spent her early years. But at the young age of 11, when she submitted a short story to a talented writing competition through the NSW schools program, not only did she win it, but she quickly found a love for it as well.
Throughout her schooling, writing was a hobby, along with sketching and various sports. But fast forward to her adult years when she moved to Europe to follow her husbands field hockey dream, and her love for writing surged to the surface. Her debut story, Cut, was penned over two years where her hobby seemed to lead to the completion of Pennys' world. The rest of the series came the following year.
Kathleen enjoys writing stories full of self-discovery, emotional journeys and of course, love. Something else she loves is hearing from her readers, so feel free to follow her blog or drop her an email.
WHAT. JUST. HAPPENED. I get an email from Kathleen Mareé about a book she wrote that I might be interested in. So I do my normal goodreads search, read the synopsis and think to myself, "why not...?" I receive the book, start and seriously did not stop reading it until I was finished and oh boy was that one hell of a cliffhanger.
Australian born Penelope is suffering from a broken heart. Her 10 year relationship with her ex came to a sudden halt and she is struggling to figure out how to move on. When I first read this I thought to myself.. "SNAP OUT OF IT LADY!" but the more I thought about her pain, how its not just a man she lost but a whole life with him, a future she thought was sure, I understood. Her BFF Rosie convinces her to go out with her brother's friends to a club and that's where everything changes. Read more
Penelope Price had her world shattered at the front door. Utterly broken, she goes into basically a "living coma" for several months. Thankfully her best friend/roommate Rosalie keeps her from completely succumbing to her grief. When she finally decides to leave the house and join the land of the living, she and Rosie hit a trendy nightclub in Sydney. Here Penny encounters Jay, the soulful musician playing the VIP room she and her friends are occupying. He is mysterious and cold, but there is something about him that draws Penny in - and he feels the same way. Penny is certainly NOT ready for any sort of relationship but Jay is quietly relentless and she is unable to say no. Penny and Jay are working their way, albeit very timidly, into getting to know each other when the unthinkable happens. Evan-the-ex shows up, claiming to want to come clean and win Penny back. Can she forgive Evan? What about Jay? ARRRGGGHHHH. This book had me on absolute pins and needles most of the time, but in a good way. It sucked me in from the first few pages and kept me entrenched. A very, VERY good story; i can hardly believe this is Kathleen Maree's first work.
What I liked:
ALL the details. The author was extremely descriptive about the main characters, both their physical attributes and their emotive states. I appreciate that in a book. I felt very connected to Penny, Jay and Rosie throughout the story and even got a good feel for the secondary characters.
The twists. Without giving up spoilers, there were a couple of things that absolutely threw me for a loop. I read a lot and consider myself somewhat hard to surprise, but GOOD GRIEF - at several points I was left mouth gaping in utter shock.
The flow. Im not sure how to say this any other way than this book was really beautifully written. It was very smooth and almost.. artistic?
What would I change? NOTHING. Honestly, its a 5 star book all the way around for me. My reading tastes generally fall into romance/erotica and this book was a bit different from what I normally choose for myself. That being said, I couldnt have enjoyed it more. It was not just a story that I could pick up, read a few chapters and come back for more later. It was very engrossing and really kept me glued to the kindle for HOURS.
Kathleen Maree has, in my opinion, enormous talent as an author. I feel very privileged that she asked me to read/review this book for her and I am definitely looking forward to more of her works.
I give CUT 5*****wickedgoodstars and will be happily recommending it!- asw
I would like to start this review by saying thank you to Kathleen Maree for giving me the opportunity to read Cut before its official release.
Cut is the debut novel from Kathleen Maree, and the first in the series. I loved this book. I was sucked in right from the beginning, and didn’t want to put it down. The book was easy to read and the storyline was compelling. The story is told from Penelope’s point of view and follows her journey as she tries to move on from heartbreak. As I read the book, I became so attached to the characters that I felt like I could feel their emotions. Jay’s mysteriousness made me want to get inside of his head and figure out what he was thinking. I loved getting to see Penelope grow as she dealt with her heartbreak and began to move forward with her life. There were some parts of this book that even made me cry, but I see that as a good thing because that means I connected with the characters on a very personal level.
I cannot wait for Battlescars to come out, so I can see how Penelope’s story continues. I can already tell that Kathleen Maree is going to me one of my favorite authors.
