One is an outlaw, one a nanny, one a diva, and one a farmer’s wife, but they have one thing in common—they are sirens. Hanna is blacklisted by the enchanted-community-enforcers called guardians. She wants normalcy in her life, and that opportunity comes in an invitation to a party. Beannca is beautiful and has the social status needed to fit into the guardians’ way of life, and that all crumbles when she’s framed for murder. Sophie loves being a librarian’s nanny for a young girl, but that changes when Sophie finds out sirens aren’t desirable employees. Mae lives in the middle of nowhere with her husband Nolan-a once guardian. Their lives are quiet peaceful…except she can’t complete the family they have made together. Mae’s curse to nearly perfect life—she’s a siren. Hanna, Beannca, Sophie, and Mae discover together what it really means to be a siren through a wizard with a life changing offer. The chance to change their lives, and live as their ancestors once did is within their reach, but that opportunity comes at a price—one they may not be willing to pay.
I live in west central Illinois with my husband, two children and a variety of pets. My life is quiet, mostly normal, and sometimes boring, except for when I write and cook at the same time, things have a tendency to go up in flames. I enjoy mostly urban fantasy novels, especially young adult.
I can't say enough how much I love this intriguing and enchanted world that the author has dreamed up! When all manner of magical creatures exist literally anything is possible.
This story is based in the same world as the other stories by the author. This time we get to meet a group of sirens as they are brought together under strained circumstances and find out they are all looking for something more. Taken from their home world as small children they have almost no memories or knowledge of their pasts and their histories. But being basically trapped on earth under the thumbs of the Librarians and Guardians is no way to live. So with the hope of something better Mae, Beannca, Sophie, and Hannah leave everything they've ever known behind and with the help of Jack (The Green Man) escape to their birth home.
This story was a little closer to New Adult than the other books I've read by M.M. Gavillet but I thoroughly enjoyed it! It took me a few chapters to remember which siren was who and keep them straight but getting to know them and finding out more about their culture and powers was rather interesting. I really hope to learn even more about them in future books. There were some tense situations in the beginning of the book but I was absolutely thrown for an emotional loop by the ending! It is safe to say I didn't see that coming. In my opinion Sirens is an enjoyable story and worth a read.
This was a quick read. It took me some time to sort out the different characters. I liked that the author labeled each POV switch, so that it was not confusing to figure out who was speaking, though it did take some time figuring each character out. The story did not completely pull me in, but it was a different take on sirens than I'd read before, so I was interested. There were a few things that I wasn't very happy about in the book.
I felt kinda blind-sided with the same-sex relationship, though it was kept tasteful, it is not something that I like to read about. The ending left me with so many questions (specific to one siren in particular). How? How did that even happen? I was not very happy with the ending because I felt this one particular event came from left field without an explanation of how it was possible. Especially since certain things were said over and over. I kept thinking to myself, what kind of closure is that. It almost felt like the author got tired of writing the story at the end, so ended everything abruptly just to be done with it.
By no means am I saying the book was horrible. It just frustrated me. I still think it was an easy read and that the world that was created was cool, especially when things started to come together. This is not one that I would read again. Personal preference. 2.5 to 3 stars
Give it a try though, you may find it an excellent read.
