For the most part, I liked Pretty Happy, which focuses on how you feel, more so than what you eat, although it'd be a blatant lie to say one does not impact the other. Note: this is not a dieting or weight loss book but it does incorporate tips and suggestions for eating better, and clean eating, like choosing healthier foods and how to restore nutritional balance.

The book focuses on Four Pillars:
1. Cultivate an Intuitive Relationship with Your Body
2. Eat Well
3. Awaken Your Body
4. The Miracle of Mindfulness

I personally derived the most from the section on Mindfulness, which interested me the most as I can be impatient, and fidgety, and admittedly, have a hard time carving out time to be present and still.

It was an interesting read and I think everyone can gain at least something from it.

I'm a fan of Kate Hudson but this was a little painful to get through. I gave it a 2 star because I could definitely feel the positive energy radiating from the book and overall I like the message. But, it was repetitive and lacked substance.

I love Kate Hudson and was so excited to dive into this audiobook but oh my goodness this was repetitive and basically nothing I didn't already know.

If you want a book that states the bloody obvious about fitness and diet, go for this.

I'll give you the gist: find an exercise you like and eat whole, foods. There! You've read the book. (Minus a lot of pictures of her lying around in crop tops.)

Besides that, the fact that she discusses yoga/an Ayurvedic diet without being vegetarian immediately made me not trust what she had to say. Ayurveda is a plant-based diet and has been for 5,000 years.

Don't waste your time.

I enjoyed this book and I would recommend it for the good info she offers regarding health, fitness and meditation. I like her ideas and the book is fun and interesting. It would have been better if I owned a copy so I could write in it and refer back to her suggestions.

I received a free paperback copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway.
I cannot recommend reading this book unless you are interested in learning (optimized) details of Kate Hudson’s life and routines about food, exercise, and mindfulness. I would say the book has little to no value for those seeking factual material on health and wellness.
The information presented in this book is unscientific, without citations or support for its claims, though it presents itself as facts. She is a proponent of Ayurvedic medicine, which is at best pseudoscience and at worst harmful. Ayurvedic medicine is based on the idea that there are only three types of people, identified based not just on their looks, but also on their temperament, thought processes, and dietary needs. This is ludicrous to anyone who thinks critically about these claims with respect to our current diverse world population of 7.4 billion. She bases most of her ideas on a multitude of other scientifically disproven claims, such as dispelling “toxins” through multi-day cleanses, and not eating acidic foods to maintain the blood’s natural pH (psst - that’s not how digestion / blood work!). She also suggests such paying such attention to the food you eat that it perhaps approaches disordered eating from my perspective. Even if you believe the doubtful claims of Ayurvedic medicine, this is a tertiary source, so I would seek out other books to learn what the philosophy is all about, rather than just going for her diluted take on it. Or better yet, if you want to eat healthily and/or lose weight, visit a nutritionist or doctor!!!!!
Finally, while I understand the lack of diversity in photographs (all are of Kate herself), I found the extreme lack of diversity in the illustrations troubling. All depicted slim white women. I found this to be quite exclusionary and off-putting. Additionally, her tips for a healthy life were based on a luxurious lifestyle full of free time that is clearly impractical for the daily reality of many women.
Overall, cannot recommend this book in any way.

This got a bit repetitive, but love the concept of listening to what your body is telling you and customizing a plan for yourself.

The dream board was disruptive to the narrative flow, but had a lot of great intro concepts.

I was really excited to read this book because I’ve been a huge fan of Kate Hudson since Almost Famous came out. I’ve basically spent my entire life idolizing both Penny Lane from the movie and Kate in real life. Anyway, the book did not disappoint!

I loved that it was not just a diet/exercise book, nor was it a generic celebrity tell-all. In fact, most of the book didn’t focus on Kate’s life at all! Instead, she explains how she found balance and peace in her own life and with her body through various methods and provides a wealth of resources for readers to find their own paths to health and happiness along the way.

For example, I was blown away by her introduction to ayurveda, which I had never heard of but really resonated with me. After the quizzes in the book to find out which ayurvedic dosha type I was, it hit the nail right on the head, and I was able to find some great information about ways to improve my own health and wellness because of my own individual stress levels, habits, personality traits, etc. I will definitely be researching ayurveda further (don’t worry, Kate provides a resource list at the end of the book for more information) and can’t wait to see where this path leads me on my personal health journey.