I love books and read a lot week in and out. When given the chance to read Cut prior to its official release I was very excited. This is the debut novel for author Kathleen Maree and she has done a wonderful job of bringing to life the story of Penelope, Jay and Evan. Her writing style is easy to read, descriptive and captures your attention from the first chapter. Unlike a lot of romance/chick lit type books Cut made me actually feel the heartache of the main characters and the twists and turns within the story. It had me wishing book 2 was finished for me to read immediately after I completed Cut. A perfect read if you enjoy romance novels that aren't cookie cut boy meets girl falls in love and lives happily ever after. Cut draws you in, makes you relate to the characters and brings a genuine love and appeal for them all, though I'm team Jay all the way.
Kathleen is definitely an author to put in your favorites list and I plan on following her bright future.
I really loved this book! It was so intense and enjoyable to read. Kathleen's style of writing is addictive and I'll be eagerly awaiting book 2. Just read it.
Okay before i get into this review i want to say a humongous THANKYOU to Kathleen for emailing me and asking for me to read and review Cut. After i received the email i jumped onto Goodread's (as you do) and checked out the synopsis and other people's reviews. It was then i couldn't say no i was hooked and had to start reading immediately,
This was Kathleen's debut novel, let me tell you you wouldn't even know. You seriously would think this was her 100th book.
The story is about Penelope Price and her shattered heart. After her partner of 10 years Evan admits to infidelity Penny leave immediately and spends the next three moths in a 'living coma' in the spare room of her best-friend Rosalie's terrace home. After months of being confined to her bed Penelope finally agrees to going out to a trendy Sydney nightclub with Rosalie.
This where i couldn't put the book down, when American Jay Ryker lead singer of The Cray is introduced. Penny and Jay meet in the club. Jay feels the need to save this innocent, sad, shy beautiful girl from an annoyingly awkward situation. Penny finds Jay instantly dangerous, mysterious and cold, but can not help feel drawn to him and his exquisite blue eyes that see's right into her soul. Jay is drawn to the refreshing fact that Penny had no clue who he is and how different and mysteriously closed of she is to all the other girls he is used to.
Penny is definitely not ready for a relationship but our gorgeous rocker is very subtlety relentless and she is unable to deny him. Spending a few hours together over the few days that Jay is in Australia they try to get to know each other at a very slow pace. A few fast exits from Penny, a trip to LA and Evan returning into the picture to win her back and come clean giving her the answers she has wanted, will she forgive him? What about Jay? Who is the person who betrays her the most? Im not going to spoil it for you, so you'll have to read and discover what happens yourselves :)
It was about halfway through chapter two i started to get really into Cut, once i did i didn't want to leave. On my breaks at work, before bed, even during the ad breaks when i was watching TV. The characters are so likable and realistic. You feel connected to them and feel part of the book. I was even starting to feel sorry for Evan, WTF?? TEAM JAY all the way!! The story flows amazingly. There was no jumping from major event to the next, you went on the journey with the characters and lived their days with them, read their every thought and felt the emotions they did. Im still at this minute wanting to get inside Jay's head and find out about his past that made him the way he is now. What he thinks about when he gets closed of behind those dark aviators.
Being Kathleen's first book is absolutely amazing! You are such a majorly talented superb author. I feel so privileged to have you email lil ol' me. I would be honored to have you contact me for further reviews any time :)
First impression The book started rather out like this strange story. I don’t really know how to put it, but I wasn’t exactly with it 100% in the beginning. But then it all became clearer. Everything is one big mystery, even at the ending of the book I was still wondering what had happened to her. It had to be serious. Jay is famous but he doesn’t act on it, and he seems more down to earth than any other male leading character from any other book.
Character development Jay: He’s famous. He’s beautiful and he wants her. He doesn’t really know how to handle, but he actually tries so much. I think it’s lovely to read how hard he tries. Penelope: She is kind of hopeless. I didn’t really like her POV that much because she seemed to be overreacting all the time. That’s probably because we didn’t really knew what had happened with her and Evan, but even at the ending we really didn’t know. I think I would’ve liked his POV better. He was much more appealing as a person.
Title: She has been cut, but how? We know she got her and Evan has to do something with it. But I want to know exactly happened. This wasn’t really all that clear.
