An ancient Egyptian artifact is driving Queen Victoria insane, and that's not top of Cara Devon's growing list of problems.

So, I just finished book two (Thank you to the author for giving me a copy for review!!!).. and I LOVED IT.
It's got all the fun of the first one, but in a different package. Rather than a murder mystery surrounding a mysterious artifact, this time takes a global adventure to a few corners of the world.
Cara and Nate's relationship develops new quirks and new tensions, all the while enjoying the same level (if not an increased level!) of passion. Damn, Nate gets me revved up!
Also, more Loki (rawr!), more Miguel, more Nan/Nessy, more Helene, more Jackson, even a little Fraser!
This time around though, there's a new artifact in town. It's called Hatshepsut's Collar. It causes its wearer to go insane with egomania, crazy lust for power... and it just happens to be around the neck of the most powerful woman in the world.
Hijinx ensue.

I'm really torn between giving 1 or 2 starts on this one. I'm an optimistic person, so I'll start with the good but I'm also a realist... and there's a lot of bad.
To be fair though, I thought this would be adventure/steampunk and only realized after that it is targeted to an audience that wants "adult romance". I wanted Steampunk Lara Croft.
Good: The sentences are coherent and structured for the most part.
*** SPOILER RANT AHEAD ***
Bad: The main characters, Lara Croft wanna be and vicious underworld crime lord, are like the guy in the Dos Equis commercial. They can do anything and everything to the craziest magnitude possible better than you. Or anyone for that matter. He can kill people in cold blood, has only ever lost one fight, shoots better than anyone else, has never lost at poker, has never lost period, all women desire him, he is a pirate, he is a pilot, he is the most successful businessman in all of England, he has unlimited credit, and he is the hottest, most dangerously desirable bachelor in all of England. It's hard to relate to people who are so amazing and perfect that everyone wants to be like them.
She she is a skilled kickboxing fighter and she can beat almost any man that challenges her, she's only 5'2" tall, she's traveled the world and can speak 4 languages, she is a sharpshooter trained by gunslingers in America, she can out-ride men side-saddle, she can shoot a fleeing hare while mounted side saddle with a rifle, she has the perfect body, she looks good in everything she wears, and everyone comments on how beautiful she is all the time. Did I mention she's only 21?
She looks just like Ariel from the Little Mermaid sans fins and he looks like Prince Eric with his "dark hair and piercing icy blue eyes." His eyes communicate deadly intent, desire, and an outpouring of love, though not all at the same time. I've never seen eyes that can do all those things. Maybe I'm just not there yet but I don't know anyone who has had this experience either. I shall try to be more observant of actual people to see if maybe I'm just being unfair.
They have sex all the time. ALL. THE. TIME. She was physically abused her entire childhood by being beaten into "submission" and then sold off to be forcibly raped repeatedly until she escaped from her captivity. She is now a sex machine because a criminal overlord showed his sensitive side and loves her with all his being. His soul is not complete without her. His burning desire and naked love has allowed her to move past 15 years of abuse in the span of 1 month. *Huge eyeroll* Not buying it.
The title of both books lead a reasonable person to believe that a huge part of this story is about ancient artifacts. So misleading!!! This book should be categorized as fantasy romance, with a small sprinkling of adventure and a pinch of steampunk. Parts of it were entertaining and I don't mind lots of sex, so for the most part I will say this book was "ok". I have to say though that I think I'm being VERY generous by giving it 2 stars.

So, now, Nate and Cara are a couple. But it's easier to love someone then it is to live with them. Especially when they have a secret that changes the whole scope of the relationship. I understand Nate's motives and even applaud. I also understand Cara's anger and hurt, but really? Considering how their relationship has been, I think running away would be a little over dramatic.
I love everybody in this book. Nate, Cara, Loki, Miguel, Jackson.... and Natalie. I'm glad Cara actually has a friend who gets her. I hope she shows up more. You can really see the loyalty, respect and sense of family they all have. Can't wait for the next adventure!

