One nice thing about these slightly oversized hardcovers: the extras that I don't recall being in the original graphic novels. This volume includes some short Ms. Marvel stories that appeared in SHIELD and Amazing Spider-Man.

While I enjoyed the issue with Loki, I think that the high point of this book, for me, was the last storyline. The Marvel Universe appears to be coming to an end or something? I'm assuming this was one of those ubiquitous multi-title crossover thingies. Anyway, this seemed like the perfect way to handle such a thing: focus on Jersey City and Kamala’s reaction to events, and let the rest of the Event play out elsewhere. We don't need to know exactly what's going on, just that Something Big is going down, and that Ms. Marvel & Co. are on the job, keeping the neighborhood safe. There are some wonderful and touching character moments. The bit with her mom all but brought me to tears. It was that beautiful.

Ms. Marvel is an amazingly good title. Highly recommended!

This is the spoiler free review of Ms. Marvel issues 1-19 collected as volumes 1 and 2. If you would like to read the spoiler full review complete with pictures please visit https://amanjareads.com/2020/05/06/ms...

Ms Marvel begins her story as Kamala Khan. She's in high school and has a couple of friends there but doesn't really fit in with the popular kids. Her family is Muslim to various degrees. Her parents are culturally and religiously Muslim while her brother is bordering zealot territory. She places herself within that world but has Americanized a bit more.

She also spends her time writing superhero fan fiction and fantasizing about being powerful. Her dream becomes a reality when she gets caught in the Terrigen Mists and develops strange shape shifting and healing powers.

She will discover several issues into the run that she is an Inhuman and her powers were lying dormant until the mists woke them up. Now her goal is to master her use of these powers and protect her home town of Jersey City from bad guys, and robots, and monsters, and maybe the end of the world.

Along the way she deals with all of the normal perils of being a teenager. She needs to get her homework done, escape getting grounded, and manage emotions around boys.

The way that Kamala does everything is with the strongest of integrity. She's incredibly strong willed. She does not give in to anyone on any subject that she believes in.

Her religion, culture, ideology, and morals are constantly being challenged but she knows what she believes in and does not bend. I respect her so much for all of this. She's an actual good person and at this point seems incorruptible.

She also becomes a leader with natural grace.

I especially enjoyed a plot in volume 2 in which she starts to fall head over heels for a boy. But she never loses herself. She's so much stronger than any teenage girl I ever knew. Mentally and physically.

There are a couple of cliffhangers by the end of this run and I'm curious to see where it goes from here. I need to do a little reading guide research because I think it's about to tie into a much larger story line and it might be one of those cases where many lines have to be read at once to get the full story. Sigh, comics.

Regardless, Kamala Khan, Ms Marvel, is one to look out for. She's a new hero on the Marvel scene but she's super powerful in all of the ways one can be powerful and she has a very bright future ahead of her.

This is a new character who's definitely worth getting into.

Ms Marvel's initial series continues to impress with its second and concluding hardback edition.

This series has been an absolute delight to read from the start. The characterisation here is undoubtedly some of the best writing from 2014 and G. Willow Wilson does a fantastic job of bringing New Jersey and its inhabitants alive in the Marvel universe.

Volume two follows its predecessor perfectly, in fact, I'd go some way to say it's slightly more engaging due to the introduction of a more menacing villain introduced against the backdrop of a multiverse incursion!

On the surface this also looks likely to be a must read for fans of the Disney+ show.

Overall, I can't fault this follow up and conclusion to Ms Marvel's initial series. Sure, there's a somewhat open ended conclusion that may require a little further reading, which could irk some people, but this has undoubtedly been a wonderful read in its entirety.

Another great installment. Book starts of with a quick 1 issue story where Loki shows up as the agent of Asgard looking for someone. There are some cool interactions with Ms Marvel and him. Then we move into the main story, the “other” Inhumans. Medusa was afraid of these guys showing up but really didn’t get to warn Kamala. One of them infiltrated into Kamala’s life that was an old family friend that now is trying to recruit her the the evil side. Had a good time with all of that. Then, since this comic was running at the same time Hickman’s New Avengers was going, we get the convergence happening. Captain Marvel shows up and helps Kamala wrap up the evil Inhumans plot and help with getting people to a safe place with the city in mayhem from the impending doom. Definitely interested in vol 3 to see where they go now after the convergence. During all of this, there was some nice character development between Kamala and her friends as well as her mom. This series continues to be quite charming and full of fun and adventure. Great stuff.

