3.7 Stars - Short and sweet for Widdershins fans

Book #3.4

A wonderful mystery tidbit that reminds me why I love this series and characters so much.

A little boy is missing. He loved the carousel... and our friends likes to save people in need and fight dangerous 'dark' visitors.

I LIKE - as always

A little exciting quick addition to the series. I love Griffin's POV and want more of it. These two crack me up though.
“We should hurry, before the fire companies arrive,” I remarked. “We do seem to find ourselves saying that rather frequently,” Whyborne replied. “It can be our motto. We’ll have it worked on a heraldic shield. I imagine it sounds far better in Latin.”

That was a nice little piece of pleasure. I really enjoy these short forays into Griffin's PoV. His love for his Whyborne is very evident in this outing. But the simple fact is, in a quick hit like this, there ain't no way to get anywhere near enough development for the supernatural background of the series. A nice little sex scene, a successful resolution to a quickie case, and the love of the two MCs are more than enough.

Simply put, this was another nice short in Griffin’s pov.

As these two race against time to save a missing boy, it’s made clear that their separate talents and smarts work very well together as they fight evil.

What I enjoy the most though, is their love and adoration of one another, and it shines throughout the narrative. It’s those little moments that will keep me coming back for more.

It has been far too long since I visited the fantastical world of 'Whyborne & Griffin'. It's my fault, truly, as I let myself get caught up in all my TBR's that require an official review, so to speak. I don't allow myself to feel too horribly bad, however, as my colleague reviews these books for Rainbow Book Reviews, and she does a phenomenal job with them!

In 'Carousel' Griffin and Percival are on the hunt for a ten-year old boy who disappeared from his bed after having dreams all week about riding the carousel down on the boardwalk. It's winter time now, though, and the carousel is all closed up. When the young boy's little brother describes the orb of light that came for him Griffin and Percival know they've got something mysterious on their hands.

Another exciting, but way too short, glimpse into their world. Now I have to get busy and get caught up with the books I haven't read yet. Yikes!

I don't have much else to say about this one. I do enjoy Griffin's POV. He's such an open character, that it's not really needed, though I'm glad that it's incorporated in later books. Mostly, I like being able to see Whyborne through Griffin's eyes, since Whyborne's so self-effacing. This is also when Griffin first decides to look for his brothers, though I don't recall if that goes anywhere or not.

Carousel is a short story following a case of a missing child, linked to a carousel with extremely realistic animals.

As it's very short there's not much suspense or build up, but that didn't matter as the was more focus on the emotional themes. After the events of Stormhaven, Griffin is still feeling very raw when it comes to his family. Now he's facing a case with a loving family desperate to get their son back home safe. This short is told from Griffin's perspective so we get to see his inner turmoil first hand.

I love Whyborne and Griffin. Though it's a short one it manages to deepen their relationship even more.

Mr Hawk always comes with the spookiest stuff! I loved Griffin's POV, Whyborne's awkwardness, wicked magic and all the spoken and unspoken emotions felt on the pages of this short snippet.

I simply love it when we get Griffin's POV. This book was creepy because of the whole carousel deal and my irrational or maybe plausible fear of carnivals, fairs and the like. But these two? They are so lovely together that I will just leave this here and sigh repeatedly.

This was my home. Here with Saul and my Ival. Everything I needed was here in my arms: his body, his passion, him. He was home, as truly as any home I’d ever known, and the moments of peril only made those of peace all the sweeter.

Much like Eidolon, this is a companion short story to the Whyborn and Griffin series written from Griffin's point of view. It's always interesting to see how different - and yet, similar - his thoughts are from Whyborne's; it adds to the enjoyment of the full novels as well. In fact, if you have the chance to, I would strongly encourage to get to this one before reading Necropolis, as there are some things hinted at here which will recur later. In addition, it's an action-filled paranormal mystery which certainly kept me on the edge of my seat! If you're already a fan of the series, there's really no reason not to pick this up.

The thing with this series is that even the shorts are really good and entirely complete within themselves. This is a really quick look in with two of my favorite characters. Of course Ivan and Griffin are lovely together as always. The little pied piper type story is adeptly woven and completes itself really nicely. I really enjoyed this little vignette into our boyos lives.

Very cute! As always, I like the little bit of insight into Griffin (though I wish, since it came after stormhaven, we got more about his thoughts on the sorcery beyond the term itself). A fun little creepy plot as well that follows up on Whyborne's discomfort with the carousel in stormhaven. I wish there had been a bit more mystery to it but this one leaned more heavily on action and nothing wrong with that. A good tie in for the feelings of family that Griffin's going through, too.

I like these in between stories from Griffin's POV, but carousels are things of beauty and joy so a creepy carousel is just sad.

The curious incident of the child in nighttime.

After the events of "Stormhaven", Griffin is considering trying to find his brothers, but is also worried about being disappointed if he does find them. Before he can make a decision, he's employed by a desperate father to find a boy who went out at night and hasn't been found or returned, and there's something odd about the whole thing.

All in a all, a good, short read.

I already thought that carousels were rather terrifying before I read this, but afterwards I'm sticking with that conclusion. I think it will be wise for me to stay away from all sorts of carousels in the future because you never know.

It's always nice to read a story from Griffin's perspective, even if it's only a very short story. We all know how hopelessly in love he is with Whyborne, but reading about the way that he sees him and how much he means to him honestly warms my heart every time. It butters my croissants.

I'm really enjoying these Whyborne and Griffin novellas and I'm glad they've all been from Griffin's POV. CAROUSEL was a quick little mystery based on the carousel ride we saw briefly in STORMHAVEN and it takes place two months after that last book. Whyborne and Griffin are as fun as always!

Great fun to revisit. Griffin's head is always a refreshing place to be in these short stories.

Some New Favorite Quotes:
"I didn't think it would do that!" he protested. And he wondered why I considered his dabbling in sorcery a horrible danger.

and the moments of peril only made those of peace all the sweeter.

This was deliciously creepy. It was great to get to be back in Griffin's head again, and to get to see Whyborne through his eyes again.

"We do seem to find ourselves saying that rather frequently," Whyborne replied.

This is the second short of the series and like the first, it was told from Griffin's perspective. I actually loved the plot of this short, despite the length of the book. The short adventure of this book is really engaging It's always interesting to see things from Griffin's point of view and how he feels about Whyborne and the way he reacts.

I enjoyed the mystery/detective element of the story told through Griffin's investigator's perspective. Some of the interactions between Griffin and Whyborne were very intersting and entertaining. As usual, their adventure caused some pretty huge damage again and they just always seem to get away with it and kept it under wraps?!
Nevertheless, a great read this time around!

I'm not sure why I felt that case was scarier than all the previous ones...well, besides the automata marionettes and the fucking Weeping Angel-style Carousel animals. Seriously, my heart would not have made it to the hot, wet, sexy times there at the end if JLH had incorporated clowns, too. *shudder*

Creepy enough, that I will never be able to view or ride a carousel again. Loved it!
