The Misplaced Note opens in present day, 1998, and goes back in time to 1939, when Maud is nine years old. Lucy, Maud’s best friend, plots a disobedience and writes a note that details the noncompliance. Maud hides the note and then cannot find it. The note haunts Maud with guilt for many years as a string of regrettable consequences follow.
Mr. Nally, Papa’s dear friend, falls while climbing down a ladder from the hayloft. Ethan, Maud’s older half-brother, returns to the farm to help. Maud’s mother doesn’t want him around because he reminds her of Papa’s first wife, so she finds a job in Pittsburgh at the onset of the Second World War. At the age of fourteen, Maud assumes her mother’s duties and does not leave the farm until she is thirty-two. Are the consequences God’s punishment for Maud? Does she ever realize her dream of having a family of her own?