I really can’t recommend this book more if you’re looking for ways to personalize your health and wellness journey and want tips from a true mind and body goddess. Kate, if possible, your book made me love you even more!

Couldn't help but get serious "Mommy Blogger" vibes from this entire book. Riddled with pseudo-science, the author never lingers on any one topic too long. She often cites websites, apps, and holistic practitioners. You'll read a lot of shallow information on cleanses, avoiding all chemicals, and fad nutritional advice. While the introspective journaling and meditation chapters were pretty okay, they still don't make this book worthwhile for me. Skip it, read something from a certified professional.

I read some of this, and ended up skimming the rest.
I had high hopes for this book, but it just wasn't anything I haven't read before. It seemed to be a book I've read before that has exercise tips, food tips, etc., while not adding anything more in her own unique voice.
Perhaps if she had written about more personal details from her own life, and how it really applies to what she was writing about, it would have felt more personal.
Reading it felt like she (or her co-author-which always makes me wonder how much the celebrity actually wrote) was trying to force a personal connection to the reader. At least that's how it felt to me.

The book also had some questionnaires to take inside the book, and had a section for a 'drawing board' to record your feeling of what you ate, or how you feel during the day, which I just think was a little too....I'm not sure. Just not for me.

Overall I was disappointed. I think Kate Hudson's overall message for this book is good, it just could have been more than it is.

I love Kate Hudson and the fact that she narrated this book. It's certainly not a fix it or tell all book about how to look like her or be her. It's not even really new information. She shares tools and wisdom of what she's learned over the years that have helped her and encourages listeners to use the information that works for them. To find ways to love themselves. To be good to your body. Love your body.

I'm already fairly health conscious, but this gave me new things to think about. Meditation isn't something I do, but might try because of this. If it can bring calm to my day, why not?!

This is a good listen for anyone at any stage of their life and health goals. Plug in and go for a walk or while doing dishes and pretend she's your BFF. It's fun.

I really liked this because it wasn't a celebrity tell-all nor full of complaints about body type or full of suggestions on how to become "perfect" in Hollywood's eyes. She mentions Ayurvedic practices, which I'm a huge fan of, with accompanying tests to figure out stress levels and other body insights. It read like a magazine, yet, it was quite repetitive. Also, I wish there would have been more meal plans/recipes/weekly layouts. I know Kate Hudson talks about not shoving her plan down your throat or telling you what to do, but let's face it, we're all looking for a starter guide when we pick up these health books.

Such an amazing read. So much of this book resonated with me in terms of things I am currently doing/experiencing or things that I feel would benefit me greatly. As someone who values spirituality, mindfulness, and health, but doesn't always follow the rules, this is a breath of fresh air and exactly what I needed. So much goodness, I can not say enough about this book. Great job Kate, and thank you!!

Started only because I needed an audio book to listen to driving home and Hoopla put it under "similar to what you've just read" after I read Carrie Fisher's wishful drinking - but this is not a celebrity memoir in the slightest. Kept listening only because I have this personal inability to put a book aside after i've started it, even if I'm really disliking it. This was super basic nutrition/health advice (basically, eat a balanced diet and exercise and practice self-care - this book could have been half the length, honestly...) and some soothing Kate Hudson talking about meditation. Not really personal at all so it's more like Kate Hudson reads a text book and...that's about it. If a less charismatic person had been reading it I'd have turned it off immediately, and even so it was a struggle (what is with this trend of straight up nutrition guidelines and anatomy textbooks being read by celebrities and marketed as fabulous books? Looking at Cameron Diaz here as well...lbh nobody reads a book by a celebrity for basic info. I want some fun anecdotes at least!) But my biggest problem with it is the touch of woo slipped in there - specifically the chapter on Cleanses. At least Kate Hudson wasn't recommending people put rocks up and steam their vaginas like Gwyneth Paltrow - but her chapter on cleansing went on wayyyy too long with all that bs about "sludge" building up in your GI tract and how cleansing will remove this cuh-razy toxic build up that your liver and kidneys can't eliminate (but um if your liver and kidneys aren't eliminating waste you are dying or very ill and no amount of lemon ginger water is going to fix that) and oh by the way steam baths with essential oils are greatly helpful if you have kidney problems, so try that! ??? I can't stand it. Maybe some people can - but not me. Nor am I super impressed by celebrities who speak so lovingly of the Tracy Anderson method (which can be summarized as: ladies, don't lift any object heavier than your purse or you will build SO MUCH BULKY MUSCLE!!! HORROR). Puhlease.

