Girl in the Song: The True Story of a Young Woman Who Lost Her Way--and the Miracle That Led Her Home

Rate this book
A fascinating true storyChrissy grew up surrounded by the beauty of love and the ugliness of pain. The daughter of a pastor whose church was located in a rough-and-tumble area of Brooklyn, she witnessed the ravaging effects of the streets on the lives of the most desperate—drug addicts, derelicts, and other destitute people. Yet her own home was a haven of warmth, filled with affection and love. Then something happened that tore her away from it. With the flip of a switch, Chrissy fell deeper and deeper into deception where haunting images and songs pointed to one thing—perfection. Longing to be the girl in the song, she became entangled in an obsessive relationship. Before long, secret after secret led her down the path to becoming someone she didn’t even recognize. Locked in to an impossible life, Chrissy found release from a surprising direction.Girl in the Song tells the gripping, true story of a young woman whose choices led her to despair and incredible triumph. More than the story of one lost girl, Chrissy’s experience points to the power of hope to lead us away from destructive relationships and into a life that just might end happily ever after.

real talk. i grew up with fresh wind, fresh fire, and this is the book for all the kids who maybe didn't quite believe that communion with God and a family of believers can change anything. it can.

Randomly came across this book, a sad but beautifully redemptive story. parts of it really resonated with me and fascinated me, I grew up visiting the Brooklyn Tabernacle many times, it was interesting to learn more about the inner circle of the church

This was a powerful, but difficult book for me to read. It is the autobiographical story of how God rescued the author from a life of destruction and pain. I am in awe of the honesty, vulnerability and openness of the author to tell her story in all its rawness. My system responded to the book, as it did to reading Crime and Punishment. My empathy made me feel ill for most of the book as the author recounts making bad decision after bad decision. As a father, this was painful. But the book is also a story of hope, forgiveness and redemption, so my emotions shifted dramatically toward the end of the book. I hope that this book will result in freeing other young women from following the same path.

A Story of God's Mercy and Grace

Chrissy is a girl who seemingly has it all; she is adored by her parents and the church they lead, she has many friends and is beautiful and intelligent. What Chrissy doesn't have is the self-confidence to find her worth in God alone, and she looks to males to fill that void. Unfortunately, as a teenager, Chrissy pursues a 21 year old man who only cares about himself. This man has no desire for a relationship with the Lord, let alone a proper relationship with Chrissy. Chrissy deceives all those close to her to keep a relationship with this young man, costing her a Bible University education and a career working for Estee Lauder, but more importantly it costs her the respect and trust of her parents. Chrissy eventually becomes pregnant and the Lord uses this situation for Chrissy to hit rock bottom and find that the only relationship she needs now is one with God. Once Chrissy truly repeats and gives her entire heart to God, she sees that living in the light is always better than walking in darkness with the world. This is an inspiring story of how God is able to redeem all stories and use them for His glory, just as the Bible promises.

Girl in the Song is a memoir by the daughter of Jim Cymbala, the pastor or the Brooklyn Tabernacle Church. I bought it because Jim Cymbala’s books are outstanding. Chrissy’s story of a pastor’s kid gone bad is gripping and held my attention. There are some parts of the story that are hard to believe especially her ability to be hired at great jobs – working for a large cosmetic company, leading a college choir with no training. Chrissy gets involved with a guy and gets pregnant without her parent’s knowledge. She deceives them repeatedly, sneaking around, stealing money and using their credit cards without their knowledge. She is seven months pregnant before her mother suspects this! They also were unaware of her obsession about her appearance and her never believing she was good enough. Chrissy was estranged from her parents after the baby came because she continued to deceive them. The outcome is positive with her repenting and returning to her faith in God and to the authority of her parents after the 1,000 member congregation prayed for her.

Every parent of teens should read this as a precaution. Don’t be a helicopter parent but do know where your teens are, what they are doing and what their worries are. And hold them accountable.

God has a plan for us, sometimes we see it, we feel it but mostly we just ignore it. I felt his presence while I was reading more and I figured he's always there in my heart, much closer than what I ever thought.

Little Thing She Does Is Magic” Stinga.

Every day the voice in the mirror said, “Not Good Enough”. And that voice began to dominate Chrissy’s teenage life.

A true story, Chrissy Cymbala Toledo writes of growing up with the loving support of her family Jim and Carol Cymbala pastors of The Brooklyn Tabernacle. She writes of the encouragement this church gave her as a child growing up in a tough neighborhood. Even so, Chrissy becomes haunted by dark shadows of perfectionism.

