If you were ever in doubt whether comic books deserve to be considered a proper art-form, you need only to check out this two volume story by Jean-Pierre Gibrat. His use of fine line drawing and aquarelle painting for his panels is without equal in the field. The colour palette and the expresivity of his character portraits almost make me ignore the actual story behind the artwork, but I went back and re-read each passage, and I was rewarded with a powerful, yet understated personal drama that includes romance, war, politics, friendship and an irrepresible zest for life amid all the privations under the German Occupation.

lucien

The main character is Lucien, a young man who escapes from a train taking him to a forced labor camp in Germany just before said train is destroyed in an Allied bombardment. Now everybody in his village believes him dead, so he has to hide in an abandoned school. From a window up high he witnesses his own funeral, the passing of the seasons, the villagers going about their life in the town square, he spies on his fiancee Cecile through a telescope, and he follows from afar the conflict between the local Resistance and the collaborationist militia. The reader joins Lucien in his leisurely voyeuristic activities, later following him on nighttime prowls trough the empty fields or streets, and finally in the second album, reuniting with Cecile and getting mixed up with the Resistance.

The real star of the story for me was the (imaginary?) village of Cambeyrac, cca. 1943. Situated in the mountainous region of Cevennes, in the south of France, it reminded me of places I’ve seen as I passed through a region now more famous for its Millau suspension bridge. Sturdy stone houses, narrow and serpentine side streets leading to cosy market squares, verdant fields and rocky outcrops around the village, sidewalk cafes, shady boules courts, stone fountains, accordion players busking in a corner – a charming portrait that is now drowned by busloads of camera totting tourists.

A minor warning: the story is adult oriented due to some explicit sensual content (Cecile is really HOT!). The pacing could be considered too leisurely by some readers more used to action comics, but for me the boredom and the tranquility of Lucien’s isolation were the whole point of the story.

cecile

The title can be translated as the reprieve, or, if you prefer, the respite, prolongement, deferment. All variants valid as they explain the sense of being stranded out of time and place as Lucien watches from his high window life going on without him. Will he be able, with the help of Cecile, to find his way back into the vibrant life of his picturesque home village? Will he join the fight against the Germans or consider himself absolved of all responsibility in his incognito hideaway? Or will he remain a ghost of the war years, slowly fading from the memory of friends and relatives? Read to find out.

amour

After this, the next Gibrat album: Le vol du corbeau becomes a priority.

Solid work of art; every beautifully painted panel worth framing. Genial individual character designs, and well-organized color palettes to convey various peaceful moods and gorgeous lighting. Pleasantly quiet story too.

Julien oficialmente estava “morto”.

I think the english translation of the title is "The Reprieve." I'd have liked this better if I'd have liked the main character better. He's a local boy in hiding, having staged his own death to escape being conscripted by the occupying German army, and he spends his days obsessing over his former girlfriend (and spying on her... as close to stalking as you can get when you're stuck in a loft and can't go out).

I love the portrait of the French village during wartime.

I read this in the Norwegian translation after I came across it at the library.
Liked the (very French) sense of humour, the twists in the plot. The art was a bit uneven, sometimes very good, other places not quite proportional.

I read this translated to Norwegian. A dramatic story from WW II France, well told. Humourous, unexpected twists in the plot. A bit dwelling at times, and I don't always share the French sense of humour. The illustrations are absolutely fantastic.
