As her doctor, Avery brings her back to health and in time grows to form an attachment for her . . . an attachment threatened when the spy who killed his friend is ordered to assassinate Layanna, too. Avery must save her and help her accomplish her mission or the whole world will fall under Octung's shadow -- and that of its enigmatic rulers.

The ideal and story is quite interesting and makes you think my issue was how audle one started by just throwing into the story with no background information about the story or the characters. I will say it keep you interested but sometimes you are not given information to understand the plot or storyline slowly you do finger out the plot and storyline see so many you get lost from one to another and you are left having to backtrack and read or listen again to try to figure what is happening.
The author did a great job in writing the story but a bit more information in some areas would have been good. The narrator also did an awesome job bringing the story and characters alive.
So my recommendation is try it out I did like and will finish the rest of the series

July 24, 2026I started listening to it after I had started reading The Darkness That Comes Before, and it took me some time to calibrate my expectation that this is more of a vibes story - cool looking monsters and scenes and all that. No slow intrigues in sight. Hero saves the day, and the next day, and the next... Felt like an older story to me, like 20 years before it is actually published. Might have been really cool back then.

A very good start to what looks like an epic story that’s part fantasy, part sci-fi and with steampunk elements. The world building here is excellent and allows the reader to easily picture the scenes and feel a part of the action. I did feel that the first part of volume 2 lost a bit of momentum but, by the end the plot picks up and managed to leave me looking forward to reading the next instalment.

Harrowing adventure through a complex universe
I very much enjoyed volumes one and two. The characters are fascinating and the backdrops are very vivid and take a while to navigate. There are so many tangles I wouldn't try to unravel them for you. Reading is the key and I suggest you give it a go. Now I'm moving on to volumes 3,4 and beyond!

Lots of interesting ideas with a Steampunk and post-apocalyptic scenario. Well written, forgivable typos and editing errors.
