The Silver Legacy #1

Darkness Descends

Rate this book
Denny Silver is just a normal college student living a not-so-normal life in the most haunted city in America.

Sure, her lover is a ghost, but in Savannah, that’s not what’s unusual.

What is strange is the influx of supernatural creatures roaming the streets looking to start trouble—with Denny specifically. To fight back against the wave of demons, she racks up one unusual companion after another––from ghosts to witches to demons.

In her search for answers to her supernatural problem, Denny discovers that she is a born demon hunter, and, no, she doesn’t have any choice in the matter. Okay, so being possessed by an ancient demon doesn’t exactly fit into her life plans, but somebody has to do it.

Denny must either accept the mantle of demon hunter or stand back helplessly as the dark forces destroy everything and everyone she’s ever loved.

At least she can always pick up her sword and chain whip to go kick some demon ass. After all, it is her legacy, right?

If not for the lesbian protagonist, I would have put this book down very early on. The writing was not terrible, but the worldbuilding and character development were weak, and all of the continuity errors were driving me up a wall.

First of all, the romance. Or, well, lack of romance. Denny's girlfriend Rush is a ghost, and Rush was in love with Denny for 10 years before she confessed her love. Presumably they've been together ever since, but Denny never even says what her own reaction was. Had Denny been pining too? Was she shocked but receptive? I have no idea how Denny actually felt about her other than a few vague thoughts about how she "loves [Rush] more than she probably should" and that she'd probably never again have a girlfriend who was as attentive as Rush. Which, okay, but how does she even feel about Rush???? Why is she with her? What is their relationship even like? There honestly wasn't much there except mentions of "mind-blowing sex", Rush being jealous/possessive, and Rush calling her 'baby' all the time. This happened all throughout the book, where there was action happening but not enough development or feelings or characterization to flesh it out.

There were lots of continuity errors and plot holes, which got really confusing, and by halfway into the book I was ready to explode.

There were so many scenes just started with no context, leaving me wondering if I'd skipped a page somewhere. So many times where a few brief words would have given context or explanation, or helped me imagine the scene, or kept the reader's mind going in the right direction to absorb the next bit of action or dialogue. Like when a demon attacks a human and uses a knife to cut the guy's face and thigh. No mention of screaming or a shocked expression or any reaction from this guy, even though I can't imagine he didn't have one. Was it crucial to the plot? No. Was it a glaring omission? Yes! These are normal writing cues. Which frustrates me because the plot was semi-interesting and the writing had potential, so a good editor could have made it so much better.

All of that said...I might try the next book. It was kind of a rip-off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, complete with a Giles and a Willow, but I liked BtVS, and parts of the mythology in this book were kind of cool. I wanted to keep reading once the plot got off the ground (maybe at the 40-50% mark), so I'm willing to see where it goes. I just really hope the next book isn't such a frustrating read.

“Darkness Descends (The Silver Legacy #1)” is a fun audiobook, narrated wonderfully by Angel Clark.

College girl Denny’s girlfriend is a ghost, her father is dead, her mother is comatose, her brother is in prison, her older sister is a nun, and her younger sister is unknowingly dating an evil demon. Oh, and a local lesbian hottie turns out to be a witch….and she really has her eyes on Denny!

The story involves Denny learning of her family history, and her role in the newly discovered supernatural world. The story moves along quickly, and there’s lots of fun humor throughout, such as when a cop tells a football bully

“Son. You want everyone to know you got your ass kicked by a gay guy, a lesbian, and a witch?”

There’s not lots of explicit sex, just enough to move the book from a YA to a NA feeling. I didn’t like the ending, but this is book #1 of a trilogy so it probably had to end this way to move the story along for all the characters. So far, books #2 and #3 are not available on Audible. I hope they are in the works, and that Angel Clark will again narrate.

I recommend “Darkness Descends” as a lighter lesbian paranormal escapist read. It’s a little more NA than I typically read, but it fits well with the age of MC Denny. Typically, YA and NA lesfic involves becoming aware of one’s sexuality and coming out to family and friends. In this case, Denny becomes aware of her inner self in a very different sense! 4.3* for “Darkness Descends”.

"A week ago, she was just another college kid with a dysfunctional family and a ghost for a lover. Now, she was being asked to do something she wasn't at all sure she had the courage or the desire to do."
This is the second book I've read by this author, and though I really liked The Pirate's Booty, this one... not so much. So I'm kind of disappointed. I'm even struggling with the rating here, I think I'll end up with a 3, but it's more of a 2.5 for me.

