इतिहासाचा एक धागा पकडून केवळ कल्पनेच्या जोरावर एक पुर्ण एेतिहासिक रंगमंच उभा करण्याची किमया दिवंगत लेखक मुरलीधर खैरनार यांना साधली अाहे. शिवाजी महाराजांच्या काळातील अनेक दुवे अाजही अापल्याला पुर्णपणे ज्ञात नाहीत. तसेच गेल्या दी़ड एक दशकात शिवाजी महाराज अाणि मराठ्यांच्या (इथे मराठे जात नसून वांशिक अोळख म्हणून अर्थ घ्यावा) इतिहास हा एक स्फोटक विषय़ झालेला असून स्वंतंत्र वृत्तीचे सिनेनिर्माते, लेखक, दिग्दर्शक सहसा याच्या वाटेला नं गेलेलेच बरे असा विचार करतात.
अशा परिस्थितीत या अवघड विषयाला हात घालूुन इतिहास अाणि कल्पनाविलास यांचा अचूक समतोल राखण्याचे कसब लेखकाने साधले अाहे. शिवाजी महाराजांच्या सुरतीच्या लुटीतील एक भाग स्वराज्यात पोहोचतच नाही या सूत्र केंद्रस्थानी ठेवून या कादंबरीचा विस्तार करण्यात अाला अाहे. या सूत्राशी संलग्नित सर्व बाबींचे अत्यंत सूक्ष्म तपशील अभ्यारपुर्वक मांडण्यात अाले अाहेत त्यामुळे संपुर्ण पुस्तक वाचताना कुठेही ही कथा काल्पनिक अाहे असे अजिबात वाटत नाही.
खोजनार पंथ, उध्दारत समाज, सेवा संघ यासारख्य़ा वास्तवाशी निगडीत असलेल्या संस्थांशी साध्यर्म असणारे संदर्भ वापरल्याने कल्पनेचा वास्तवाशी मेळ घालण्याच मोह अावरत नाही.
पुस्तकातील पात्रे, भौगोलिक परिस्थिती, अाधुनिक तंत्रज्ञानाचा वापर यांमुऴे एकूणच कादंबरी गतीशील झाली अाहे अाणि त्यामुळे पुस्तच कुठेही कंटाऴवाणे वाटत नाही. तसेत कथेतला थरार शेवटपर्यंतच टिकून राहतो. अाबाजी अाणि केतकी या व्यक्तिरेखांमध्ये रंगलेला हा खजिन्याचा शोध कुठे संपतो हे कळण्यासाठी पुस्तर जरुर वाचावे.
एकूणच कादंबरीची गतिमानता अाणि रहस्यमयता अाणि तिचा थेट इतिहासाशी असलेले संबंध यामुऴे एेतिहासिक कादंबऱ्यांचा एक नवीन ट्रेंड मराठी भाषेत रुजत अाहे असे म्हणायला हरकत नाही.

सुरुवातीचे 30 40 pages वाचून वाटलं परत एक Dan Brown, Ashwin Sanghi , Christopher c Doyle च्या novels ची copy तर नाही ना ...पण नंतर कथा मस्त वेग घेते.
शिवाजी महाराज्यांचा गनिमी काव्याचा प्रसंग (जो वणी दिंडोरीची लढाई म्हणून इतिहासात प्रसिद्ध आहे)डोळ्यासमोर उभा राहतो.
मोडी भाषा लिखाणाची पद्धती मस्त explain केली आहे भारतात available असलेला कागद महाग होता आणि आयात केला असल्याने वरच्या टोकापासून खालच्या कडेपर्यंत लिहिणे ,समास न सोडणे,दोन शब्दांत अंतर न ठेवणे, ओळीच्या शेवटची रिकामी जागाही वापरणे ...these all are interesting facts.

"फुलं झाडोरा म्हणजे देव , देव म्हणजे डोंगर,झाड,आभाळ,पाणी : जे तुझ्या माझ्या कामाला येतं त्याचा देव होतो. दगडाचा देव कोणाच्या रे कामाचा?" अशा सुंदर concepts आहेत पुस्तकात!

