More often than not, people think of astrology as a tool for divination or the exploration of one’s personality. Astrology is considerably more than that. It is a sacred science, a highly descriptive symbolic language, and it is also a technology that can be applied to ritual, herbalism, the use of crystals, and much more.
This is a practical handbook for any practitioner of magic to use in building individual rituals and creating the most effective magic. Concise, focused, and expertly presented, this book teaches the core concepts of astrology so that wiccans and pagans can truly apply it to their practices.
Pros: practical, clear, user-friendly, well-constructed. Cons: no index (pity, given that this is a book to refer to as much as read straight through). And, worse (docked a star) no references or bibliography. The information *is* credible but a little acknowledgement of a few "Giants' shoulders" - Ficino, for example! - would have been nice...
If you've wondered how to apply astrology to magic or how astrology even applies to Paganism, this book is a must read. What I like about it is that Ivo does an excellent job of explaining astrology and showing how you can apply it to your magical work without a lot of esoteric jargon or technical terms. When he has to use such terms, he does, but he also explains them. Ivo also provides some exercises that can help you apply the information in the book to your magical practice. This is a certainly a book for someone who has astrology background or magical background and wants to apply astrology to magic, but if you, like me, don't know much about astrology, you'll still get a lot from the book. I do recommend reading the book once and taking notes and then going back through and trying the exercises. This is a much needed resource and I highly recommend it to anyone. One down side to this book is no bibliography or suggested reading list.
So well written. Dominguez gives a ton of examples, metaphors, similes, and descriptive analogies to illustrate in different ways so people understand such a complex topic. Very easy to read, incredibly practical to apply. There are a lot of different techniques described on how to incorporate astrology into your magickal workings, and he gives you enough information to get you started and to begin more in depth study.
Cons, but not enough to lower the rating: there is very little explanation of the houses, what they mean, how to use them, and how they interact with the other things in a chart. This may be a space constraint, though it is a very small book.
The editing is awful. “Whereas” is written as “Where is,” “We’ll” is written as “Will,” and so on. Sometimes it’s so bad it’s hard to understand exactly what the author is trying to say. It’s as if the book was written by dictation and a human person did not read the manuscript before publishing.
Besides those issues, this is a great primer on astrology for magickal use, and ties in lots of other concepts, like Kabbalah and the elements. There are throwaway comments within the pages that could become entire chapters on their own. Worth a re-read. Absolutely pick this up.
I have always wanted to know more about astrology and this was just perfect. I want to incorporate more into my druid practices with the planets and such, and this was just a perfect intro to astrology.
This is a 4 1/2 star book. It is a great beginning place if you want to utilise astrology in your magical practice. However, this book needs both an index and a further reading list.
Ivo Dominguez Jr.'s "Practical Astrology for Witches and Pagans" is a great read and useful reference for those interested in learning more about astrology. It can be a tad bit tedious at times, but is still interesting and easy to read. Overall, I would rate this book 4.4
My copy of this book was won from the Goodreads.com website and I appreciate the opportunity to read and review this work. I look forward to more books from Ivo Dominguez Jr. in the future.