In Darkness Descends we have Golden 'Denny' Silver, 21-year-old young woman who happens to be living in a haunted city, where supernatural beings/events are fairly common. She, herself, is dating a ghost! At some point she discovers she's part of a family legacy of demon hunters, and after her parents were involved in a car accident, leaving her mother, former hunter, in a catatonic state, she's given no other option than to take that place in order to protect her siblings and friends.

What I liked: The characters were believable and likable. Denny isn't just automatically powerful: she has to train and learn about this new world to her in order to be able to fight (and kill) the demons. Said demons weren't the stereotypical red creatures with horns and tails. They can either be in spirit form, able to posses humans, or corporeal. Their only giveaway (as far as I can remember) is their red eyes only hunters can see. And the story was kind of interesting, though I felt it unfolded rather slowly (she finds out about her legacy, which we already knew about by the synopsis, 27% into the book).

What I had issues with: Every now and then, the narration switched perspectives and focused on a demon about to take some action on some clueless human to wreak some havoc. But I have to say, it quickly became repetitive (and even boring), with every demon remarking/repeating how "stupid" humans are and how easy it was for them (the demons) to accomplish what they wanted to accomplish. I mean:

Another thing was that I found the reasons given for two of the character's behavior to be weak, and I couldn't sympathize with either Sterling (and why she joined the convent, speaking of which, what's with everyone making negative comments about her for wanting to become/being a nun?), or the football player, Pat: . And also, there was too much swearing. I don't usually have a problem with that, but here I felt it was too unnecessarily much. The total count of the most used (and it's actually the first time I've counted them, haha):

- Fuck/fucked/fucking: 104.
- Shit: 73
--> Piece of shit: 10.
- Bitch: 21.
--> Son of a bitch: 7.
- Asshole: 18.
- Mutherfucker: 12.

Some other issues (spoilers):

Anyway. Despite all that, I did enjoy reading it, however, and maybe I'll change my mind at some point, I don't think I liked it enough to check out the other books in this series.

I was sent a copy of this book from the Author in exchange for an honest review.

I didn't really know much about the book before iI started reading, since that's the way i prefer, but I was positively surprised.
There's a lot going on, and I could've wished for the book to be a little bit longer, and maybe a little bit slower, if that makes sense. There was just a lot of informations all at once.
I liked the LGBT rep. It's always amazing when there's LGBT characters in books, and I didn't know that before going into it, so that was a big plus.

I would've liked more character development, since I didn't get the feeling of ''knowing'' them that well, while reading.
Also, the whole ''I'll tell you later...'' was a bit annoying sometimes, but I get why it's there.
There was a lot of namedropping, which I didn't like at first, but then I realized, that it's something I, myself, do in real life, so I ended up loving it.

This was a really quick read! All in all, I think it took me three hours to read it, so that's another big plus. I was in a reading slump when I started it, and it helped me out of it.

all in all, this was a solid and good read, so I ended up giving it 3.5 stars.

The concept is really intriguing, so I wanted to like this book more than I did. The writing was very repetitive. Instead of the demon hunting action I was hoping for, there was a ton of “encouraging” conversation. I felt like I read the same conversation between the main character and multiple side characters over and over. I liked Denny and her sisters, and I liked the concept of the legacy, so I’ll probably at least try the next book.

Darkness Descends was so much fun! Denny was just a normal college student until she learns that her family is part of a long line of demon hunters. It turns out that her parents' car accident was no accident, but a demon attack, and it's demons who framed her older brother for murder. Demons are also the reason her older sister joined a convent. Now, Denny is the current hunter in her family, and it's up to her to protect her friends, ghost lover, and family from evil.

I generally really like demon stories, and I particularly liked how they're handled in Darkness Descends. They're evil, of course, but they aren't part of the Christian idea of Heaven and Hell. They're their own thing, not connected to any higher power. They can be spirits kind of like ghosts, or they can be corporeal, which is basically the evilist of evil humans. Denny is a demon hunter, but she isn't magically gifted with the power to defeat them. Yes, she gets some extra sense, but she still has to train and study to be able to kill them. She actually really sucks at first, which was great! She has a lot more to learn.