Cover: I didn’t like the cover that much. It seemed a bit amateuristic. I don’t want to be this harsh, but I think that the next books will explain all this doubt I’m having with this book.
Storyline and thoughts: The book starts with her not finding her way in her new life. She has been obviously hurt, but we don’t really know what happened. But I think the writer fixed it very well with putting Evan in the book starting from the second half. Jay was a much better character than Penelope was. But that’s probably just my opinion.
Next, they meet, she doesn’t know how to handle herself when he is near. But he doesn’t give in. He knows she got hurt, but he’ll still do anything for her. And that’s what I loved about Jay. He isn’t from Australia; he has to go back to LA but that doesn’t mean he wants to give up on her. He gives her tickets to come after him. She goes. And then their story really begins. But before her trip to Jay she was still doubting of talking to Evan. Would she take him back or would it really be closure?
Honestly; I think this story was way too sad. There almost wasn’t a really happy moment in it. She’s constantly crying and sobbing…. I need his side of the story and a happy ending. And why is she hanging out with Evan again? I do not understand this at all… He still hurt her!
I’m giving this book three stars, because although I had a lot of complaints, I still liked it very much! It was an easy and quick read, not heavy at all. But there still was story. I think it’s safe to say that I will read the next couple of books.
*I received a ARC in exchange for a honest review* This is a story filled with betrayal, depression, sexual tension, lost love, and mystery. Kathleen did a great job at teasing the reader with bits of information sprinkled throughout the story. Just enough to whet your appetite but still leave you craving more. I usually prefer a love story with more steam but the story line kept me so intrigued that I didn't even miss it. It took a little while at first for me to become absorbed into the story but once it got started, I couldn't put it down. Penelope and Jay were bewildering, hot, and mysterious. The story was told from Penelope's point of view leaving me on the edge of the seat wanting to know what Jay was thinking until the end of the book when Kathleen gives the reader a glimpse into the mind of Jay.
Since Penelope's heart was wounded by the infidelity of her ex, she has locked herself in her room and her mind. She has spent the last few months just existing and not really living. That is until her friend Rosie drags her to a night club and she meets the broody, delicious looking, musician Jay. She is broken and damaged and the last thing she wants is the attention of a rock star, especially when he won't be sticking around. When Penelope was first introduced, I found her to be whiny and pathetic. As the story progresses my opinion shifts and I start to feel sympathy and pity for everything she has gone through. By the end of the story, I was impressed with Penelope's new found strength and I admired how she didn't lay down in defeat instead she began to believe in her own self worth. Jay is a package of raw sexiness. At times he was so sweet and gentle with Penny while at other times he was closed off and cold. His character is sensual, mysterious, and often times took me by complete surprise. I found myself frustrated with Jay's abrupt behavior while the next minute I was falling for him with his kind gestures towards Penny.
Penelope and Jay were an enigma and I cannot wait to read the conclusion of the story. When the story ended, I was left with many more questions than answers. I am impatient to read the next one so that more answers can be unveiled. I highly recommend for a entertaining, tension filled read that leaves you twisted in knots and ready for the next book.
Cut is the debut novel from Kathleen Maree’ but you wouldn’t know this from reading the book. Kathleen writes in such a way that I got lost in the story, I could feel Penelope’s pain, Its one of those books where you forget you’re actually reading and just get lost in the story.
Cut is written in Penelope’s point of view and she describes what she is feeling every step of the way so you don’t have to play the guessing game. Jay on the other hand has secrets he is keeping and struggles to slowly let Penelope in but they do build a strong and intense connection in such a short amount of time. They are drawn to each other from the moment they meet.
“But for some unknown reason my body is drawn to him. The nervousness, the danger in the air, all of it speaks its own language to me that my brain doesn’t understand”
“He never reveals anymore than he has to most of the time. But sometimes, just sometimes he lets me inch further into his soul.”
I love the fact the story is set in Australia! Its so rare to read a book where I actually know the names of the places mentioned – Just had to mention this as I did get really excited.
Penelope isn’t the type of girl Jay is used to; She doesn’t just fall at his feet because of who he is.
“I’m not a one night stand kind of girl Jay.” “I know,” is all he whispers
The story starts to get more complicated when her Ex Boyfriend makes a return and more secrets are revealed and then the book ends with a HUGE cliffhanger!
I need the next book – not want it, I need it. I think that defines a good book by just how much I want to read more.