Volume 2 was still super fun.

It's still a bit ridiculous in places, but I'm pretty sure my reaction to that is because I'm not really used to reading superhero stuff. I liked the family stuff in here and .

It was a fun read.

So, this is book two of the series and I am really impressed. I know that it can be very difficult to maintain a high standard when writing a series, especially a comic book series, but they have broken the mold with this book.

The book itself is wonderful to read. I am seriously thinking that Kamala could be one of the best new series out there. I really appreciate the way the writing and art are so complimentary of each other and manage to show off all the visiting characters.

Amazing work all around.

Let me start this off my saying I LOVE Ms. Marvel, Kamala is cute, funny, and refreshing. I thought this collection would be a great chance to introduce friends to the series, but wanted to read it first...

Well... sigh... its not that. It starts off ok, little introduction to Kamala, but that is ok, as the personality and art style sell a rough beginning. However, an initially interesting story devolves into a hot mess, with what I am assuming was a Marvel universe wide event that comes out of no where, makes no sense, and then isn't further explained later in the book.

This is the biggest problem with Marvel/DC comics, this universe wide events derail and confuse stories readers are invested in, and without reading a bunch of the other series they make no sense, and give NO closure.

I was hoping a collection like this would clean that up, but nope, just leaves the reader going wtf just happened, and then thinking well I guess the other parts of the story will explain it... oh wait these are just random excerpts and stories... greeeat.

If you want to start with Ms. Marvel do NOT read this, start with volume 1 No Normal and go from there, the story will be better explained, and you will get to know the character better.

What a disappointment...

Well, a lot happened in this one! So many things! Its interesting to see where this will go, but I feel that some parts could be more eloborate and take it a bit slower? Like too much action. I need som time to breathe and process! But Ms. Marvel is cool. Good role model.

I could have sworn I'd reviewed this already. I've reviewed volumes 3 and 4, and I'm doing 5 in a moment, so I'm not sure why I missed this one and volume one. Better late than never, I suppose.

Continuing the excellence established in the first volume, this second hardcover has Kamala deal with love in many shapes and sizes, as well as the end of the Marvel Universe as we know it. Appearances by Loki and Carol Danvers make this relevant to the Marvel Universe at large, while the high stakes and yet personal nature especially of the Last Days storyline make sure that you never forget that this is Kamala's story through and through.

Also included is a team-up with the Agents of SHIELD, and some back-up strips from Amazing Spider-Man that gets Kamala fighting alongside her second favourite superhero. These do feel a little like padding, but Kamala was a relatively new character at the time so any of her early appearances were collected together.

On art, we've got Adrian Alphona for the most part, especially the final issues of the volume as this section of Kamala's story comes to a close, while Takeshi Miyazawa who handles the bulk of volumes 3 and 4 also shows up here, with the Loki fill-in by Elmo Bondoc.

Ms. Marvel's first tranch of stories ends here, but they definitely go out with a bang, and when you're competing with the unverse ending, that's gotta be a pretty big bang.

This one was much better I believe than Vol 1. Kamala Khan now understanding her powers uses them more often and it's a bit more of an exciting read. Loki makes an appearance as well which I was happy to see. The stories all tie in together nicely and it was nice seeing a traditional love angle in there, even if it is a teenage love angle. We know a bit more about her powers in this, and It was one of my gripes on Vol 1. I couldn't put it down and read it all at once. Bravo.

I wish I rated Vol 1 a 2 star just so I can give this one 2 stars higher.

I enjoyed this volume but I found it a little non-linear and it seemed to jump around from one story to a completely different one. There is still one storyline that was started but not completed that I am hoping will be picked up in the next instalment. The little side stories with SHIELD and Spiderman were fun but I would have rather focused on the main one.

Overall it was a good 3.5 stars but not as strong as the first volume.