Darkness Descends also has a really interesting romance. Denny's home has had a ghost in it for as long as she can remember. Rushalyn was always there, but didn't talk to Denny at first, waiting for her to grow up. Then when Denny turned 18, they became lovers. I'm sure that sounds strange, because Rush doesn't technically have a body, but she found a way to be with Denny, and apparently the sex is mind blowing! I loved how this worked, and that it wasn't some kind of cop-out. There are problems associated with it, and I liked that they were discussed. Although I was a bit saddened by that ending.

Darkness Descends was fun and action packed! There's always something going on as Denny learns about this family secret and takes on her inheritance. She also has to fight some demons along the way who think she's an easy target because she's new. There's also the matter of her younger sister's boyfriend not seeming right, her brother being wrongfully imprisoned, the hot witch who appears to want to be more than friends, and Denny's own demon! The only annoying thing was that there were no chapter breaks! Luckily, I read it in just two sittings.

Loved this book. I don't give five stars easily, but this time I couldn't help myself. Great story with a protagonist who kicks demon butt. Not the horned heads and forked tails of our typical nightmares, but the real demons we see on the news all too often. The class room shooters, the pressure cooker bombers, and of course the big names in evil, Hitler, Manson etc. The kind of evil they hold is the evil that only a true demon can possess and they walk in disguise amongst us. Denny Silver, one time boring college student, finds herself the holder of the legacy of her family. She is a Demon Hunter. In this book she begins to learn how to use the weapons she's inherited and what her destiny entails, while protecting her family, her loved ones and the city of Savannah. Can't wait for the next installment of this exciting new series.

Darkness Descends is the first book in the Silver Legacy series and revolves around Denny and her family. So I have to say, I am a sucker for "child of destiny" type tropes and this definitely hits that on the head.

Denny is just an average college student, who's world is rocked when her currently imprisoned brother admits that he actually didn't kill anyone and that their parents accident wasn't exactly what it seemed. Denny quickly learns that she is descended from a long line of demon hunters and she is "the chosen one", essentially. Now she has to learn how to protect herself and her family, while trying to keep her overly jealous ghost girlfriend happy and save the world. No biggie.

There's a couple of things that bother me with the book. I didn't quite understand why Quick had a sudden revelation of impending doom. There were a couple of consistency issues that really confused me. I also hated that Rush had to repeatedly say "baby" or "lover" in every other sentence and her jealous nature was a little much. I'm hoping these things are explained in the other books and that ending was a surprise.

I did really like the premise and the potential for more world building and character development in the next books.

1.5/5

I needed a fun paranormal story to sit around with, nothing too heavy, something light and fluffy that I hadn't read yet. This seemed to fit my needs, and though I laughed at our heroines lover being a ghost, I figured that's exactly what I needed. I was pleasantly surprised when our main character turned out to be gay and her lover a woman who's been dead for years (does this count as Bury Your Gays? It's iffy, but I'm going to say no), and queer rep is literally the only reason I stuck with this book. I'm so starved for genre fiction with queer protagonists, I ignored everything wrong with this. And there's a lot wrong.

There's some language that makes me uncomfortable. Homophobic characters throw around words I never want to hear, and if the author is straight, I will have a major problem with this. I know nothing about the author, so I can't say one way or another, but I don't think a straight author would put this many gay characters into a single book. And that's the thing. It wasn't just the main character, Golden, and her ghostly lover. She had another woman love interest, a gay man for a best friend, and like every woman she dealt with was into her. Normally, this would bug the heck out of me, but she's gay and is being treated like straight characters are treated. It was nice to see that for once.

Unfortunately, even gay characters can't carry a weak plot with even weaker writing. My biggest issue was the jumps into the demon perspective. It was a different scenario each time, but the same thing happened. The demon called humans stupid, and then did something to kill people. The first couple incidents threw me off, especially because there are no chapters in this book, only page breaks, but they made sense since it showed us and idea of what happened to Quick. After a while, I just skipped them until they were relevant once again because they stopped adding things to the story. We know demons screw with humans, we know they feed off pain, we know they cause bad things to happen, there's no need to repeat it so many times.

I appreciate the author trying to bring in a bit of suspense with the last battle, when Golden "gives up" her weapons, but there was absolutely no set up for it and it was obvious those weren't her weapons even though we had no sense of where she got the fake ones. Her personality changed so drastically in that scene, you know something is up. And she's not the only one who had a sudden personality change! In one of the first scenes, Golden rescues someone from homophobes, and one later approaches Golden when she's alone and he just admits he's a bully because someone rejected him, it's not who he really wants to be. That scene was....awful. It wasn't written well at all, it was sudden and unbelievable, and was really just a set up to let Golden really come into her abilities.