Under the influence of an ancient and powerful Egyptian artifact, Queen Victoria is descending into madness and is obsessed with expanding the British Empire across the globe. When her lover, Viscount Nathaniel Lyons, is arrested for treason, Cara Devon must work together with his cohorts to expose those behind the conspiracy to overthrow the monarch.
Despite having read and enjoyed the first book in this series several years ago, I never managed to continue. However, I recently re-discovered the series on Audible+ and decided to refamiliarize myself with book #1 and continue on to book #2.
This follow up to Nefertiti's Heart (see my review here) is action-packed from the start. Exley's world Steampunk world-building is top-notch, and I particularly enjoyed the inclusion of actual historical figures and the twist explaining .
Cara and Nate's romance hits a rough spot as he makes a stunning revelation and Cara must decide if she can accept the situation and move forward. In the meantime, the two are caught up in the queen's madness and the conspiracy plot is well-developed and intriguing.
In terms of the audiobook, Gemma Dawson's overall narration is first-rate. However, her female voices are a bit too high-pitched for me, and her male voices could be deeper.
Overall, I am glad to have found this series again and will continue sooner rather than later.

Well, finally found out where the "Artifact Hunters" title comes from, but for me this series so far is all about the romance, which is not what I prefer. My favorite show is Warehouse 13 and I thought this would be a bit like that and it's not at all. It's a romance book where there happens to be artifacts. I don't love it because of that, if the focus wasn't on the romance I probably would.

Just as addictive as the first book! I love the mixture of elements in this series. If you like steampunk, adventure, mystery, historical fiction, romance, the Victorian era, fantasy, sci-fi, magical artifacts, mystical creatures, a headstrong leading-lady and a mysterious, heartstopping leading-man, this series is for you. The endings was satisfying and had me cheering because it set up future adventures for the dynamic duo. I rarely give 5 star ratings and I highly recommend this series.

This sequel was great! I think I would have loved it if I read the book than just listening to the audiobook. One reason I’m giving this 4 stars and not 5 is that I wasn’t expecting the sex in the beginning of the book and it was a bit much for me. These sex scenes I’d rate 18+. I was feeling like “okay get to the adventure already”. This one definitely has more romance than the first one. Other than that I love these characters still and I’m very excited to see where the next book takes them.

not kindle unlimited, none are that know of, bought the 1 pack which assumed meant 1-4 when NOT; it is 1, 2, 3, 4 -- which leaves OUT 2.5, 3.5
Sexual situations, past abuse mental and physical and sexual plus present situations hadn't been shoved in to what would otherwise have been quite interesting steampunk type story, so as it is dropped to 3 then 2, and if the other ones the same will drop it further. That was in book 1, which led me to drop from a 5 to a 4 to a 3 then a 2. Book 2 not as much but still way too much of that crap but a lot of telling the story over in parts and it drags, and how many times is she going to stick a knife up her sleeve or where ever, she's done it at least twice so far just in the space of a few pages. And since when is walking pants not suitable for uh walking around looking? This is also way too much chick crap with back and forth of the heart device has them bound so if one die then the other does, oh way no maybe she could get far enough away, no they are bound so if he is executed she will die too, no maybe not, CHRIST'S SAKE ALREADY you either do or do not know as the 'writer' so figure it out ALREADY.
Doesn't help having places with missing words or words not used in normal usage/meaining, a little confusing and a lot aggravating having to 'translate/fix' things while reading!Imperative to talk to Chinese Ambassador's wife, and to keep her from a twitchy mount, so they leave her behind and don't even look for her until the fox hunt is almost over? What is up with British spelling and PRESUMABLY {a good bit WRONG, re syntax or time period}and all the UN-necessary swearing, as they didn't use those words hardly ever if at all in that period, what bollocks too tame or what, no idea how to convey extreme emotion without cussing worse than some low bred white trash sailor? The 'books' don't say what happens'. Really...since in other parts of THIS story it said that anyone who took it off another DIED, and the electrical whatever fried the persons standing too close TOO. Then there is the matter of you are linked, and maybe maybe not {depending on what sentence of this volume} if they die you die, so...while he is swallowing sea water, you ask for a bucket so you can give him your air and spit out his sea water...after you get the bucket....There are many other instances, but the last so far caught was 'The wound in his leg healed as he walked to the stage...uh hello, learn English, British or American, and about commas and correct placement...try something such as 'since his leg wound was healed enough, he walked to the stage'...otherwise it's a HUH? because it sounds as if it healed as he walked, duh.

