She came for the fashion show. He came to catch a killer.
The El Paso fashion gala was slated to be the hottest event of the year and a must do if Liz Monahan, the creative brains behind Nina Bruce Designs, was to vault the company to the big time. Circumstances put Liz at the party in one of her own creations, escorted by a young, handsome model hired to show her off to the well-known and well-established. But Liz didn’t count on her date being an undercover Texas Ranger who is investigating a human trafficking ring. She also didn’t count on being kidnapped and trafficked herself.
When Texas Ranger Ben Hunter slips away from Liz Monahan at the gala and begins his investigation, he couldn’t be more surprised to arrive in Juarez, Mexico to find her held captive by infamous human trafficker Carlos Sanchez. In order to save her, Ben must commit murder. Hers.
So for somebody who does not like romance I sure do love this authors work.
A complicated yet logical plot line takes the reader into the heavy and dirty underground world of human smuggling.
It also takes you on a road of acceptance, growth and a willingness to live with a new reality. A passionate reality. A fascinating realty.
All of this is boiling down to one truth. This is a romance book. One with a story to back up the romance but still a romance and it is better written and edited than most. It is a good fast, mostly clean read that is filled with hope and awh moments.
I think this book is a great start to this new series. It is one of the best suspense books I read in a while, my heart was still hammering hours after I finished reading it. The twists thrown in kept me from guessing what happens next and the story doesn't slow at all until the end. The heroine, Liz stumbles in the middle of an investigation that deals with human trafficking and the hero, Ben rescues her a few times. Their journey to HEA is quite a dangerous adventure and shows us that love is ageless. Looking forward to more in the series.
I loved reading this & I can promise I will be reading it again. I'll admit that towards the end I was starting to get a little worried. But I like the fact that I couldn't guess exactly how the book was going to end.
I found this story hard to put down. There was plenty of action, drama, and falling in love despite the danger. Liz got caught up in something she never would have imagined. She was independent, career driven, and smart. During the line of duty, Ben encountered Liz and felt something strong. He was so protective, dedicated, and honest except the undercover lie. I really loved this older woman, younger man story and highly recommend it.
I received a copy through Book Obsessed Chicks, and this is my unsolicited review.
This is the first book in a new romance series called Texas Rangers: Specials Ops. I loved it!
Elizabeth (Liz) Monahan is a likable character. Though, I wanted to either slap her or shake her on occasion. She is the creative director at Nina Bruno Designs, an up and coming fashion house in Texas. When she steps in at the last minute to showcase the house's latest fashion design, she has no idea what hornets nest she will be stepping into.
Ben Hunter is also a likable character. I must admit that I liked him better than Liz - he didn't annoy me in the least! Undercover as Liz's date, Ben is determined to break open the human trafficking ring that has been smuggling women and girls over the border from Mexico. However, he didn't count on his attraction to Liz.
I had previously read a paranormal horror and a science fiction book by this author, so when I heard that this book was available to pre-order, I bought myself a copy.
I love reading romances such as this one; they are fun, quick reads. I started to read this book and didn't put it down until I had finished it. This story took me on an adventure full of danger and romance. There are several twists and turns in the tale that had me sitting on the edge of my seat. The villain, Carlos Sanchez, is a dangerous man, with powerful men in his employ. However, I would have preferred if he was more "hands on", rather than letting his henchmen carry out orders. But, just as in real life, this character hides behind them to avoid capture by the law. Nevertheless, his presence is felt through the story and sent shivers down my spine. He is not a nice man by any means.
Unfortunately, although I love this story, I did find this book a little formulaic, with a similar premise to other books I have read over the years (and I've read hundreds). Granted, it's not easy to come up with fresh material when writing romances - it's all been written before. However, the vivid descriptions used to describe the characters and scenes brought the book to life. The danger felt palpable and real - this got my heart racing. Speaking of pulse pounding, the heat generated by Liz and Ben's attraction scorched the page. I reached the end of the book with sadness, as I wanted to keep reading. However, I am now looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
T.C. Archer has written a wonderful contemporary romance. I love their writing style, which is fast paced and exciting. I also love the way the story flowed. I have added these two authors onto my favourite author's list and will be reading more of their books in the future.
