Bleedthrough Effect: Controlled State

Rate this book
Zax has escaped the laboratory, but he has not escaped what was done to him.

Back with Micah, Comet, and the people who fought to bring him home, Zax struggles to reclaim a life that no longer feels like his own. His breakdowns become more frequent. He counts ordinary things to remain in the present, repeats mantras to remember who he is, and begins speaking to people no one else can see. Everyone wants to keep him safe, but locked doors, constant supervision, and forced psychiatric treatment make safety feel increasingly like another form of captivity.

Meanwhile, the Echelon Government announces that two highly dangerous experimental subjects are missing. As security sweeps move from Core into Lower Echelon, the promise of a massive reward turns the entire city into a hunting ground. Citizens begin watching one another, chasing rumors, and searching the streets despite official warnings not to approach the subjects.

When Zax finally rebels against those controlling his life and ventures out alone, he leaves behind a trail of sightings. Dr. Huxley recognizes the behavior as Subject 02 and realizes that Zax and Subject 04 are being protected by the same people. Armed with a reinforced cage, medical equipment, and psychological triggers deliberately conditioned into Zax during his imprisonment, she joins the government’s effort to reclaim him.