This was a solicited review. The author (who has been known to hang out around this blog) requested me to review her latest book in exchange for a free copy.
This is the second book in a series, so I had a little bit of catch-up to do since I haven't read the first. For the most part it wasn't particularly difficult to keep up, but I do wish I had seen the beginning of the relationship between the two main characters, as I felt it would have helped my understanding of them.
The book centers on the professional and romantic relationship between Cara Devon and Viscount Nathaniel Lyons. Nate runs an airship company whose imports are sometimes of dubious legality and is also an agent of the Queen. Unfortunately there is a mysterious falling out between himself and Queen Victoria and he is arrested and thrown into the Tower of London. At which point Cara must take over his operations to rescue him. Their adventures take them to Imperial Russia and back before the story is done, on the trail of a disturbing conspiracy to overthrow the throne of England.
The setting is fairly standard for a steampunk novel. The Victorian England depicted is close to the historical one, and the author seems to be knowledgeable about the period. Of course there are also airships all over the place, both in the hands of pirates and privateers and Her Majesty's Airship Corps. There is also a distinct fantasy element in the world, mostly in the mysterious artifacts around which the plot revolves. These are ancient artifacts (such as the titular Hatshepsut's Collar) with supernatural powers. I won't go into more detail for fear of spoiling the plot. I did find some of the supernatural aspects of the story some of the hardest to buy into. For example, as a result, I gather, of the first novel's plot, the two protagonists are soul-bonded to each other and can communicate through a psychic link. It's not that this idea is badly handled, but rather feels unnecessary to me.
In addition to being a steampunk adventure, the novel is a romance. Again, it's a little difficult for me to completely decide how I feel about the central relationship because I feel like I'm missing pieces of the puzzle as a result of not reading the first book. It's not a perfect romantic relationship, as Cara has problems trusting Nate, and they do not always communicate effectively. There are explicit sex scenes, which honestly I felt were some of the weakest parts of the novel. They felt a little clumsily incorporated into the story and there didn't seem to be a consensus from scene to scene of how much to describe and how much to obscure and it felt uneven. (I say this as someone with a fair bit of experience writing explicit scenes myself, so I pay attention to more technical aspects than perhaps others do.) Overall, I ended up liking the characters and rooting for their relationship, but I wasn't drawn in to the romance in the way I really want to be when reading a romance.
But overall the novel is well-written and engaging. I was pleased at the world-building and way in which historical and fantasy elements were combined. The characters are well-drawn, including the more minor characters. Some steampunk novels feature characters that feel like interchangeable cardboard cut-outs made to fulfill certain narrative roles, but these feel like real people, three-dimensional, flawed, and believable.

Some steampunk novels feature characters that feel like interchangeable cardboard cut-outs made to fulfill certain narrative roles, but these feel like real people, three-dimensional, flawed, and believable.