A.M.T. Jackson ( East India Company च्या काळातला नाशिक चा कलेक्टर : ज्याला अनंत कान्हेरे ने मारलं होतं. )शाळेत असताना जॅक्सन चा एवढाच reference माहीत होता. पण पुस्तक वाचून कळलं , की Jackson was well known historian, archeologist and anthropologist.

भायाच्या उत्सवात माऊल्यांचा वावराच्या प्रसंगाचं वर्णन अप्रतिम !

मराठी साहित्यात रहस्यमय आणि थरारक कादंबर्‍या अगदी मोजक्याच. हल्ली तर अनुवाद केलेल्याच जास्त दिसतात. अशा परिस्थितीत या विषयावर मराठीत कादंबरी लिहिणे हे एक धाडसच म्हणावे लागेल. लेखक मुरलीधर खैरनार या प्रयत्नात जवळजवळ यशस्वी ठरले आहेत.

१६७० मध्ये शिवाजी महाराजांनी दुसर्‍यांदा सुरत लुटली. त्यामागे दोन उद्देश असावे. एक म्हणजे स्वराज्याची तिजोरी भरणे आणि दुसरा म्हणजे व्यापारी मार्ग सुरतेतून मराठा साम्राज्यात वळवणे. मुंबईच्या स्वरूपात हे उद्दिष्ट सफल झाले असे म्हणता येईल. पण तो लुटलेला खजिना कुठे अदृश्य झाला याची आजतागायत माहिती मिळाली नाही. गेली ३५० वर्षे अनेक गुप्त संघटना या खजिन्याच्या शोधात आहेत ज्या पिढी दर पिढी यासाठी एक व्यक्ती नेमतात. त्यापैकी एक म्हणजे "उध्दारक समाज" तर्फे आबाजी. दुसरी, "खोजनार" संघटनेतर्फे कार्तिकी आणि तिसरा "शिलेदार" संघटनेतर्फे शौनक. प्रत्येक संघटनेचा हेतू वेगळा असला तरी तो खजिना शोधल्याशिवाय साध्य होऊ शकत नव्हता.

जेव्हा क्लाराला, जिचा पुर्वज, रीचर्ड इस्ट इंडिया कंपनीत होता, आपल्या पुर्वजांच्या सामानात मोडी लिपीत लिहिलेला संदेश सापडतो तेव्हा त्याचा अर्थ जाणून घेतल्याशिवाय तिला चैन पडत नाही. भारतीय इतिहासात रस असलेल्या एका फेसबुक ग्रुपला ती संलग्न होते जेणेकरून या संदेशात नेमके काय आहे हे जाणून घेता येईल. इथेच तिची ओळख कार्तिकी, शौनक आणि निनादशी होते. चर्चा करता करता तिचे भारतात येण्याचे निश्चित ठरते. याचबरोबर सगळी चक्रे एकदम फिरायला लागतात. खुनाची एक साखळीच सुरू होते. खोट्या आरोपात अडकवले जाते. शेवटी खजिना सापडतो का? आणि सापडला तर कोणाला? याची कथा एका रोमांचक स्वरूपात या पुस्तकात मांडण्यात आली आहे.

पुस्तक वाचताना एकच गोष्ट खटकते आणि ती म्हणजे भाषा. सुरुवातीला, गरज नसताना इंग्रजी शब्दांचा वापर करण्यात आला आहे. रीस्क, स्क्वेअर, मिस्प्लेस, गार्बेजबीन, ट्रीट, चेक असे कितीतरी इंग्रजी शब्द वापरण्यात आले आहेत ज्यांना पर्यायी मराठी शब्द सहज उपलब्ध आहेत. पण सुरुवातीनंतरच्या पानांमध्ये भाषा बरीच सुधारते तेव्हा अशी शंका येते की सुरुवातीच्या पानांमधला लेखक वेगळा तर नाही? तुम्ही मराठी भाषेत साहित्य लिहिताय तर मग शक्य तेवढी शुद्ध मराठी वापरायलाच पाहिजे. जमत नसेल तर सरळ इंग्रजीत लिहा.