Nothing in this book is particularly believable, and yeah it's about demons, but I mean I Sterlings actions didn't make sense, Gwens actions made no sense, how was Sterling joining a convent saving the family? Why didn't Gwen just tell her kids what was going on so they could be prepared? Ames warned Golden right from the start if she shared anything with anyone, her training would end, and then she goes and tells everything to Brianna. This book was so inconsistent is gave me a headache.

I know I was super excited in the beginning about out main character being in love with a ghost, but once I got to know more about that relationship it made me super uncomfortable. Rush said she fell in love with Golden when Golden was eight. She watched this girl grow up, and as soon as she turned eighteen they became a couple. I had a similar problem with Priceless, where the love interest had been following her since she was like fourteen. It's gross. And Rush seemed to have died in the seventies maybe? So she's way older. Less of a problem, but wrap it all up in one book, and it makes me super uncomfortable.

I mean if you're starved for genre fiction with queer protagonists, this is a quick read. But it's also a painful read. Maybe there's something better out there? Maybe I just haven't found it? I don't know. Probably. Either way, this isn't a book I'll be recommending any time soon.

This is a new author to me, and I will be reading more by her. I enjoyed the premise of this fantasy novel, and the good vs evil theme. The characters were interesting and fit together well. The overall atmosphere for the world left me wanting to read more, always a great sign. I’m looking forward to reading more in this series and by this author.

(No rating. I don't think it's fair to the author to rate books I don't finish.)

I really wanted to like "Darkness Descends." A book about a lesbian monster hunter with a ghost girlfriend? I love that! I write that! But as hard as I tried, I just couldn't get into this one.

First off, there's that romance. Our heroine, Denny Silver, is dating a ghostly young woman named Rush. Rush haunts the house where Denny grew up, and has been in love with her since she was a child. That may seem romantic for a second, but consider this: ghosts don't age. The two met when Rush was twenty and Denny was eight. The book makes it very clear Rush pined over Denny for a long time, but waited for Denny to turn eighteen before she revealed her feelings and stopped "showing restraint."

THAT'S NOT ROMANTIC THAT'S CREEPY AF.

Rush basically said, "Lover, I've been waiting ten years for you to catch up so I can bang the shit out of you. You were such a hot third grader."

And she almost certainly would have prefaced this with "lover," since Rush and Denny call each other "lover" an average of three times a page. As young lovers do.

I made it to the halfway point of the book before I stopped, and in this time I saw no indication that there was any actual love between them. They have some sex, and Rush is jealous of Denny talking to other women, and Denny is committed to not cheating on her, but I got no sense they actually, you know, cared about each other with any genuine emotion.

But I could have pushed through this if it wasn't for the book's other weaknesses. First off, it feels like it needs a hard and deep edit. Concepts are repeated over and over again. Like, Denny finds out she's the latest in a long line of demon hunters, and she simply can't believe it. Even though she's dating a pedo ghost and is friends with a witch and a psychic. It felt like every time she learned something about her new life it was like, "I'm dating a ghost and I'm friends with a witch and a psychic, but demon hunting? That's crazy! This can't be true!"

This is a ridiculous line of thought to pursue once, let alone repeatedly.

And it felt like any concept that was brought up once would be brought up over and over like this. I got frustrated, like, "Yes! Demons think humans are dumb! It's so easy to corrupt us because we do most of the work ourselves. YOU'VE SAID THIS MOVE ON."

And this book full of verbal cliches. I admit this is a total nit-pick that likely won't bother the average reader, but it happened so frequently I actually started noticing and keeping track. Denny will need something "like she needs a hole in the head," or see a guy she "wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley," or realize "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree," or "run around like a chicken with its head cut off." It felt like everyone's dialogue was full of placeholders the author never replaced.

And this is also not fair, since I didn't finish the book and don't know what happens, but in the beginning there are back-to-back chapters where we see a demon frame someone for murder, then we learn that Denny's brother is in jail for murder and the case against him was open-and-shut even though he doesn't seem like a killer. I wonder if there's any possible way there's a twist where we find out her brother is actually innocent. Sadly, I don't wonder enough to continue reading.