Last year I have read and thoroughly enjoyed Nefertiti’s Heart, so I was excited when a sequel landed in my greedy paws. I had to celebrate it with quick re-read of Nefertiti’s Heart, to freshen up my memory of important facts. Mostly, how awesome Cara is and how much sparks do Cara and Nate make together. Mmmm… Simply delicious. If you haven’t read the first book in Artifact Hunters series, go and read my review of Nefertiti’s Heart. If you did, continue reading to find out what Hatshepsut’s Collar has in store for you.
The plot of Hatshepsut’s Collar happens six week after the events in Nefertiti’s Heart. We get to hang out with all of our favorite characters again. Cara is feisty firecracker, nothing slows her down. Nate is obtuse and always tries to do everything his way. And you know what that means – there will be delicious, sparkling conflicts between them again.
“If he’s pulled this stunt just to get me to wear his ring, I’ll kill him myself.”
There is a bit less banter with Jackson, but there will be Miguel, another Nate’s employee, to make things interesting. Fraser, inspector with Her Majesty’s Enforcers, has a very small appearance in this book. I was sad because I liked his interactions with Cara.
Another Egyptian artifact is going to make problems for our heroes. And you can guess by the title – it’s Hatshepsut’s collar. This time troubles caused by this object will be even worse. Cara and Nate will have to travel from London to Saint Petersburg. Prepare for some wonderful architecture, glamorous balls and harsh Russian winter.
And I am going to tell you a little secret: Dragons will have a small appearance in this book! That was the only thing missing to make this series more awesome.
I won’t lie to you. I do not read this kind of books for deep characterisation. I read them for action, plot twists that keep me on the edge of the seat and some great romantic scenes. A.W. Exley is not going to get Nobel Prize for literature. But the question is, do you really want that? Sometimes you don’t want a culinary masterpiece. You just want a fat, juicy burger. It’s not healthy, but it’s so yummy!
Hatshepsut’s Collar is a solid sequel that continues the story about Cara and Nate in the same thrilling manner. I enjoyed it and can’t wait for the next book: Nero’s Fiddle.
Recommended for all fans of paranormal romance or urban fantasy with a bigger focus on love story (like Night Huntress series). If you like historical London with slight steampunk flare, kick ass heroines, romance full of angst and sparks, bad boy heroes, action, adventure, chase… Artifact Hunters is a series for you.

So Ms. Exley came a' calling once again and I answered. Screamed is more like it. I've been excited to read this book, so I was ecstatic when she asked if I wanted a copy.
I was like...hell yes!
I've got to say it. I love our main characters Cara and Nate together. They are just so cute and complete each other so completely (unless you've read Nefertiti's Heart, you'll never guess how completely). Even though Nate has grown a bit soft, Cara is still the fireball that you love to love. She's still adventurous and daring and how can you hate on that? Nate is still cunning and sexy, but like I said, a little softer than he was in N.H. I thought his personality was perfect in the first book–an exquisite combo of good boy and villain. In this book he was more good boy than I wanted him to be, a lot more in touch with his feelings than I cared to know. I like them BAD with good hearts. Always have. But I like 'em mostly bad. It's always so much fun to read about bad boys, and we all know it.
Then there was Nan and Nessy...what a mess these two were! Too funny and they weren't even in the book that long. We also met a few new characters who added quite a bit of spice to the plot and I really hope to see them all again in future books.
There was a lot more adventure and Steampunk elements in this book and that's why it got a higher rating. It had what was missing from Nefertiti's Heart. There was a very awesome jail break, some pirate business, royalty (Queen Victoria and Prince Albert), another great artifact, and a mythical creature (or two) that had me squealing with glee! You know what else I loved? The fashion. Cara's clothes were cool in book one, but in this one they were bad ass! Loved that!
The pacing was great and I liked that it was multi-POV. We got to hear Nate's voice and even the queen's! Very cool. It got a little confusing at times because there were sudden POV jumps, but not too bad that I couldn't keep up.
Bottomline, I'm a fan of this series. I'm excited for the next book, Nero's Fiddle. It's going to be more like Nefertiti's Heart looks like with a murder mystery and such, but involving Nan and Nessy. Yes! This is going to be a riot, I'm sure. So this is a YES to the recommend question. There's no way you won't have as much fun with this book as I did!

