Leonardo da Vinci lived an itinerant life. Throughout his career – from its beginnings in the creative maelstrom of fifteenth century Florence to his role as genius in residence at the court of the king of France – Leonardo created a kind of private universe for himself and his work.
Leonardo also spent a great deal of time away from his easel, pursuing his interest in engineering, natural science, sculpture, poetry, fables, music, and anatomy. In the time that another artist would finish a series of paintings, he would work on one. Sometimes a painting would take decades, accompanying him on his travels as he worked on other commissions.
Leonardo's private world was both vibrant and active. It sometimes did and at other times did not interact with the wider world. But what emerged from it has established Leonardo as the definition of the Renaissance Man.
First a novel for kids about LdV, then a bio for a young audience, then this slightly more rigorous bio ... they've built nicely upon one another, re-enforcing many of the same points, while adding new info. The most notable discrepancy between the two bios is dV's father figure -- who had the most influence during his formative years, his genetic father (a notary) or his stepfather (a manual laborer -- a baker accd to the Tello bio)?
Interesting info ... p. 7: He was convinced that there was something personal, intimate and unique about the way he related to the world around him. I like that aspect of his personality ... if it's true.
p 42: [His] writings constantly emphasize the importance of painting above all other forms of human thinking and doing.
and then on p 43: Whether he is comparing painting with sculpture, poetry, mathematics or music, painting always comes out on top.
I think I'll move on to one of the more detailed bios.
Such a hefty biography in just so many words and pages (this series seems to hold a 77-78 page rule, though the texts are small). From his birth name, his illigetimacy, his training, his incapacity to finish most of his projects despite being the Renaissance man, this was a great read. His artistic style, his commissioned portraits are all carefully analyzed, and I love how he puts in little details symbolic of the person he's painting, whether it's a pun on their name, or of their stature. In truth, many of his portraits are not realistic; I was quite surprised to know that Mona Lisa is pretty much a rehash of his other paintings, like her hands were from his old works, her smile a style from a painting he did, and though I know it's an incomplete work, it's only here that I learned he never gave the painting to the man who commissioned it, one theory being that they thought it didn't even look like the girl. It was in his possession until he died; a painting he was working on perpetually. And if you know the story of Mona Lisa, it's a painting that only gained notoriety because it was stolen. Oh, the art world. So many high-ranking patrons and a well-cushioned life, one more surprise was he met young Francesco Melzi in Milan, about 30 years younger than him, whom he taught and stayed with him for the rest of his life. It was him who also continued the legacy of da Vinci by painstakingly copying his notebooks (writings and illustrations) and releasing his own edition of it, which was then circulated among the artists and scholars (the Vitruvian Man is one of the drawings). I love learning how often it is that some patient relative or friend laboriously kept their works, thereby becoming the reason for these artists' worldwide fame.
Like the other in the series I read (about Dali), this had the right level of detail that I was looking for as slightly more than an introduction. However, I didn't like the illustrations as much, and I didn't get as much human element. Maybe that's just because Dali was crazier than da Vinci or because it's harder to get details from further back in history. But regardless, I didn't enjoy it as much.
I really loved the This is Caravaggio in this series so I purchased this one as well and really looked forward. Not only was it not a great book, the drawings in it are terrible, AND one of them is outright racist and offensive.
I’m in love with this series! It’s the perfect introduction to the history of some famous paintings. The texts are simple, informative and absolutely beautiful, the illustrations are beautiful as well and Da Vinci’s most important paintings are explained in the simplest and most memorable ways.
Informative about the life and work of Leonardo. But where the book lacked was on the depth in which it covered the various important works (both paintings and otherwise) of the man.
The book focused too much on da Vinci's work to the extent that I felt as if there was nothing much I learnt about the man itself. It would have been better if there was a better balance between both aspects of his life.