Sorry "Darkness Descends." I tried. :-(

Darkness Descends was the second Alex Westmore novel I have read and it was another fun ride. I loved that this book drew me into the supernatural world full of demons, witches, ghosts, and demon hunters. What I loved even more was the inclusion of diverse characters, the main protagonist being a lesbian. The story follows Denny, a seemingly normal young adult whose life get flipped upside down as she learns about her family’s secret and is thrown into the supernatural world. Denny must discover her true self and her place in this new world.

I liked that the story was quick paced and easy to read. I loved the quirkiness of the characters and the light humor of the novel. However, there was an excess of curse words, which normally doesn’t bother me, but sometimes it felt a little to vulgar and unnecessary. The character development and action scenes fell a little flat for me at times as well, but I still really enjoyed the novel. If you’re looking for a light LGBTQ friendly novel with a supernatural plot, I would totally give this one a shot.

Thank you to Alex Westmore for sending this one along in exchange for an honest review.

I was sent a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review .

I honestly didnt know what to expect, because it was the first time reading one of the author's books. I honestly was surprised on the read . It was a well written book. I enjoyed it. It took me some time to read it. I normally finish books in a few hours. But because it was a slow read it took me a little bit longer than usual.
I like the LGBT representation because we honestly dont get that a lot in books.

Darkness descends is the first book in the Silver Legacy series and it revolves around Denny and her Family .

If you have time to read . I highly recommend it. I look forward to read the rest of the series. .

Goldens live so far has been one surprise after another. Her father dies and her mother is catatonic from a car accident, that is more that what it first seemed to be. Her oldest sister Sterling joins a convent, her brother, Quick, was famed in several murders and her girlfriend, Rush, is a ghost. Next thing she knows she’s stronger than ever and has a scary voice speaking for her at times of high emotion. Turns out she’s possessed and a demon hunter. Oh yes and her little sister, Pure’s, new boyfriend is a demon and someone has ghost-napped her girlfriend. It’s amazing how well Denny take everything in. Some would be utterly crushed under it all. I love Denny and her friends. The end with Rush was heartbreaking. I’m not giving up hope on them yet.

Found this book unusual and enjoyable. Loved the main character, Golden Silver, and the 2 main supporting characters Brianna and Ruth. Some of the other characters were a bit weak, hence the 4 star rather than 5 star rating,
Already got the next in the series and recommend this book to all lovers of urban fantasy.

Darkness Descends Golden (Denny) Silver is just a normal college student. If your definition of normal involves siblings named Sterling, Quick, and Pure, living in one of the most haunted cities in America, having a ghost for a lover, and learning your family is a long line of demon hunters. Oh yeah, she's the next hunter in the legacy, and has a powerful demon living inside her.

After being called by her brother Quick, Denny learns that the accident that killed their father and left their mother in a catatonic state, may have been caused by something much more sinister. So she starts researching, and quickly learns that not only is the supernatural world very real, it's very deadly. And very, very interested in her. Demons have kidnapped Denny's girlfriend Rush, (although, can you really kidnap a ghost?) and one is also trying to weasel his way into her young sister.

From Denny's pulling all-nighters studying about demons, their habits, and how to kill them, to her exhausting physical training to become a hunter, she soon learns that there is much more to life than meets the eye. And that whole demon living inside her thing, yeah, that demon needs to be fed. It feeds on other demons, and if Denny isn't careful, the demon inside her could take over her. For good.

Darkness Descends is the first novel in the Silver Legacy series by Alex Westmore. The Silver Legacy is the Silver bloodline, and also the magical items they use to kill demons. It was a highly enjoyable read, and I actually read it all in one sitting, staying up far too late to see how situations resolved. The book ended on a cliffhanger, but also at a good stopping place. It could act as a complete book, not requiring a sequel, and still leave the reader feeling satisfied.

It'd totally recommend it to several audiences. The different themes were well tied together, and having several significant characters being LGBTQIA was nice. It's not too terribly common in urban fantasy to queer characters presented so realistically. It's not thrown in as a subversive plot, it's addressed the same as any other quality. So it's got attraction there, it's urban fantasy, there's action, supernatural elements, and family drama. So another book that I'd recommend to most of my friends.