Ok so this edition had 3 books in one, the main one ending in a complete cliffhanger. I loved all three, but the first one was my favorite. Keeping up with the story was kind of hard, especially since they were all different and I was reading them out of order. But I completely recommend the series if you read them in order! Kamala is such a fun character, though she is a little annoying. But I would completely recommend this!

This volume really perfects what makes Kamala so special. It helps that I have my own Muslim superhero in my life to help me with all the nuance and detail that Wilson nails! I’ve come to really love Alphona and Miyazawa’s pencils, too.

As I work toward the Jonathan Hickman run of Avengers leading up to Secret Wars, it’s cool to see how my favorite characters deal with the universe ending in their own series first. I’ve got All-New Wolverine, Thor, and another Hawkeye volume to get to next. Fortunately, Doomsday doesn’t come out for like a year and a half, so nothing should be spoiled.

Not quite as fresh as the first volume, but still with plenty to love. Unabashedly nice and family-oriented, Kamala Khan is a believable fangirl superhero. The extent of her powers is less important in these stories than the size of her heart. Gorgeous stuff.

A comic book I can relate to! So accessible and easy to love, even for someone who has only known Marvel through the movies. The "ending" left me hanging and a bit unsatisfied but that is the point, right? I can't wait for the next one! I love Kamela's nerdy enthusiam and her altruism, which is taken to a whole 'nother level in Vol 2. I also LOVE the interactions with Kamela's brother - we're getting more development with their characters as this story continues. Her brother gets some great lines in this one. I could not put it down!

The second book featuring the ever charming Kamala Kahn is as consistently fun and delightful as the first. Kamala continues to grow into her role as a hero of Jersey City. She doesn’t have a book-wide antagonist like before, but the foes she does have tie more in to her status as an Inhuman. Though some of them felt underwritten, and the Big Bad’s plan in particular was woefully fleshed out and explained (maybe it gets more detail in an Inhuman focused story?) the new antagonist Kamran ends up being really personal to Kamala and the most interesting one of the story. Before Kamran’s true nature is revealed, he and Kamala hit it off in their personal lives and began to develop mutual crushes on one another. Unfortunately for Kamala, it all goes south when Kamran goes from prince charming to undeniable creeper. Though brief, a scene involving Kamran convincing Kamala into his car under false pretenses, and then dismissing her concerns (and later, anger) was surprisingly intense and had me glued to the page, concerned for her well-being.

The supporting cast remains solid. I can’t help but really like Bruno’s brother Vick, even though he’s only really present in the beginning of the story. Bruno and Kamala’s sweet friendship-maybe-romance is enjoyable, mostly due to how earnest the two are. Bruno’s a great friend. Kamala’s brother Aamir gets more development through the story, and you feel like he’s got his own life aside from what we see with his interactions with Kamala. He’s also delightful and has a really nice heart to heart with Bruno which says is a pretty heavy discussion about cultural differences and familial expectations in romantic relationships for what’s usually a fun, almost indie feeling title. Like with the scenes in the mosque in the first book, I appreciated this nuanced look at Kamala’s culture and the expectations the people around her have of her.

A scene with Kamala and her mother near the end (you know the one) hit me directly in the feels.

We also finally got an official meeting between Carol and Kamala, and I really adore their dynamic. The entire issue was a delight. The climatic end of the arc comes with a poignant, bittersweet tone and a gorgeous image of Kamala and Bruno that I can’t get out of my head. The tone suddenly shifts afterward as we get a few unrelated team-ups which occur chronologically before the end of the previous arc at some unspecified time. It’s an odd placement and the tonal shift is initially very jarring, but I understand they were trying to fill the book with more content.

It’s fun to see Kamala team up with random S.H.I.E.L.D agents (Coulson!) and then with Spider-Man. Spidey and Kamala’s team-up was another delight. Very cute and a nice palate cleanser after the tragic ending to the main story. I think a more obvious cutaway to the back-up stories would’ve been nice, but the art change did clue in the idea that we were seeing some previous adventures-- though the S.H.I.E.L.D team-up, which is the first story we get, says “The Day Before” and makes it seem like it’s going to explain what the hell was just happening. So it becomes a little confusing when the story veers off into kooky hijinks from a much more dramatic, End of Season Two Finale-sort of feel.