पुस्तकाची सगळ्यात मोठी जमेची बाजू म्हणजे ती वाचकाला खिळवून ठेवते. झोप पडत नाही पुढे काय होणार ते जाणून घेतल्याशिवाय. अगदी शेवटपर्यंत रहस्य आणि रोमांच टिकवून ठेवले आहे. प्रत्येक पात्र कथेनुसार उलगडत जाते त्यामुळे कोण काय केव्हा करेल याचा अंदाज लावता येत नाही. शेवट जसा पाहिजे तसा आहे. पुढील काही वर्षांत हे पुस्तक मराठी साहित्यातील मैलाचा दगड ठरले तर आश्चर्य नाही. इतिहास, वर्तमान, रहस्य, रोमांच यांचे योग्य मिश्रण असलेले हे पुस्तक नक्की वाचा.

Good first attempt. Strong Dan Brown overtones. The plot is pretty innovative and convincing. He has weaved in fact and fiction indistinguishably. However by the time we reach the second half, the novel started to stretch out with unnecessary detailing ( as if to cater to a certain page count target). A lot of tidying up of characters was lacking, i.e. lot of characters were introduced with leading innuendos and then they just fizzled out with no bearing on the plot. Being a Nashikkar, I reveled at the intricate details of the city, however similar to Dan Brown novels, if a reader hasn't been to the place in question, all these details get lost as mere delays to get to the point. The end was left to the reader's discretion. It is unfortunate that the author passed away soon after this book was published, depriving us of more of his ideas.

शोध पुस्तकाला आपण ऐतिहासिक थ्रिलर म्हणू शकतो, या पुस्तकात लेखकाने थोडा पुराणांचा पण संदर्भ घेऊन कथेला थोडा मायथॉलॉजीकल चा तडका ही दिलेला आहे. कथानक अगदी वेगवान असून वाचताना बिलकुल कंटाळा येत नाही. शिवाजी महाराजांनी केलेली सुरतेची दुसरी लूट आणि त्यात हरवलेल्या लुटीच्या मोठ्या हिश्याचा चालू असलेला शोध आणि यात गुंतलेले कथेतील पात्र व्यवस्थिशीर जमून आले आहे.

I am glad that this is not another mediocre Dan Brown copy cat novel. It's a well crafted story that explores an interesting aspect of the Maratha history. The story has many twists and turns that keep the reader engaged.

Some factors keep this from being a 5-star rating:
1. This book needed a stronger editing. The author spends too long describing several things which are only tangential. There are also a few too many characters to keep track of.
2. The excessive use of English phrases and Manglish language. Although most of the modern Marathi people don't speak pure Marathi anymore, I still expect cleaner, standard Marathi in a novel, and not a lot of English phrases.

Story is great, it gets 5 stars for it.

But then why did i lower the overall rating? Because of Storytel original audiobook policy. This audiobook scores meager 2. Yes, it has Upendra Limaye reading it. But that's all he's doing, he's just reading it, there's no voice acting. Ketaki Thatte does better job of it than him. Limaye is a very good actor for a certain set of types of characters. But he's never managed to modify his voice for those character and he's miserably failed to do it here. Upendra don'`1t change his pace as per mood of scene, for example he reads the fast paced action or chase scenes with so drab a narration that it feels like he's bored. He doesn't read with proper emotions, even when those emotions are mentioned in script, for example in one scene, the script says that Shaunak says something in excitement, Limaye does read the sentence, 'aani Shaunak uttejit houn mhanala, ..." but does not bring that excitement in his voice when he does read that actual dialogue. And on top of it, he does reading errors, reading Hard disk as hardis, म्हंटल as म्हणलं etc. Upendra Limaye should be banned as audiobook narrator. At least Ketaki Thatte tries to bring a little emotion in her voice, but that's it, it's very little.
Then there is no voice modulation. Neither by the narrators, or by editor. Often narrators can do great voice acting but not voice modulation, that's where editors become important. They can put in software voice modulation, distinguishing voices of every character. Even when narrator can do voice modulation editors should increase the modulation with software.
And that's where comes the director's job. Making of audiobook requires a director, who can tell the artist how to read, where to pause, correct the pace, ensuring the correct emotion, etc and to ensure that editor does proper editing, insert gaps between sections and chapter (these are often missing in this audiobook), correct modulation etc. Basically someone who'll ensure that the audiobook is a good piece of art.
Storytel doesn't do any of these. Storytel need to fix this across their audiobooks. They hire people with great voice, but don't care about voice acting. I don't think they hire directors for these audiobooks, and must be paying their sound editors very basic sum. They need to change this. The artist reads, editor ensures the sequence. That's it. There is not even quality checks. Some of the errors are left unedited/uncut in this and many other Storytel audiobooks. The only reason Storytel has market, is because Audible is not much into the the Indian regional language. I hope someday they will or Storytel will learn the lesson. But I'm afraid, by that time too many of the books would be published without and hence spoil the listening experience.

