The Last of the Dragons!

A fantastic trilogy complete in and of itself. Don't get me wrong there at least three more. The final battle was a surprise, an unexpected hero emerged, an old wound is healed between Elias and his mother.

It definitely has dragons in it...

...But much as I adore a dragon book, it can’t hide the fact that it’s pretty badly written. Or at least reads as if it’s still in first draft stage.

Nearly every sentence a character utters is 90-99% exposition. The characters are two dimensional with Elias consistently act in a manner inconsistent with his indicated nature.

The story is a standard ‘normal’ boy is destined for great things because he’s unknowingly fathered by ‘important/magical/royal people.

The writing is incredibly stilted and I kept stumbling over scenes before being left in a literary desert wondering why I was still trying to read.

Just started 2nd book and just can’t inflict it on myself any longer.

Decent not great

I found the first book almost not worth reading. It was short and did not really accomplish much, but by book two the story really picked up and unfolded. BOOK three was of an acceptable length to advance the story and it has a little unexpected twist. In all I found the first three books to be ok. If you read between three and four novels a week this one is probably acceptable, if you read one book a month or less you will likely be a bit bored and should look at a more notorious series.

DRAGON STONE SERIES ALSO AVAILBLE IN SPANISH FORMAT REVIEWS HERE ARE IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH FORMAT:

REVIEWS IN ENGLISH:
Book 1:

Kristian Alva has written a adventurous fantasy sci-fi book, there are dragons, necromancy and villains. Elias lost his parent at war time and his grandmother has taught him how to use just the basic spells, she has also taught him what herbs are used for healing so he has a chance to survive. The emperor has learned about him finding the dragon stone and had order his soldiers to retrieve it from Elias. With no other choice Elias had to run off so he wouldn’t be killed and now on the run, the fight to stay alive, he is not only fighting for his own life but the precious magic of the dragon stone as well. On the run with the dragon stone, on the run from the evil and corrupt emperor, both together, forced to find a way to survive, no one ever told him what the Dragon Stone could do, he just knows he must survive and keep the stone from falling into the wrong hands.

The plot is slow in the beginning and then it picks up once Elias finds himself on various adventures, meeting unique and interesting characters along the way that he seeks help from.
The book is a simple read but easy to follow, the part that really catches my attention is the dragons history. The history of the dragons is the part that rally catches is attention and is the part I felt was really well written. As the way it's written, you can feel the emotion, how hard it was for the dragons and their riders. Their used to be many, but they were being killed off, to the point of extinction but some were able to get away. The remaining riders kept to themselves. If their was dragons remaining, they were staying well hidden away from the chaos. If you read the history of the dragons and don't feel anything, re-read it again. Now Elias is not the only one fighting for his life against the evil emperor, the remaining riders are fighting to survive, the hunt is on for the remaining dragons, and the fight for justice against a great evil is what keeps them going. The fight for freedom, happiness, and the right to live their life.

I enjoy Dragon Stone very much for a young adult reader, but even for a young adult I think Kristian could have verbalized and express the story a bit more challenging, it was too simple. I wish she could have used a different name for the dwarf “Thorin” it's too soon for me from the Hobbit. The attempt annihilation of the dragons and the riders by the emperor reminds me too much of Eragon, which I enjoyed very much. Over all I thought the story had a great vibe with Elias adventures and the friends he had made, I just wish the book was longer it's the kind of story you just want to read more of.

Return of the Dragon Riders: by Kristian Alva
Book 2:

Return of the Dragon Riders by Kristin Alva continues from the first book, Dragon Stones: Book One of the Dragon Stone Saga. Return of the Dragon Riders is filled with action, adventure, magic, and mythical creatures. We meet familiar characters such as Elias and Thorin who are inseparable and are still being chased by the evil Vosper and those of them that follow in his wake. As we progress through the book we meet new characters, some quirky and fun while others have a more seriousness to them.

This story is a bit more graphic than the first. I think in this second book the author gives better description of the surroundings, the characters, the conflicts, I think the storyline and the detailing has evolved from the first to second book. I enjoy it more with suspense and wonder at the turn of the page. The intense feeling of not knowing who would be the traitor if there was going to be one. Elias is just like any teenager who wishes for his life back but we find out what it means to choose what we want and what really needs to be done.

I think Return of the Dragon Riders has grown not only with new characters and old characters. It also it gives some growinglife lessons to learn from. I enjoyed this story and I’m looking forward to the next saga, I think this is a great book for young readers.

Vosper’s Revenge (Book 3) by Kristian Alva

Vosper’s Revenge is book three in Kristin Alvas popular YA Fiction trilogy "Dragon Stones". Each book in this world full of magic, dragons, sorcery, and adventure have all been a treat to read. The series only got better as it progressed and this
book is no different.