Obsessed by her clothes, her face, her body, she yearns to become “The Girl In the Song”. The song of teenage super stars, romance and sensational appearance pulls her into destructive relationships and deceptions that shatter all the trust of those who really love her. Chrissy’s life reels out of control until she loses everything that is precious to her.

Where is real significance? Where is true love? Chrissy looked at the very underbelly of society seeking a charade.

This is a story of God’s Grace, His power and His unrelenting pursuit of us. It is a story of excruciating loss and of triumphant faith. Chrissy’s story is also our story. Where we cloister ourselves in our unsullied consciences, where we clamor for approval in mere surfaces, our own mirrors chant “Not Good Enough”.

Yet as Chrissy shows through her experience, Christ does comes to us in the darkest anguish of our hearts. He meets us exactly at the point of our deepest need. Thankfully, it really is Him that restores our souls and it really is Him that leads us in the path of righteousness. And it is His work that is deep and permanent and perfect.

And as poignant as Chrissy’s personal redemption is, we see the astonishing power of the church here too. The vigilence of a body of praying people knows no bounds.

James 5 calls on all of us in the church to pitch in for one another in dedication and powerful prayer…

“Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises. Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him…”

Chrissy is a witness to this power and her story shows us that God is for us through it all.

Don’t waste another second. Buy this true story and read it. At the age of 72 I’ve read many books. My favorites are memoirs because they reflect real life. They show us the extraordinary way our lives can have purpose, and that’s the ONLY way to live !Do you want true JOY? Then find your purpose! God created you with gifts He designed so you can touch the lives of others. There’s NO MORE FUN than that ! He equips you right when you need it. READ THIS STORY, start the most exciting journey of your life, and TRUST Him to lead you! Find a mentor who’ll encourage you. What have you got to lose? It’s a win - WIN ! (HINT: Feed on God’s Word, an endless treasure trove of gems of truth and wisdom. You won’t regret it !) ❤️

I finished "Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire" written by Chrissy's dad, Jim, last month. Reading that as a precursor is not mandatory, but def gave a lot of beautiful context!

Chrissy wrote this book so beautifully. She was so brave for recounting incredibly hard scenarios from her life. I would love to hang with her over coffee and tell her how beautiful her book was!

"I had come to realize that when you step out of darkness into the light in a genuine way, you finally understand what a pitiful life the darkness has offered you." Pg. 256.

Overall, the Cymbala family are spiritual heroes I've looked up to from their writing. I wish I could visit their churches in person one day! It was an easy and quick read, but full of heavy hurt.

It's rare that you get the same nonfiction story from three perspectives: that of the father, the mother, and now, the daughter. I read Jim and Carol Cymbala's books before this one and found them both heartfelt and compelling. Although those books don't center around Chrissy, they mention the time when their daughter left their home and the burden it placed on them emotionally and spiritually. Now it's the daughter's turn to tell her side of the story.

This was a definite page-turner and a testament to a father's love (in more ways than one). Highly recommend.

The first thing that came to my mind when I finished reading this book was “pride.” Pride for a young woman I do not know personally, who shared her very painful story and life lessons. Not many people are willing to put themselves out there like that.
The story was very well written, and while it did take me about 5 days to read I could barely put it down when I did have time to devote to it. I find myself hoping she will write a follow up to let us know what has been going on in her life since that story ended.
Well done!

Chrissy tells the story of some impactful moments from her childhood that set her on a path of insecurity, obsession, toxic relationships, and fleeing from God despite being brought up in a welcoming church community with parents she loved as her pastors. As a person who grew up in the church, I found so much of this relatable to my own testimony. I too had years of rebelling against God, craving attention and value from others instead of Him, deep sadness, and sinning against my own body. Hearing Chrissy tell her story rang home for me in a lot of ways and reminded me of how far I’ve come thanks to Christ’s redemption in my life and the diligent prayer of my parents – just like Chrissy.

I’d you enjoy stories of redemption, Christian memoirs, inspiring nonfiction, and a happy ending…pick this up! You will leave feeling the awe of how Christ pursues us with His abundant grace. Chrissy’s story is an example of how there isn’t anything that He can’t take and redeem for His glory. Amen!! ❤️

Well written

This was a well written account of a young lady's move away from and return to God. It provided insight into her struggle as well as her parents' struggle to deal with her behavior. Powerful story of God's ability to redeem and give second chances.

The author could very well reach thousands of young ladies (and I pray she does) with the good news of God's path of righteous living in Christ. Not only that, her testimony of forgiveness and change will stay with the reader for a very long time. Excellent. So well written and timely.

Worth the read

A heart breaking story of a young girl who lost her way, but finally found her way when she allowed God to work in her life. A cautionary tale that would be terrific to use in a jr. high setting.