Getting back to the story, this is a great story. Based on the premise of a fictional history, it builds up an awesome modern treasure hunt adventure. Clearly the writing style is mostly based on Dan Brown, but that's okay. The story is original and well written. The events are well paced and keeps the readers' on their toes. The characters are well defined. We do get invested in them and worry about them. I felt that some of the murders were necessary, but then they were natural from the murderers' behavioural point of view. Some scientific information was wrong, but then we have to suspend our disbelief in all fiction. Lots of writers write that the silencers on a gun makes very small or no noice, which is far from truth. Silencers barely reduce the noice. But if we can accept that to nJoy the story, we can definitely accept the inaccuracies in this story.

All in all, I'd love to read this book again; stressing on read. :D

एकेकाळी मी एका दिवसात पाचशे ते सहाशे पाने वाचण्याचा स्टॅमिना बाळगून होतो. पण तेव्हा मी सडाफटिंग होतो. शालेय आणि महाविद्यालयीन जीवनात उन्हाळ्याच्या सुट्टीत एखादी कादंबरी किंवा ग्रंथ घेऊन एक किंवा दोन दिवसात फडशा पाडत असे. आताही कौटुंबिक जबाबदाऱ्या पार पाडत, नोकरी करत आणि अगदी "सचिन" सिनेमा पाहूनही चार दिवसात जवळपास पाचशे पानांची कादंबरी वाचून काढली. आता थोड्या वेळापूर्वी मुरलीधर खैरनारांची "शोध" वाचून पूर्ण झाली.
शिवाजी महाराजांनी सुरत लुटल्यानंतर त्या लुटीतील एक मोठा हिस्सा मध्येच गहाळ होतो आणि तो खजिना शोधण्यासाठी कोण कोण कार्यरत असतात आणि त्यांना कोणत्या संकटाना सामोरे जावे लागते त्या काल्पनिक घटनांची ऐतिहासिक घटनांशी एवढी सुंदर गुंफण झालीय कि काही क्षण कादंबरी काल्पनिक आहे हा विसर पडतो. अगदी थ्रिल, सस्पेन्स, माफक प्रमाणात सेक्स, रोमान्स इत्यादीच मिश्रण करीत त्यांनी कादंबरी अतिशय सहजतेने गुंफलीय. कादंबरीचा शेवट शिवाजी महाराजांच्या व्यक्तित्वाचा एका पैलूला स्पर्श करून जातो. तो पैलू कादंबरीच्या मध्यावरही एकदा डोकावून जातो. शिवाजी महाराजांची सामाजिक बाजू अप्रत्यक्षपणे मांडून जातो. खजिन्यापेक्षा तेच महत्त्वाचे.
कादंबरी थोडी लांबली आहे. लांबी कमी करून थोडी आटोपशीर बनवता आली असती. असो!

शोध....मुरलीधर खैरनार लिखित उत्कंठावर्धक ऐतिहासिक व आधुनिक काळाची सांगड घालुन मंत्रमुग्ध करणारी कादंबरी.

काही ठिकाणी अनावश्यक पात्रे अन अधिकची माहिती आहे, त्यामुळे मूळ कथानक कधी कधी थोडं खेचल्यासारखं वाटतं. हे वगळलं असतं तर कादंबरी एकदम आटोपशीर व जास्त उत्कंठावर्धक झाली असती. एकदा नजेरेखालून टाकायला काही हरकत नाही.