Due to scenes of a sensual nature that are a little on the explicit side (though not as explicit as some books I have read), as well as some bad language, I do not recommend this book to younger readers under 16. However, I highly recommend this book if you love steamy contemporary romances. - Lynn Worton
http://fallenoverbookreviews.blogspot... So I am not too big on romance books but I do find myself on occasion reading them. I liked this story being told and the attraction that Liz and Ben have for each other. Ben is a yummy Texas Ranger that puts the bad guys away his team is considered the best of the best and I have to agree. No I am not saying this because I wanted to grow up and be a Texas Ranger well I guess I am lol. Anyway on to the review of the book, Liz is a designer and when she has to show up in the dress she designed at first she is against it but when she meets Ben who is undercover she really doesn't mind too much. Though when Liz over hears something to do with Ben and the word cop she gets involved way more than she wanted to and now her life and Ben's hangs in the balance with the man involved with human trafficking and getting someone's granddaughter back in one piece. This story does take place within El Paso and Mexico so we see a lot of border talk and it makes you wonder how easy is it to have people trafficked though between the two states. All the while of Ben trying to do his job of putting away the man who is responsible for human trafficking he also trying to keep Liz safe while Liz is fighting her feelings for Ben. There is plenty of action, some steamy scenes, a lot of dodging from the bad guys. This is a good contemporary romance and I want to see what else this author has in store for us readers in book two of the Special Ops series.
“Don’t even think about running, honey. You can’t hide from a Texas Ranger.”
Texas Ranger Ben Hunter aka Adam Billings makes this story. He’s hot, sexy and bent on ending a human trafficking ring in Mexico. It just happens that he has fallen for Liz Monahan, a star fashion designer 11 years his senior who ends up getting tangled up in the sting. It leads to a fast-paced amount of criminal activity from chasing down bad guys to kidnappings to gun battles, fires and car chases. I had a hard time keeping up with it all, including the two FBI agents who only seemed to make things more complicated. Liz didn’t end up being a likable character for me, but I haven’t quite pinned my finger on why that is. She’s a strong character, smart in her own way, sassy and she has a backbone, but dwelling on the age difference with Ben got old (maybe because I’m in her age bracket and wouldn’t flinch at the thought of an 11-year age difference?). There was a lot of action. I sometimes had a hard time keeping people straight (the secondary-type characters). But the thing that really probably bothered me more than anything was the large amount of proofreading-type errors (i.e. ex-ray versus x-ray is one example, and then on one page it had an 80-inch TV at the Senator’s house and on the next page all of a sudden it’s a 70-inch TV) and general typographical/editing errors. It didn’t change the story in any way, really, but it was quite distracting.
Due to a last minute cancellation by the top model they hired, Nina Bruno designs latest creation is modelled by Elizabeth Monahan, owner of the company, at the G International Gala. Her date, male model Adam Billings is young, good looking and charming and, unbeknown to Liz, is a Texas Ranger working undercover, whose real name is Ben Hunter.
There are kidnappings, car chases, crooked DA s, bought cops, raids on houses as well as the growing sexual tension between Liz and Ben. It's a proper cop story and would make a good film.
Switching points of view and being told what Liz and Ben are thinking made it a bit repetitive in places but at the crucial points in the plot, the writing was pacey and high action. This story is well written but just too much 'tell' for me.
If you like law enforcement stories, you'll love this!
I wasn't quite sure what I was going to think of the story when I first started it. I find most Law enforcement stories to be too over the top too dramatized and too fake for me, since I know the truth. however this story about Ben being under cover and him quickly falling in love with Liz was a welcome storyline. I think the author did a great job researching law enforcement as well as understanding how things work behind the scenes and also did a great job entertaining us with a realistic story of the Mexican Mafia type. the story is filled with action, romance, adventure and a whole lot of entertainment. if you're looking for a unique and realistic story this is going to be for you. I can't wait to read book two and find out where the author takes us next since we're left wondering.
Ok so I love romance, it is what makes my heart goes all a flutter. But then I read so many that most times they start to sound like cookie cutter books. This one is like that and nothing like that, It has romance galore. Ben and Liz literally sizzle on the page but it has a real story.
Although I am not convinced that the Rangers have a special ops unit. Who cares. Ben rocks, he rocks my world. I will take him if he grows tired of Liz.
What can I say. Who does not love a good love story. I know I sure do and this one is better than most.
This man is HOT. And I mean it. Usually I do not get this book boyfriend stories but with this book I almost got it. In real life I would have considered this guy as a prospect.
The story is a good one. I liked it. Romance with no age restriction. What more do you want?
This is a nice action and romance thriller with good pace and excellent chemistry. The story pulls you right in with its accessible narrative and energetic writing style. The world of fashion models meets human trafficking. This is very enjoyable and entertaining, not without its serious moments and well placed suspense. For fans of the genre this is definitely recommended.
