A short story about free man of color Benjamin January (of the Free Man of Color historical mystery series). In pre-Civil-War New Orleans, musician Benjamin January is tasked by his obnoxious mother to find the missing daughter of one of the city's free colored demi-monde - who may or may not have disappeared voluntarily. But if she was kidnapped, who did it, and how can she be rescued?
Ranging from fantasy to historical fiction, Barbara Hambly has a masterful way of spinning a story. Her twisty plots involve memorable characters, lavish descriptions, scads of novel words, and interesting devices. Her work spans the Star Wars universe, antebellum New Orleans, and various fantasy worlds, sometimes linked with our own.
"I always wanted to be a writer but everyone kept telling me it was impossible to break into the field or make money. I've proven them wrong on both counts." -Barbara Hambly
This is a short, read-in-one-sitting, ebook featuring Benjamin January, the free man of color (and detective) in Barbara Hambly's series set in antebellum New Orleans. This tale concerns a palcee' who is feared to be kidnapped. January gets on the trail, tracks down the real story, and, of course, sets everything to rights.
This is the second in a mini-series of novellas Hambly created, based on her Ben January books. A pleasant read, but does little to progress the character or his story.