Just trust me and read it
My Rating: 4 & ½ Stars
Battlescars (Cut #2) is set to be released early 2016 – So hopefully I won’t have to wait for answers for too long!
Cut is an eventful story about a young woman, Penelope, whose life is in somewhat of a whirlwind of men, love, heart-break, relationships, depression, friendships, opportunity, emotions, challenges, decision-making.... circumstances we have all been in before. Just as the reader can understand; you just don't know what life is going to throw at you!
I enjoyed the way Kathleen Maree uses a writing technique where the character's internal dialogue is revealed often throughout the novel. It gives the reader an insight into the character's thoughts and encourages character development; something Kathleen has managed to build within the story very well.
Being Australian myself, I appreciated the links to my home city, Sydney and was able to feel like I was right there in the story. The story then takes the reader internationally, in addition to Australia, providing a diverse setting and location.
All in all the novel was an engaging and enjoyable read. I eagerly await the release of the second book, as the first book left me asking questions and pondering over possibilities. This unpredictability keeps the reader guessing and brings an element of surprise. Bring on #2!
Cut is a book about broken hearts, betrayal of friends and depression. Penelope had been in a relationship and was looking forward to spending the rest of her life with Evan. Then she learns of him not being faithful. She is heart broken and goes through months of depression.
Her best friend who is also her roommate, Rosie takes care of her in a motherly way as she deals with her broken heart. Rosie finally gets Penelope out of the house and goes to a night club where Penelope meets Jay. Jay is the musician playing at the night club. Jay is good looking and mysterious, they are drawn to one another.
As time goes by, Jay and Penelope spend more time together. Jay is sweet at times but then turns cold towards her. Then her ex comes back into the picture and we learn truths I would never want to experience.
I'm excited for the next book as I was left wanting to know so much. I strongly recommend this book to anyone looking a great read. Who will Penelope end up with, why is Jay so closed off and what happened...
•• I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ••
I feel so incredibly honoured to have read this debut novel. This story follows newly heartbroken Penelope Price who does not know how to move on with her life after the shock separation from her decade long partner Evan. With the help of her best friend Rosie, she finally emerges from her bed to have a night out at a local club, where she meets Jay, a complicated musician. Despite her instant attraction to Jay Penelope is far from ready for a new relationship and does not think her broken heart will ever be healed. I really enjoyed this book, having a main character who was likeable and relatable, because who hasn't had their heart broken at least once. This story really tugged at my heart and sent me through many different emotions throughout. It was unpredictable, suspenseful and had me captivated from the very beginning. I was disappointed when it ended and it left me thinking about it for the rest of the day. I cannot wait for the next one. I'm sure Cut will be the first successful book of many by this very talented Author.
Was given an ARC for an honest review. I have read a few books that take place in Australia and all of them were decent. I have grown to understand some of the lingo and jargon that the author's use. So if you are from the states and are looking for a true Aussie dialogue such as: 'kerb' instead of 'curb' and 'arse' instead of 'ass' - this is your book.
The writing wasn't bad at all. It was pretty polished, with few over all errors. The word choice was clean. My only negative was the constant elaboration with detail. I like using my imagination for somethings - i.e.: the way a room may look; what type of blonde or brown colored hair they may have; the play-by-play of a morning routine. Some of these things are not in need of extreme detail. I believe readers enjoy thinking what they may about certain places or situations.
I have received this book in exchange of an honest review. I have thoroughly enjoyed this story and thought it was very interesting and different from most romances. I didn’t like Penelope that much in the beginning of the story but she grew on me as the story went on and we found out more about her and her past. I thought the romance was well-written and developed nicely. After being hurt so badly it couldn’t be easy for Penelope to open up to new experiences and opportunities and the author did a great job portraying that. I cannot wait for the next book so I can find out what will happen with Penelope and Jay. If you enjoy a good romance, you might enjoy this book.
WOW! I always try to figure out the ending before I get to it and I have to say this one blew me away. I was left with my mouth hanging open. Penny is heartbroken over a lying cheated rat, while a rock star wants to put her back together. I thought I knew who I wanted her to be with but I changed my mind constantly. You need to read it for yourself. You will see what I mean. A very very compelling story!