I received a copy of this book from Inked Rainbow Reads in return for an honest review.
This book ensnared me from the beginning. I just found so many of the plot points in it intriguing and innovative. Things don't always go the way Denny, Golden that is, wants them to go. But let's face it, if they did, we wouldn't have a story to read. This first book in the series explains how Denny becomes a Demon Hunter, and a little bit about what that entails. I think it's pretty awesome that her girlfriend is a ghost. And then further on in the book, I think it's a little sad that her girlfriend is a ghost. Total plot point there, and I did not expect the resolution that Westmore wrote. That actually blind-sided me a bit. I'm still not sure if it was a good thing or a bad thing, but it's a great story twist. I'm not sure I totally trust Denny's tutor, Ames, and I think there's a reason for feeling that way that will come up in future books. As far as her family goes, wow. Dysfunctional is a mild word, but Denny's attitude about things is part of what makes her who she is, and why she makes the choices she makes. This was a very good introduction to a new series, and I'm looking forward to reading book two. Why not five stars? Denny gets some points taken off because there was a lot of hemming and hawing about what choice she was going to make, about whether to step into this paranormal world or not. The problem is, I never got the feeling that there was any other choice for her. Everybody spoke about the plans and dreams Denny had for her life, but I never figured out what they were. As far as I was concerned, there wasn't much that was keeping her from following in her mother's footsteps. And based on her own values, there wasn't really any other option she could choose, so I never believed she was conflicted about it at all. Since I didn't believe in the conflict, it got a little annoying to hear her keep trotting it out as an excuse for holding back. But that was such a minor, minor thing, that I have no problems recommending this book. If you like paranormal stories, this is one you shouldn't miss.

Alex Westmore's "Darkness Descends" is a gem of a novel. In book one of the Silver Legacy series, Denny (Golden) Silver is just your average 20 something collage student trying to make good grades and support her little sister after her parents were involved in a car crash that killed her father and left her mother in a vegetative state. But her life is about to take a massive turn that will change everything she knows to be true about the world. Although she has a ghost for a girlfriend, which is strange enough, there is no way she ever thought that she would become close friends with a true to life witch or be facing up against the nastiest demons as the legacy of kickass demon hunter is thrust upon her. Now she has to train to learn the ways of the hunter so that she can become the legacy hunter that she needs to be and take over the family legacy so as to keep all those she loves and cares about safe.

I personally love supernatural/paranormal stories. I especially love them when they are well written. Alex Westmore has managed to take us into the depth of evil with Darkness Descends. She has written a novel that engages the reader from the get go and keeps the pages turning until the end leaving you with the feeling of wanting more. She has managed to put her own style and twist with just a little bit of humour on the genre to give the reader that fresh feeling of reading something new. We see a different side of the evil that lurks in the corners of society and brings a fresh perspective to the demons that do our bidding. Even though there were a few minor grammatical and spelling errors which her editors and publishers should have tidied up I did not think this warranted bringing my rating down as it did not affect my overall enjoyment of the book. Well done Alex, 5 stars for Darkness Descends and I can't wait for the next book in the series as I'm sure that this family has many adventures to follow!

Book #1 The Silver Legacy

I was really looking forward to reading this book. So much so that I pushed some other books that I downloaded aside to read this one. Alas, I was disappointed in many ways. This story had so much potential. I was hoping it would be like Meg Cabot's Mediator series. Only with lesbians.

Because I realized quickly that this wasn't going to be like that, I had to gut through the story (speed-reading at times,) to finish it. It would have been so much better if it lived up to the hype. Instead, it felt like same old same old dressed up in ghosts, witches, and demons.

oh well. If you are looking for a ghost love story, of the lesbian variety: look elsewhere. The ghost deserved better anyway. The protagonist .

There is a lot of sentence structure/grammatical errors throughout this book. Usually, I can gloss over them, but with the way this book turned out, it was just another knock against it. This story also uses too many big words. Big words are fine, but in this story, it just came off as sounding snotty. Also, there are no chapters in this book. That bugged me to no end. How can you stop reading a books that has no chapters and only ***'s as guides? The *** seemed to alternate between narratives from demon/hunters and Denny. That was confusing to me. At times, this story read like a movie. Also, the story dragged. Maybe it was just the set up for the series...but seriously? A good seventy-five pages could have been chopped her to tighten the story and make it flow better. I'm sure it's fine for other readers, and I may be biased in that I was hoping for a lesbian "The Mediator," but in the end, it just wasn't what I expected at all.

One star. Sorry, not sorry.