In HATSHEPSUT’S COLLAR by A.W. Exley, sequel to NEFERTITI’S HEART, a traitor to the crown forces Cara Devon and Nathaniel Lyons to St. Petersburg in order to clear the Lyons name, and along the way they encounter airships, pirates, Russian prostitutes, and even dragons. In addition to supernatural adventure, the book wants to be erotic romance, but in this case the two genres don’t blend together. The latter isn’t my scene, so I found the second half of the story, where the international espionage intrigue comes to the front, a lot more entertaining.
Explicit sex aside, I get the impression that the author wants the reader to see Nathaniel Lyons as dashing, brooding, sexy, and dangerous – a non-vampiric Edward Cullen. For me he simply comes across as moody, jealous, manipulative, and controlling. Dangerous, absolutely, but not in a remotely charming way, and Cara’s continued protestations and excuses for his behavior only weaken her character. Despite the fact that Nate tells her he makes no demands of her, their entire relationship is based around his purposeful seduction of Cara, a rape survivor, in order to possess her. The author explains that as a result of the first novel, Cara and Nate’s lives are literally connected through the mysterious object called Nefertiti’s Heart, so any threat to Nate is a real threat to Cara’s life as well. She can never escape him, and, in fact, he can track her down through the bond – something he threatens to do more than once.
For some, the intensity of their lust and Cara’s repeated expressions of her own uncontrollable desire may excuse the unbalanced relationship, but it was a definite turn-off for me. It wasn’t until the world went to hell and there wasn’t time for animal sex that I picked up the rhythm of the story. Then it became a tale of spies, Cara made a fun female friend with a similar history of abuse, and the titular artifact attempted to plunge England into war with China. I wish the focus of the narrative had been there all along, but if you’re looking for a romance novel with a dash of steampunkish mystery, then you’ll probably be satisfied with HATSHEPSUT’S COLLAR.

Cara Devon is back and she’s ready to take on just about anything. The first book took me by surprise with how much I ended up enjoying it, so as soon as I saw this cover I just knew that I needed to read it. You can read my review of book one, Nefertiti’s Heart, here: Review
The world that Exley has created is so rich and vibrant that I feel like I could easily step through the pages and see the Victorian era, brimming with excitement and gossip. The steampunk elements are still incredibly well done and integrated so well that it’s hard to picture the time without them. My favorite invention has to be the steam-powered horses, which sound completely beautiful. Exley actually managed to surprise me with a few new fantasy elements in this one, but without saying too much so I don’t spoil it I will say that after my initial shock I really thought it was fun. Unlike Nefertiti’s Heart this book takes us out of London and into the Russia, with new people and a new goal. If you thought a steampunk London was beautiful then Russia really manages to seem like something straight out of a painting.
Cara is still her fiery self and she has a lot to fight against in this one. Nate has done some extremely stupid and just when Cara is ready to rake him over the coals for it, he gets arrested. She’s one seriously tough and independent lady, and I’m so happy that even though she’s with Nate she hasn’t lost that edge…if anything she’s more fiery than before. Nate does a lot of growing in this as well and I enjoyed finding out about some of his well hidden past. My favorite character however is Loki, who is probably the most delicious steam-punk pirate I have ever had the pleasure of reading about. I remember dying to know more about him in the first one, and this book gives us details (serious and sensual) abound! I really hope the next book includes some more airship flights because I don’t think I can get enough of Loki.
Overall Hatshepsut’s Collar offers the same unique mystery elements as the first book, while maintaining the fun adventure and sexy romance. This is probably one of my favorite Victorian era series right now and I really can’t wait until book three is in my hands.

When I started this series I really didn't expect to care for it. Now that I've read the 2nd book, I can't wait to read more. Love Cara and Nate, Loki and all the other characters in the books. The adventures they go on to retrieve the artifacts make me not want to put the books down. I hope Cara gets to see her dragon again!