Vosper’s Revenge has action, defiance, necromancy, betrayal, greed and the best of all dragons. Who doesn't like dragons? Especially in a war. Who do you think will come out in top? To add to the field of chaos in this entertaining tale, there are elves, dwarves and orcs, who of course don't get along.

Elias finally gets to learn about his dragon as well as to continue his learning about magic and spells. This book is great for young middle grade readers as well as high school. This book is also good for anyone who enjoys the world of fantasy, magic, action, adventure, and war. As the book progresses we come across a evil villain who wants to take over the world (a story as old as time but when spun right it doesn't seem over spun or old at all). With a good adventure comes a learning experience. Kristian Alva brings it into this reading that brings your imagination to its fullest. It teaches the reader about teamwork and that sometimes you have to be the bigger person in order to make things right for the better good.

This book has all the magic that Harry Potter can conjure up, but like him there's always others to help Elias make his destiny easier to face. I recommend anyone who dares to enter an adventure that'll suck you in to danger, and an evil king who will destroy anyone and anything that'll stand in his way.

Not really a trilogy but an okay read for the price.

Story-wise this is a soft fantasy dealing with dragon Riders. It's not a Trilogy as much as a segmented single story that feels somewhat aimless throughout much of it. The story I think would have been much better if it was from a traditional third person point of view instead of omnipresent third person point of view. Several times it feels as if the author cheats. It does suffer from maid and Butler dialogue particularly the first few chapters of the first segment. Still story was compelling enough to keep my interest while also being cringe-worthy with repetitive dialogue and some editing mistakes. At times I was strong enough to laugh and even tear up what other times I found myself rolling my eyes and shaking my head at the author's decision. There is a certain lack of tactics and functionality when it does come to the Dragon Riders and fight scenes.

That said I will be interesting enough to buy the rest of sagas story because the author has created the world that is fairly interesting. And I hope to see her improve on her craft.

The author used a marketing gimmick and halfway decent cover design to sell a single story as if it was a trilogy. It is annoying to be tricked as a reader and borderline false advertisement as a complete box set. I've seen several authors use this tactic and it is sort of insulting. What I have noticed though is some stories being more episodic and being labeled as trilogies.

This reads like a history book.

The first chapter starts out with a lot of exposition and an infodump that slows down the pace of the story. Several men are lying in wait outside a dragon's cave. Then we get several paragraphs to pages of information about the king's (who isn't even there) personality, the mage's (who is with the group) personality, and the captain's appearance and general appearance.

This series also has a lot of telling, instead of showing. For example, on page 9, it says "Dragon Hunters always travel with an apprentice mage who is proficient in spells." Instead of telling us about how proficient somebody is, how about show it to us a little at a time, like how Eragon slowly learned how to use magic by making a stone float and how it taxed his soul?

The first chapter of the first book was a prologue too. While I don't generally have a problem with prologues, the first chapter started with some people I didn't care about, and the action was so descriptive I couldn't remember what I read.

In the second chapter, we read about somebody in a normal village. I was already lost by then, with the overly descriptive first chapter and the switch to somebody living an ordinary life as a village boy.

The tenses also switched in the first several paragraphs of the first book.

If you're looking for a series like Eragon, I recommend Chronicles of an Imperial Legionary Officer, about Roman Legions, elves, dwarves, and more.

For everyone who loves a fantasy series with dragons, dwarves, orcs and a varied mix of main characters. Strong women, honorable men, these books have it all. I stumbled upon the first book by accident and have torn through the rest of the books, could hardly put it down.

It all starts with the discovery of a young man that he has a dragonstone and the ability to telepathically connect to a dragon forming a life-long bond. Dragons are almost extinct from this world after an earlier war and the subsequent hunting / killing of all but a few dragonriders. After he flees the house of his grandmother he meets up with a dwarf dragon rider who brings him in touch with a group of still remaining dragonriders who try to stand up against the horrible ruler Vosper.

This leads to all sorts of discoveries and battles, some lost and some won. Unlikely heroes are born, alliances are made and surprising betrayals take place but Kristian Alva takes us on an exciting adventure with lots of action and good character development. I was sad to have reached the final book and keep hoping for more.

I did receive theDragon Stone trilogy in return for an unbiased review.
I reviewed each book seperately and will include my thoughts here.

This series held my interest from the very beginning, filled with haracters I want to know more about.
The beginning builds the worlds and different populations.
When the tension is introduced it builds steadily. Danger grows and attacks without advance notice.
The HUGE revelation at the end...I am so happy I have the second book qued up.

Raised by his grandmother after his parents' tragic demise during time of war, Elias does not know his true family history. His grandmother is a healer, mainly with herbs and wild plants. She teaches Elias simple spells that help him survive, but warns him to keep his magic hidden.
Elias loves his grandmother and wants to please her, yet he is still a curious, impetuous young boy. Occasionally he does not make the wisest choices. When he tries to do something special for his grandmother and discovers a dragon stone in the process, he has no idea of its significance.
When word gets out about the stone, no one is safe any more.