शोध कथा

शिवाजी महाराजांनी जेव्हा दुसऱ्यांदा सुरत लुटली व ती लूट घेऊन ते स्वराज्याकडे परतत होते, तेव्हा त्यांना मोगल सैन्याशी जोरदार झुंज द्यावी लागली. मोगल सैन्याला मात देण्यासाठी शिवरायांनी योजना अशी आखली कि त्यामुळे मोगल चक्रावून गेले. त्या योजने अंतर्गत त्यांनी मराठी सैन्य ४ वेगवेगळ्या तुकड्यात विभागले, २ तुकड्या खजिना सांभाळण्यासाठी आणि उरलेल्या २ तुकड्या त्याना संरक्षण देण्यासाठी आणि या दोन्ही तुकड्यांचा मार्गही भिन्न-भिन्न होता. पैकी एक तुकडी आनंद मकाजीच्या नेतुत्वाखाली खजिन्यासहित सुखरूपपने राजगडावर पोहचली.

परंतु, गोंदाजी नारोला मोगली सैन्याशी कडवी झुंज द्यावी लागली, त्यांनीही झुंजत-झुंजत ती नाशिकपर्यंत आणली. पण त्यांना यात यश मिळाले नाही व ते मोगलांकडून कैद झाले. पण, गोंदाजीने झुंजिच्या अगोदर खजिना कुठेतरी सुखरूप लपवून ठेवला. मात्र, हा निरोप शिवाजी महाराजांपर्यंत पोहविण्या अगोदर गोंदाजी मोगलांचा कैदी झाला.

यावेळी त्यांच्यासोबत एक इंग्रज अधिकारीही कैद होता, खजिना सुखरूप स्वराज्यात पोहचावा ह्यासाठी गोंदाजिने खजिन्याचा नकाशा या इंग्रज अधिकाऱ्याकडे सोपवला व हा नकाशा महाराजांपर्यंत पोहचवन्याचं वचन घेतलं. पण कैदेतून सुटल्यावर काही कारणामुळे रिचर्ड ला मायदेशी इंग्लंड ला परतावं लागलं व तिथेच त्याचा मृत्यू झाला . गोंदाजीचा निरोप व नकाशा दोन्ही रिचर्ड कडे अडकले परंतु त्याची नोंद रिचर्ड च्या दैनंदिनीत नमूद होती.

३५० वर्षानंतर रिचर्डची वंशज क्लारा ग्रेंजर हिला गोंदाजीचा निरोप सापडला व तीने तो निरोप तिचे भारतीय इतिहासप्रेमी मित्र केतकी व शौनक ह्यांना दाखवण्यासाठी भारतात आणला. यापैकी, केतकी एक खोजणार होती, हे खोजणार गेले ३५० वर्षांपासून खजिन्याचा शोध घेत असतात. तिच्या अठरा पीढ्यांनी सुरत लुटीत हरवलेली महत्वाची वस्तू शोधण्यासाठी आपल जीवन समर्पित केलं होत. या ३५० वर्षांच्या कालखंडात अनेकांनी या खजिन्याची शोधाशोध केली, अगदी खुद्द महाराजांचे पेशवे मोरोपंत त्रिंबक पिंगळे, संभाजी राजेही स्वतः जातीनिशी या खजिन्याचा शोधात अनेक वर्ष घालवली परंतु कोणाच्याच हातात काहीच गवसले नाही.

हा खजिना केतकी-शौनक व आबाजी शोधत असतात आणि त्यांना एक एक धागे मिळत जातात. यात आबाजीला आर्थिक पाठबळ जोरदार असतं. पण तरीही, यात केतकी-शौनकच बाजी मारतात.

Superb thriller. The story happens on a historic background... the great Shivaji Maharaj's time. Maharaj looted the business city of surat twice. The 2nd time, one of the loot carrying troop of Shivaji maharaj gets badly followed and trapped by the mughals. To save the loot, head of the troop hides it somewhere on his route and gets arrested. In further period, all in his troop and he himself dies in jail but somehow manages a message about the hidden loot to reach maharaj. Unfortunately it didn't reach him. Since then every ruler be it mughals, britishers including marathe themselves tried their best to find out this loot but they couldn't. Then the story enters the present time where few people with the help of historians, ancient papers were close to this secret and there starts a deadly race to find the hidden place.