Hatshepsut’s Collar by A.W. Exley (Artifact Hunter’s #2)

This is the second book in this series. I hadn’t read anything else from this author and indeed I don’t think there is anything else except for a short story in an anthology. When this happens I know I have either just found a great author or the first book is going to be their best work. For A.W. Exley this second book was just as good as the first and in fact I might have loved it more! After reading this second installment it makes me want to go back and read the first book again to glean more information.
The summary for the book is very vague so I am going to do my darnedest to keep all spoilers out. This book takes back up with Cara and Nate shortly after the end of the first book. Cara is always the narrator, but due to the bond of the heart forged in the first book we get rare glimpses into Nate’s psyche/emotions which make it feel like there are two narrators. I really liked this because Nate still has a lot of mystique surrounding him and this allows the reader to understand his feelings for Cara without having it spelled out.
Nate gets tossed in the Tower. Cara only moments prior to his arrest finds out about a betrayal from Nate that occurred years before they ever met. Before she gets to decide whether to keep or discard Nate for his treachery he is arrested. Because of their bond, if he dies, so does Cara so she must rescue him. Queen Victoria is wearing Hatshepsut’s collar and Cara begins to suspect something sinister is afoot.
We get to see all our favorite characters from the first book too (well my favorites anyway) like Loki, Miguel, and Jackson as well as get to meet some new favorites like Natalie, Nikolai, and Sergei. We get to do a bit of traveling in an airship and get a better understanding of what this bond means for our heroine and hero.
I pretty much loved every second of this book and can’t wait for the next one. While I understand Cara’s distress over Nate’s betrayal I can’t say I got as worked up about it as she did. Obviously, her past taints her view of the situation, but I think I like Nate more because of it.
The end of the book has an excerpt from a new series for this author and I must say that I don’t usually read those, but it was ~12% of the book so I thought I would give it a try and it has me hooked. I hope it gets released soon. Wardens, gargoyles, naturals…interesting and not done before as far as I can tell.

The adventure, suspense, humor, romance and mythology are rolled up into a light flaky crust of steampunk and sprinkled liberally with sexy steaminess. Absolutely delicious! Hmmm…I seem to compare yummy books with tasty food a lot. What can I say?

We are back again to Cara & Nate, a short few months after the ending of book one, NEFERTITI'S HEART. I was worried about the whole "second book" thing, where it just doesn't live up to the expectations of the first, but let me assure you that Ms. Exley is not one of those who have fallen victim to that. If anything, this book is even better than the first, with more highly charged emotions and sexual tension between our hero and heroine, more on the line as the crown gets involved, and these wonderful side characters who, in a few short paragraphs, attach themselves firmly to the reader as someone you like.
Adventurous, action-packed, and touching, when Cara finds out that her new love had dealings with her father, she is incredibly upset. She isn't given time to process it, however, or make her anger known as the second after she learns about it, the front door is broken down and Nate is arrested! The crown is after Nate and demanding the return of some object that Cara doesn't know about. Cara needs to solve the problem and save Nate so she can kill him herself for lying by omission.
This was a kindle-bruiser, just like book one and I absolutely loved it. I hope that this series lasts as long as J.D. Robb's In Death series (up to book 38 now, I think?!) as they track down artifact after artifact, keeping the two main characters as well as their friends and adding more and more. I will read each and every one of them. Romantic, a hero that doesn't suffocate the heroine despite his instincts to put her in a cage to protect her, a heroine that understands that need and yet is willing to walk away from love to stay true to herself, tons of action, rakish friends, a grandmother and aunt who are as hilarious and outspoken as Grandma Mazur (Janet Evanovich), I can't get enough and eagerly await the next installment.

Romantic, a hero that doesn't suffocate the heroine despite his instincts to put her in a cage to protect her, a heroine that understands that need and yet is willing to walk away from love to stay true to herself, tons of action, rakish friends, a grandmother and aunt who are as hilarious and outspoken as Grandma Mazur (Janet Evanovich), I can't get enough and eagerly await the next installment.