So funny Kate Hudson "wrote" a book... Let me first say that I love her as an actress! That said what I really think is that this Billie Fitzpatrick wrote the book but Hudson's name is on the cover, well, to sell copies. Duh!

What exactly does Kate Hudson, rich, famous, and (naturally?) skinny have to say to inspire the rest of us (poor, overweight, not famous) regular people?

Simply NOTHING! Because you have money which means you can buy healthy foods, pay for a gym membership AND a personal trainer... Should I go on?

THE BOOK: In the book she talks about her Four Pillars of Health that is all bullshit because if I had money, I too would:

Pillar #1: Cultivate an intuitive relationship with your boy.- Yeah, if you have money go to one of those holistic gurus to guide you and shit. Please girl, I've had an up and close relationship with my body since I was born, it is called dieting.

Pillar #2: Eat well.- Yes, I will hire a chef to cook healthy for me. I will buy organic food. I will spend time cooking healthy because I have all that time in my life. I will go to restaurants and order healthy food. Or.... I could just buy carrots and eat like a rabbit.

Pillar #3: Awaken your body.- My body has been awake since I was born and discovered food. But, I will hire a personal masseur, go to spas, on retreats, pay a babysitter to take care of my kids for a couple of hours so I can relax, and all that shit that wake your body up.

Pillar #4: The miracle of mindfulness.- I'm not even going to go there.

This book comes with "an authentic plan from a woman who truly lives what she speaks." Well, she doesn't do drugs, she doesn't seem to have an eating disorder, she doesn't smoke, and she can pay for all of the above. Yes, my live would be pretty. happy. too.

I'm giving this book 2 stars, and I'm being kind. The thing is: I appreciate Kate Hudson's effort to make a positive impact. The problem is not in her message, it's that her approach is extremely shallow. As someone who has benefited from Ayurveda, I'm happy to see she is promoting it. However, anyone with any interest in it should get their information elsewhere. Kate's body-type questionnaires aren't detailed enough, her idea of an Ayurvedic cleanse is insufficient, and her recommendation of a lemon-ginger "detox" tea is not suitable for Pitta types. It's nice to see someone in the public eye trying to promote a positive message, but Kate Hudson is someone with the resources to seek out the best help in the world. She could have researched and interviewed top health experts and relayed some serious and useful information on physical and mental well-being. Instead, she chose to write this book much like I'd imagine a teenage girl would complete a school project on How To Make A Positive Impact. If she had written this for a 9th grade class, I'd say A+. Great effort! But for those of us living in the adult world, this book is just not worth a hard earned $26.99.

I absolutely loved this book. A bookclub I'm a part of chose it, and I'm so glad they did because I hadn't heard about it before. This book really spoke to me, and there's aspects of it which I plan to use daily, like the Drawing Board. This book was the perfect book for me to read at this time in my life, and I'm so happy I found it. This is more of what I was hoping Cameron Diaz's The Body Book would be. That book was a bit too scientific for me — which is fine, I love science — I just wanted it to be more personal and something I could identify with. I'd recommend this book to any woman who is wanting to be pretty happy in life.

Кейт тут така Кейт! Розповідає про те, яку філософію життя вона для себе виробила і ненав'язливо ділиться своїми порадами про здоров'я, харчування, спорт, медитації. Тут дуже багато йоги, майндфулнесу, легкості, Аюрведи... і багато гарних картинок! Я не пошкодувала часу на прочитане взагалі. Позитивна книжка, я відверто хотіла б, щоб я змогла так легко довіритися усім цим практикам і не критикувати все в голові постійно, а просто жити і насолоджуватися! Що ж я не народилася в такій же голлівудській родині для такої легкості?)) А взагалі респект, чесно, я люблю таких людей!

Really good and basic intro to ayurvedic types. Also great inspiration to start journaling again and starting to meditate. Would recommend.

I love Kate Hudson and respect her healthy lifestyle, AND this book just shows how privilege leads to a health disparity in the nation. If I had the income she has, of course I'd eat an alkaline diet, shop whole foods, pay for childcare so I can take a dance class...heck, even afford a dance class to begin with....many of her suggestions are just not practical for the every day person. Some of it was good, general mindfulness and body awareness, which I appreciated. But it's definitely written by a well-off Hollywood actress with access to fitness specialists and any grocery options she wants.