Fast paced story... detailed historical and geographical study of the places done by the author is simply stunning.

I picked this book from a list of "25 best books written in last 25 years" among others. To be frank, all the books I have read from that list were worthy of such high praise but this one has gets highest points from me.

First, the way story is developed. Having its roots in Shivaji Maharaj's time gets any Marathi person hooked instantly but the way story Murlidhar Khairnar unfolds the story with so many details and so much precision, I have never seen it in any other Marathi book ever. Second, even though it is obviously fiction, there is actually so much you learn from this book about the 17th century Maharashtra, about its social, political structure. Third, detailing given in this book. Its so beautiful, its so magical that literally you will start seeing figures dancing on the pages in front of you. Extremely powerful.

Unfortunately, this writer is not with us anymore. But his legacy will stay with us with this wonderful book.

१६७० साली शिवाजी राजांनी सुरतेची लूट करून परतताना त्यातला बराच मोठा खजिना स्वराज्यात परत येऊ शकला नाही.. त्या खजिन्याचा शोध घेणारी थरारक कथा लेखकाने आपल्या भावविश्वातून उभी केली आहे.. कथा रंगवताना शिवकालीन अस्सल नोंदी, दस्तावेज याचा पुरेपूर उपयोग लेखकाने भौगोलिक भान ठेवून केला आहे.. मुंबई, नाशिक आणि सप्तश्रृंग पर्वतरांगेतील ठिकाणे लेखक आपल्या लेखणीने वाचकांसमोर जिवंत करतो.. कथेची उत्कृष्ठ मांडणी, वेगवान कथानक, लेखणीतून जिवंत केलेले प्रसंग, श्वास रोखून धरायला लावणारा suspense, वर्णनातून जिवंत केलेले किल्ले आणि सह्याद्रीच्या डोंगररांगा ही या कादंबरीच्या काही जमेच्या बाजू आहेत.. मानवी व्यक्तिमत्वाचे लोभ, लालसा, शोधक वृत्ती असे बरेच कंगोरे लेखकाने लीलया हाताळले आहेत.. कथेच्या शेवटी शिवाजी राजाच्या आणि त्याच्या शिलेदाराप्रति आपला आदर द्विगुणित झाल्याशिवाय राहत नाही.. इंग्रजी तील dan brown लिखीत अनेक suspense थ्रिलर सारखा थरार मराठी बोलीभाषेतून वाचकांसमोर मांडणे लेखकाला योग्यपणे जमले आहे.

A must read book, the way author has filled the gaps in the timeline is just awesome. One of the best mystery book. Suspense, suspense and only suspense. While reading it, one will get information regarding various things like History, technology, defence etc. further after reading it, reader will understand how loyal and intelligent Mavla’s were to Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Author has done extensive research to write this book and avid readers should not miss this master piece. A must Read....!!!

Brilliant plot. This book revolves around a fictitious story of Shivaji Maharaj and his loot of Surat and part of the loot gone missing during those days.
Shodh means search. Search of the missing loot in current period by referring to the clues. Would love to read more books from the same author.

This book is a gem! Very few authors research so much in depth to understand the culture, geography and emotions of the characters the book possesses. Murlidhar Khairnar has written this masterpiece in such detail that you actually feel to be part of the story.
Sadly we will never get to read the second part of this book as the author died soon after releasing this one.

Very few books in Marathi are based on such story. A must read. Writer has weaved the story and characters in a manner which keeps your enthusiasm up all the while. Learnt more about Nashik and nearby areas, hills and geography.

Superb book. Writer seems to have done lot of research for the content. Connecting the 300 year old historic storyline to current day is smoothly done. Explanation seems to be unnecessary in some pages. But most of it plays important role for the ending.

Its a nice book in first half, but too much detailing and failing plot towards the end makes it loose some stars. Some very unnecessary comments or lines.
However, its a very good attempt specially in Marathi literature. Marathi's our own treasure hunt story.