I don't know why but I didn't like this one as much as the first book.
I love ancient Egypt................this book not so much.
Hatshepsut's collar is this giant gaudy sounding necklace with two beatles that can come to life.
Queen Victoria decided to put it on for some unknown reason and became insane: or more insane depending on how you look at her.
The prince consort tries to take the thing off and the necklace comes to life.
The collar itself is supposedly Hatshepsut's weapon. She used it to unite her people in a time of misery. Then she conquered her enemies and expanded Egypt. Victoria wants to do the same. She issues a proclamation where every able bodied man/boy must enlist in the army.
When it turns out not to be enough, she issues another proclamation where every man/boy must enlist. The women can step up and work the factories and farms.
Victoria needed to conquer and rule the world. America, China, Russia, etc would bow down before her.
Cara and Nate have their own problems
1) They got married three years ago via proxy (Cara just found out).
2) Nate is arrested and is on his way to be beheaded. Yup! Victoria decided to bring it back.
The ending seemed rushed to me. It didn't seem like they really tried to find an alternate solution. That death was really a sacrifice that didn't really need to happen. JUST STATING MY OPINION.
I mean Nate and Cara were more focused on Nate and Cara than saving the world from another World war. I mean ripping off the collar from Victoria's neck was the best they could come up with.

It's a followup to the first book, but focused on developing the romance between main characters rather then on mistery.
We still have a very nice blending of fantasy and historical elements - loved the bit about Prince Albert, even if the end was predictably sad - with luscious descriptions of steampunk contraptions, sceneries, fashion; but it also sports the same technical problems: misspellings, weird punctuation, repetitions (with a couple of blatantly copy-pasted sentences from Nefertiti's).
Cara's trauma-related fears fall a bit of of place, since she healed so quickly in the previous installment; the fact the main couple is awesomelly perfect at everything they do (in addition to their unparalleled good looks) doesn't really endear them.
The adventure in Russia was a cute distraction but not really needed: the artifact-related problem was relegated to some filler lines, almost completely ignored until the end, and some of the side characters are MIA.
Since they have a sort of official secret mission, now, I hope we'll see more investigating action and lore, and less not-really-there relationship crisis in following books.
Also, the story ends at 88%, the rest being the start of another series by the same author.

This was actually a 4.5 stars book. It was very well written, the plot was very catching and never boring. The world building really well done.
The only reason why I give 1 star instead of the 4.5 that deserves is that I really didn't like the hunting scene when they shoot to kill a rabbit and a fox to "show off".
This bloodthirsty show seemed totally out of character and left me quite disappointed.

now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.
The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.
i would highly recommend this author and this book.

Cara and Nate are virtually living together after the events of book 1 *gasp* causing more shocks to society.
But she wants to continue her quest to help ladies in distress. Today’s job is getting back a ring from a Trickster, who turns out to be Nate’s pirate captain, Hawke. Tricky indeed.
But Nate’s sometimes borderline activities have upset the Queen, who has him arrested for Treason. Which is not her usual method.
Now the two are linked by Nefertiti’s heart, if he’s executed, Cara will die, too.

And now dragons.

It was good BUT had a lot of editing errors - clamoured instead of clambered OR as though instead of although… things like that. And some of the sentences are so badly formed it stops me reading to try and work out what she meant.

I loved the second book in this series as much as [if not a teeny bit more] I did the first. This is shaping up to be a favourite series.
I love the characters in this action-packed world. Cara is the perfect combination of badass chick, clever strategist, and young romantic girl [even if she fights THOSE urges with everything she has!]. She is smart, courageous, determined and spunky. I love how she demands to be equal - to Nate, to his men, to the villains she faces - to the men in her world, and she deserves to be, too!
The romance between Cara and Nate took a bit of a back seat to the adventure they are on in this story, but it was still there. The author does a great job of balancing the action and the adventure with the developing relationship between Nate and Cara. It works well. I felt like I got just enough of both.
And the plot in this book is very clever. There is another artifact causing trouble, and without giving spoilers, let's just say that the artifact, and the trouble it causes are pretty dramatic. Nate and Cara have their work cut out for them to save the world.
I love the world the author has created in this series. I like the Victorian era, and the addition of steampunk elements - cool machines, inventors, etc. - adds a nice extra flavour to the magical artifacts stories.
Basically I like everything about this series so far. I look forward to reading more in this world.