Inspirational to read about a celebrity with imperfect eating and exercise habits. She shares that we all go sideways and an ideal week is just that. Good tips for meal prep meal and exercise ideas. I could have gotten even more out of this if I had completed the "Drawing Board". A few good books on her fave book list I'll put on my reading list!

Like 2.5 stars ⭐️
I enjoyed this book at the beginning, and I understand that it's a great guideline for people starting on their journey to their better person. However, I am already a pretty happy person. I'm fit, I run a lot. I try to manage my stress levels, I look inward, I meditate. I eat pretty healthy, could be better, no doubt.
So, that being said, I didn't find that many new things in this book. Lots of stuff I already know. I'm glad to have read about my dosha type, that was interesting.
The thing that bugged me the most, is that one of the questionnaires was totally set up wrong. It was the one about stress levels, and the way it was set up, it basically said: 'hey, you're biting people's heads off. You are dealing with your stress levels so efficiently'... And if you took the answer 'I'm calm in almost every situation, I don't get irritated quickly', the result is: your stress levels are through the roof... Wtf?! How isn't that noticed before printing?
So yeah, that got me irritated AF and I only skimmed the pages after that.

So, conclusion: this has some good tips and tricks if you're starting from scratch, but don't buy this when you're already well on your way to a better you.
Nevertheless, I do want to thank my secret Santa again for getting me this book. 😘 It had been on my list for a while and I'm glad I read it.

This is a pretty traditional self-help book, but I really, REALLY enjoyed it. Kate Hudson discusses everything from healthy eating, to being active, to mindfulness. There are two things I like about this book.
1. Kate is very clear throughout that we need to learn to listen to our bodies and find out what makes us happy. She gives a variety of ideas to improve our diet, a variety of ways to exercise, and a variety of methods to be more mindful.
2. Kate uses the concept of a "drawing board" to encourage us to write down and track our goals and progress. This is what makes this self-help book unique. It prevents you from simply reading all of the good ideas and then forgetting them. Throughout the book she gives specific instructions on how to record the changes you want to make, and to continue to "go back to your drawing board" throughout our journey of becoming more healthy and happy.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to improve their physical, mental or emotional health. :)

What a great motivational book. I havent read many books like this, so I dont have a lot to compare it to. But to me this was really great.

I felt like I could relate to a lot of the things that were mentioned, and I do have a lot of the same opinions that Kate has.
It is supposed to be a book that will motivate you to live a healthier lifestyle, but I definitely felt like I could use a lot of the insporation on other aspects of my life, and that was very enjoyable.

This book will be an audiobook that I am gonna keep on my app, and listen to it every now and again when I need a little extra boost of confidence. Cause that is what this book will do. Give you the tools to start enjoying life as it is, and to work on finding a pretty happy lifestyle. Enjoy the little things in life as well as the big ones.

So much fun that it was Kate Hudson herself who read the audiobook.

There is so much I could say about this book. Maybe because Kate said so much about so many topics. And her style is clear, authentic, intelligent and welcoming. Also I'm overwhelmed about how much I can do to improve my life... One thing is consistently exercising and this is what she says about its benefits:
--reduces stress
--improves attention and memory
--restores mental energy and stamina
--increases longevity
--strengthens our bones, heart skin
--Staying active pumps energy into our body and our brains and makes us feel alive!

I borrowed it from the library and will probably buy a copy so I can highlight SO many things. I might also get the audio.

At one point she tells you to look up all the food in your house with ingredients you can't pronounce, or that contain chemicals. CHEMICALS. WATER IS A CHEMICAL, KATE HUDSON.

She claims to have done tons of research but still made this slip. For shame, ghostwriter helping her with this book. For shame.

Overall this had potential but didn't go into a lot of detail about her life, or really anything about her personal habits. She talked in generalizations, not specifics. Would have liked to have seen more heart, more intimate sharing, instead of bland guides for getting in touch with your body.

I'm still a little confused, is this supposed to be an inspirational book or a soft porn picture book?
Seems like every single celebrity nowadays is a therapist of some kind, thinking that since they have lived a priviledged life of having everything handed to them makes them an expert in all areas of life.

This book should only be written for the author herself because I'm not into the privileged person's opinion about life and looking at her half naked ass up or legs spread posing pictures every 2 pages, while sharing advice which is pretty common knowledge.