Kamala is still one of the most enjoyable and believable “teen” characters around. It’s impossible not to root for her. (Does saying “teen” in quotations make me old? It makes me feel old.)

In many ways, this is a typical superhero comic with people not guessing the secret identity of the hero even though it should be obvious, the main villain starting out as a friend, gratuitous cameos from other superheroes, and so forth. Also, as a middle-aged man, I don't exactly fit into the target demographic since it's about a high-school girl with high-school problems like falling in love for the first time and going through the awkward transition into adulthood. (In fact, her shape-changing superpower makes a great metaphor for the bodily changes teenagers go through.)

Despite that, I really ended up liking it. For one thing, it's really funny. There are all sorts of humorous things going on in the background such as the names of businesses and the brand of cereal Kamala eats. Characters do funny things in the background as well, such as when we see police dumping evidence into the river or a guy in a crowd scene holding a pig for some reason. It was also pretty funny when Kamala talked to a hot dog vendor as if he was her therapist and he reacted by acting like her bartender.

Another great thing about the comic is it's full of good messages, but the messages never sideline the plot. Kamala stands up to discrimination and gas-lighting, while making her community a better place. I liked that her brother genuinely didn't want to have superpowers because he was happy with himself the way he was. Family is also important and is a bigger part of her life than you see in most superhero comics. It's also nice to see Muslim characters who aren't villains, but just regular people.

After reading Wilson's novel Alif the Unseen, I spotted a potential overlap with Alif and Kamala both being fans of the same video game, World of Battlecraft. Reportedly, Ms. Marvel is going to get her own television series on Disney+. Like the comic, the TV series will probably be aimed at a younger audience than me, but I'm still looking forward to it anyway.

I am writing this review with a huge grin on my face because even hours after finishing it, I still can't believe this one was SO much better. And that's saying something, because I loved the first volume a great deal. I really thought nothing could top off the previous volume but am I glad I was proved wrong!

One thing I genuinely appreciate about Kamala is how steadfast she is. She knows what she wants and she will do anything to do it: protecting New Jersey and her people. She is so pure of heart that one can't help but love her, and root for her. I can recall many instances, reading this volume, where I was literally yelling in excitement of her actions. Kamala's silly, she's funny as hell and super cool. And oh, her love for Carol Danvers! I am simply obsessed.

I liked the way this volume explored several different aspects of her life, where she was seen developing a crush to really teaming up with Captain Marvel. I do wonder what "the end of the world" is about, because it kind of came out of nowhere and wasn't really explained much (from what I researched, it's some sort of Marvel comic event) but hopefully, I'll get the answers in the next book.

And can we please talk about Bruno? My poor boy needed that talk, on both occasions. I'm glad Kamala did what she did and how she did it because really, we want more representation in media of women being single superheroes. Like, they don't have to have a love interest, you know? I'm not against Kamala and Bruno; I'm glad both of them are self-aware of their differences and acted very maturely at such a young age, with decisions like these, but they're adorable and I want more of them--as friends.

I laughed my ass off, hell, I cried even and I very much enjoyed this one. I'm even more excited for Volume 3 and I, ah, I just can't wait to start on it already.

In most ways, a significant improvement over volume 1. Kamala is even more loveable and her supporting cast is as great as ever but the stories being told are far more compelling - surprisingly so, as the best arc involves a tie-in to one of Marvel's endless "event" comics. Alphona's art continues to be a treat and the guest artists bring their own energy to the book, while very much capturing the same feel and semi-manga-influenced style. And again, the actual production and value of for money of this deluxe hardcover is hard to beat.

The only thing preventing Volume 2 from getting an even higher score is that the first series of Ms. Marvel (don't worry, it gets rebooted immediately after) ends after the eighth issue in this collection so to pad things out, Marvel collected some of Ms. Marvel's appearances in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and a couple of issues of the Amazing Spider-man and, while they're perfectly fine little stories, they pale in comparison to the very unique voice that G Willow Wilson brings when writing Kamala in the main book. Again, they have good creative teams, are perfectly decent reads and it's nice enough of Marvel to actually include them here (they could have just collected the eight issues and substantially dropped the price, but that's not really Marvel's style) but they do feel a bit out of place - especially after the note-perfect end of the story, proper.

