Adventure Time’s adorably weird and wonderful post-apocalyptic world has captured the hearts of fans worldwide.
Featuring all the title cards from seasons 3 and 4 of the show, plus early sketches, creator commentary, and exclusive insights into the vast and varied inspirations behind the art, the second volume of Adventure Time: The Original Cartoon Title Cards is an absolute must-have for every fan.
So I’m a huge fan of Adventure Time and was very excited to be able to review this book. I have to admit, before reading this, I never really paid attention to the title cards of each episode while watching the show, but I definitely will now!
It was really interesting to see the work and thought that went into each title card. A lot more effort was required to create them than I expected, and the title cards themselves actually had a lot more meaning than just introducing each episode. Many of them hinted at what happened in each episode, in really subtle ways that you wouldn’t notice until you thought about it a bit more. However, others were intentionally misleading, which I thought was really cool. The creators would have an idea of what they would want you to think was going to happen, while really, something else entirely would occur that you completely didn’t expect. I really liked that and will definitely be studying the title cards a lot more thoroughly when season 7 starts airing, while keeping in mind they’re not always as they seem.
As well as that, the amount of detail in some of these title cards was amazing. There were so many intricate little things that just added to the whole picture to make everything more eye-catching. It was great to see how things changed from the original sketches to the full colour versions that were shown with the episodes. Colour can make so much difference, and I learnt from this book that typography is definitely important as well as the actual images, and can change the way things look overall instantly.
I loved seeing what inspired each title card as well. The creators were inspired from many different sources like Hitchcock movies, or film noir. One of my favourites ones was the title card of season 3, episode 5 (“Too Young”), which was inspired by romance novel covers - it worked so well and gave off the exact intended vibe. I liked seeing which title cards were a bit more difficult to design as well - for example, the creator for the title card of the episode “Still” originally had a bit of trouble coming up with an idea to portray stillness, before eventually settling on Finn and Jake as statutes in the background.
Overall, I found this book a really great look at the behind the scenes aspects of Adventure Time. It was really fun to study the title cards in a bit more depth and learn about how they were created, as well as find out why they were so important in introducing and setting the tone of the episodes. It also enabled me to relive some of my favourite episodes, and I’m really excited for the new season to start now. Highly recommended to Adventure Time fans.
When I was young I remember watching cartoons featuring Bugs and Daffy, Captain Caveman or Godzilla. Many years have passed and today the choice of cartoons is vast – there are channels which need output 24/7 so the battle for airtime is tough.
I have two boys (both under 10) and, like their dad, they enjoy the cartoons too. However, Teen Titans, The Amazing World of Gumball and even Spongebob are nothing like the cartoons we once watched (except perhaps for Chorlton and the Wheelies which was trippy – and not a cartoon).
There is one show that both my kids cannot get enough of and that is Adventure Time. When I received the beautiful Adventure Time Cartoon Title Cards book they pounced on it with absolute glee. This book is a treat for all the fans of the show. The artwork is striking, there are sketches and outlines of images used in the show, the variant title cards are particularly fun to see and it is incredible how subtle changes can alter the whole feel of a picture. The comic book nerd in me was lapping up the unseen artwork.
I enjoyed reading some of the artist’s notes to my younger son (who at 5 is showing way more artistic skill than I will ever achieve). The commentary and discussions nestle amongst the pictures and provide some insights into the considerations that go towards selecting the ‘right’ image to include in the finished cartoon.
Adventure Time: The Original Cartoon Title Cards (Seasons 3 & 4) would be a welcome addition to the bookshelves of any fan of the show. The book looks beautiful with high quality finish and feel to the pages. It also gave my kids the chance to discuss each of the episodes over and over – the phrase ‘Oh look’ met virtually every page turn.
May be a bit biased here, but I absolutely love Adventure Time! Like totally love <3 So to me this book was a complete joy to have in my possession- I thought it was really cool how they did it. They included an introduction highlighting awards they had won and gave an insight to how they came up with sketches and themes of the show.
They also gave us some background information to the artists (both pass and present) who helped to developed this AMAZEBALLS SHOW!
Then came the Title Cards and... wow... just wow! It talked about how they came up with the concepts of each episode, how original sketches were developed to the finished polished versions that we see on tv to some remember-able quotes from the episode. I particularly liked how almost if not all the title card was made up from what inspired each of the artists from historical events to stories, movies comics etc.
So all in all, a big thumbs up to The Original Cartoon Title Cards: Season 3 & 4 of Adventure time! I hope to get vol 1 and any other vols that will be published in the near future!!
For my first review of a giveaway, I would like to think I nailed it :) !!!
I won this book as part of Goodread's First Reads competitions.
I entered this competition hoping to win the book for two of my cousins as they love Adventure Time (okay, okay, I love it too!).
I've yet to open the book as it's a present but it is really well presented and well made with a lovely cover and hard back. Hoping to update my review soon when they've had a look through it :)
Although I haven't watched past Season 1 of Adventure Time, I really enjoyed seeing the different title cards and reading the story and thought behind each one. I'm excited to continue watching the series and seeing these cards on the show itself. It was something different and an easy and relaxing read.