I hope you enjoy Penny's emotional ride of self-discovery where she will search for the strength in amongst her sadness, a new direction after the detour, and the possibility of trusting her broken heart in new (and seemingly) dangerous hands...
What a great story. It drew me in from the very first page. I really connected with Penelope. Everything she felt I felt. This story just felt so real. 5+ stars all the way. Now I'm going to start on book #2!
Wow I loved this book- was intrigued and captivated from the start. I loved how descriptive it was, I felt like I was in the story. What an ending! Cannot wait for book #2.
Cut is such an emotionally raw story that is very real for myself and I'm sure for everyone who has ever had their hearts broken!! I loved it and look forward to following the story on with the rest of the series!!
After being betrayed by her longtime boyfriend Evan, Penelope moves in with her best friend Rosie as she struggles with heartbreak and depression. Penelope is losing in the fight to put the pieces of her life back together. When Rosie drags her out for a night on the town, she meets the mysterious and sexy rocker, Jay Ryker. This brooding bad boy is instantly attracted to Penny and she can't find the will to resist his charm.
After spending a few days with Jay, Penny grows more and more confused about her growing feelings for Jay and her unresolved feelings for Evan. A trip to visit Jay in L.A. leaves Penny more confused than ever. Then Evan resurfaces, revealing a shocking truth, and Penny finds herself once again cut from the striking wounds of betrayal.
The title of this book takes on so many meanings. Penny is cut from Evan's betrayal. cut off from her friends after the demise of their relationship and cut once again by Jay's behavior. And "cut" takes an entirely new meaning as climactic ending unfolds.
I liked this story but at times, I felt that the plot was confusing. I spent most of the time waiting for Jay to be revealed as a vampire. What was with all of the references to his cold breath and his touch?? There were also quite a few typos and grammatical errors that were a bit distracting. But with the plot twists in the book that ending...I am definitely looking forward to the next book where hopefully a lot of my questions about the plot and the dramatic ending will be answered!
Genre– New Adult Romance Steamy?– No Cliffhanger?– Yes Can be read as Standalone?– If you don’t care what happens next like myself. Rating– 2 out of 5 Stars
***COMPLIMENTARY COPY PROVIDED IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW***
This book lived up to its name as it cut deep because it was painful! The writing wasn't too bad (which is why I didn't give it a 1-star rating) but the character development and direction was terrible. Not to mention the scenes and story dragged on and on… I swore more pages were added the longer I read. I felt NO chemistry between the MCs. Penny had absolutely no redeeming qualities. We've all had soul-crushing heartbreak where you didn't think you'd survive. But for most of us, the rest of our lives didn't stop. This girl stopped working, socializing, eating, breathing, talking and everything else that one does to survive… for MONTHS. Her depression was a bit over done for me. Jay was so one dimensional and he was schizophrenic! Talking one minute, not talking the next. And I didn’t find him mysterious… I found him to be creepy and an asshole. I don't know what P saw in him. And her whole trip to LA was a disaster. I would've been done with him after the FIRST time he ditched me. But yet she’s still smitten….
I don't want to give the story away - I'll just say that it just doesn't do it for me.
Penelope is a mess. She has been seriously depressed for the past three months, following a break-up with her long term boyfriend, Evan. She has basically been living the life of a hermit, barely communicating with the outside world. The only person she sees, is her best friend, Rosie. She is the one who took her in when her world fell apart. One night, she actually manages to convince her to come out with her, and that is when she meets Jay Ryker. He is intense and moody, and takes an interest in Penelope, something that she can't quite understand. After one of their encounters, she is left feeling confused and frustrated. That is when she discovers the truth behind her break-up with Evan and once again her world crashes down around her.
So, I have to say that at first I found it a little hard to get into as I didn't really 'get' Penelope, as she was pretty hopeless, but I guess everyone deals with break-ups in their own way. Once Jay was introduced to the story, I found it a lot more compelling to read. His character is a mystery, I'm still trying to figure him out. And the ending! Well, that just left me desperate to get the next book in the series!
Slow build but displayed the heroines depressive emotional state well, which builds into the story and her development. Cant wait to see where this story goes in book two!
omg to think I ran up on this author's work by accident and boy I'm glad I did. Cut gives us Penelope's story an inside to her heartbreak and why we love her so much and Jay. These characters became real to me felt every pain and she'd every tear with them. loving this book and looking forward to reading more from this author.