Elias is sent on a journey, running and hiding for his life. He meets new friends, who seem to know a great deal more than he does about his grandmother. As he learns and travels we also learn the history and the significance. We also learn much about dragons.

Continuing on immediately following the first book , in the second volume the danger escalates extraordinarily.
Elias and Thorin are doing their best to get to safety but war begins quicker than anyone predicted.
There are still countries and breeds that refuse to take a side. This war can not be ignored.
No one will be spared, it can not be ignored.

We learn more about the huge revelation announced at the end of the first book.
There are some graphic, gory descriptions that may be difficult for very sensitive readers.
We learn more about dragons and elves and dwarves. Elias is studying his grandmother's grimoire.
Several new characters are introduced including identical twins who are mageborn.

Much action, danger and use of magic and military strategy.

Starting off immediately following the second and I believe you MUST read this series in order to fully understand and appreciate it. There are so many clans and races and unusual names, you need to read from start to finish to get the most from it.

I appreciated watching Elias grow and learn about life. It is this growth and expanded understanding that play a role in saving his life.
I enjoyed the descriptions of Nydeired, such as a bottomless pit capable of eating 50 chickens a day plus three camels a week. Elias is surprised to learn his bumbling adolescent dragon is a risk taker and thrill seeker. I can see that drawing them both into additional troubles.
Pay attention for wise life lessons as you read.

This book is more deeply written in the fantasy genre than the previous two.
They built the world and set the scenes for the major explosive confrontation which is the goal of this first trilogy. However, the ending is NOT the end.
I was sad to lose some well liked characters along the way.
If you enjoy magic and dragons and humanoid species, if you can suspend disbelief, you can get lost in this trilogy and will want more.

Overall the books were good. I rate the books I read based on: how I liked it overall, the writing style/technique, grammar and punctuation & the overall storyline.
Based on these 3 books, the rating is 3. I don't think I will be purchasing the next books as the ending to these three were horrible. I don't mind cliff hangers or anything like that but, I hate when it just has the feel like oh shoot I have to finish this book within this last chapter.
There was multiple grammar/punctuation errors as well. Normally I can over look those, but there was quite a few.
When I rate books, I'm pretty easy going. I keep an open mind & just read. I read at least 3 books a week, this week has been 7 so far. While I didn't hope for anything in this series, it unfortunately fell a little short. If you are into dragons and the like then for sure read the series. It's not horrible, I have read worse, it just wasn't for me. Who knows if they become free I may read the next ones to see what happens but I don't know.

Interesting story line, but....

Dragon stories, how many have been written since Anne Mccaffrey gave us Pern? Dozens of authors have tried to create new worlds, new variants on dragons. Few have succeeded. These Dragonstone novels aren't an exception. The plot, the storyline this author created is in a way unique and exciting. However her execution is sorely lacking. Her writing is more geared towards a younger adult, well more of a tween I'd say. It's a shame. Oh I read young adult novels all the time- even in that level one can find excellent stories. But many young adult novels still contain an expanded vocabulary, one that helps the author set the tone as well as enhance the story. This author's vocabulary was sorely lacking. It's a shame, these books could have been classics if only they were written at more then a fourth grade reading level.

Will I read then next ones set in this world? No. Definitely not. There are better novels out there.

Good fantasy

A lot of action with consequences. The good guys don't always live. There's a lot of information woven into the story as it progresses explaining the history through tales from older characters. As with any good fantasy, there's a prophecy, a hidden child who is the potential savior of the whole world, and boon companions who help round out his knowledge, maturing, and training. Evil bad guy that is all but invincible seems to be winning again but he does the one thing that costs him all and his downfall comes from an unexpected corner. This is a trilogy with cliffhangers leading into each book but there is a HFN at the end. There are 2 additional trilogies continuing the stories of this world and focusing on some of the same characters. Overall, an interesting read that I didn't struggle to finish.

If you like reading about dragons then this series will likely satisfy your yearnings for a good read with dragons. The first book starts out a bit rough but soon smooths out for an enjoyable read. The second book shows improvement with the author's skill and incorporates a better development of characters and plot lines. The third book is considerably better than the first two up until the very end where the ending feels a bit rushed. Overall the read is enjoyable and light with few noticeable mistakes. I received an e-ARC through Masquerade Tours in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinion.

Great story

I'm not really good at this but I'll try. I absolutely loved this story from beginning to end. I really became enthralled by the way the story developed.I love the way the characters were introduced to the reader and they grew in my mind and it was like you knew them personally.I can't think of any way to make this book any better, actually there is but not without ruining the story
Thank you for letting me Babel on
