Abandoned by her lover. Reunited with her father. Ardently pursued by a man who has vowed to never leave her side.
From within the protective walls of Sanctuary, Jasmine and her friends find themselves numbered among a throng of refugees fleeing a world under constant assault from all sides. The horrors of The Maya Virus were just the beginning as nations emboldened by chaos succumb to the temptations of nuclear warfare, religious zealots employ drastic tactics against their rivals, and Mother Nature herself seems determined to destroy all that remains.
As governments crumble and factions unfold, the pressure is on for Jazz to take sides and declare her allegiance, but the rules are unclear and the lines may not be as cleanly drawn as some would have her believe. An ancient secret society disguised as a wealthy corporation creeps comfortably into a position of power; a struggling republic determined to maintain some semblance of normalcy clings to what little control it has left; a faithful crowd amasses to worship a newly emerged and powerful figurehead of myth and legend; an unlikely army forms in obscurity, it’s awesome power hidden from all who would seek to destroy it; and then there’s Damien, quite possibly Jasmine’s greatest temptation to date.
The fiercest war mankind has ever known is percolating on the horizon. What would you be willing to sacrifice to be counted among The Survivors?
L. M. Smith is the author of the Jazz Nemesis series, a gritty, genre-bending saga where faith meets fallout and humor still finds room to breathe. Her work fuses dark psychology with mythic world-building, creating stories that are equal parts cinematic and uncomfortably human.
She lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, with her husband Charles—the most perfect man on earth—a sassy black cat named Pandora, and a pack of extremely wacky Great Danes named Kratos, Freya, Xena, and sometimes Roxy, one of her seventeen grandpuppies, who visits often enough to count as family. When she’s not writing, she’s gaming (PlayStation over Xbox, every time), overanalyzing dialogue like it’s an Olympic sport, or making elaborate plans to finish all the projects she started yesterday.
In addition to Jazz Nemesis, Smith is at work on a memoir and several nonfiction histories exploring monarchy, madness, and the mechanics of power.
I am not in the habit to rave over one single thing in a book but today I am making an exception.
I loved, loved, loved book one. And I loved book two but book three has me raving for reasons not mentioned in book I or II.
The one thing I am most amazed by is the fact that our Jazz has found her own skin, and she is comfortable in it now. The angst is gone and is replaced by an acceptance of all the good things and the bad things that makes me.... and it translates to the pages so amazingly that I am flabbergasted. Everybody always talks about character development but this is a step beyond. I have no technical term what I do have is a really strong female protagonist, strong not like superwoman, but like a woman that has faced her own skewed image in a mirror and flipped her own bad impressions, real or imagined off to say. Here I am world. Hear me roar.
I loved the book for many reasons but I adore it for the fact that I got to see a character come into her own in this manner.
I've been waiting for this novel for a long time. The first two books in the series had me at the edge of my seat and then left me wondering where the series would be turning. It was worth the wait, even though it made me late twice because I couldn't put the book down. After being held hostage in Book 1 and being exposed to other threads once she was free in Book 2, this time Jasmine, or Jazz, and her posse find little time for rest in their Sanctuary. This novel is much busier than the previous ones, with so much going on and so many surprises that it is hard to guess what comes next. Aside from a virus and other threats to human kind, there are supernatural and somewhat religious aspects to the story, corruption, power struggles and romance. Jazz is an excellent main character and Smith's writing style is immaculate. Very enjoyable and truly addictive.
I have been waiting on this book for a while now! This series is addictive to say the least. Several different people/residents are taken to a new town and given different talents/abilities. In this installment we find out what happens to them when they leave. It took us on quite the adventure, one I did not see coming. Let's just say this book will pull you right into it and it does leave you needing more. Can't wait for the next book! "It's starting."..."What is?"... "The Rapture." -L.M. Smith The Survivors
This is the third book in the Jazz Nemesis series. I absolutely LOVED it!
Jasmine Marshall (Jazz to her friends) is an intriguing character. I really liked her when I first met her in The Citizens. Thanks to the experiments done to her (and her friends) in the first book, she has the ability to feel emotions of those around her and has become an empath. Together with the others in her group: Piper (a vampire), Kaori (a teenager with power of telekinesis), Beck (a US Marine inhabited by an angel) and Gabriel (a feisty Scot with the ability to become invisible whom they met in book 2), Jazz finds herself taking shelter in Sanctuary, an underground bunker protecting refugees from the Maya Virus that is devastating the world. There she comes face to face with someone she never thought she would meet again, her father.
I have been wanting to read this book for some time. Unfortunately, due to my large reading list, it's taken me longer than planned to get to read it. I must admit that it's been a while since I read the second book, The Refugees, and some of the original excitement I had for this series has ebbed. However, this is not to say that my enjoyment of this book was diminished, only more tempered.
This is a fast paced, thrilling ride of rollercoaster proportions and has had my heart pounding with dread and excitement in equal measure. The story is so well written it felt like I was actually there, watching it all happen. I found myself turning the pages, just to find out what mysteries would be solved, only to have more questions pop up! This book is told through the eyes of Jazz and Beck. This gives the reader an insight into their thoughts and feelings. This book also has more of a religious aspect to it, what with the mention of Armageddon and Beck's angelic role in it. But, there is also a feeling of an alien invasion (like Independence Day or The Day The Earth Stood Still) with a mysterious artifact from outer space threatening the safety of the world. However, to avoid any spoilers, I'll not say much more. I will say that there are several twists to keep things interesting and a few secrets revealed, though more are still lurking unanswered in the pages. Nevertheless, the author has left me eager to find out what happens next. Although the book doesn't finish on a cliffhanger as such, it concludes in such a way that it sets it up for the next book, which I am now looking forward to reading as soon as possible.
L.M. Smith has written a fantastic psychological thriller that also crosses several other genres, especially paranormal fiction and dystopian fiction. I love her fast paced writing style, and the flow is wonderful. I have added this author to my favourites list, and will read any of her books in the future.
I highly recommend this book if you love psychological thrillers, paranormal fiction, YA dystopian fiction, horror or urban fantasy. - Lynn Worton