I did enjoy this book, however not as much as the first one because I found there was less anticipation keeping you on the edge of your seat. Cara and Nate now seem to share the main characters role where as I preferred it in the last book where it was mainly Cara.
The book was still very exciting with Nate being imprisoned for treason at the start and Cara and Miguel rescuing him from the Tower of London, using a submarine they had invented. The collar made for a interesting artefact with it driving the wearer to madness and greed for countries. Duke Nolton made a great adversary who kept Cara and Nate on there toes as he tried to gain the crown and England for himself.
The dragon eggs was a big shock I wasn’t expecting them in this novel but nonetheless made for a great addition and an ingenious way for Nate to propose. Having Nolton try to drown Nate was a great way at furthering expanding on the bond of Nefertiti’s heart between him and Cara, as I was shocked she was able to breathe for him.
The book came to a very abrupt ending with them back in London and the queens husband taking off the collar from her neck which kills him. It seemed slightly rushed but I’m glad Nolton ended up in the noose for his treason. What I did like about the ending is that the queen is now sponsoring Nate and Cara to collect all these dangerous artefacts and keep them hidden or destroyed on a secret built county estate.

As much as I said I would probably read the series because I like the idea of it, Hatshepsut's Collar has put a noticeable damper on that idea. It pretty much abandons steampunk and leans hard into fantasy elements, and the book spends its plot as if it can't decide whether it wants to focus on political intrigue, action, or romance, all in service of giving Nate and Cara a reason to hunt down every single artifact in the late Lord Devon's collection, as if they didn't have several reasons already. This book also takes a sudden turn away from Cara's past trauma; it doesn't come up at all in the this story, which is strange because the fact that Cara was raped as a child was an important plot point in the last book (and this story is set immediately after Nefertiti's Heart, so there's no significant passage of time in-story to explain it). Also, Cara spends most of Hatshepsut's Collar angry at Nate for a stupid reason, and neither of them talk about it beyond "Why are you mad?" "Because I am; I can't believe you did that" until the epilogue. I will give this series one more book to shape up into something decent, but if Nero's Fiddle is just as bad as this I'm deleting the other books without reading them. It just won't be worth the investment of time and there's plenty of other stuff that's better that I could be reading.

March 21, 2021I can't actually rate this one because after the first hour I threw in the towel. Cara went from a woman who has an abusive past to someone who publicly rubs herself all over some guy she barely knows. So she went from someone who could barely stand to have someone take her hand, to public exhibitionism in an incredibly short amount of time. Then there is Nate, the Mr. Cool of this story, he suddenly turns into a petulant jealous guy. Who are these people and why would anyone care. I know there is supposed to be a plot somewhere about one of Cara's father's artifacts, but all I've come across so far are sex scenes that have added nothing to the plot except to reveal that Cara's father somehow sold her into marriage. It's certainly possible, as well as probable, that something else happens but I really couldn't care less.

WARNING LIGHT SPOILERS.
I enjoy this series. The sexual banter is both fun and surprising considering the time
period. I also love everything ancient Egyptian and this book has a perfect blend of history and fantasy. Keeping that in mind the conclusion was pretty obvious. Considering Queen Victoria’s history there really was only one way for it the end. All in all an enjoyable book. The only bad thing I can say is about the audio book. The voice the narrator does for Nate drives me up the wall. Yes I know he’s supposed to be posh sounding and that’s fine, but she makes him sound more like fifty rather than thirty. My husband said it made him think of Alfred from Batman. Not who I want to picture having mad passionate sex.
