The sun's rays filtered in from the partially opened shades of the plane. They lit up the world in front of me and warmed my soul, knowing I was almost to my destination. The beautiful golden light replaced the grey and hazy cobwebs from my eyes, revealing the most spectacular scene I had ever seen in my entire life. I looked out the small seven-inch window and witnessed something that I'll never forget! I beheld something in this magnificent world that the majority of people never get to see. I was looking out at Mount Everest, the world's highest peak!
I was at the tail end of a three-flight journey with two layovers in between, nearly logging twenty-four hours of flight time. I hadn't gotten any real sleep in the last thirty-six hours. My bloodshot eyes were heavy, my mind was slow and sluggish, and my body was even slower in response. How did I get here? I thought to myself. Am I d-r-e-a-m-i-n-g?
As Lao and Confucius once said, “A journey of one-thousand miles begins with one step.” My story is about inspiring you to take your own journey one step at a time. It's about dreaming and accomplishing the impossible. It's not only about aiming for the sky and reaching for the stars but enjoying the journey along the way.
Begin your personal journey today, press forward to the top, and don't you ever stop. As you move toward your dreams, there will be obstacles and setbacks along the way; don't be afraid. You can get to the top of your world by following the signs and guide posts within these pages. You can do it with others! You can do it with me! We can do it together, one step at a time!
Jeff Griffin does an excellent job at telling his story. Life doesn't turn out perfectly, there are trials, but with those trials come invaluable lessons.
This book began when Jeff had a an accident that ended in paralysis. Instead of letting it defeat him, he found ways to move forward. His hoped and dreams were dashed in a moment. He knew what he wanted with his life, it didn't include a wheelchair. People told him that some things would be impossible. His reality changed and his dreams changed.
He now takes his message to help motivate others to change their perspective. Circumstances cannot always be changed, but the way we deal with them determine our outcome. In the first few chapters of the book he shares a statistic that nine out of ten people will quit. He then states that we all quit sometimes, but the point is to continue and succeed later. Maybe that is one of the messages that I really needed from this book. "DOn't quIT!"
Jeff Griffin challenges the reader in each chapter. He wants us to set goals and keep moving forward positively. I loved the positive and hopeful message of the book.
This is as motivational book that has spiritual and religious references.
This is a great inspiring story, but I have to admit I wish they'd had a professional editor. A lot of mistakes that the spell check wouldn't get, and it's distracting to the message!
I wasn't expecting the story that I got, based on this book description. A true story, Jeff Griffin had a horrific accident that changed his life forever. The first miracle is surviving the accident. I can't even begin to imagine the pain, the horror, the devastation, and the fear that followed, yet instead of wallowing in self pity, Jeff picked himself up and found new dreams to dream. I was completely amazed at how positive and hopeful he was and still is.
Each chapter is set up in a way to cause the reader to make goals, as each of us has our own mountains to climb and challenges to endure. Full of hope, words of wisdom, and personal stories, these chapters are broken down in ways that make it seem attainable to reach the goals, instead of overwhelming.
I can't believe the positive vibes that flow off the pages. I'm so much more grateful for what I do have and not wishing for what I don't. This is a great motivational book for anyone looking for inspiration.
Content: some difficult situations and scenes, but nothing too graphic. The author is LDS, so there are religious references.

My Rating: 3.5 Stars! Jeff Griffin's story is amazing and very inspirational. His determination and positive attitude amidst tragedy are incredible. His writing style is easy-going, humorous, and motivating. He pulls you into his storytelling and doesn't let go. Reading this book definitely puts your problems into perspective, and inspires you to do better and work harder. I liked the format with the Mile Markers as "chapters," and I liked that he gave readers advice and goals to achieve. There isn't any profanity or violence (except for the accident scene, which is hard to read), and there isn't any "intimacy," but it does discuss adult issues like having children when you're paralyzed. I lowered my rating to 3.5 because there are many grammatical errors in the book. I would recommend this book for ages 12 and up. I was really amazed at Jeff Griffin's story as I read this. I was amazed number one that he actually survived this accident in the first place and number two at his determination to be able to do everyday things again. I really loved the personal stories the author included in this book.
This book is written in sections with a challenge for each section. I liked the way this was done, it gave me a bit of time to really think about what had happened to Jeff, how he learned from it and how his lesson could apply to my life, even though I've never meant him and his challenges are different from mine.
I enjoyed reading this book. It's well-written and interesting!