Wow! What a ride!
Enter the world of Golden Silver, a sister, lover, friend and one determined demon hunter. Against the back drop of the city of Savanah, Golden, Denny to her friends is hurled head first into a situation she never knew existed. After she discovers her secret legacy, Denny is forced to make a decision. Should she follow in the footsteps of her ancestors and pursue the evil that hides within mankind, or take her sister and run. Our hero is not a runner! She is a lover and a fighter and as it turns out pretty good at both. With a group of friends, having their own set of skills, she’s fighting demons while she learns the twists and turns of the supernatural world. Rush, Denny’s lover, is a ghost and even so they have a relationship most of us wish we had. Brianna a Wiccan is a living breathing woman who is drawn to Denny like a moth to a flame. Pure, Denny’s teenaged sister, is a handful and all that that implies.

Alex Westmore has created a world where we are forced to look at the evil that men do. The lone wolf gunman, the serial killers, the men who twist the weak minds of others to do their bidding, are these people the product of society or a deeper evil? DO we get so wrapped up in naming the evil that we never see the actual cause?

A well-crafted story that will keep you turning pages, Darkness Descends is a wild ride indeed! You the reader will learn the secrets of Denny’s legacy as she does one page at a time. I for one cannot wait for the next story in this series as Denny and her loved ones will no doubt find more darkness to battle.

WOW, WOW, WOW did I luck out!! This was one hell of a kick @$$, demon possessing & hunting, Witch & Ghost "loving" (in every sense of the word), Supernatural World traipsing & dallying, coming of age rollercoaster ride that left me wanting more....PRONTO! Is Urban Fantasy getting hotter by the day? Absolutely! Has the whole Demon hunting thing been frequented a bit lately? Undeniably! But this Demon hunting Urban Fantasy book was not only hot but cutting edge to boot ;-) These demons weren't the red faced, horned head, forked tail, Angelic foe sort. These demons were the ordinary looking shmoes like Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Mengele et al. There were spirit demons that didn't have their own bodies and liked to possess easily corruptible humans and there are those that did have bodies that still liked to corrupt but what do they all have in common? What did they all really want out of Life? To create chaos, mayhem and bedlam!! Their views being that "Humans could seldom get out of their own way, and usually all it took was a little push to get them started on their downward spiral. Still, the mission was always about making as big a splash as possible so the ripples would reach as far as they could reach". We get to learn all about the butt kicking MC, Golden Silver (aka Denny). We discover all about her Legacy and demonology etc...we live it alongside her and MAN OH MAN was it fun...and engrossing... and an awesome way to spend the day. I am psyched for book #2!

I really liked this urban fantasy - it was an interesting new world to me, the characters were great, and the emotion real. Once finished I immediately bought the next book to read!

Golden “Denny” Silver is living a normal life, well close to a normal life as possible, when it begins to take a turn when she pays a visit to her brother. Not only does she find out that she’s a demon hunter, she finds out she’s part of the Silver Legacy which she may not have a choice in the matter. Denny needs to learn quick in order to save the ones she loves and cares about.

This book is a real page turner as it made me want to find out more about Denny’s supernatural world containing ghosts, demons, demon hunters and more. I love that the main character is such a strong one and kicks demon butt. Besides the main character, the secondary characters are interesting as well and I can’t wait to find out more about them.

I thought that Alex Westmore did a good a job of answering questions we may have as readers, for instance, why the legacy passed on to Denny and not her older siblings. I did notice a few grammatical errors, but that didn’t deter me from reading the book. Although there were no chapter markers, it was easy enough to follow as it jumped from scene to scene.

So far there are three books published to this series and I will definitely be picking up the other two.

I was given a copy of this book by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

It takes a lot of terrible to make me drop a book with a lesbian protag. Hell, that's nearly all I read nowadays. But as someone who actually dabbles in witchy stuff (yes, witchy! It's not a bad word!), the supernatural elements of this book quickly became unbearable.
My biggest issue is that there are so many words related to pagan beliefs that are used incorrectly. I'd forgive it if this was all obscure information, but everything is so easy to Google.
First: witch and Wiccan are not at all synonyms. A witch is someone who practices magic and may or may not be Wiccan. A Wiccan is someone who practices the Wicca religion and may or may not be a witch. It's like saying "worshipper" and "Christian" mean the same thing.
Second: Scrying and psychometry are pretty much opposites. Scrying is divination, using some method to try and predict the future. Psychometry is being able to learn about people and events related to an object whose history is unknown to the one doing it, simply by touching the object.
The plot is so incredibly generic and once the whole demon hunter secret happened, it became a slog to read through, especially when I know there's just gonna be more that's so wildly inaccurate about the type of beliefs I practice.