Still, if the first volume hasn't convinced you that Ms. Marvel is one of the best superhero comics of the past few years, this one almost certainly will.

I have been and a Ms. Marvel fan in all her iterations and Kamala Khan is a great addition to the Mar-Vell name. Inhuman and a Ms Marvel? Cannot go wrong! This edition takes Kamala into the bigger Marvel Universe but still in Jersey City. I love that she is following, basically, in the footsteps of Spider-Man and his journey of becoming a super-hero and keeping it in his neighborhood. Kamala is doing the same. Although in this collection, she has to step out into the bigger evils of the world. G. Willow Wilson and all the artist are amazing. Mark Waid is always great with S.H.E.I.L.D issue as well.

The reason this doesn't get five stars for me has to do with information that isn't in this edition. (Like how did Lineage take over New Attilan and where are Medusa and Lockjaw?) This isn't G. Gillow Wilson's fault, it is the fault of all the crossing over of characters and storylines that Marvel has taken to a unnatural place. It breaks the flow of reading and that is never a good thing. Stories don't make sense unless you read absolutely ever comic they create. I was doing this for years, but now, I would like them to put a complete story into these graphic novels, not have a story, or at least ADD an explanation like they used to do back in the sixties and seventies. (* Check out Amazing Spider-Man #46 for what happened to Medusa and Lockjaw -- editor of choice). Just my only comment. Maybe I am asking too much.

READ THIS BOOK!

I'm giving it 4 stars despite the fact this book includes S.H.I.E.L.D. #2 and Amazing Spider-Man #7-8, which are hardly 2 stars comics. Especially the S.H.I.E.L.D. one, I can't sometimes believe that Marvel would hire such mediocre artists and writers... such bad quality... And some dialogue boxes are even clipped in this edition, so messy.
The writing of Ms. Marvel might be cheesy sometimes, yes, but it's aimed to a young public and because of that it's good that they include clear and direct messages regarding certain topics that are sadly problematic between kids and teens (and let's be real, many adults too). Just as an example, I love what Bruno has to say about the "friend-zone" concept.
Kamala Khan is a lovely character. Maybe not all writers will understand her, as those awful issues that I mentioned before, and are included in this book, show somehow... But G. Willow Wilson definitely did a good job with the character. Adrian Alphona is a great comic artist and I hope to see more of him in the future. While his drawings in Runaways were not bad, only in Ms. Marvel I can really appreciate his original style, full of life and personality.

The problem with the main superhero publishers is that there’s always a sense of a genre that’s in a constant state of paranoia: will there be another bubble that bursts? How do we keep reinventing the wheel to keep our readers whilst also changing the status quo a bit but not enough to worry people? How do we engage with our spin offs whilst also keeping regular comics coming out?

It’s all very reactive and anxious, which is bizarre for a medium which really should be confident of what it does by now. And it’s even more bizarre when the main lines of comics are constantly rebooted and rebooted yet again, that the answer is standing there right in front of them. Because Squirrel Girl, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Ms Marvel have been both popular and well reviewed for doing what Marvel always does at their best - tell stories that combine personal drama with something bigger and more super villainy. They just do it without fuss and do it brilliantly and subversively and joyously. This works as a superhero story but more than that Wilson understands the world of Kamala Khan enough for it never to feel didactic, cliched or token. Great fun

Ms. Marvel is an all around good teen who balances normal teen girl issues, with her super-powers and urge to save everyone. She is confident in her strange ability to morph her body, something that most girls would struggle with, given body distortion and confidence issues prevalent in teens. The fact that the writers include that and other things that make completely relatable to idealists who struggle to accept not everything can be made right, makes her such an enjoyable character to follow and cheer on. Her likability transcends in the bonus issues where she crosses paths with Spiderman in one crossover issue and S.H.I.E.L.D. in another. It's great that she is from a different culture and its commendable that she finds the strength to put romance aside when she knows her focus needs to be on what she is passionate about. I think Ms. Marvel is a character worth being admired by those in her age group.
